SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cages\, Nests & Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Anne Bae is a multidisciplinary artist based out of New York. Her sculptural works are infused with symbolism and metaphors in the forms of cages\, nests and butterflies. All works are made entirely of varying weights and types of paper\, including hanji (Korean traditional) and common coffee filters. Representing concepts of time\, memory\, openness and constraint\, the pieces are created with traditional methods\, using scissors and simple die-cutting tools\; cross-disciplinary techniques\, such as weaving and tatting used in fiber arts\; and technologies like laser cutting machines. There are two series of paper nests: one created entirely without the use of adhesive\, and the other involves tatting with knots. Viewers are encouraged to contemplate\, find meaning and ultimately – hope.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2.\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fractured History: Digital Art on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Fractured History explores concepts of identity\, love\, loss and the connection between music\, history and civil rights. Aaron Dworkin is a social entrepreneur\, author\, artist and professor of music. Classically trained in the violin\, Dworkin grew up in a diverse household\; his adoptive family is Jewish\, his biological mother is Irish Catholic\, and his biological father is African-American and a Jehovah’s Witness. His passion for inclusion and social justice inspired him to found the Sphinx Organization\, which works to help reflect the diversity in the US in orchestras. The digital and mixed media works in this exhibit combine elements of music\, diversity\, and an evolving aesthetic of the abstract that mirrors a disjunct search for unconditional love. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Rogel Cancer Center\, Level 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Healing Power of Nature: Mixed Media
DESCRIPTION:Allison Svoboda was born in Detroit. A proud Midwesterner\, she splits her time between studios in Chicago and Pentwater\, Michigan. She is recognized for her ethereal paintings and sculptural installations. Finding the edge between intuitive and deliberate mark making\, Svoboda’s work is a meditation on the earth’s last places of quiet and untouched beauty. Challenging the viewer to rethink their responsibility to Mother Earth\, her collage works are intricate paintings layered to create sculptural works. These paintings are based on fractal geometry (infinitely unfolding terrains of self-similar shapes like those in living things. In 2015\, she received a Hemera fellowship to study Zen and calligraphy in Japan\, which continues to influence her work. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:High School Photo Project
DESCRIPTION:In her early career\, Linda Erf Swift worked as a teacher and social worker in public schools\, and later graduated from the School of the Art Institute\, Chicago. 12 years into her current work\, Swift photographs students in three high schools on Chicago’s Southside: Kenwood Academy\, King College Prep (public schools) and University High (private). She asks seniors to bring in a quotation they believe speaks to their identity\, and Swift takes their portrait with it on a blackboard behind them. The images challenge viewers to evaluate their assumptions about adolescents by opening a door into what young people really think and aspire to. The students’ choices reveal a youth culture that is wise and artistic\, assertive and joyful\, discerning and full of possibility.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center South Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Personal Space: Oil & Chalk Pastel
DESCRIPTION:In this body of work\, Detroit artist and U-M alumna Laura Cavanagh explores quiet\, intimate spaces. An introvert by nature\, “space\,” and the preservation of personal space\, is immensely important to her. She encounters these spaces both indoors and out\, and she employs light and color to capture her emotional state relevant to the space. She works with oil and chalk pastel\, a medium that allows her to make tangible those moments that are fleeting and transitory. Cavanagh breaks down architectural elements into bold blocks of color\, creating an atmosphere of still quietude\, so critical to her creative process. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2.\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shrines & Reliquaries: Memorializing Climate
DESCRIPTION:In 2017 Leslie Sobel\, as artist in residence at Kluane National Park in Yukon Territory\, Canada\, camped on an icefield with a group of climate scientists. The landscape shrines in this exhibit combine her work as an environmental artist with the experience of that pristine\, remote\, beautiful\, and at risk environment. The mixed media boxes – utilizing painting\, monotype\, photography\, resin and encaustic – capture memories of places being altered by climate change. Meant to bring complex ideas and big emotions into a size one can literally hold in one’s hands\, the works have charred exteriors and bright colors and metal leaf echoing traditional Tibetan iconography in depicting the beauty and spiritual power of high places. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center South Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Whimsical Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Surrealist painter and instructor Greg Potter is based in Franklin\, Indiana. After more than 20 years in the service and four tours in the Middle East\, he is now pursuing his passion in painting and 3D art. Lightheartedness\, quirkiness\, and a desire for freedom are his creatures’ main traits as they fly on nests\, sail on lakes\, or venture into outer space. Looking for autonomy on their way somewhere\, his boldly colored animal explorers\, tourists\, and misfits are uncaring about their surroundings and challenge expectations. They are out of their element due to circumstances beyond their control. One patient shared that for her\, Potter’s work symbolized the process of adapting to a diagnosis by transforming into someone stronger and wiser without losing who you really are.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:NOS: Dismantling the Otro
DESCRIPTION:“NOS: Dismantling the Otro” is a presentation of work from the thesis project of Social Theory and Practice major Tess Garcia. The project\, which takes the form of a magazine\, profiles eight Latinx students at the University of Michigan. Each student participated in a one-on-one interview with Tess\, during which they discussed the struggles they face in relation to their heritage. Their answers served as the basis for a feature-style article. Students also took part in individual photoshoots with Tess\, whose location\, style and focus they directed. Those photos are featured in this exhibition\, along with excerpts from each student’s interview. Copies of the original magazine will be available for viewing within the gallery space. \n\n>> Opening Reception: Friday\, January 10 from 6-8pm. Refreshments will be served. \n\nIn Spanish\, “nosotros” means “we.” On its own\, however\, “otros” means “others.” The title of this exhibition omits the latter part of the word to symbolize Tess’s dreams for the Latinx community: a shared space of “we” where nobody feels like the other. \n\nTess Garcia is a senior at the University of Michigan majoring in Communication and Media and Social Theory and Practice through the Residential College. Her work in STP has centered around exploring Latinx issues through journalism\, culminating in the creation of the print magazine and accompanying exhibition for “NOS: Dismantling the Otro.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color  to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support of this exhibition:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics:
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 60s and 70s\, artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. During these decades\, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. Their new formal and intellectual strategies—seen here across large-scale and miniature work—dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s in a politically shifting American landscape.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mari Katayama
DESCRIPTION:Japanese artist Mari Katayama (born 1987) features her own body in a provocative series of works combining photography\, sculpture\, and textile. Born with a developmental condition\, the artist had both her legs amputated at the age of nine and has worn prosthetics ever since. In order to fill a deep gap between her own understanding of self and physicality\, and contemporary society’s simplistic categorizations\, Katayama began to explore her identity by objectifying her body in her art. In photographs she assumes different personas\, dressed in revealing lingerie in private\, domestic spaces or in dramatic waterscapes. The unflinching display of the vulnerabilities and limits of Katayama’s body opens up a broader conversation about anxieties and wounds for all of us—disabled or nondisabled—living in an age obsessed with body image. UMMA’s installation will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in the U.S.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Center for Japanese Studies\, the Japan Business Society of Detroit Foundation\, the Japan Cultural Development\, and Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, the University of Michigan CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund\, Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures\, and Women's Studies Department.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reflections: An Ordinary Day
DESCRIPTION:UMMA’s second exhibition of Inuit art derived from the Power Family’s generous promised gift to the Museum in 2018 explores the relationship between the artist and the representation of everyday experiences. Through a selection of mid-century to contemporary Inuit prints\, drawings\, and sculptures that portray seemingly ordinary reflections of daily life along with daydreaming meditations\, the exhibition bridges the mundane and the fantastic. Together\, these artworks present a distinct imagery and a visual poetry culled from the day-to-day reality of life in the far polar north. The perspectives range from soaring gazes at the horizon to glimpses of commonplace social interactions. These contemplations reveal intimate connections among the artists\, their communities\, and their locale—a specific place and time composed of icy regions and vast seas and tundras. Reflections: An Ordinary Day takes visitors on a lyrical journey of the myriad spaces and routines within an Arctic landscape.\n\nThis exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art\, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Take Your Pick: Collecting Found Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Come help build our collection of “ordinary” American 20th-century photographs.\n \nTake Your Pick invites you—the Museum’s visitors—to select photographs for our permanent collection. What belongs in a permanent collection\, and why? Who and what should be represented\, and how should we decide? This exhibition considers these questions in regard to 1\,000 amateur photographs on loan from the private collection of Peter J. Cohen\, who has gathered more than 60\,000 snapshots while exploring flea markets in the United States and Europe over two decades. The images he has collected depict all aspects of daily life and reveal the dynamic histories of amateur photography. Such pictures have particular significance in the current digital age\, when it is much less common to make physical copies of personal photographs. They constitute important artifacts of twentieth-century visual culture and precedents for the photographs we still make today. You are invited to make your voice heard in the selection process by voting for the photographs that resonate most with you!  \n \nVote for your favorite pictures: Saturday\, September 21\, 2019 – Sunday\, January 12\, 2020 Final selections on view: Tuesday\, January 14 – Sunday\, February 23\, 2020\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by Cecilia and Mark Vonderheide and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and Department of Film\, Television\, and Media.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complex Systems Seminar | The challenges of consensus: zealotry and information gerrymandering on social networks
DESCRIPTION:Social decision making - from voting in a national election to investing in the stock market - is fundamental to human behavior. But the outcome of social decisions are notoriously hard to predict. Even in a simple setting\, such as the Prisoner’s Dilemma\, the result depends on a complex interplay between the assumptions\, intentions and understanding of two individuals. When social decisions play out across a whole social network the dynamics can become dauntingly complex. Yet understanding how a social network structures the information environment\, and the resulting effects on individual and collective decisions\, is an increasingly urgent challenge.\n\nIn this talk I will give a brief overview of my research building mathematical and computational models as tools to study collective decisions\, inter-group attitudes and prosocial behavior. I will describe my recent work using a combination of game-theoretic modeling\, online experiments and analysis of social network data to predict outcomes in a voter game. I will show how such games naturally produce intransigent zealots\, and how superficially ``fair’’ social networks can nonetheless lead to heavily biased collective decisions - a phenomenon we call information gerrymandering. Finally I will discuss my plans for future research and collaborations\, to study how individual behavioral and population dynamics play out on complex social networks.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Religion and Politics in Japan: Mapping a Shifting Terrain
DESCRIPTION:In Japan today\, a wide range of religious actors are now shaping educational curricula\, social policies\, and defense postures promoted by Prime Minister Abe Shinzō and his governing coalition. So profound is religious influence on the coalition that one cannot understand Japanese politics without understanding its religious dimensions. In this talk\, McLaughlin will draw on his ongoing ethnographic research on Shinto-\, Buddhism- and Christian- aligned participants within Nippon Kaigi (Japan Conference)\, as well as his work within the Buddhist lay organization Soka Gakkai and its affiliated party Komeito\, to bring to life religion-inspired people who compete to guide Japanese policymaking.\n \nLevi McLaughlin is Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies\, North Carolina State University. He is co-author of Kōmeitō: Politics and Religion in Japan (IEAS Berkeley\, 2014) and author of Soka Gakkai’s Human Revolution: The Rise of a Mimetic Nation in Modern Japan (University of Hawai`i Press\, 2019). Currently\, he is the 2019-2020 Toyota Visiting Professor in the Center for Japanese Studies\, University of Michigan\n \nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DEI Mentoring and Well-Being Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to all University of Michigan faculty. Space is limited to 20 participants. Light snacks will be served.\n\nResearch has shown that graduate students struggle with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression at higher rates than the general population. While some stress and uncertainty is unavoidable in graduate training\, research mentors can have a direct impact on the well-being (emotional\, physical\, and mental health) of members of their research group. By fostering an environment that supports well being\, mentors can positively impact mentees’ sense of autonomy\, competence\, personal growth\, and belonging. Developing the skills to have open conversations about these topics is key to this process.\n\nIn this interactive workshop\, faculty participants will engage in discussions and activities about mentee well-being using the Fostering Well-being curricula. Participants will: (1) learn the definition of mental health and identify signs of well being\; (2) develop awareness about how mentoring behaviors can impact mentee well-being\; (3) identify steps to creating an environment that fosters well-being in a diverse group of mentees\; and (4) learn to initiate conversations with mentees about their well-being and mental health.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CLASP Seminar Series: Dr. Seth Claudepierre
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Seth Claudepierre of UCLA will give a lecture as part of the CLASP Seminar Series.\nPlease join us!\n\nTitle: \"What's up (and down) in the Earth's Van Allen radiation belts?\" \n\nAbstract: The high-energy tail of the plasma in near-Earth space is trapped by the geomagnetic field\, forming the Van Allen radiation belts that encircle the Earth. Various physical processes can rapidly accelerate these charged particles to prodigious energies\, in excess of one megaelectron volt\, on timescales of one day or less. Owing to the hazard that this radiation poses to manmade technologies in space\, there is considerable interest in understanding the processes that govern the particle dynamics. To that end\, NASA launched the twin Van Allen Probes in 2012 to improve radiation belt predictability\, and radiation belt science has evolved significantly over that time. With the recent conclusion of the mission\, it is time to survey the landscape to take stock of where we have been\, and where we are going. We will thus present an overview of recent advances in radiation belt science\, highlighting current research trends and several unresolved issues\, with an emphasis on what has been revealed in the Van Allen Probes observations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:BME 500: Kent Leach\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Advances in early detection of disease and increases in lifespan necessitate new strategies to repair or replace damaged organs and tissues. My research is directed toward incorporating cues from the native environment and natural extracellular matrix (ECM) into the design of cell culture platforms and musculoskeletal tissue engineered constructs. By applying fundamental principles in cell and molecular biology\, biomaterials\, and biotransport phenomena\, we are developing materials-based strategies to direct the behavior of transplanted or host cells within bone defects and interrogate the behavior of various cell populations in more physiologically relevant conditions. In this talk\, I will present examples of our recent work in designing biomaterials from cells and natural and synthetic polymers to instruct cell fate and enhance tissue formation and function with applications in bone regeneration and repair.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: What Can the Aerospace Field Do About Its Diversity Problem?
DESCRIPTION:Ken Powell\nArthur F. Thurnau Professor and DEI Faculty Liaison\nAerospace Engineering\, UM\n\nThe other talks this semester will be based on research in Aerospace Sciences and Engineering. This talk is based on research in the Social Sciences - particularly Psychology\, Sociology\, Economics - and how it applies to education and careers in aerospace engineering.\n\nFor the past five years\, I have been part of a group of Michigan professors who read this social science literature\, and meet to discuss its implications on academic careers - teaching\, research\, service and hiring of faculty. We also give talks about why and how to improve diversity in faculty hiring to faculty throughout the university\, department chairs and deans\, and faculty at other universities.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present some classical and recent social science research about issues that affect our ability to hire and retain a diverse and excellent faculty\, particularly in STEM fields\, and especially in aerospace engineering. Topics will include implicit bias\, stereotype threat\, accumulation of disadvantage\, and some of the steps we are taking as a university to improve the composition of the faculty. I will also present data about the demographics of the aerospace field\, and give you some strategies for being a part of the much-needed solution to Aerospace's diversity challenges.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nProfessor Powell is a member and past director of the W. M. Keck Foundation Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory\, and a co-founder and co-director of the Center for Space Environment Modeling and the the Center for Radiative Shock Hydrodynamics. At the undergraduate level\, he teaches freshman computing\, compressible flow\, aerodynamics and aircraft design\; at the graduate level\, he teaches aerodynamics and computational fluid dynamics. His research interests include: algorithm development for fluid dynamics\, aerodynamics and plasmadynamics\; and the application of computational methods to problems in aerodynamics\, aeroelasticity\, fluid dynamics and space environment/space weather. His articles appear in Journal of Fluid Mechanics\, Journal of Computational Physics\, and Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics\, among others. He is also a co-author of Multi-Media Fluid Mechanics. He has received a number of awards for his research\, including a National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award\, and a number of awards for his teaching\, including the Arthur F. Thurnau Professorship. He is married to Susanne Maria Krummel\; they have three children: Jasmine\, Ryan and Nicole.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM Theory Seminar | Imaging Nematic Quantum Hall States and their Interacting Boundary Modes
DESCRIPTION:Two-dimensional quantum Hall systems offer a versatile platform to explore the interplay between topology and symmetry breaking facilitated by Coulomb interactions. In this talk\, I discuss the novel phenomena that arise from spontaneous valley ordering of bismuth surface states in a large magnetic field. Specifically\, we observe the emergence of a nematic phase which breaks the rotational symmetry of the underlying crystal and a ferroelectric phase that carries an in-plane electric dipole moment. We use a scanning tunneling microscope to identify and directly image the wavefunctions of these broken-symmetry quantum Hall phases. Furthermore\, we explore the boundary between distinct nematic domains\, which host counter-propagating 1D modes. By changing the number of modes\, we realize strikingly different regimes where the boundary is either metallic or insulating\, constrained by Coulomb interactions between these 1D modes.\n
