SUMMARY:Exhibition:Civitates Orbis Terrarum: Braun & Hogenberg’s Evolving World
DESCRIPTION:Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cities of the World)\, the first standardized city atlas\, contains over 540 maps and views between its six volumes. First published in 1572 by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590)\, Civitates was first intended as a companion to Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. New editions of the city atlas continued to be printed through 1617. Hogenberg\, one of the most prolific engravers of the time\, was joined by many other engravers in creating the Civitates. Braun edited the work and provided the descriptions of the cities on the verso of each plate. This exhibit contains 18 works from the Civitates\, including many from the Clark Library’s holdings. Also included are reproductions of large panoramas Amsterdam\, London\, and St. Petersburg that reflect the evolution of city mapping through the 17th and 18th centuries.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Football & Pets: Paper Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit of Steve Wirtz’ sculptures features a selection of his Dynamic Football series and animal works. The Dynamic Football laminated paper works explore compositions of action\, allowing the artist to exploit the properties of the medium. The pieces are constructed by gluing many layers of paper over wire armatures. When dry\, the sculptures are painted in an often splashy\, sketchy style. Wirtz’ silly animal works are what the artist is best known for\, and they take shape in his Goetzville\, Michigan studio.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Oil on Water: Painting on Linen
DESCRIPTION:Danielle Eubank is an award-winning artist who has been on four international sailing expeditions and painted every ocean on the planet to raise awareness about the oceans and climate change. Her large paintings are emotive abstract portraits of specific bodies of water. The Oil on Water exhibition features Eubank’s oil on linen paintings of the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. She creates patterns within patterns\, representing vertical stacks of rhythms. The undulating forms\, such as water ripples\, oil slicks\, and refuse\, combined with the memories that water evokes\, makes her work eye-opening\, yet soothing and sensual. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Lobby\, Floor 1 \n1500 E. In Pen & Ink Queens\, Cavanagh draws inspiration from medieval and renaissance-era garments to adorn quirky\, queenly figures. Cavanagh works in a style that is hyper-detailed and intricate\, so she remains present during the creative process. A true Michigander\, Cavanagh was born and raised in Southeast Michigan\, attended U-M\, and currently works in Detroit. Cavanagh makes a concerted effort to exhibit as much as possible in her home state\, and when she is not in her studio\, you can find her cooking\, practicing yoga or playing with her cat\, Benji.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ваза: Copper & Brass Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Victoria (Vika) Bulgakova grew up in Ukraine\, a part of the former Soviet Union. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1994\, and for the next 22 years\, New York became her home. In 2016\, she moved to Michigan to pursue an MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She found the raw beauty of Detroit inspiring and kept her metalsmithing studio practice in the city. The copper and brass vessels in her Ваза series and other included works are a meditation on fluidity of memories: their ability to shift from reflection to re-invention over time. Each vessel potentially holds something within its boundaries\, whether tangible or not. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Graffiti as Devotion along the Nile: El-Kurru\, Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Ancient graffiti provide a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals in antiquity. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered in a rock-cut temple by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.\n\nCurators: Geoff Emberling and Suzanne Davis\n\nView the online exhibition:\nhttp://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/graffiti-el-kurru/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Other Crusoes\, Other Islands: Mapping a Complex Legacy
DESCRIPTION:On the 300th anniversary of the publication of The Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe\, of York\, Mariner\, this exhibit interrogates the troubled legacy of Daniel Defoe’s seminal English novel. It also explores how creators have pushed back against the colonialist\, hyper-masculine\, and racist ethos of the text by using the castaway narrative to explore self-sufficiency\, otherness\, and the role of gendered and racialized ideas in constructing the self.\n\nThis novel of shipwreck\, survival\, and rescue has become a cultural touchstone. Today\, many people who haven’t read the novel still feel familiar with key plot elements\, Robinson Crusoe\, and Friday. Yet\, there is less familiarity with how both the original text and many of the adaptations of Robinson Crusoe have fed into and reinforced narratives of imperialism and racism. Drawing on the Hubbard Collection of Imaginary Voyages - one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of editions\, translations\, adaptations\, and spin-offs of Robinson Crusoe - Other Crusoes\, Other Islands seeks to understand how readers and writers have engaged with the story since its initial publication in 1719.\n\nContent Advisory: Please be aware that some items in this exhibit feature racist imagery and potentially painful content. Although Robinson Crusoe is often treated as children’s literature and this exhibit includes children’s books and board games\, it is not an exhibit geared towards children and reflects the significant shifts over time in ideas about what is appropriate for children.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibition: Blood Underwater
DESCRIPTION:Water\, as a natural resource\, has been weaponized or made treacherous against people seeking safety and security. Some have been tortured or killed through waterboarding\, others have been forced into oceans to die or disappear. Refugees across world regions have drowned crossing bodies of water in hopes for a better life. \n\nMillions of people all over the world are being tortured\, disappeared\, and forcibly displaced by repressive regimes and wars while governments of other countries are denying them a safe place to live. There are now as many as 1.3 million survivors of politically motivated torture survivors living in the U.S. And over 70 million refugees in the world according to the United Nations Refugee Agency\, the highest number in the almost 70 years since the refugee agency was founded.\n\nDuring this time of rapid political change worldwide\, the Blood Underwater Workshop and Exhibition offers an opportunity for students\, activists\, members of civil society organizations\, and NGOs to come together as change agents to protect human rights\, freedom and dignity\, and to spread peace\, justice and love.\n\nBlood Underwater is a collaborative work\, which encourages deep thinking and creative expression. It provides a voice for community members and activists\, especially from political\, national\, racial\, religious and other minorities\, to express their concerns about global suffering through art. Participants gather around a large canvas with paints and music and are guided through a series of artistic expressions by “artivist” Elshafei Dafalla. The purpose is to use art to protest against violence\, torture\, enforced disappearances and other forms of brutality.\n\nBlood Underwater is a demand for “freedom\, peace and justice” -- from San Salvador to Khartoum to Sindh -- and throughout the world. This visual narrative will recognize men and women who have been murdered because they wanted to live in freedom\, political prisoners\, people forced from their homes\, and those who have been tortured for standing up to dictatorships.\n\nThe Blood Underwater artwork narrative will connect participants to one another\, and to refugees\, asylum seekers\, political prisoners and others who have already died or are currently suffering in their own countries or in new lands. This collaboration and new knowledge will enable participants to reflect together about global suffering\, and what can be done about it.\n\n-------\nEishafei Dafalla received a Bachelor of Arts in Sculpture from the College of Fine and Applied Art at the University for Science and Technology in Khartoum\, Sudan as well as a Diploma in Folklore from the Afro-Asian Institute at the University of Khartoum. He earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Stamps School of Art and Design at University of Michigan. Dafalla has participated in more than fifty exhibits worldwide\, and his work is part of public and private collections in Africa\, Asia\, the Middle East\, Europe and the United States. He continues to lecture and to exhibit his work\, holding artist residencies\, participating in community building activities\, and creating performative installation events around the U.S. and internationally. An extended interview with Dafalla was created by the Washington DC-based\, nonprofit\, Center for Concern. \n\nThe exhibition will be on display November 4-22\, M-F\, 10am-5pm\, at the Residential College Art Gallery at 701 East University Ave.\, Ann Arbor MI 48109. Free and open to the public. \n\nThere will be an opening reception for Blood Underwater with Elshafei Dafalla in attendance on November 1 from 6-8pm\, and refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Literature in Fragments: Lost Greek Works at Michigan
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit presents a selection of such fragmentary literary texts from the University of Michigan’s Papyrology Collection. Although literary papyri represent a small fraction of surviving papyrus texts\, they nonetheless enable scholars both to improve their readings of known literary texts and to illuminate the rich diversity of ancient Greek literature\, the overwhelming majority of which has been lost to time.\n\nThe Greek literature that survives complete in the present day largely represents the texts that were the most popular in antiquity\, works like Homer’s Iliad and Euripides’ Medea. These texts were repeatedly copied throughout antiquity and the Middle Ages\, ensuring their continued transmission. Literary texts on papyri\, however\, provide a rare opportunity to glimpse fragments of ancient literature in their original form and to discover works that were read in antiquity but did not otherwise survive into the medieval and modern periods. This includes lesser-known works by such famous authors as Aristophanes and the Greek tragedians\, as well as fragments of texts whose authors remain unknown.\n\nThe exhibit was curated by Allison Thorsen\, UMSI student\, and can be viewed during regular hours of the Special Collections Research Center:\nhttps://www.lib.umich.edu/special-collections-research-center

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nature a Moment: Visions of the World from Three Korean-American Artists
DESCRIPTION:Three Chicago-area Korean-American artists render deeply personal interpretations of the natural world in the exhibit “Nature a Moment” at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Using woodcut\, painting on canvas\, and mixed media\, Linda Hyong\, Sung Eun Hong\, and Seong Ok Lee explore the world of flowers\, gardens\, and nature in vivid works that slow time to a fleeting present moment.\n\nLinda Hyong is a University of Michigan alumna and former teaching assistant in the U-M Stamps School of Art & Design. She draws her inspiration from Claude Monet’s water lily garden in France to create her own modern interpretation of impressionism. Seong Ok Lee is inspired by flowers\, which she believes are the most beautiful forms in nature. In her dream-like\, nearly abstract paintings\, Sung Eun Hong communicates her vision of what she calls “pure dreams and fantasy.”\n\nExhibit runs September 14 through November 15\, 2019 at the\n\nUniversity of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, 1800 N. Dixboro Rd.\, Ann Arbor. Free.

This becomes acutely important in the face of climate change\; while new\, more sustainable materials are an important step\, material optimization strategies are just as important\, and these techniques rely almost exclusively on digital fabrication and robotic manufacturing and construction technologies. In this talk I will discuss the challenges and opportunities that face the use of robotics in the design and construction industry. We will discuss a range of existing and emerging design to fabrication workflows\, as well as several case studies which demonstrate how the use of industrial robots as a prototyping platform opens the door to new modes of construction. \n\nWesley McGee is an Associate Professor of Architecture and Director of the FABLab at the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color  to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support of this exhibition:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics:
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 60s and 70s\, artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. During these decades\, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. Their new formal and intellectual strategies—seen here across large-scale and miniature work—dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s in a politically shifting American landscape.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice
DESCRIPTION:In September 2019\, the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design will host the New Media Caucus 2019 Symposium and Exhibition\, Border Control.  Symposium and exhibition events will take place in Ann Arbor at the Stamps School of Art and Design (2000 Bonisteel Blvd.) and Stamps Gallery (201 S. Division St.).\n\nExhibition Dates: September 20 - November 10\, 2019\nSymposium Dates: September 19 - 22\, 2019\nGuest Curator: Allison Collins\, Media Arts Curator\, Western Front\n\nCurated by Allison Collins in collaboration with Carrie Edinger and Srimoyee Mitra.\nIn partnership with the New Media Caucus \n\nHuman migration is a defining issue of the 21st century\, often calling into question the relevance\, role\, and responsibilities of national borders across the globe. As individuals seek refuge from geopolitical and environmental forces\, we become an increasingly globalized community. Demarcations of all types are simultaneously porous and closed\, defensive and receptive\, and seen in almost every facet of our existence. Border Control responds to these conditions with an open-ended question\, asking: “How has humanity made sense of the world in relation to borders and boundaries\, both physically and psychologically?” While positioned within (or outside of) defined spaces and identities\, human refusal of such literal definitions is paramount. Even while lines drawn have important consequences for lived reality\, the winds\, currents\, and natural energies of the Earth deny enclosures and definitions that politics and maps might suggest.\n\nDrawn from practices that are touched or driven by new media\, Border Control assembles works by artists who consider geographical contexts\, patterns of migration\, displacement\, and statelessness. Collectively\, they offer projects with subterfuge\, refusal\, and reconsideration of imposed state-sanctioned boundaries.\n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Copies and Invention in East Asia
DESCRIPTION:Far from being frowned upon as uncreative\, in China\, Korea\, and Japan\, copying has long been considered a valuable practice. Through works of art spanning ancient to contemporary times\, Copies and Invention in East Asia challenges our understanding of originality\, and presents copying as an act of imaginative interpretation. The exhibition includes burial goods that conjure a world for the deceased\; Buddhist sculptures produced in multiples to amplify religious experience and meaning\; paintings in which a master’s brushstrokes are faithfully duplicated as a way of shaping the self\; and contemporary works that address multiplicity and duplication in the modern world.\n\nLead support is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, Center for Japanese Studies\, Nam Center for Korean Studies\, School of Information\, and College of Engineering. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Fabrication Studio at the Duderstadt Center\, the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures\, and SeeMeCNC 3D Printers.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mari Katayama
DESCRIPTION:Japanese artist Mari Katayama (born 1987) features her own body in a provocative series of works combining photography\, sculpture\, and textile. Born with a developmental condition\, the artist had both her legs amputated at the age of nine and has worn prosthetics ever since. In order to fill a deep gap between her own understanding of self and physicality\, and contemporary society’s simplistic categorizations\, Katayama began to explore her identity by objectifying her body in her art. In photographs she assumes different personas\, dressed in revealing lingerie in private\, domestic spaces or in dramatic waterscapes. The unflinching display of the vulnerabilities and limits of Katayama’s body opens up a broader conversation about anxieties and wounds for all of us—disabled or nondisabled—living in an age obsessed with body image. UMMA’s installation will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in the U.S.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Center for Japanese Studies\, the Japan Business Society of Detroit Foundation\, the Japan Cultural Development\, and Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, the University of Michigan CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund\, Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures\, and Women's Studies Department.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Walter Oltmann
DESCRIPTION:Infant Skull II\, a woven “tapestry” made out of very fine aluminum wire\, only reveals its shape when seen from afar. Drawing inspiration from his country’s basketry traditions\, the South African artist Walter Oltmann (b. 1960) alternates densely layered sections with open spaces\, allowing the underlying surface of the work to show through. The skull that emerges is\, in a South African context\, evocative of the Cradle of Humankind—a series of caves outside Johannesburg\, where some of the oldest hominin fossils in the world have been found.\n \nThe work complements UMMA’s renowned and growing collection of historical and contemporary African art and reminds us of the central role of Africa in the history of humankind. The purchase was made possible thanks to the generosity of UMMA Director's Acquisition Committee.\n\nThis acquisition was made possible by the generosity of the UMMA Director's Acquisition Committee\, 2016.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Take Your Pick: Collecting Found Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Come help build our collection of “ordinary” American 20th-century photographs.\n \nTake Your Pick invites you—the Museum’s visitors—to select photographs for our permanent collection. What belongs in a permanent collection\, and why? Who and what should be represented\, and how should we decide? This exhibition considers these questions in regard to 1\,000 amateur photographs on loan from the private collection of Peter J. Cohen\, who has gathered more than 60\,000 snapshots while exploring flea markets in the United States and Europe over two decades. The images he has collected depict all aspects of daily life and reveal the dynamic histories of amateur photography. Such pictures have particular significance in the current digital age\, when it is much less common to make physical copies of personal photographs. They constitute important artifacts of twentieth-century visual culture and precedents for the photographs we still make today. You are invited to make your voice heard in the selection process by voting for the photographs that resonate most with you!  \n \nVote for your favorite pictures: Saturday\, September 21\, 2019 – Sunday\, January 12\, 2020 Final selections on view: Tuesday\, January 14 – Sunday\, February 23\, 2020\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by Cecilia and Mark Vonderheide and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and Department of Film\, Television\, and Media.\n

SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Area Brown Bag: Are online survey participants motivated to provide high-quality data (and do they)?
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nResearchers want high-quality data from their participants. As long as many researchers across the social sciences have been collecting large amounts of data from online convenience samples like MTurk and Prolific\, some have expressed skepticism whether data from these sources are high-quality. Such skepticism stems in part from the fact that online survey compensation is often low (e.g.\, 10 cents per minute) and the fact that a concerning percentage of participants fail English language comprehension questions as well as attention checks. Despite plausible reasons to expect low-quality\, researchers have replicated online the psychometric properties of well-known personality and individual differences instruments (e.g.\, Big Five\, Adult Attachment) as well as classic experimental findings (e.g.\, framing and anchoring effects). Such findings suggest high-quality. But how? We wondered whether these data are of high quality in part because participants are simply motivated to thoughtfully and honestly respond to surveys for reasons other than money. Across four convenience samples\, we assessed data quality\, survey-taking motivation\, and self-reported engagement in surveys. I will present and discuss the results during my talk.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ph.D. Defense: Dakota Crisp
DESCRIPTION:Epilepsy is characterized by spontaneously recurring seizures that severely disrupt quality of life and pose risks of injury and death. It is a highly heterogenous disease\, with seizures seen in a wide range of other diseases (Alzheimer’s\, autism\, Down’s syndrome\, etc.). Yet to date\, there is no method of categorizing seizures that can help distinguish the link between pathology and seizures. The aim of this work is to validate and explore a method of categorizing seizures based on their fundamental dynamics to provide a framework for future research to better investigate the underlying mechanisms of seizures and therapeutic approaches to stop them.\n \nThe first study used predictions from a previously-published computational model to visually classify seizures using dynamical transition features in two large datasets (simulated and real human data). Machine learning was applied to raw signal features to verify the accuracy of the reviewer’s labels. It found that visual classification is consistent and supported by the signal feature analysis. We also investigate the model’s predictions in real human data\, finding that most dynamic classifications were observed and patients can have varying seizure dynamics over time. A major unpublished aspect of this work is that the human data analysis was crucial in the original development of the model.\n \nThe second study used data mining and machine learning in a long-term rat model of epileptogenesis to investigate the viability of these same dynamic principles as a biomarker of epileptic brain state. It also applied the same rigor to an analysis of the response to electrical stimulation. We found that evoked responses can be used to predict if an injured brain would eventually develop seizures or not. Once seizures began manifesting\, both evoked responses and seizure onset dynamics had strong correlation with the progression of epileptogenesis\, suggesting they are independent biomarkers.\n \nFor the final study\, we use the same principles of dynamics and machine learning to characterize differences between a low Mg2+ / high K+ mouse brain-slice seizure model with and without different anti-seizure drugs. It found that anti-seizure drugs can change the observed seizure dynamics\, and each drug has a different effect on brain dynamics.\n \nThese three studies provide evidence that seizures can be categorized by their fundamental dynamics. These dynamics can provide mechanistic insights into current brain state\, future brain states\, and the response to anti-epileptic drugs. The results presented in this dissertation can be used as a framework to further investigate seizure mechanisms and personalize patient treatment and research.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Pablo Zavattieri: Clever Architectures\, Interfaces and Competing Mechanisms in Biological Materials
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:Nature uses modest constituents to synthesize composite materials with exceptional mechanical properties for structural and impact resistance purposes. In most cases\, these materials achieved outstanding mechanical properties avoiding the typical trade-offs often attained by manmade materials. While these materials require modern microscopy techniques to characterize their complex hierarchical structures\, most of our learnings come from the way these materials mitigate catastrophic damage\, revealing the most important mechanisms and features of their inner structure that contribute to energy dissipation and toughening. Considering the current progress in material synthesis and manufacturing\, these new concepts have converged to the field of architected materials. In this talk\, I will describe some interesting mechanics problems that we encountered as we studied some extraordinary species\, and how we can translate these lessons learned to architected materials. In particular\, I will focus on a few examples related to how the combination of clever architectures\, interfaces\, material properties and competing mechanisms can promote delocalization to mitigate catastrophic failure\, hence\, improving toughness and impact resistance without sacrificing other important mechanical properties. Most of this discussion is driven by how we can eventually translate these lessons learned to the development and manufacturing of architected materials.\n\nBio: Dr. Pablo Zavattieri is a Professor of Civil Engineering and University Faculty Scholar at Purdue University. Zavattieri received his BS/MS degrees in Nuclear Engineering from the Balseiro Institute (Argentina) and PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering from Purdue University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Although central architectures drive robust oscillations\, biological clock networks containing the same core vary drastically in their potential to oscillate. What peripheral structures contribute to the variation of oscillation behaviors remains elusive. We computationally generated an atlas of oscillators and found that\, while certain core topologies are essential for robust oscillations\, local structures substantially modulate the degree of robustness. Strikingly\, two key local structures\, incoherent inputs and coherent inputs\, can modify a core topology to promote and attenuate its robustness\, additively. These findings underscore the importance of local modifications besides robust cores\, which explain why auxiliary structures not required for oscillation are evolutionarily conserved. We further apply this computational framework to search for structures underlying tunability\, another crucial property shared by many biological timing systems to adapt their frequencies to environmental changes.\n\nExperimentally\, we developed an artificial cell system to reconstitute mitotic oscillatory processes in water-in-oil microemulsions. With a multi-inlet pressure-driven microfluidic setup\, these artificial cells are flexibly adjustable in sizes\, periods\, various molecular and drug concentrations\, energy\, and subcellular compartments. Using long-term time-lapse fluorescence microscopy\, this system enables high-throughput\, single-cell analysis of clock dynamics\, functions\, and stochasticity\, key to elucidating the topology-function relation of biological clocks.\n\nWe also investigate how multiple clocks coordinate via biochemical and mechanical signals in the essential developmental processes of early zebrafish embryos (e.g.\, mitotic wave propagation\, synchronous embryo cleavages\, and somitogenesis). To pin down the physical mechanisms that give rise to these complex collective phenomena\, we integrate mathematical modeling\, live embryo and explant imaging\, nanofabrication\, micro-contact printing\, and systems and synthetic biology approaches.\n\nBlueJeans livestream: https://primetime.bluejeans.com/a2m/live-event/rbuvycdc\nQiong Yang: https://medicine.umich.edu/dept/dcmb/qiong-yang-phd\n\n3:45 pm to 4:00 pm - Light refreshments\n4:00 pm - Lecture

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Donia Human Rights Center Distinguished Lecture. Global Challenges to Human Rights Today
DESCRIPTION:From refugee crises and global poverty to rigged elections\, growing populism – and the intolerance and oppression it breeds\, we are at a pivotal moment in the fight for human rights. Throughout his years of service as a career diplomat and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights\, Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein has been a champion for the protection of fundamental human rights. His work has involved the security of equality\, justice\, and respect – and has directly influenced international justice\, United Nations peacekeeping\, and women’s development. In this speech\, Zeid discusses his concerns about the threats to global stability posed by such forces as racism\, xenophobia\, nationalism and authoritarian leaders\, and poses that the safety of humanity will be secured only through vision\, energy and generosity of spirit. According to Zeid\, “Silence does not earn you any respect — none\,” and only through civic activism can we ensure equality and justice. \n\nPrince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein of Jordan is the former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Known for his outspoken criticism of the fascism\, religious radicalism\, and threats to civil liberties growing in countries around the world\, Zeid was a powerful advocate for human rights and open societies. Zeid was the sixth High Commissioner for Human Rights\, serving from 2014 to 2018. He was the first Arab and Muslim to hold the post. In his speaking engagements\, Zeid draws from his career in diplomacy and as the Human Rights Chief to address the geopolitical climate\, relations in the middle east\, and the current challenges to human rights. At the U.N.\, he called upon powerful and small states alike to secure human rights in their own countries and internationally\, drawing notable attention to atrocities committed in Syria\, Venezuela\, Nicaragua\, by ISIS\, to the treatment of migrants and refugees in Libya\, and the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar. His principled approach to his role became most evident when he announced that he wouldn’t seek a second term due to the trying task of dealing with governments and the limited power of the U.N. security council. In his final U.N. address\, Zeid shared his concern about the threat to global stability posed by increasing nationalism\, and warned world powers against undermining civil liberties. A veteran multilateral diplomat\, Zeid was Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the U.N. from 2000 to 2007 and again from 2010 to 2014. From 2007 to 2010 he was Jordan’s Ambassador to the U.S. He also served as Jordan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the U.N. with the rank of Ambassador from 1996-2000. An expert in the field of international justice\, Zeid was a central figure in the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC)\, chairing the complex negotiations to establish the exact terms of genocide\, crimes against humanity\, and war crimes. He was subsequently elected the first President of the governing body of the ICC in 2002\, and grew it into the internationally recognized court that it is today. Zeid has been active on many legal issues\, including international law\, post-conflict peace-building\, international development\, counter-nuclear terrorism\, and women’s development. Following allegations of widespread abuse being committed by U.N. peacekeepers\, Zeid was appointed by Kofi Annan as Advisor to the Secretary-General on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Toward An Alternative Hispanism: Translation and the Worlding of Hispanofilipino Literature
DESCRIPTION:The Philippines is an underrepresented area in the study of Global Hispanism. Despite the awareness about the links between this Southeast Asian archipelago and regions readily identified as Hispanic\, attempts to ‘world’ Filipino Hispanism are sparse\, if not invisible. What happens instead is a reiteration of a historical narrative that presents Spain as a backward imperial power in opposition to the liberating colonial project of the US\, which ruled the archipelago from 1898. This plays out in Hispanofilipino literature. This presentation will reflect on the question of worlding in Hispanofilipino literature and will examine translation as an alternative tool for engaging with the allures and discontents of a literature produced under the colonial condition and circulated in an intensely multilingual space.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Democracy Inaction: Why our elections are unfair
DESCRIPTION:Public Lecture\nAmerican presidential primaries are examples of multicandidate elections in which plurality usually determines the winner. Is this the \"best\" way to decide who wins? While plurality is a common procedure\, it has serious flaws. Are there alternative procedures that are in some sense more \"fair?\" How do we determine the \"fairness\" of an election procedure? With no more mathematics than arithmetic (to count votes)\, we will examine some alternate procedures and fairness criteria.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Liberty in North Korea l Creating LiNKs: Humanity Behind Another World
DESCRIPTION:*****This event is FREE! *******\nWe want diverse perspectives to be available to all ♥ \n\nLiberty in North Korea at the University of Michigan is excited to invite two North Korean advocacy fellows from the LiNK HQ\, Jeongyol Ri and Ilhyeok Kim\, come to campus on November 6th\, 2019! \n\nJoin us as they reflect on their first-hand experiences as North Korean escapees\, and their adjustment after relocation. \n\n━━\nJeongyol Ri was born in 1998\, and spent his childhood in Pyongsong. Math was his most notable passion— by the time he was in elementary school\, he had already in mastered a middle school math curriculum. He later went on to represent the the North Korean team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Over the course of four competitions\, he had obtained a four silver medals. His success led the North Korean government to offer him a job\, but he did not want to work for the regime. The Hong Kong IMO was Jeongyol’s last chance to defect while abroad\; he was only 18 years old. While the rest of his team was packing for the return home\, he snuck out and sought asylum at the South Korean consulate. In 2016 Jeongyol resettled in South Korea and in 2019 started Seoul National University. \n\nIlhyeok Kim was born in 1995 in Saetbyeol when the famine had just begun. As a result of the famine\, his father became a broker who helped defectors in South Korea send money to relatives still in North Korea. When Ilhyeok was 12\, his father was caught and imprisoned\, but was eventually released for owning a Chinese cell phone. From that day onward\, the government kept a close eye on his family. Despite the repercussions they would face if they escaped\, they bravely decided to flee. In 2011 they arrived in South Korea. Ilhyeok aspires to work for the United Nations one day.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:In a Distracted World\, Solitude is Practice for Tomorrow’s Leaders
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Leadership Collaborative (MLC) Speaker Event: In a Distracted World\, Solitude is Practice for Tomorrow’s Leaders\nwith Mike Erwin\n\nIntroduction by Saddi Washington\, U-M Basketball Assistant Coach\n\nThe volume of our communication\, and our unfettered access to information and other people\, have made it more difficult than ever to focus. Despite this reality\, there is another truth: Opportunities to focus are still all around us. But we must recognize them and believe that the benefit of focus\, for yourself and the people you lead\, is worth making it a priority in your life. In other words\, before you can lead others\, the first person you must lead is yourself.\n\nMIKE ERWIN was born and raised in Syracuse\, NY. He has dedicated his life to serving the nation---and empowering people to build positive relationships. \n\nA 2002 graduate of The U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics\, Mike was commissioned as an Intelligence Officer\, deploying three times between 2004 and 2009. Following his third deployment\, Mike attended the University of Michigan from 2009-2011\, where he studied positive psychology and leadership under the tutelage of Drs. Chris Peterson and Nansook Park. He went on to serve as an Assistant Professor in Psychology & Leadership at West Point from 2011-2014. \n\nWhile in graduate school in 2010\, Mike founded a non-profit organization named Team Red\, White & Blue (Team RWB). Team RWB’s mission is to enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their communities through physical and social activity. \n\nMike is the co-author of LEAD YOURSELF FIRST by Bloomsbury Press (2017). The book focuses on how solitude strengthens people’s ability to lead with clarity\, balance and conviction. The book profiles leaders including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr\, Winston Churchill and Jane Goodall\, and how they used solitude in some of their most pivotal moments.\n\nCurrently\, Mike is leading another non-profit organization that he co-founded in 2015: The Positivity Project. Its mission is to empower America’s youth to build positive relationships through a deeper understanding of positive psychology’s 24 character strengths. Currently partnered with over 625 schools in 24 different states\, The Positivity Project is helping over 400\,000 students to see the good in themselves---and in other people---which is giving them the foundation to build stronger relationships. \n\nEVENT NOTE: Please enter the building at State and Hill\, 735 S. State Street.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Two Spirit Identity: Indigenous Gender & Sexuality
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca Lynn is a Two Spirit artist from the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians\, in Harbor Springs\, MI. She studied sociology at the University of Michigan and is currently the owner and beader of QueerKwe Designs. Becca’s work aims to create representation for LGBTQ+ & Two Spirit indigenous folks by combining modern pride flags into her traditional beadwork. You can check out her work and mission on Instagram\, @queerkwe\, and Facebook\, QueerKwe Designs. \n\nThis lecture will explore the complexities of gender and sexuality within Native American communities and the ways these views continue to be impacted by colonization efforts. Traditionally fluid and accepting nations were forced to conform to rigid\, Western binaries through assimilation tactics\, such as compulsory Christianity and Native American Boarding Schools. Today\, LGBTQ2S+ and gender non conforming Indigenous people are reclaiming their space and traditionally sacred roles within their communities. Join us in learning about the emergence of Two Spirit identity\, a contemporary term created to reject colonial binaries and embrace traditionally fluid ideas of gender and sexuality within our Native American communities.
