Stamps School of Art & Design, with support from the Nam Center for Korean Studies at the University of Michigan.\r\n\r\nThrough visually and auditorily immersive installation, artist JuYeon Kim recognizes, illuminates, and honors the unimaginable suffering and enduring spirit of the Korean \u201ccomfort women\u201d (wianbu in Korean) who were forced into sex slavery by the Japanese military during World War II.\r\n\r\nIt is estimated over 200,000 Korean women fell prey to Japanese soldiers during this time period, many were as young as 14 years old. The girls and women, often from rural villages, were enslaved in a variety of ways, including kidnapping, coercion, or being convinced with lies of paid factory work during desperate times of famine. Victims of forced sterilization, many died during their time of enslavement. Those who survived often did not return home after the war for fear of stigma and rejection. For much of history, their story has remained untold.\r\n\r\nThrough WiAn, Kim invites viewers to join her in the recognition of this atrocity \u2014 and in providing comfort to the souls of these women. Through meditative poetry, a soundscape by classical music composer George Tsontakis, and sculptural objects, Kim creates a physical space for the souls of these women to be honored, to be comforted, to let go of the past, and to move forward.\u00a0\r\n\r\nVisitors to the exhibition encounter an ethereal white gardenscape of transparent and opaque fictitious flora, comprised of many different plant specimens. White, the traditional color for Korean funerals, returns the women to their rightful purity and innocence. At the center of the garden, two palanquins engraved with original poetry invite the souls of the wianbu to take rest from their arduous journey to be carried like royalty, to receive unequivocal compassion and kindness. A transparent door and trellis, also engraved with original poetry, invites souls to move lightly, unburdened, to the next chapter of being.\r\n\r\nIn a time when the #metoo movement has brought about a cultural reckoning, Kim\u2019s work also provides comfort, strength, and a space of contemplation for the living, to all who have suffered and still suffer at the hands of systemic power inequity.\r\n\r\nJuYeon Kim is the 2019 Roman J. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan), involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples, pyramids, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (\u201cMeroitic\u201d) period of Kush, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals\u2019 thoughts, values, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos, text, and interactive media presentations. The series brings together multigenerational artists and thinkers in contemporary art, design, art history, and related fields who have shaped, and are shaping, current discourses on gender and the fight for equality.\r\n\r\nArturo Herrera is an interdisciplinary artist based in Detroit, Michigan. Herrera explores issues across national boundaries, including the politics of race and language, borders, and self-disclosure of sexual orientation. He received bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in fine art in Canada, at the University of Windsor, with concentrations in sculpture, photography, and performance art. Herrera\u2019s most recent presentation was at the Detroit Historical Museum, as part of the show Looking For America, an event organized by the New American Economy, American University School of Public Affairs, and CuriosityConnects.us. Previously, his work has been presented at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Venice International Performance Art Week in Venice, Italy.\r\n\r\nChace Morris (Mic Write) is a poet\/emcee from Detroit. He is currently working on the 2nd installment of his critically-acclaimed EP, ONUS Chain, a video trilogy & music EP hailed by Okayplayer as \u201cone of the best protest records of 2016.\u201d Chace is a 2018 MAP Fund recipient, 2-time Knight Arts Challenge recipient, a Kresge Literary Fellow, a Callaloo Fellow, 2-time Rustbelt Poetry Slam Champion & the recipient of the 2016 Alain Locke Award from the Detroit Institute Of Arts.
