SUMMARY:Exhibition:Circulating the Avant-Garde: Aesthetic Counter-Publics in the Little Magazines\, 1890-1920
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to advances in color lithography and photo-engraving as well as resurgent interest in small-press publishing\, richly illustrated and typeset “little magazines” flourished between 1890 and 1920. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Although the little magazines’ resistance to mainstream journalism shortened their lifespan and restricted their circulation\, their experimental approach has had a lasting impact on our sense of magazines as flexible aesthetic and social media.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Civitates Orbis Terrarum: Braun & Hogenberg’s Evolving World
DESCRIPTION:Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cities of the World)\, the first standardized city atlas\, contains over 540 maps and views between its six volumes. First published in 1572 by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590)\, Civitates was first intended as a companion to Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. New editions of the city atlas continued to be printed through 1617. Hogenberg\, one of the most prolific engravers of the time\, was joined by many other engravers in creating the Civitates. Braun edited the work and provided the descriptions of the cities on the verso of each plate. This exhibit contains 18 works from the Civitates\, including many from the Clark Library’s holdings. Also included are reproductions of large panoramas Amsterdam\, London\, and St. Petersburg that reflect the evolution of city mapping through the 17th and 18th centuries.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Football & Pets: Paper Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit of Steve Wirtz’ sculptures features a selection of his Dynamic Football series and animal works. The Dynamic Football laminated paper works explore compositions of action\, allowing the artist to exploit the properties of the medium. The pieces are constructed by gluing many layers of paper over wire armatures. When dry\, the sculptures are painted in an often splashy\, sketchy style. Wirtz’ silly animal works are what the artist is best known for\, and they take shape in his Goetzville\, Michigan studio.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Oil on Water: Painting on Linen
DESCRIPTION:Danielle Eubank is an award-winning artist who has been on four international sailing expeditions and painted every ocean on the planet to raise awareness about the oceans and climate change. Her large paintings are emotive abstract portraits of specific bodies of water. The Oil on Water exhibition features Eubank’s oil on linen paintings of the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. She creates patterns within patterns\, representing vertical stacks of rhythms. The undulating forms\, such as water ripples\, oil slicks\, and refuse\, combined with the memories that water evokes\, makes her work eye-opening\, yet soothing and sensual. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Lobby\, Floor 1 \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ваза: Copper & Brass Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Victoria (Vika) Bulgakova grew up in Ukraine\, a part of the former Soviet Union. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1994\, and for the next 22 years\, New York became her home. In 2016\, she moved to Michigan to pursue an MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She found the raw beauty of Detroit inspiring and kept her metalsmithing studio practice in the city. The copper and brass vessels in her Ваза series and other included works are a meditation on fluidity of memories: their ability to shift from reflection to re-invention over time. Each vessel potentially holds something within its boundaries\, whether tangible or not. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Design-Based Analysis of Survey Data
DESCRIPTION:Please join instructor Brady T. West of the University Of Michigan's Program in Survey Methodology\, as he conducts a half-day workshop titled \"Design-Based Analysis of Survey Data\". This workshop is designed for survey data analysts of all skill levels\, and will present theoretically appropriate methods of analyzing survey data collected from complex sample designs. Dr. West will also present the implications of incorrect analyses based on his research findings from a meta-analysis of analytic error\, while also providing examples of proper design-based data analysis techniques using SAS and Stata. As always\, this workshop is free and open to the public.\n\nTopics include:\n\n• Overview of theoretically appropriate design-based analysis of survey data collected from complex samples\n\n• Case studies in analytic error (including findings from a meta-analysis of recent scientific publications)\, and the implications of using incorrect analysis methods\n\n• Appropriate use of survey weights and design-based methods of variance estimation for population inference related to descriptive parameters and regression models\n\n• Examples of proper design-based data analysis techniques using SAS and Stata (attendees are also welcome to ask about similar methods in other software packages)\n\nBIO:\n\nDr. West's current research interests include the implications of measurement error in auxiliary variables and survey paradata for survey estimation\, survey nonresponse\, interviewer variance\, and multilevel regression models for clustered and longitudinal data. He is the lead author of the book Linear Mixed Models: A Practical Guide Using Statistical Software and co-author of the book Applied Survey Data Analysis.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Graffiti as Devotion along the Nile: El-Kurru\, Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Ancient graffiti provide a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals in antiquity. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered in a rock-cut temple by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.\n\nCurators: Geoff Emberling and Suzanne Davis\n\nView the online exhibition:\nhttp://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/graffiti-el-kurru/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Other Crusoes\, Other Islands: Mapping a Complex Legacy
DESCRIPTION:On the 300th anniversary of the publication of The Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe\, of York\, Mariner\, this exhibit interrogates the troubled legacy of Daniel Defoe’s seminal English novel. It also explores how creators have pushed back against the colonialist\, hyper-masculine\, and racist ethos of the text by using the castaway narrative to explore self-sufficiency\, otherness\, and the role of gendered and racialized ideas in constructing the self.\n\nThis novel of shipwreck\, survival\, and rescue has become a cultural touchstone. Today\, many people who haven’t read the novel still feel familiar with key plot elements\, Robinson Crusoe\, and Friday. Yet\, there is less familiarity with how both the original text and many of the adaptations of Robinson Crusoe have fed into and reinforced narratives of imperialism and racism. Drawing on the Hubbard Collection of Imaginary Voyages - one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of editions\, translations\, adaptations\, and spin-offs of Robinson Crusoe - Other Crusoes\, Other Islands seeks to understand how readers and writers have engaged with the story since its initial publication in 1719.\n\nContent Advisory: Please be aware that some items in this exhibit feature racist imagery and potentially painful content. Although Robinson Crusoe is often treated as children’s literature and this exhibit includes children’s books and board games\, it is not an exhibit geared towards children and reflects the significant shifts over time in ideas about what is appropriate for children.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Yo Tengo Nombre
DESCRIPTION:This series of paintings was inspired by the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and the images of migrant families being separated and detained at the US-Mexico border that dominated media outlets across the nation since the summer of 2017. The exhibition also includes nearly 100 I.D. photos of migrant children from a Texas holding center. Buentello took the photos in 2014 while working for an intake agency.\n\n\"Focusing on images from the US media sources that exposed the violence of migrants’ dehumanization\, vulnerability\, fear\, loss\, and criminalization\, the paintings document the embodiment of state-authorized brutality and erasures of personhood.\" -Ruth Leonela Buentello\n\nThis project is funded by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses
DESCRIPTION:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses is an interdisciplinary show of works by Cindy Sowers exploring the elusive sources for the ancient figures of the Muses\, as well as the appropriation of these figures by different artists through the ages.\n\nReception for the Artist: September 6\, approximately 4:30pm. Refreshments will be served. \n\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University\, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature\, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973\, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation\, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer’s Narrative Art\, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism\, postmodernism\, Shakespeare and Rome\, the heritage of Greece\, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts\, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts\, visual arts\, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency\, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium\, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature\, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship\, the Rackham Prize twice\, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award\, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award\, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. Cindy retires from her position as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer IV\, having served in the Residential College for 46 years. She has an active art practice\, and her work will be displayed in the RC Art Gallery in a fall 2019 exhibition. She also maintains a personal website\, cynthiasowers.rc.lsa.umich.edu\, where she publishes essays\, poetry\, and visual artwork.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nature a Moment: Visions of the World from Three Korean-American Artists
DESCRIPTION:Three Chicago-area Korean-American artists render deeply personal interpretations of the natural world in the exhibit “Nature a Moment” at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Using woodcut\, painting on canvas\, and mixed media\, Linda Hyong\, Sung Eun Hong\, and Seong Ok Lee explore the world of flowers\, gardens\, and nature in vivid works that slow time to a fleeting present moment.\n\nLinda Hyong is a University of Michigan alumna and former teaching assistant in the U-M Stamps School of Art & Design. She draws her inspiration from Claude Monet’s water lily garden in France to create her own modern interpretation of impressionism. Seong Ok Lee is inspired by flowers\, which she believes are the most beautiful forms in nature. In her dream-like\, nearly abstract paintings\, Sung Eun Hong communicates her vision of what she calls “pure dreams and fantasy.”\n\nExhibit runs September 14 through November 15\, 2019 at the\n\nUniversity of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, 1800 N. Dixboro Rd.\, Ann Arbor. Free.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Strengths of Refugees and Their Community
DESCRIPTION:Refugees have been at the forefront of political discussion in the United States as the Syrian crisis escalates and xenophobia heightens. Much has been said regarding these refugees\, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.\n\nThis exhibit uses the data collected from a Photovoice project\, combining photography and transcriptions from groups discussions with adolescent refugees to better understand the lived experiences of adolescent refugees. The gallery highlights five main themes that were discussed: Stability and Security\, Interpersonal Difficulties\, Rooting Factors\, Personal Growth\, and Contribution.\n\n“I wish I could help out people… Imma give them everything. Because they are my people\, I have to save my people.” -Alex

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics:
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 60s and 70s\, artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. During these decades\, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. Their new formal and intellectual strategies—seen here across large-scale and miniature work—dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s in a politically shifting American landscape.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice
DESCRIPTION:In September 2019\, the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design will host the New Media Caucus 2019 Symposium and Exhibition\, Border Control.  Symposium and exhibition events will take place in Ann Arbor at the Stamps School of Art and Design (2000 Bonisteel Blvd.) and Stamps Gallery (201 S. Division St.).\n\nExhibition Dates: September 20 - November 10\, 2019\nSymposium Dates: September 19 - 22\, 2019\nGuest Curator: Allison Collins\, Media Arts Curator\, Western Front\n\nCurated by Allison Collins in collaboration with Carrie Edinger and Srimoyee Mitra.\nIn partnership with the New Media Caucus \n\nHuman migration is a defining issue of the 21st century\, often calling into question the relevance\, role\, and responsibilities of national borders across the globe. As individuals seek refuge from geopolitical and environmental forces\, we become an increasingly globalized community. Demarcations of all types are simultaneously porous and closed\, defensive and receptive\, and seen in almost every facet of our existence. Border Control responds to these conditions with an open-ended question\, asking: “How has humanity made sense of the world in relation to borders and boundaries\, both physically and psychologically?” While positioned within (or outside of) defined spaces and identities\, human refusal of such literal definitions is paramount. Even while lines drawn have important consequences for lived reality\, the winds\, currents\, and natural energies of the Earth deny enclosures and definitions that politics and maps might suggest.\n\nDrawn from practices that are touched or driven by new media\, Border Control assembles works by artists who consider geographical contexts\, patterns of migration\, displacement\, and statelessness. Collectively\, they offer projects with subterfuge\, refusal\, and reconsideration of imposed state-sanctioned boundaries.\n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Copies and Invention in East Asia
DESCRIPTION:Far from being frowned upon as uncreative\, in China\, Korea\, and Japan\, copying has long been considered a valuable practice. Through works of art spanning ancient to contemporary times\, Copies and Invention in East Asia challenges our understanding of originality\, and presents copying as an act of imaginative interpretation. The exhibition includes burial goods that conjure a world for the deceased\; Buddhist sculptures produced in multiples to amplify religious experience and meaning\; paintings in which a master’s brushstrokes are faithfully duplicated as a way of shaping the self\; and contemporary works that address multiplicity and duplication in the modern world.\n\nLead support is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, Center for Japanese Studies\, Nam Center for Korean Studies\, School of Information\, and College of Engineering. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Fabrication Studio at the Duderstadt Center\, the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures\, and SeeMeCNC 3D Printers.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Walter Oltmann
DESCRIPTION:Infant Skull II\, a woven “tapestry” made out of very fine aluminum wire\, only reveals its shape when seen from afar. Drawing inspiration from his country’s basketry traditions\, the South African artist Walter Oltmann (b. 1960) alternates densely layered sections with open spaces\, allowing the underlying surface of the work to show through. The skull that emerges is\, in a South African context\, evocative of the Cradle of Humankind—a series of caves outside Johannesburg\, where some of the oldest hominin fossils in the world have been found.\n \nThe work complements UMMA’s renowned and growing collection of historical and contemporary African art and reminds us of the central role of Africa in the history of humankind. The purchase was made possible thanks to the generosity of UMMA Director's Acquisition Committee.\n\nThis acquisition was made possible by the generosity of the UMMA Director's Acquisition Committee\, 2016.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complex Systems Seminar | Statistical Mechanics of Microbiomes
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Next-generation sequencing\, high-throughput metabolomics and other measurement technologies have opened vast new horizons for collecting data on the structure and function of microbial communities. But it remains unclear how to leverage this data for effective intervention in medical and agricultural applications. We do not know which quantities can be reliably predicted\, which are hopelessly contingent\, and what the predictors are for the former. In this talk\, I will draw on conceptual tools from Statistical Physics\, which were designed to answer precisely these sorts of questions. In particular\, I will argue that the key features of community structure are encoded in a susceptibility matrix\, which contain the response of species population sizes to small changes in growth rates. I will show how to estimate this matrix in different scenarios from existing data sets\, and then explain how it can be used to cluster species into functionally redundant groups for enhanced predictability of community composition.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: Social Cognition in Chimpanzees' Cooperative Decision-making
DESCRIPTION:Humans are a highly cooperative species. Over the last decades\, research has heavily focused on the psychological underpinnings of human cooperation as well as their phylogenetic origins. One central approach in this regard has been to study chimpanzees\, one of our two closest evolutionary relatives. Numerous findings have led to the view that\, compared to humans\, chimpanzees are substantially less willing to provide material benefits to conspecifics (especially when this comes at a personal cost) and largely do not take others’ mental states into account for cooperative purposes. In my talk\, I will present a series of experimental studies that offer two amendments to this view. Unlike previously assumed\, chimpanzees do seem motivated to benefit others materially but only after receiving their assistance. Moreover\, chimpanzees do show the ability to adjust their actions in response to others’ mental states in the context of mutualistic cooperation. Together\, these findings provide a better understanding of the similarities and differences between the psychological mechanisms underlying chimpanzee and human cooperation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Lunch Seminar: Fantastic fishes and where to find them - using historical natural history data and robots to explore deep sea fish biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:The deep ocean is frequently assumed to be a homogeneous system lacking the same diverse natural history found in shallower waters. However\, as our methods for exploring the deep ocean improve\, common assumptions about dispersal\, reproduction and behavior are constantly being challenged. With the immense amount of data collected and stored in natural history collections to highlight historical distributions of fishes we can now use these data in concert with modern sampling methods like remote operated vehicles (ROVs) and precision netting to learn more about one of the planets most extreme systems. Join Randy as he takes you on a journey from the highest shelves of museum collections to the extreme depths of the ocean in a quest to learn more about fishes\, and where to find them.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ChE Seminar Series: Brian Aguado
DESCRIPTION:>This Seminar will be held in the North Campus Research Complex\, Building 32\, Auditorium\n\n\"Precision biomaterial platforms to probe valvular fibroblast activation\"\n\nABSTRACT\n\nAortic valve stenosis (AVS) is a progressive disease characterized by aberrant stiffening of the aortic valve\, leading to inadequate blood flow from the left ventricle and eventual heart failure. AVS is currently treated exclusively with valve replacement surgeries\, which may be avoided if effective small molecule therapeutics could be identified to slow or reverse AVS progression. During AVS progression\, a large fraction of valvular interstitial cells (VICs) differentiate into pathogenically activated myofibroblasts\, which contribute to excessive matrix deposition and eventual valve leaflet stiffening. Effective small molecule therapeutics intended to reverse myofibroblast activation remain elusive\, owing to the inherent heterogeneity of the cellular microenvironment from patient to patient. For example\, male patients show increased calcification and female patients show increased tissue fibrosis in the aortic valve microenvironment\, leading to differential drug responses. Considering these clinical observations\, we seek to engineer precision biomaterial microenvironments to recapitulate sex- and patient-specific AVS progression in vitro and identify molecular mechanisms that mediate reversal of myofibroblast activation. Precision biomaterials are defined here as engineered environments that enable the evaluation of how sex- and/or patient-specific variables may influence disease progression. As a strategy to evaluate molecular mechanisms guiding AVS progression\, we utilize poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogels as precision in vitro platforms to probe various biochemical and mechanical cues that activate male and female VICs to a myofibroblast state\, as well as cues that reverse activation (Fig. 1A). My talk will focus on two vignettes where PEG hydrogels were used to evaluate how male and female VICs activate to and reverse from a myofibroblast state in response to different cues\, including (1) serum factors from AVS patients before and after a valve replacement procedure and (2) small molecule inhibitors of myofibroblast activation. Collectively\, our work demonstrates how engineered hydrogel matrices enable an increased understanding of the molecular mechanisms guiding myofibroblast activation and reversal\, which may provide a critical bridge toward sex- and patient-specific small molecule AVS therapies. \n\nSHORT BIO\n\nDr. Brian Aguado is currently an NIH K99 and Burroughs Wellcome Fund postdoctoral fellow at the University of Colorado. His current research is focused on developing precision biomaterials for applications in personalized medicine. Dr. Aguado completed his MS and PhD in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University and his BS degree in biomechanical engineering from Stanford University. He also obtained his certificate in Management for Scientists and Engineers from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern. Dr. Aguado is also a dedicated science communicator outside of the lab and seeks to engage underrepresented populations in the sciences. He is the former president of the Postdoctoral Association of Colorado\, organized seminars featuring underrepresented thought leaders in STEM for CU Café\, and served on the executive board for Project Bridge Colorado. Most recently\, he co-founded LatinXinBME\, a new social media initiative dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive community of Latinx biomedical engineers and scientists to support each other personally and professionally through their careers.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:What Makes Some Music “Great”?
DESCRIPTION:Ultimately a question Louis cannot answer\, he will try to illuminate the greatness about selected/popular concert pieces. Why do we love the Beethoven Fifth Symphony? What was some other music contemporary with this masterpiece and what makes it a masterpiece? The instructor will rely on recordings as well as his own playing in these sessions. \nDr. Louis Nagel\, instructor\, is Professor Emeritus of piano and piano literature after serving for forty-seven years on the faculty of the UM School of Music Theatre and Dance. He has concertized and lectured throughout the United States and internationally and worked collaboratively with his wife\, the psychologist and musician Dr. Julie Jaffee Nagel. In “retirement” he continues to be active as a performer\, lecturer\, and teacher. This Study Group is for those 50 and over and meets Tuesdays\, 1:30–3:00 pm on September 24 – October 29.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | From Floquet Real to Imaginary Time Crystal
DESCRIPTION:Quantum time crystal has been an intriguing many-body “time” state that has received much attention and debate since its early prediction. In this talk\, first\, I will construct a class of concrete “clean” Floquet models to answer the open question on the role of disorder and many-body localization. Second\, by observing the equivalent role of the space and imaginary time in the path integral formalism\, I will present the finding that hard-core bosons coupled to a thermal bath may exhibit the order of “imaginary spacetime crystal”. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Mechanical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Amy Marconnet - Associate Professor at Purdue University\n\nAbstract\nNanostructuring material s allows independent control of multiple material s properties. High conductivity material s such as carbon nanotube forests are useful as thermal interface materials (TIMs) for dissipating power in electronic devices\, while low conductivity material s like nanoporous silicon for thermal barrier coatings and enhanced thermoelectric performance. Beyond thermal transport\, storage of thermal energy is critical for effective heat removal for applications involving\nhighly-transient heat fluxes\, and during material processing. Often to achieve the desired functionality\, multiples material s are combined together to form heterogeneous composites. For example\, in lithium-ion batteries\, the particulate active material s (with micro- and nano-scale features) are sandwiched between metal electrodes and polymer-based separators with microscale thicknesses to form macroscale battery cells. This seminar will discuss methods to understand and\ncontrol thermal transport and development of accurate and reliable experimental and analytical techniques for thermal characterization across multiple length scales. Further\, I will highlight the integration of material synthesis with thermal property measurements and physics-based analysis to provide new avenues for improved material s and device performance.\n\nBio\nAmy Marconnet i s an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. She received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wi Wisconsin – Madison in 2007\, and an M.S. and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University in 2009 and 2012\, respectively. She then worked briefly as a postdoctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining the faculty at Purdue University in 2013. Research in the Marconnet Thermal and\nEnergy Conversion (MTEC) Lab integrates metrology and analysis of underlying transport mechanisms with design and development of nanostructured material s for heat transfer and energy conversion applications.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nam Center Colloquium Series | Re-centering Female Narratives through Murmurs and Song
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored by the Department of Ethnomusicology.\n\nIn the fields of ethnomusicology and folklore\, it has become a well-known ‘given’ that the act of singing has the power to re-position marginal voices to the center of community dialogues. When people gather to share their voices\, they both claim a public role and re-center narratives to include their experiences and their perspectives. Understood in this way\, such expressivities are key to building and nurturing fluid social relationships. This presentation focuses on the role of heungeulsori (murmuring sound)\, an individualistic and improvisatory expression of female desire and angst\, in both private and public realms. In Korea\, heungeulsori historically has served as an emotional outlet for women\, and these murmurs were often an indirect communication\, uttered on the periphery in either hopes the message could be received or\, at least\, released onto the air. Here\, I examine diverse contexts for the performance of heungeulsori and consider the ways by which performers evoke individual\, community and regional identities through pointed use of melodic and narrative tropes. By examining public presentations of a once-private form of female articulation\, the presentation touches on the ways by which concepts of genre and related expressivities transform in accordance with societal transformations and the human relationships therein. The solo voice does not act as an anomaly\, despite its power in redirecting narrative. Rather\, it engages with pre-existing social structures\, reinforcing values of social place and function alongside those of aesthetic expressions tied to women’s roles in Korean society.\n\nHilary Vanessa Finchum-Sung (Ph.D. Indiana University) is currently the Executive Director of the Association for Asian Studies. She formally served as Dean of Student Affairs at Seoul National University's College of Music and Associate Professor of Theory and Ethnomusicology in the Department of Korean Music at Seoul National University (2009-2019). In addition\, Finchum formerly taught in the MA in Asia Pacific Studies Program at University of San Francisco and served as an administrator and researcher at UC Berkeley's Institute of East Asian Studies. She is a Korean music specialist with research interests in sustainable practice in traditional Korean music performance\, musical genealogies\, gender roles and performance\, and emotion embodied through sound. Finchum has published in academic journals such as Ethnomusicology\, the world of music (new series)\, Acta Koreana and Seoul Journal of Korean Studies\, as well as contributed entries to publications such as The SAGE International Encyclopedia of Music and Culture (2019) and numerous edited volumes. She has presented papers at international conferences in the US\, Canada\, China\, Japan\, Egypt\, England and Korea as well as lectures and workshops on Korean music for organizations such as the National Gugak Center\, The National Theatre of Korea\, Korea Foundation\, UNESCO and the Asia Society of New York. In avid pursuit of musicianship\, she regularly practices and performs on the two-string spike fiddle\, haegeum.\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:High Stakes Culture: The Power of the Pronoun
DESCRIPTION:Over the past few years\, “culture wars” have been ignited across the country. Activists from all points of the political spectrum\, even the President of the United States himself\, are turning to beloved cultural objects to stake a claim for their differing beliefs in a politically fraught moment. \n\nWhat is at stake in the ways we understand culture and cultural conflict? High Stakes Culture\, a series presented by the Institute for the Humanities and the Humanities Collaboratory\, brings humanities perspectives to bear on current debates. \n\nThe Power of the Pronoun: \nThe current debate over gender-neutral pronouns plays out on college campuses\, on social media\, and in offices across the country. Why are we thinking about pronouns in new ways? What are the politics and the history of the pronoun? And what do the conversations we are having about them reveal about American culture in this moment? \n\nCome talk to humanities scholars who work on questions like these and others you might have about the power of the pronoun.

SUMMARY:Performance:Yandong Grand Singers
DESCRIPTION:Center for World Performance Studies and Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies present the Yandong Grand Singers at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre on September 24\, 2019 at 7:30pm. In bright voices and natural harmonies shaped by the unique environment of the area\, the Dong people of Guizhou\, China sing about nature\, romantic love\, history and moral values. For the Dong people\, Grand Song is an indispensable part of life\, just as their saying goes\, “rice feeds the body–but songs feed the soul”. The Dong people transmit much of their history\, culture and knowledge through songs that accompany them throughout their lives. Choirs of children\, young and senior people are formed in every village\, representing a crucial symbol of Dong ethnic identity and cultural heritage.\n\nThe Yandong Grand Singers is a choir formed by farmers from Yandong Village\, specializing in the “Grand Song” of the Dong people - polyphonic music known to the world only in recent decades. The repertoire includes a range of genres such as ballads\, children’s songs\, songs of greeting and imitative songs that test performers’ virtuosity at mimicking the sounds of animals. Taught by masters to choirs of disciples\, Grand Songs are performed formally in the drum-tower\, the landmark venue for rituals\, entertainment and meetings in a Dong village\, or more spontaneously in homes or public places. In 2009\, the Dong musical tradition was listed by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage in China. This will mark the group’s first full US tour\, having previously appeared at Carnegie Hall China Festival and the International International Festival for Vocal Music in Leipzig\, Germany.\n\nCWPS events are free and open to the public. Visit www.lsa.umich.edu/world-performance for more info. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event\, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies\, at 734-936-2777\, at least one week in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.\n\nThis event is supported by the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Engagement and Interdisciplinary Academic Affairs.
