The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. First published in 1572 by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590)\, Civitates was first intended as a companion to Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. New editions of the city atlas continued to be printed through 1617. Hogenberg\, one of the most prolific engravers of the time\, was joined by many other engravers in creating the Civitates. Braun edited the work and provided the descriptions of the cities on the verso of each plate. This exhibit contains 18 works from the Civitates\, including many from the Clark Library’s holdings. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. It also explores how creators have pushed back against the colonialist\, hyper-masculine\, and racist ethos of the text by using the castaway narrative to explore self-sufficiency\, otherness\, and the role of gendered and racialized ideas in constructing the self.\n\nThis novel of shipwreck\, survival\, and rescue has become a cultural touchstone. Today\, many people who haven’t read the novel still feel familiar with key plot elements\, Robinson Crusoe\, and Friday. Yet\, there is less familiarity with how both the original text and many of the adaptations of Robinson Crusoe have fed into and reinforced narratives of imperialism and racism. Refreshments will be served. \n\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University\, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature\, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973\, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation\, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer’s Narrative Art\, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism\, postmodernism\, Shakespeare and Rome\, the heritage of Greece\, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts\, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts\, visual arts\, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency\, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium\, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature\, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship\, the Rackham Prize twice\, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award\, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award\, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. Cindy retires from her position as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer IV\, having served in the Residential College for 46 years. She has an active art practice\, and her work will be displayed in the RC Art Gallery in a fall 2019 exhibition. Drawing inspiration from his country’s basketry traditions\, the South African artist Walter Oltmann (b. 1960) alternates densely layered sections with open spaces\, allowing the underlying surface of the work to show through. The skull that emerges is\, in a South African context\, evocative of the Cradle of Humankind—a series of caves outside Johannesburg\, where some of the oldest hominin fossils in the world have been found.\n \nThe work complements UMMA’s renowned and growing collection of historical and contemporary African art and reminds us of the central role of Africa in the history of humankind. However\, paradata are often underutilized. This study suggests a novel approach to use paradata to alter the survey itself in real time in order to improve data quality.\n\nThrough a predictive model\, paradata about the responses will be utilized to alter the presentation of the survey questions themselves. First\, if respondents straight-line through a grid section of the survey\, following grids could be changed to single item questions in order to discourage straight-lining. Second\, if respondents display multiple indicators of poor data quality\, key questions could be moved forward in the survey to present earlier. This second option reduces survey length\, lowers cognitive burden for respondents that are taking short cuts\, and prevents drop-offs. Both of these techniques could help to improve data quality.\n\nThough programming a survey to adapt in real time may involve a large effort in the beginning\, once employed it could be used across projects for little additional cost. Improving data quality should be a goal of everyone in the survey research community. As web surveys continue to increase in frequency of implementation\, the focus on data quality of this mode should be a priority. Across two experiments\, we investigated conditions under which signaling personal relevance\, via targeting information to audiences based on identities\, backfires. In particular\, we assessed how activation of personal characteristics (e.g.\, identities\, health goals\, and both identities and goals)\, as well as context cues (e.g.\, time of year)\, impact persuasion. Because people with higher body mass indexes (BMIs) are frequently targets of weight stigma\, particularly within health contexts\, we expected that perceiving relevance based on weight identities would elicit identity threat and subsequently inhibit persuasion for people with higher\, versus lower\, BMIs. Across studies\, participants were told they received information about obesity due to chance (control condition)\, or after providing their demographics (e.g.\, weight status\; Studies 1–2)\, health goals (Study 2)\, or demographics and goals (Study 2). Findings revealed that\, particularly for participants with higher BMIs\, being targeted to receive information about obesity and obesity-related illness increased perceived relevance among recipients\, which predicted increases in irritation and self-conscious emotions. Negative emotional responding produced heterogenous\, but primarily deleterious\, effects on self-efficacy and behavioral intentions to engage in healthy behavior because recipients felt unfairly judged (Study 2). Study 2 determined that targeting on goals and changes in context (e.g.\, stronger beliefs that change is possible at New Year's) decreased the link between perceived relevance and feeling judged. Collectively\, this work shows that leveraging message relevance may inhibit persuasion for target audiences when they feel unfairly judged. As such they enable the study of important phenomena which otherwise is impractical using classical or quantum techniques. However\, RMD models have a significantly complex formulation\, making fast\, scalable and high fidelity RMD simulations extremely challenging to achieve. In this talk\, I will present our work towards addressing both the scalability and fidelity challenges. I will start by describing the parallel algorithms and numerical techniques that we developed for a fast implementation of the Reax Force Field (ReaxFF)\, which is used by hundreds of researchers worldwide. Particular emphasis will be on novel solvers we recently developed for the dynamic charge distribution problem that constitutes the most important scalability bottleneck in large RMD simulations. I will conclude the talk by outlining our efforts towards addressing the fidelity challenge\, i) through an automated force field framework for RMD models\, ii) by developing a novel hybrid ReaxFF/AMBER simulation software in the spirit of QM/MM techniques.\n\nBio: H. Using a designer polariton platform we have developed\, we reveal a long sought after Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer like phase in a particle-hole-photon strongly-coupled system. Coupling two trapped polariton condensates through both coherent tunneling and incoherent dissipation\, we form a model system of rich nonlinear dynamics where new\, equidistant frequency lines emerge via the limit cycles at Hopft bifurcation. Using two-dimensional monolayer crystals with exceptionally strong light-matter interactions\, we control the exciton-photon interactions from the incoherent limit to the coherent limit with simple mirrors and laser pulses\, showing the promise of the system for photonic applications based on coherent light-matter interactions.
