SUMMARY:Exhibition:Civitates Orbis Terrarum: Braun & Hogenberg’s Evolving World
DESCRIPTION:Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cities of the World)\, the first standardized city atlas\, contains over 540 maps and views between its six volumes. First published in 1572 by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590)\, Civitates was first intended as a companion to Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. New editions of the city atlas continued to be printed through 1617. Hogenberg\, one of the most prolific engravers of the time\, was joined by many other engravers in creating the Civitates. Braun edited the work and provided the descriptions of the cities on the verso of each plate. This exhibit contains 18 works from the Civitates\, including many from the Clark Library’s holdings. Also included are reproductions of large panoramas Amsterdam\, London\, and St. Petersburg that reflect the evolution of city mapping through the 17th and 18th centuries.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Football & Pets: Paper Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit of Steve Wirtz’ sculptures features a selection of his Dynamic Football series and animal works. The Dynamic Football laminated paper works explore compositions of action\, allowing the artist to exploit the properties of the medium. The pieces are constructed by gluing many layers of paper over wire armatures. When dry\, the sculptures are painted in an often splashy\, sketchy style. Wirtz’ silly animal works are what the artist is best known for\, and they take shape in his Goetzville\, Michigan studio.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Oil on Water: Painting on Linen
DESCRIPTION:Danielle Eubank is an award-winning artist who has been on four international sailing expeditions and painted every ocean on the planet to raise awareness about the oceans and climate change. Her large paintings are emotive abstract portraits of specific bodies of water. The Oil on Water exhibition features Eubank’s oil on linen paintings of the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. She creates patterns within patterns\, representing vertical stacks of rhythms. The undulating forms\, such as water ripples\, oil slicks\, and refuse\, combined with the memories that water evokes\, makes her work eye-opening\, yet soothing and sensual. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Lobby\, Floor 1 \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Pen & Ink Queens
DESCRIPTION:Introverted and shy by nature\, Laura Cavanagh uses her art as an outlet to create humorous larger than life personalities. In Pen & Ink Queens\, Cavanagh draws inspiration from medieval and renaissance-era garments to adorn quirky\, queenly figures. Cavanagh works in a style that is hyper-detailed and intricate\, so she remains present during the creative process. A true Michigander\, Cavanagh was born and raised in Southeast Michigan\, attended U-M\, and currently works in Detroit. Cavanagh makes a concerted effort to exhibit as much as possible in her home state\, and when she is not in her studio\, you can find her cooking\, practicing yoga or playing with her cat\, Benji.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ваза: Copper & Brass Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Victoria (Vika) Bulgakova grew up in Ukraine\, a part of the former Soviet Union. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1994\, and for the next 22 years\, New York became her home. In 2016\, she moved to Michigan to pursue an MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She found the raw beauty of Detroit inspiring and kept her metalsmithing studio practice in the city. The copper and brass vessels in her Ваза series and other included works are a meditation on fluidity of memories: their ability to shift from reflection to re-invention over time. Each vessel potentially holds something within its boundaries\, whether tangible or not. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Other Crusoes\, Other Islands: Mapping a Complex Legacy
DESCRIPTION:On the 300th anniversary of the publication of The Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe\, of York\, Mariner\, this exhibit interrogates the troubled legacy of Daniel Defoe’s seminal English novel. It also explores how creators have pushed back against the colonialist\, hyper-masculine\, and racist ethos of the text by using the castaway narrative to explore self-sufficiency\, otherness\, and the role of gendered and racialized ideas in constructing the self.\n\nThis novel of shipwreck\, survival\, and rescue has become a cultural touchstone. Today\, many people who haven’t read the novel still feel familiar with key plot elements\, Robinson Crusoe\, and Friday. Yet\, there is less familiarity with how both the original text and many of the adaptations of Robinson Crusoe have fed into and reinforced narratives of imperialism and racism. Drawing on the Hubbard Collection of Imaginary Voyages - one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of editions\, translations\, adaptations\, and spin-offs of Robinson Crusoe - Other Crusoes\, Other Islands seeks to understand how readers and writers have engaged with the story since its initial publication in 1719.\n\nContent Advisory: Please be aware that some items in this exhibit feature racist imagery and potentially painful content. Although Robinson Crusoe is often treated as children’s literature and this exhibit includes children’s books and board games\, it is not an exhibit geared towards children and reflects the significant shifts over time in ideas about what is appropriate for children.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Yo Tengo Nombre
DESCRIPTION:This series of paintings was inspired by the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and the images of migrant families being separated and detained at the US-Mexico border that dominated media outlets across the nation since the summer of 2017. The exhibition also includes nearly 100 I.D. photos of migrant children from a Texas holding center. Buentello took the photos in 2014 while working for an intake agency.\n\n\"Focusing on images from the US media sources that exposed the violence of migrants’ dehumanization\, vulnerability\, fear\, loss\, and criminalization\, the paintings document the embodiment of state-authorized brutality and erasures of personhood.\" -Ruth Leonela Buentello\n\nThis project is funded by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nature a Moment: Visions of the World from Three Korean-American Artists
DESCRIPTION:Three Chicago-area Korean-American artists render deeply personal interpretations of the natural world in the exhibit “Nature a Moment” at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Using woodcut\, painting on canvas\, and mixed media\, Linda Hyong\, Sung Eun Hong\, and Seong Ok Lee explore the world of flowers\, gardens\, and nature in vivid works that slow time to a fleeting present moment.\n\nLinda Hyong is a University of Michigan alumna and former teaching assistant in the U-M Stamps School of Art & Design. She draws her inspiration from Claude Monet’s water lily garden in France to create her own modern interpretation of impressionism. Seong Ok Lee is inspired by flowers\, which she believes are the most beautiful forms in nature. In her dream-like\, nearly abstract paintings\, Sung Eun Hong communicates her vision of what she calls “pure dreams and fantasy.”\n\nExhibit runs September 14 through November 15\, 2019 at the\n\nUniversity of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, 1800 N. Dixboro Rd.\, Ann Arbor. Free.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:National Book Tour of Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of October as Filipino American History Month\, join us at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, as we host another stop on the National Book Tour of Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong\, with co-author and publisher\, Gayle Romasanta (from Stockton\, California)\, on Monday\, October 7\, 2019.\n\nAbout Journey for Justice:\n\nIn 2019-2020\, Bridge and Delta Publishing in partnership with the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) and PapaLoDown Agency takes “Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong\,” on a 20+ city national book tour. This is the first nonfiction illustrated children’s book about Filipino American history\, and the first book ever written about Larry Itliong. The children’s book written by the late historian Dawn Bohulano Mabalon\, Ph.D. with Gayle Romasanta and illustrated by Andre Sibayan\, tells the story of forgotten United Farm Workers (UFW) cofounder\, Larry Itliong\, his migration to the United States and his lifelong fight for a farmworkers union. The city of Delano\, California\, was the first stop of the national book tour with events held in Seattle\, WA\; New York\; Washington DC\; Anchorage\, AK\; Santa Ana\, CA\; Houston\, TX\; with future stops in Southfield and Ann Arbor\, MI\; Milwaukee\, WI\; Chicago\, IL\; Wapato\, WA\; Virginia Beach\, VA\; Irvine\, San Diego\, Stockton\, SF Bay Area\, CA\; Lancaster and Philadelphia\, PA\; Honolulu\, HI\; and more.\n\n“Journey for Justice is a significant children’s book about a legendary pioneer in the farmworkers movement. This was the last book that FANHS National Scholar and Trustee Dr. Dawn Bohulano Mabalon\, wrote before she passed away suddenly on Aug. 10\, 2018. We are committed to carry on Dawn’s legacy so that people of all ages can learn more about Filipina/o American history. We support this book and strongly encourage everyone to read it and discuss it with their children\, community\, and educators\,” shares University of Michigan Prof. Emily P. Lawsin\, FANHS National Vice President.\n\nCurrently\, Filipino Americans are the largest Asian American group in 10 of the 13 western states\, the second largest Asian American population in the nation\, and is the oldest Asian population in the nation\, with hardly any mention of their contributions to U.S. history in school textbooks. This book will be the first out of a planned series of four books about Filipino American historical figures for students of all ages\, from 10 and up. A free teacher’s curriculum guide created by Pin@y Educational Partnerships is available at www.bridgedelta.com.\n\nBridge and Delta Publisher and Owner Gayle Romasanta and the Filipino American community celebrate and aim to further Dr. Dawn Mabalon’s work to spread Filipino American history\, especially “Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong\,” Mabalon’s last book. Romasanta says\, “She made history accessible and was a revered community activist. She not only was a scholar\, but her work touched the Filipino\n \nAmerican community on a national scale. She not only saved the remaining Filipino neighborhood Little Manila buildings in her hometown of Stockton and named the area ‘Historic Little Manila\,’ she traveled the country speaking and connecting with the community and spreading her wealth of knowledge about American history\, Filipino American food history\, and more. She was the leading Filipino American historian before her untimely passing.”\n\nThe Journey for Justice National Book Tour in Michigan will include a community visit to Paaralang Pilipino Language and Cultural School\, which is housed in the Philippine American Community Center of Michigan\, in Southfield\, and a book signing reception and guest lectures at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor (in WOMENSTD 151/AMCULT/ASIANPAM 102: Women’s Studies First Year Seminar on Food and Gender in Asian American Communities\, and in AMCULT/ASIANPAM 310: Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies [Race & Ethnicity-Social Sciences] class on the Filipino American Experience).\n\nWhile the Journey for Justice book celebrates Larry Itliong and the history of the Delano Grape Strike\, it also highlights Dr. Dawn Mabalon’s life work as the co-founder of Little Manila Rising (formerly the Little Manila Foundation)\, Filipino American National Historical Society National Scholar and Trustee\, a San Francisco State University professor\, and author of multiple books including “Little Manila Is In the Heart: The Making of the Filipina/o American Community in Stockton\, California” (Duke University Press\, 2013).\n\nSponsors (Partial List)\nUniversity of Michigan (* = pending confirmation):\n•	UM Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies\n•	UM Department of American Culture\n•	UM Department of Women’s Studies*\n•	UM Filipino American Students Association Local Community Sponsors:\n•	FANHS Michigan Chapter\n•	Filipino Youth Initiative\n•	Paaralang Pilipino Language and Cultural School\n•	Philippine American Community Center of Michigan\n•	FILAMCCO National Sponsors:\n•	Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS)\n•	Carlos Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies at UC Davis\n•	Pin@y Educational Partnerships\n•	Little Manila Rising\n•	PapaLoDown Agency\n•	Bridge + Delta Publishing\n\nFor a Media Kit\, see: http://tinyurl.com/MediaKitJFJ\nFor a Curriculum Guide\, Book Orders and additional information visit www.bridgedelta.com For Event Questions\, Email: FANHS.VP@gmail.com\n\nwww.fanhs-national.org www.paccm.org\n\n#JourneyForJustice	#LarryItliong#DawnMabalonIsInTheHeart

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Lying and Deception in Games
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nThis article proposes definitions of lying\, deception\, and damage in strategic settings. Lying depends on the existence of accepted meanings for messages\, but does not require a model of how the audience responds to messages. Deception does require a model of how the audience interprets messages\, but does not directly refer to consequences. Damage requires consideration of the consequences of messages. Lies need not be deceptive. Deception does not require lying. Lying and deception are compatible with equilibrium. I give conditions under which deception must be damaging.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Film Classics
DESCRIPTION:Why do some films seem so much better than others and maintain a reputation for what seems forever? Why do these films have an impact on the development of the cinema while others drop quickly into oblivion? In other words\, why are some films “classics” and what do we mean by the term “classic” to begin with? \nLet’s take a look at the following film classics and respond to those questions: Grand illusion (France\, 1937)\; The African Queen (USA\, 1951)\; Touch of Evil (USA\, 1958)\; Late Spring (Japan\, 1949)\; Chinatown (USA\, 1974)\; and Groundhog Day (USA\, 1993). Ira Konigsberg\, instructor\, is Professor Emeritus of Film at the University of Michigan. This Study Group is for those 50 and over and meets Mondays and Wednesdays\, 1:00-4:00 pm on October 7\, October 14\, October 21\, October 30\, November 4 and November 11.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The University of Michigan Initiative on Disability Studies (UMInDS) welcomes:
DESCRIPTION:Starting from the two activist campsites set up in Seoul\, one by the coalition of disability organizations and the other by the Supporters for the Health and Rights of People in the Semiconductor Industry\, Kim explores a history of occupational health movements and their intersections with disability rights movements in South Korea. Against the bureaucratic technology of rating the degree of disability and harm\, necro-activism emerges in the form of persistent involvements of dead bodies\, mourning\, and other-than-human presence\, making claims for justice as an ongoing practice of everyday life and afterlife.\n\nPronouns: She/Her\n\nEunjung Kim is Associate Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Disability Studies at Syracuse University. Her book\, *Curative Violence: Rehabilitating Disability\, Gender and Sexuality in Modern Korea* (Duke University Press) received Alison Piepmeier Award from the National Women's Studies Association and the James B. Palais Book Prize from the Association for Asian Studies.\n\nAccessibility for Angell Hall: Accessible entrance through adjacent buildings\, or the North-West corner ground-floor entrance of Angell Hall. From the North-West entrance\, the elevators are down the hall on the left and right sides. The event is on the third floor in room 3222. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS Colloquium Series. Libraries and Mobilities
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 CMENAS Colloquium Series theme is \"Migration in the Islamicate World.\" \n \nWe make many assumptions about libraries such as they are fixed spaces\, fairly secure and often large buildings. There are private libraries that are smaller and could simply occupy a single floor or room. But a definite space comes to mind\, not immediately mobility of the books between at least two places. However we think of these spaces we seldom figure mobility or movement into our thinking about libraries\, archives or collections. Perhaps with the recent rise of online book shopping we might begin to rethink things and reflect on how books travel (from depository to buyer\, at least). But books have always travelled. All forms of “shipping” have been used to carry them long before the modern courier companies. Yet the circulation of the material book is not a subject of much thinking or research it would seem. And with the transport books\, they also disappear\, parts or volumes go missing\, they find new homes\, and they might reappear in surprising places. Sometimes the transfer is simply an act of theft or a by-product of conquest. In this talk I look at episodes in the book history of Northwest Africa that points to a long tradition of book buying and selling and lending over vast spaces. Nomadism is part of the fabric of this region and this included scholars and books. \n \nShamil Jeppie is Associate Professor in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Cape Town. He is the founder of the Tombouctou Manuscripts Project and was previously director of the Institute for Humanities in Africa (Huma) both at the University of Cape Town. He has published on various aspects of the history of Timbuktu\, and on South African history. \n\nThe following text will be included on all II events unless you indicate otherwise:If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Cognitive Science Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Morrow\, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry\, will present \"Measurement of Individual Differences in Cue-Motivated Behavior\" at this week's Cognitive Science Seminar Series. \n\nABSTRACT\n\nSign-tracking is a form of Pavlovian conditioned approach to reward-associated cues. Sign-tracking is often contrasted with goal-tracking\, which is cue-triggered approach directed toward the location of reward delivery. Interest in sign-tracking has increased in recent years because individual variation in sign-tracking has been shown to predict addiction-like behaviors in animals. Though sign-tracking has been observed in a wide variety of species\, including rodents\, primates\, fish\, cephalopods\, and insects\, there have been very few attempts to document sign-tracking in humans. We directly translated a rat task for human subjects\, using a retractable lever as a conditioned stimulus that predicts reward delivery into a different physical location (reward magazine). Physical contacts as well as eye-gaze directed toward the lever or magazine were recorded as outcome measures. Subjects also completed questionnaire-based measurements of trait impulsivity. We hope to demonstrate that sign- and goal-tracking behavior can be measured in humans. Furthermore\, we will test whether inter-individual variation in sign- and goal-tracking behavior correlates with motor impulsivity\, which is a known risk factor for addiction.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Seminar: Jean-luc Doumont\, Founding Partner\, Principiae
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to all graduate (masters and PhD) students\, faculty\, staff\, lecturers and affiliates.\n\nTitle:\nMaking the Most of your Presentation\n\nAbstract:\nStrong presentation skills are a key to success for engineers\, scientists\, and others\, yet many speakers are at a loss to tackle the task. Systematic as they otherwise can be in their work\, they go at it intuitively or haphazardly\, with much good will but seldom good results. In this talk\, Dr. Doumont proposes a systematic way to prepare and deliver an oral presentation: he covers structure\, slides\, and delivery\, as well as stage fright.\n\nBio:\nAn engineer from the Louvain School of Engineering and PhD in applied physics from Stanford University\, Jean-luc Doumont now devotes his time and energy to training engineers\, scientists\, business people\, and other rational minds in effective communication\, pedagogy\, statistical thinking\, and related themes. With his rational background\, he approaches communication in an original\, engineering- like way that contrasts sharply with the tradition of the field\, rooted in the humanities. He is thus well received by students and professionals in search of a method they can apply with the same rigor they have come to value in every other aspect of their occupations. Articulate\, entertaining\, and thought-provoking\, he is a popular invited speaker worldwide\, in particular at international scientific conferences\, research laboratories\, and top-ranked universities. He is happy to deliver his lectures in English\, Spanish\, French\, or Dutch.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Exploring QCD with Jet Substructure at the LHC
DESCRIPTION:The inner structure of jets is sensitive to QCD across a wide range of scales\, from the perturbative parton shower down to non-perturbative hadronization effects. This information has been used in many searches for distinguishing between different types of jets\, but it has been challenging to produce theoretical predictions for these substructure observables due to the presence of non-global logarithms. Recent advances in jet grooming algorithms have made it possible to produce calculations beyond leading logarithmic accuracy for jet substructure observables for the first time at a hadron collider. I will discuss the measurement of the Soft Drop jet mass using data from the ATLAS experiment\, which was the first measurement of a substructure observable which could be compared to theoretical predictions beyond leading logarithmic accuracy. I will then discuss the implications of this work\, including the possibilities for Monte Carlo tuning as well as measurements of Standard Model parameters.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Mechanics of earthquakes: extreme location\, frictional instability\, and fluid effects
DESCRIPTION:Many seismological studies interpret earthquake sources as shear cracks and use concepts of fracture mechanics to shed light on earthquake source processes. This approach is partially justified by extreme localization of shear deformation on mature faults in the earth’s crust\, with kilometers of relative plate motion sometimes accommodated by millimeter-wide shear layers filled with micrometer-sized rock particles. The presentation will discuss recent progress in using laboratory-derived shear resistance laws in the presence of pore fluids for numerical elastodynamic simulations of earthquake source processes and the associated insights\, including similarities and differences with the traditional fracture mechanics interpretations

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:RNA Innovation Seminar\, Keith Slotkin\, Donald Danforth Plant Science Center\, University of Missouri Columbia
DESCRIPTION:Keith Slotkin\, Member and PI\, Donald Danforth Plant Science Center\,  Associate Professor\, Division of Biological Sciences\, University of Missouri Columbia\n\nAbstract: The field of epigenetic silencing is replete with labs studying how transcriptional silencing is epigenetically maintained\, or in some cases re-targeted\, across cell divisions and generations. On the other hand\, the initiation of that silencing in the first place\, especially for DNA that is “new” to the genome\, is not well understood. Although the propagation of epigenetic silencing is based on the chromatin level\, our data in the powerful model plant Arabidopsis demonstrates that de novo initiation of transposable element and transgene silencing is based on RNA\, and utilizes a host of small RNA classes that function specifically in the initiation of silencing to guide the first round of DNA methylation. I plan to present my ongoing work on the molecular mechanisms of silencing initiation\, focusing on the key RNA-dependent processes necessary to initiate epigenetic silencing.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Second Betty Ch'maj Distinguished American Studies Lecture: \"Beyond the Decolonial Turn: The Imaginary as Will to Feel\"
DESCRIPTION:As a deconstructive tool\, does the decolonial necessarily expose colonial powers\, structures\, laws\, and institutions? What are the flaws of a decolonial theory that regards a materialist perspective while occluding the spirit of the mind and body? It is as if the method and the theory exist in parallel universes\, never to touch or entice each other but instead battle in a false binary. And yet\, we cannot have theory without method\; we cannot have a materialist\, grounded “real” critique without the affective body\, without the people who feel\, who touch\, who experience and imagine other ways of being. The imagination\, after all\, is the door to creativity\, to other ways of being and knowing. Overall\, the real without the imaginary lacks vision and affirms a two- dimensional\, uninspired ontology and epistemology. I’m posing the “will to feel” as a mode that reasserts the imaginary within the decolonial. Ultimately\, can the “will to feel” transform us and the toxic world we inhabit in the 21st century? \n\nThere will be a light reception following the lecture.\n\nDr. Emma Pérez earned a PhD in history from the University of California\, Los Angeles. In 2017\, she joined the University of Arizona as a Research Social Scientist at the Southwest Center and a Professor in the Department of Gender/Women’s Studies. Pérez has published fiction\, essays and the history monograph\, The Decolonial Imaginary: Writing Chicanas into History (1999). Her novels include\, Gulf Dreams (1996)\; Forgetting the Alamo\, Or\, Blood Memory (2009)\, which earned the Isherwood Writing Grant (2009) and 2nd place in Historical Fiction from International Latino Books (2010). Her most recent novel\, Electra’s Complex (2016) is a mystery set in an east coast college. She continues to research and write about LGBT Chicanx/Latinx through a queer of color lens.\n\nATTN: There will also be a private brunch with Emma Pérez for Graduate Students. RSVP required: https://forms.gle/5fNfoMHzPhEFzUH98\n\nAbout the Betty Ch’maj Lecture: With generous support from the Ch’maj family\, the Annual Betty Ch’maj Distinguished American Studies Lecture Series was established to honor the legacy of Betty Ch’maj. Ch'maj\, who was awarded the very first Ph.D. in American Culture in 1961 at Michigan\, continued her career researching American literature and music\, founding the Radical Caucus of ASA\, and working to challenge systematic gender discrimination in American Studies programs.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Space and Flows in Roman Literature: Towards a Heuristics of Living under Empire
DESCRIPTION:Description: Recent archaeological work on globalization in the Roman era has demonstrated how Mediterranean communities\, or localities\, grow increasingly interconnected and interdependent as network activity accelerates with the circulation of goods\, peoples\, and cultural practices. Empire’s territorial expansion during the Roman Imperial era (1st – 2nd centuries CE) facilitated such movement(s)\, but also had a deep impact on various authors of that era\, like Tacitus\, Martial\, and Juvenal\, who frame their narratives of empire and political and cultural change in comparable materialist terms. This talk explores how notions of globalization\, network activity\, movement\, mapping\, and the theoretical concept of the rhizome constitute a cognitive toolkit from which to assess and reconcile the literary reflections of space (territorial\, cultural) and flows (of people and ideas) expressed by these same authors.\n\nBio: Osman Umurhan is Associate Professor of Classics at the University of New Mexico (PhD Classics\, New York University\, 2008). Umurhan’s research interests and areas of publication include Roman verse satire\, globalization\, mobility\, empire\, and musical\, cinematic\, and mathematical receptions of antiquity. Following the 2018 publication of his monograph Juvenal’s Global Awareness: Circulation\, Connectivity\, and Empire\, his forthcoming co-edited volume Classical Antiquity in Heavy Metal Music is due out in early October. His current project explores applications of the spatial turn and the social sciences on Roman formulations of space and place and across Roman literary genres.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STS Speaker. Change Over Time? Fracture and Reconciliation in Natural Science Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Scientists in the natural histories create the frameworks\, calendars and infrastructures that allow us to understand and grapple with \"deep time\" -- but they do so within their own temporally complex scholarly settings: they draw on classification systems that are constantly facing revision and methodological revolution\; database systems that simultaneously face forced obsolescence and true decay\; and data collections in need of maintenance and migration. In this talk\, I consider the rhythms of fracture and reconciliation in the data infrastructure in the natural sciences. This talk draws on Thomer's on-going work with the “Transforming Taxonomic Interfaces” and “Migrating Research Data Collections” projects.\n\nBio: Andrea Thomer is an assistant professor of information at the University of Michigan School of Information. She conducts research in the areas of data curation\, museum informatics\, earth science and biodiversity informatics\, information organization\, and computer supported cooperative work. She is especially interested in how people use and create data and metadata\; the impact of information organization on information use\; issues of data provenance\, reproducibility\, and integration\; and long-term data curation and infrastructure sustainability. She is studying a number of these issues through the \"Migrating Research Data Collections\" project - a recently awarded Laura Bush 21st Century Librarianship Early Career Research Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Dr. Thomer received her doctorate in Library and Information Science from the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign in 2017.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 813 Seminar: Emily Mower Provost\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Engineering approaches to human behavior analysis are complicated by the lack of a one-to-one mapping between the behavioral cues that an individual generates and how an external observer interprets those cues. This many-to-many mapping injects noise into both the data and ground truth. As a result\, many of the models and assumptions used in traditional machine learning and signal processing must be used with caveats or adapted to meet the needs of this domain. I will discuss our work on algorithmic approaches to characterize and predict how humans perceive signals that modulate spoken communication\, focusing on emotion and mood. I will highlight our efforts in tracking mood for individuals with bipolar disorder. These technologies have the potential to forward diagnosis and treatment by providing constrained\, repeatable\, and easily modifiable assessment protocols\, objective measures\, and interaction scenarios.\n\nEmily Mower Provost is an Associate Professor in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC)\, Los Angeles\, CA in 2010. She is a member of Tau-Beta-Pi\, Eta-Kappa-Nu\, and a member of IEEE and ISCA. She has been awarded a National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2017)\, a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (2004-2007)\, the Herbert Kunzel Engineering Fellowship from USC (2007-2008\, 2010-2011)\, the Intel Research Fellowship (2008-2010)\, the Achievement Rewards For College Scientists (ARCS) Award (2009 – 2010)\, and the Oscar Stern Award for Depression Research (2015).
