SUMMARY:Exhibition:Circulating the Avant-Garde: Aesthetic Counter-Publics in the Little Magazines\, 1890-1920
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to advances in color lithography and photo-engraving as well as resurgent interest in small-press publishing\, richly illustrated and typeset “little magazines” flourished between 1890 and 1920. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Although the little magazines’ resistance to mainstream journalism shortened their lifespan and restricted their circulation\, their experimental approach has had a lasting impact on our sense of magazines as flexible aesthetic and social media.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Civitates Orbis Terrarum: Braun & Hogenberg’s Evolving World
DESCRIPTION:Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cities of the World)\, the first standardized city atlas\, contains over 540 maps and views between its six volumes. First published in 1572 by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590)\, Civitates was first intended as a companion to Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. New editions of the city atlas continued to be printed through 1617. Hogenberg\, one of the most prolific engravers of the time\, was joined by many other engravers in creating the Civitates. Braun edited the work and provided the descriptions of the cities on the verso of each plate. This exhibit contains 18 works from the Civitates\, including many from the Clark Library’s holdings. Also included are reproductions of large panoramas Amsterdam\, London\, and St. Petersburg that reflect the evolution of city mapping through the 17th and 18th centuries.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Football & Pets: Paper Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit of Steve Wirtz’ sculptures features a selection of his Dynamic Football series and animal works. The Dynamic Football laminated paper works explore compositions of action\, allowing the artist to exploit the properties of the medium. The pieces are constructed by gluing many layers of paper over wire armatures. When dry\, the sculptures are painted in an often splashy\, sketchy style. Wirtz’ silly animal works are what the artist is best known for\, and they take shape in his Goetzville\, Michigan studio.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Oil on Water: Painting on Linen
DESCRIPTION:Danielle Eubank is an award-winning artist who has been on four international sailing expeditions and painted every ocean on the planet to raise awareness about the oceans and climate change. Her large paintings are emotive abstract portraits of specific bodies of water. The Oil on Water exhibition features Eubank’s oil on linen paintings of the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. She creates patterns within patterns\, representing vertical stacks of rhythms. The undulating forms\, such as water ripples\, oil slicks\, and refuse\, combined with the memories that water evokes\, makes her work eye-opening\, yet soothing and sensual. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Lobby\, Floor 1 \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Pen & Ink Queens
DESCRIPTION:Introverted and shy by nature\, Laura Cavanagh uses her art as an outlet to create humorous larger than life personalities. In Pen & Ink Queens\, Cavanagh draws inspiration from medieval and renaissance-era garments to adorn quirky\, queenly figures. Cavanagh works in a style that is hyper-detailed and intricate\, so she remains present during the creative process. A true Michigander\, Cavanagh was born and raised in Southeast Michigan\, attended U-M\, and currently works in Detroit. Cavanagh makes a concerted effort to exhibit as much as possible in her home state\, and when she is not in her studio\, you can find her cooking\, practicing yoga or playing with her cat\, Benji.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ваза: Copper & Brass Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Victoria (Vika) Bulgakova grew up in Ukraine\, a part of the former Soviet Union. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1994\, and for the next 22 years\, New York became her home. In 2016\, she moved to Michigan to pursue an MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She found the raw beauty of Detroit inspiring and kept her metalsmithing studio practice in the city. The copper and brass vessels in her Ваза series and other included works are a meditation on fluidity of memories: their ability to shift from reflection to re-invention over time. Each vessel potentially holds something within its boundaries\, whether tangible or not. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Central Bank of the Future Conference
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally\, central banks have served three policy functions – monetary policy\, payments systems oversight\, and financial institution supervision. This conference will convene international experts and practitioners to examine how these core functions contribute to financial inclusion\, poverty allevation\, and a more inclusive economy – and what could be improved.\n\nThe conference contributes to a research initiative undertaken by the University of Michigan’s Center on Finance\, Law & Policy\, in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to consider how the role of a central bank could evolve in the future and enable central banks to make greater contributions toward financial inclusion. Ultimately\, the research intends to identify technologies\, processes\, or tools that could benefit a central bank in supporting public policy objectives related to inclusion\, and consider whether other sectors\, including philanthropy\, might have a role to play in supporting the development of those tools. \n\nRegistration to the event is free. Speakers and attendees will include individuals from standards-setting bodies\, central banks and other financial regulators\, and policymakers\, as well as futurists and technologists\, and other financial ecosystem stakeholders.\n\nFor more information visit http://financelawpolicy.umich.edu/central-bank-of-the-future-conference

Multiple bottlenecks exist during discovery\, product development\, manufacturing process development\, and cGMP manufacturing leading to timelines from discovery through first in man testing often averaging 7-11 years. RoosterBio has developed and commercialized novel hMSC bioprocess systems that are designed for rapid process development and cGMP tech transfer to radically reduce development timelines to as little as 2-4 years. Requirements for implementation of scalable bioreactor production systems will also be addressed\, and data will be presented from 50L scale microcarrier-based processes with CQAs for both hMSCs and EVs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Graffiti as Devotion along the Nile: El-Kurru\, Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Ancient graffiti provide a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals in antiquity. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered in a rock-cut temple by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.\n\nCurators: Geoff Emberling and Suzanne Davis\n\nView the online exhibition:\nhttp://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/graffiti-el-kurru/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Other Crusoes\, Other Islands: Mapping a Complex Legacy
DESCRIPTION:On the 300th anniversary of the publication of The Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe\, of York\, Mariner\, this exhibit interrogates the troubled legacy of Daniel Defoe’s seminal English novel. It also explores how creators have pushed back against the colonialist\, hyper-masculine\, and racist ethos of the text by using the castaway narrative to explore self-sufficiency\, otherness\, and the role of gendered and racialized ideas in constructing the self.\n\nThis novel of shipwreck\, survival\, and rescue has become a cultural touchstone. Today\, many people who haven’t read the novel still feel familiar with key plot elements\, Robinson Crusoe\, and Friday. Yet\, there is less familiarity with how both the original text and many of the adaptations of Robinson Crusoe have fed into and reinforced narratives of imperialism and racism. Drawing on the Hubbard Collection of Imaginary Voyages - one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of editions\, translations\, adaptations\, and spin-offs of Robinson Crusoe - Other Crusoes\, Other Islands seeks to understand how readers and writers have engaged with the story since its initial publication in 1719.\n\nContent Advisory: Please be aware that some items in this exhibit feature racist imagery and potentially painful content. Although Robinson Crusoe is often treated as children’s literature and this exhibit includes children’s books and board games\, it is not an exhibit geared towards children and reflects the significant shifts over time in ideas about what is appropriate for children.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Yo Tengo Nombre
DESCRIPTION:This series of paintings was inspired by the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and the images of migrant families being separated and detained at the US-Mexico border that dominated media outlets across the nation since the summer of 2017. The exhibition also includes nearly 100 I.D. photos of migrant children from a Texas holding center. Buentello took the photos in 2014 while working for an intake agency.\n\n\"Focusing on images from the US media sources that exposed the violence of migrants’ dehumanization\, vulnerability\, fear\, loss\, and criminalization\, the paintings document the embodiment of state-authorized brutality and erasures of personhood.\" -Ruth Leonela Buentello\n\nThis project is funded by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Education Inequality and Income Inequality in South Africa since the End of Apartheid
DESCRIPTION:When apartheid ended in 1994\, South Africa had one of the highest levels of income inequality in the world. Inequality in education was both a cause and a consequence of high income inequality. After 25 years there has been little change in income inequality\, in spite of improvements in levels of education and education inequality. This presentation for those 50 and over analyzes trends in education inequality and income inequality and examines how they interact in South Africa’s highly unequal society.\n\nDavid Lam is Director of the Institute for Social Research and Professor of Economics at the University of Michigan. He received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California\, Berkeley. He is Honorary Professor of Economics at the University of Cape Town\, South Africa\, where he has done collaborative research since 1996. His research in South Africa analyzes links between education\, labor markets\, and income inequality.\n\nThis is the fourth in a six-lecture series. The subject is South Africa: Past\, Present\, and a Look Forward. The next lecture will be October 10\, 2019. The title is: South African Performing Arts in the New Democracy.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nature a Moment: Visions of the World from Three Korean-American Artists
DESCRIPTION:Three Chicago-area Korean-American artists render deeply personal interpretations of the natural world in the exhibit “Nature a Moment” at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Using woodcut\, painting on canvas\, and mixed media\, Linda Hyong\, Sung Eun Hong\, and Seong Ok Lee explore the world of flowers\, gardens\, and nature in vivid works that slow time to a fleeting present moment.\n\nLinda Hyong is a University of Michigan alumna and former teaching assistant in the U-M Stamps School of Art & Design. She draws her inspiration from Claude Monet’s water lily garden in France to create her own modern interpretation of impressionism. Seong Ok Lee is inspired by flowers\, which she believes are the most beautiful forms in nature. In her dream-like\, nearly abstract paintings\, Sung Eun Hong communicates her vision of what she calls “pure dreams and fantasy.”\n\nExhibit runs September 14 through November 15\, 2019 at the\n\nUniversity of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, 1800 N. Dixboro Rd.\, Ann Arbor. Free.

Much has been said regarding these refugees\, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.\n\nThis exhibit uses the data collected from a Photovoice project\, combining photography and transcriptions from groups discussions with adolescent refugees to better understand the lived experiences of adolescent refugees. The gallery highlights five main themes that were discussed: Stability and Security\, Interpersonal Difficulties\, Rooting Factors\, Personal Growth\, and Contribution.\n\n“I wish I could help out people… Imma give them everything. Because they are my people\, I have to save my people.” -Alex

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color  to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support of this exhibition:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics:
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 60s and 70s\, artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. During these decades\, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. Their new formal and intellectual strategies—seen here across large-scale and miniature work—dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s in a politically shifting American landscape.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice
DESCRIPTION:In September 2019\, the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design will host the New Media Caucus 2019 Symposium and Exhibition\, Border Control.  Symposium and exhibition events will take place in Ann Arbor at the Stamps School of Art and Design (2000 Bonisteel Blvd.) and Stamps Gallery (201 S. Division St.).\n\nExhibition Dates: September 20 - November 10\, 2019\nSymposium Dates: September 19 - 22\, 2019\nGuest Curator: Allison Collins\, Media Arts Curator\, Western Front\n\nCurated by Allison Collins in collaboration with Carrie Edinger and Srimoyee Mitra.\nIn partnership with the New Media Caucus \n\nHuman migration is a defining issue of the 21st century\, often calling into question the relevance\, role\, and responsibilities of national borders across the globe. As individuals seek refuge from geopolitical and environmental forces\, we become an increasingly globalized community. Demarcations of all types are simultaneously porous and closed\, defensive and receptive\, and seen in almost every facet of our existence. Border Control responds to these conditions with an open-ended question\, asking: “How has humanity made sense of the world in relation to borders and boundaries\, both physically and psychologically?” While positioned within (or outside of) defined spaces and identities\, human refusal of such literal definitions is paramount. Even while lines drawn have important consequences for lived reality\, the winds\, currents\, and natural energies of the Earth deny enclosures and definitions that politics and maps might suggest.\n\nDrawn from practices that are touched or driven by new media\, Border Control assembles works by artists who consider geographical contexts\, patterns of migration\, displacement\, and statelessness. Collectively\, they offer projects with subterfuge\, refusal\, and reconsideration of imposed state-sanctioned boundaries.\n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Copies and Invention in East Asia
DESCRIPTION:Far from being frowned upon as uncreative\, in China\, Korea\, and Japan\, copying has long been considered a valuable practice. Through works of art spanning ancient to contemporary times\, Copies and Invention in East Asia challenges our understanding of originality\, and presents copying as an act of imaginative interpretation. The exhibition includes burial goods that conjure a world for the deceased\; Buddhist sculptures produced in multiples to amplify religious experience and meaning\; paintings in which a master’s brushstrokes are faithfully duplicated as a way of shaping the self\; and contemporary works that address multiplicity and duplication in the modern world.\n\nLead support is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, Center for Japanese Studies\, Nam Center for Korean Studies\, School of Information\, and College of Engineering. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Fabrication Studio at the Duderstadt Center\, the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures\, and SeeMeCNC 3D Printers.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Walter Oltmann
DESCRIPTION:Infant Skull II\, a woven “tapestry” made out of very fine aluminum wire\, only reveals its shape when seen from afar. Drawing inspiration from his country’s basketry traditions\, the South African artist Walter Oltmann (b. 1960) alternates densely layered sections with open spaces\, allowing the underlying surface of the work to show through. The skull that emerges is\, in a South African context\, evocative of the Cradle of Humankind—a series of caves outside Johannesburg\, where some of the oldest hominin fossils in the world have been found.\n \nThe work complements UMMA’s renowned and growing collection of historical and contemporary African art and reminds us of the central role of Africa in the history of humankind. The purchase was made possible thanks to the generosity of UMMA Director's Acquisition Committee.\n\nThis acquisition was made possible by the generosity of the UMMA Director's Acquisition Committee\, 2016.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Is Japanese Trade Policy Finally Proactive? Japan’s Multilateral Leadership in TPP
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1980s\, Japan’s foreign policy\, including its trade policy\, has been known to be “reactive.” Subsequent studies have modified this rather monotonic characterization\, but to date\, no one has found that Japan is willing and able to take a strong leadership role in a multilateral setting. By historical standards\, however\, Japan’s leadership in concluding TPP-11 negotiations was rather remarkable. Is Japan finally proactive? It will be demonstrated that Japan found itself in an unusual set of circumstances in TPP-11 and that one cannot generalize from this episode that Japan is now a proactive international player. \n \nKeisuke Iida is a Professor in the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics at the University of Tokyo. His recent publications include Japan’s Security and Economic Dependence on China and the United States. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and formerly taught at Princeton University and Aoyama Gakuin University.\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LACS Central American Contexts Series. A Fixed but Porous Border: Nineteenth Century Negotiations over the Mexico-Guatemala Frontier
DESCRIPTION:News coverage and political discourse around the ongoing immigration debate and the situation on the US-Mexico border rarely includes the historical and geographic contexts of migration in Central America\, where many current migrants begin their journeys. Throughout the fall semester\, the LACS Central American Contexts Series will sponsor speakers and events at U-M in an effort to more deeply contextualize the lived experience of diverse Central Americans and the geographic\, social\, and political relationship between Central America and southern Mexico. \n \nIn the first event of this fall speaker series\, Dr. Casey Lurtz\, assistant professor of history at Johns Hopkins University\, will speak about the history of Mexico's other border\, the southern border with Guatemala. This lecture will expand on the research for her recent book\, “From the Grounds Up: Building an Export Economy in Southern Mexico” (Stanford University Press\, 2019)\, as well as her recent piece on the Stanford University Press blog (available at https://stanfordpress.typepad.com/blog/2019/07/what-we-talk-about-when-we-talk-about-borders.html).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Webcomics and Depression
DESCRIPTION:Because they appear in social media feeds and are easily shared online\, webcomics can be a powerful method of solidarity building for marginalized audiences. In this public lecture\, Dr. Leah Misemer will discuss how the spread of Allie Brosh's webcomic Hyperbole and a Half increases the visibility of the experience of depression\, while the comments section provides a space for conversations about depression that counteract the feelings of isolation associated with the illness. Based on this case study\, Misemer suggests that\, as comics and digital media\, webcomics are uniquely positioned to raise awareness about and to counter the social stigma surrounding mental illness.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Departmental Seminar (899): Eunhye Song\, Pennsylvania State University
DESCRIPTION:The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nThe seminar will be followed by a reception in the IOE Commons (Room 1709) from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.\n\nTitle: Sequential Bayesian risk set estimation for robust simulation optimization under input model uncertainty\n\nAbstract:\nThis talk discusses a new way of approaching a discrete simulation optimization\nproblem when the input distributions of the simulation model are estimated with error from real-world observations. This problem is known as ‘simulation optimization under input uncertainty’ and has been studied actively in recent years. Most approaches provide either asymptotic guarantee that the selected solution is the real-world optimum as the real-world sample size increases or find the optimum to an alternative formulation such as the distributionally robust optimum. This work focuses on finite-sample inference on the relative performances of the solutions while uncertainty about the input models are captured by their Bayesian posteriors. A user-specified smallest optimality gap of interest is reflected to control conservativeness of the procedure\, so that two solutions whose expected performances are within is considered practically indistinguishable. The -level risk set of solution is defined as the set of solutions whose expected performance is practically better () than with significant probability () under the posterior on the input models. The size of the risk set shows robustness of solution\; an empty risk set implies that there is no practically better solution than even with input uncertainty. For efficient estimation of the risk set\, the expected performance is modeled\nas a Gaussian process (GP) that takes a solution and a collection of input distributions generated from their posterior as inputs. A one-step look-ahead sampling rule is proposed to choose which solution-distributions pair to simulate in the next iteration to minimize the estimation error of the risk set.\n\nBio:\nEunhye Song is the Harold and Inge Marcus Early Career Assistant Professor in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Penn State University. She earned her PhD degree in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences at Northwestern University in 2017 and MS and BS in Industrial and Systems Engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2012 and 2010\, respectively. Her research interests include design of simulation experiments\, large-scale discrete simulation optimization\, input uncertainty quantification\, and simulation optimization in the presence of model risk. She has collaborated\nwith Simio\, a leading discrete-event simulation software company\, on developing a statistical tool to quantify input uncertainty for a Simio model\, which is now a standard part of Simio’s software product. She also worked with General Motors’ R&D group on global sensitivity analysis of Vehicle Content Optimization simulator\, which GM uses to find the optimal vehicle content portfolios of their major vehicle lines to maximize GM’s market share and profit. She is an active member of INFORMS Simulation Society (I-Sim) and currently serving on the I-Sim Diversity Committee chair.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Rackham North: It’s in the Syllabus and Other First-Generation College Student Experiences
DESCRIPTION:An immersive\, playfully disorienting encounter\, It’s in the Syllabus and Other First Generation College Student (FGCS) Experiences offers participants a complex view of a heterogenous identity group: students who are the first generation in their family to attend college. Because this session focuses on interventions instructors can make in the classroom\, it is appropriate for faculty\, graduate student instructors\, and staff who have an instructional role. Participants witness several different intersecting stories about FGCS experiences and challenges\, which confront stereotypes about who FGCS are and what they bring to the classroom. Through facilitated activities and discussion\, instructors strategize about ways to make their classrooms more inclusive and foster belonging for FGCS.\n**The theatrical portion of this session contains strong language.\nIn this session\, participants will:\n\nDiscuss barriers that create challenges for FGCS.\nIdentify specific classroom strategies to better support FGCS.\nConsider how to deploy resources on campus relevant to FGCS.\n\n**Early departures can be disruptive to the performance and other participants. Please only register if you are able to attend the entire workshop.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/qgg3e.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CLASP Alumni of the Year Lecture - Dr. Mei-Ching Fok
DESCRIPTION:Our guest for this year's CLASP Alumni of the Year Lecture will be Dr. Mei-Ching Fok of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. \n\nDr. Fok will present a lecture entitled \"From RAM to CIMI\"\n\nAbstract: \nDuring my graduate study in the department of Atmospheric Oceanic and Space Sciences (AOSS)\, now called Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering (CLaSP)\, I was charged to develop a model of the energetic ions in the inner magnetosphere known as the ring current. The model was very simple by today’s standards\, assuming a basic dipole magnetic field and equatorially mirroring particles only. Nevertheless\, the model contained unique features such as\, inclusion of a dynamic plasmasphere model and energy transfer between the hot ring current (energies of several keV) and cold plasmasphere particles (energies of a few eV). After I left Michigan\, the model was further developed at AOSS to include all pitch angles and wave-particles interactions\, and was renamed the Ring current-Atmosphere interaction Model (RAM). During my post-doc years at NASA\, I used ionospheric foot points to define flux tubes/spatial grid. This change prepared my model to couple with the famous Rice Convection Model (RCM)\, in which spatial grid is also fixed at the ionosphere. The combined model was called the Comprehensive Ring Current Model (CRCM). This marked a further evolution of the modeling approach as it considers electric coupling between the ionosphere and magnetosphere\, and provides full pitch-angle distribution of ring current particles. As space weather and radiation belt prediction became more and more popular\, a Radiation Belt Environment (RBE) model was created with similar structure as the CRCM but was extended to relativistic energies and considered diffusion from various wave modes. Many scientific studies and space weather predictions were carried out using the CRCM and the RBE model. In the meantime\, both models were coupled with global MHD models to study solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions. In recent years\, the CRCM and the RBE model were combined into one model capable of studying the inner magnetospheric populations from the cold plasmasphere\, to the hot ring current\, and the very energetic radiation belts. This newly combined model was aptly named Comprehensive Inner Magnetosphere-Ionosphere (CIMI) model. In this talk\, I will highlight achievements attained by these models and future developments of CIMI. I will also share my experiences and thoughts on how to face struggles and challenges as a scientist and a modeler.\n\nBiography: \nDr. Fok's main research interests are studies of the radiation belts and ring current during geomagnetic active periods\, understanding the mechanisms responsible for their intensification and decay by numerical modeling and data analysis. She has developed a complex model\, named as the Comprehensive Inner Magnetosphere-Ionosphere (CIMI) Model\, that can compute and predict the energetic plasma fluxes in the radiation belts-ring current region. Dr. Fok was a participating scientist of the IMAGE mission and is the Project Scientist of the TWINS mission. She is heavily involved in neutral atom imaging. The modeling tools she developed have contributed greatly in interpreting images from the neutral atom imagers on IMAGE and TWINS. Dr. Fok is also involved in the Van Allen Probes mission. Her CIMI model is running in real time to predict energetic ion and electron fluxes that Van Allen Probes satellites would observe.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar: Locating and learning from bright spots among the world’s coral reefs
DESCRIPTION:The continuing and rapid global decline of coral reefs calls for new approaches to sustain reefs and the millions of people who depend on them. In addition to environmental factors\, there are socioeconomic drivers that influence the condition of coral reef ecosystems\, though reef governance rarely focus on explicitly managing these. My colleagues and I analyzed data from >1800 tropical reef sites worldwide to quantify how key socioeconomic and environmental drivers are related to reef fish biomass\, a key indicator of ecosystem condition and resource availability. Our global analysis reveals that the strongest driver of reef fish biomass is our metric of potential interactions with urban centres (market gravity)\, with important\, but smaller\, roles of local management\, human demographics\, socioeconomic development\, and environmental conditions. These results highlight multiple underutilized policy levers that could help to sustain coral reefs\, such as dampening the negative impact of markets. Second\, drawing on theory and practice in human health and rural development\, we use a positive deviance (bright spots) analysis to systematically identify coral reefs that have substantially higher biomass than expected\, given their socioeconomic and environmental conditions. Importantly\, bright spots were not simply comprised of remote areas with low fishing pressure- they include localities where human populations and use of ecosystems resources is high\, potentially providing novel insights into how communities have successfully confronted strong drivers of change. Uncovering the mechanisms that underpin the ability of bright spots to confront high pressures may form a basis for novel policy approaches.\n\nView YouTube video of seminar: https://youtu.be/qVywZwcWMiY

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Finding One's Racial Self: It's Always Personal
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores the intersection between autobiography and history. It contends that the personal often shapes understanding\, reason\, perspective\, and accounting. It centers on a handful of life events to explore and exam how we must think and write about race\, historically. By juxtaposing the personal and the historical\, it asks questions about boundaries\, understandings and truths. It argues that such a juxtaposition centers on the multipositional self. \n\nNoted social historian\, award-winning author\, and educational leader Earl Lewis is the founding director of the University of Michigan Center for Social Solutions. A professor of history and Afroamerican and African studies\, Lewis is president emeritus of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (2013-18). At Michigan\, Lewis and colleagues in the center will address three core areas of social concern: diversity and race\, water\, and the dignity of labor in an automated world. He previously served as executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at Emory University as well as the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of History and African American Studies (2004-2012). Prior to Emory\, Lewis served on the faculty at the University of Michigan (1989-2004) and the University of California at Berkeley (1984-1989). In addition to professorial roles and titles (Robin D.G. Kelley and Elsa Barkley Brown Collegiate Professor)\, he served Michigan as vice provost and dean of the Rackham School of Graduate Studies (1998-2004). A frequent lecturer\, he has authored or edited nine books\, scores of essays\, articles and comments. A member of numerous national committees and boards of directors or trustees\, he is past president of the Organization of American Historians. He is an alum of Concordia College-Moorhead (1978) and the University of Minnesota (PhD\, history\, 1984)\, which honored him most recently with the College of Liberal Arts Outstanding Alumni Award (2018). He is the recipient of several honorary degrees\, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. \n\nFree and open to the public. \n\nThis event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Other:Nonadiabatic and Quantum Dynamics in Materials
DESCRIPTION:Dynamics of excited states plays a determining role in many materials such as solar cells\, photocatalysts\, or photo-actuated molecular switches. Electron-hole recombination\, interfacial charge transfer\, nonradiative excitation energy relaxation\, photoinduced nuclear reorganization\, and bond breaking - all require accounting for nonadiabatic (NA) effects. Nuclear tunneling and zero-point energies constitute quantum nuclear effects that may non-trivially affect the electron-nuclear dynamics. Understanding details of nonadiabatic and quantum dynamics (NA/QD) at the atomistic level requires advanced tools and methodologies. Often\, one also needs to address the computational limitations due to systems’ sizes and processes’ time scales\, what makes modeling NA/QD in realistic materials a challenging problem.\nOver the past few years\, my group has been addressing various methodological problems in NA/QD to enable computationally affordable yet reasonably accurate modeling of excited states dynamics in extended atomistic systems. In this presentation\, I will overview several approaches we have developed in this regard and will illustrate their utility in modeling charge transfer dynamics in organic and inorganic solar-harvesting systems. The developments in three key areas will be highlighted: a) modeling NA/QD in extended systems via simplified semiclassical and fragmentation approaches as well as via innovative software that leverage linear-scaling electronic structure methods\; b) modeling slow NA/QD via the machine-learning-inspired quasi-stochastic Hamiltonian approach and via the enhanced sampling scheme\; c) accounting for quantum nuclear effects via the entangled trajectories Hamiltonian dynamics (ETHD) method. Along the way\, I will touch on other important methodological questions such as the role of phase correction\, decoherence\, and the effect of electronic structure choice. Last but not least\, I will highlight chemical insights we have gained from the NA/QD modeling in all-inorganic perovskites\, quantum dots\, and materials’ heterojunctions.\n \n \n \n \n \n \nAlexey Akimov (University of Buffalo)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Stephen Jones: Hatology
DESCRIPTION:Born in Cheshire\, England\, and schooled in Liverpool\, milliner Stephen Jones is a fashion icon. Coming of age during London’s street fashion boom in the late 1970s\, Jones first made a name for himself as an uncompromising style-blazer at the legendary Blitz nightclub\, where he was perpetually crowned with a striking hat of his own idiosyncratic design. By 1980\, Jones had opened his first millinery salon in the heart of London’s Covent Garden. Those premises soon became a place of pilgrimage and patronage\, as everyone from rock stars to royalty\, from Boy George to Diana\, Princess of Wales\, identified Jones as the milliner who would help them make arresting headlines. Nearly forty years later\, Jones’s era-defining edge continues to attract a celebrity clientele which includes Rihanna\, Lady Gaga\, Mick Jagger\, and the Royal Family. Now\, as ever\, at the forefront of fashion\, his beguiling hats routinely grace the most celebrated magazine covers and enliven window displays of the world’s most stylish stores. From runways to racecourses\, from pop-promos to royal garden parties\, millinery by Stephen Jones adds the exclamation mark to every fashion statement.\n\n Supported by Linda Dresner and Design Core Detroit.\n\n Left photo courtesy of @dafyddjonesphotographer

SUMMARY:Performance:Sense and Sensibility
DESCRIPTION:Adapted by Kate Hamill. \nBased on the novel by Jane Austen. \nDirected by Priscilla Lindsay. \n\nWhen sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood are left financially destitute by their father’s sudden passing\, they must navigate the perilous social circles in their new\, vulnerable status. As potential suitors come and go\, so do their hopes for true love. Full of gossip\, humor\, and heart-felt moments\, this classic story examines the effects of societal pressures on love and life. The play Sense and Sensibility premiered in 2014 at New York City’s Bedlam Theater Company\, returning for another\, longer run in 2016\, and was named The New York Times Critic’s Pick for both years. The New York Times calls Sense and Sensibility a “bouncy\, jaunty take on Austen…[that] remains remarkably true to the values and priorities of its source.”
