Some have been tortured or killed through waterboarding, others have been forced into oceans to die or disappear. Refugees across world regions have drowned crossing bodies of water in hopes for a better life. \r\n\r\nMillions of people all over the world are being tortured, disappeared, and forcibly displaced by repressive regimes and wars while governments of other countries are denying them a safe place to live. There are now as many as 1.3 million survivors of politically motivated torture survivors living in the U.S. And over 70 million refugees in the world according to the United Nations Refugee Agency, the highest number in the almost 70 years since the refugee agency was founded.\r\n\r\nDuring this time of rapid political change worldwide, the Blood Underwater Workshop and Exhibition offers an opportunity for students, activists, members of civil society organizations, and NGOs to come together as change agents to protect human rights, freedom and dignity, and to spread peace, justice and love.\r\n\r\nBlood Underwater is a collaborative work, which encourages deep thinking and creative expression. It provides a voice for community members and activists, especially from political, national, racial, religious and other minorities, to express their concerns about global suffering through art. Participants gather around a large canvas with paints and music and are guided through a series of artistic expressions by \u201cartivist\u201d Elshafei Dafalla. The purpose is to use art to protest against violence, torture, enforced disappearances and other forms of brutality.\r\n\r\nBlood Underwater is a demand for \u201cfreedom, peace and justice\u201d -- from San Salvador to Khartoum to Sindh -- and throughout the world. This visual narrative will recognize men and women who have been murdered because they wanted to live in freedom, political prisoners, people forced from their homes, and those who have been tortured for standing up to dictatorships.\r\n\r\nThe Blood Underwater artwork narrative will connect participants to one another, and to refugees, asylum seekers, political prisoners and others who have already died or are currently suffering in their own countries or in new lands. This collaboration and new knowledge will enable participants to reflect together about global suffering, and what can be done about it.\r\n\r\n-------\r\nEishafei Dafalla received a Bachelor of Arts in Sculpture from the College of Fine and Applied Art at the University for Science and Technology in Khartoum, Sudan as well as a Diploma in Folklore from the Afro-Asian Institute at the University of Khartoum. He earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Stamps School of Art and Design at University of Michigan. Dafalla has participated in more than fifty exhibits worldwide, and his work is part of public and private collections in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the United States. He continues to lecture and to exhibit his work, holding artist residencies, participating in community building activities, and creating performative installation events around the U.S. and internationally. Although literary papyri represent a small fraction of surviving papyrus texts, they nonetheless enable scholars both to improve their readings of known literary texts and to illuminate the rich diversity of ancient Greek literature, the overwhelming majority of which has been lost to time.\r\n\r\nThe Greek literature that survives complete in the present day largely represents the texts that were the most popular in antiquity, works like Homer\u2019s Iliad and Euripides\u2019 Medea. These texts were repeatedly copied throughout antiquity and the Middle Ages, ensuring their continued transmission. Studying the emergence of rituals in childhood provides insight into the complex dynamics of social group cognition. This talk will examine how children identify and acquire ritual to affiliate with social groups, how evaluations of ritual performance may differ across cultures, and initial work uncovering the relationship between ritual and cooperation. The results provide insight into the early-developing preference for in-group members and are consistent with the proposal that rituals facilitate in-group cohesion. Most in-demand have been cuneiform-inscribed objects \u2013 the material texts of Iraqi prehistory. Many thousands of these cuneiform objects have entered private collections in North America, Europe and beyond, where their texts are being studied and published by university-based scholars. These scholars have identified texts from what were previously unknown and presently unlocated sites \u2013 from intact archives now broken up and dispersed on the market. Ethical challenges to the scholarly reception of trafficked cuneiform objects are deflected with what can be construed as orientalist arguments of rescue, preservation, and scholarship. While \u2018western\u2019 scholarship has certainly benefited from this unexpected windfall of \u2018recently appeared\u2019 texts, the damage suffered by Iraqi archaeological heritage and the associated loss to Iraqi intellectual and cultural life remain to be assessed. This talk will offer an up-to-date assessment of the situation and engage with the cultural, legal and ethical issues raised by this large-scale movement of cuneiform objects out of Iraq.\r\n\r\nNeil Brodie is Senior Research Fellow on the Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa project at the University of Oxford\u2019s School of Archaeology. He has published widely on issues concerning the market in trafficked cultural objects, with more than fifty papers and book chapters devoted to the subject. Most recently he has co-authored Trafficking Culture: New Directions in Researching the Global Market in Illicit Antiquities (2019, Routledge). Central to our approach is a discrete-event simulator to evaluate the impact of ambulance deployments to logs of emergency requests. We first model ambulance allocation as an approximately-submodular-maximization problem, and devise a simple and efficient greedy algorithm that produces both static allocations and dynamic repositioning policies. In parallel, we find data-driven information-relaxation bounds for both static and dynamic cases. We build even tighter information-relaxation bounds by penalizing the previous relaxations. Our approach allows the computation of tight bounds without incurring the curse of dimensionality common to such approaches. Our bounding methods help inform policymakers about the viability of proposed fleet sizes and policies being adopted by the contracted EMS agencies. Our computational experiments on an Asian city's EMS demonstrate the tractability and efficiency of our greedy algorithm and our bounding methods. \r\n\r\nThe first part of this work is with Ramayya Krishnan and Yisong Yue, and the latter part with Achal Bassamboo.\r\n\r\nLavanya Marla is an Assistant Professor in Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to her current position, she was a Systems Scientist with the Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University; and earned her PhD in Transportation Systems from MIT and Bachelors degree from IIT Madras. Her research interests are in robust and dynamic decision-making under uncertainty and game theoretic analysis for large-scale transportation and logistics systems; combining tools from data-driven optimization, statistics, simulation and machine learning. Her research is funded by an integrative National Science Foundation grant, a Department of Homeland Security cyber-security grant, the Department of Transportation, the US-India Educational Foundation, the INFORMS Transportation and Logistics Society and aviation companies. Her work has received an Honorable mention for the Anna Valicek award from AGIFORS, a best presentation award from AGIFORS, a KDD Startup Research award, and a Top-10 cited paper recognition from Transportation Research \u2013 Part A.\r\n\r\n1123 LBME is room 1123 in the Ann & Robert H. In 1990s Poland, boundary-pushing artists like Artur \u017bmijewski played an active role in shaping the new reality. As time progressed, however, the promise of transformative change was revealed to be illusory, and the communists' dominant style of politics persisted. Art became a target for political attacks because of its critical stance toward the Catholic Church and \u201cwild\u201d capitalism. \r\n \r\nHow should artists react in this increasingly authoritarian situation? Resist? Adapt? Or perhaps create a sort of hybrid position? In this lecture, \u017bmijewski will discuss the relationship between his art and political engagement in the context of the past thirty years. \r\n \r\nArtur Z\u0307mijewski was born in Warsaw in 1966. He graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts under the supervision of Professor Grzegorz Kowalski. A multimedia artist, he uses primarily photography and film to explore the line between fiction and documentary. \u017bmijewski is also an accomplished curator and art critic. He is one of the founding members of the art journal \"Czereja,\" serves as the artistic editor of \"Krytyka Polityczna,\" and directed the 7th Berlin Biennale. In 1995, Z\u0307mijewski was a fellow at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam; he received the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Per L'Arte Prize for his work \"An Eye for an Eye.\" In 2005, his \u201cRepetition\u201d was shown in the Polish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and two years later his film *Them* was screened at Documenta in Kassel. \u017bmijewski also participated in the 14th edition of Documenta, presenting his films *Glimpse* and *Realism*. From 2007-2008, he was a DAAD Artist in Residence in Berlin where he prepared his project \u201cDemocracies.\u201d In 2010 he received the Ordway Prize from the New Museum in New York and Creative Link for the Arts.
