SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cages\, Nests & Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Anne Bae is a multidisciplinary artist based out of New York. Her sculptural works are infused with symbolism and metaphors in the forms of cages\, nests and butterflies. All works are made entirely of varying weights and types of paper\, including hanji (Korean traditional) and common coffee filters. Representing concepts of time\, memory\, openness and constraint\, the pieces are created with traditional methods\, using scissors and simple die-cutting tools\; cross-disciplinary techniques\, such as weaving and tatting used in fiber arts\; and technologies like laser cutting machines. There are two series of paper nests: one created entirely without the use of adhesive\, and the other involves tatting with knots. Viewers are encouraged to contemplate\, find meaning and ultimately – hope.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2.\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fractured History: Digital Art on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Fractured History explores concepts of identity\, love\, loss and the connection between music\, history and civil rights. Aaron Dworkin is a social entrepreneur\, author\, artist and professor of music. Classically trained in the violin\, Dworkin grew up in a diverse household\; his adoptive family is Jewish\, his biological mother is Irish Catholic\, and his biological father is African-American and a Jehovah’s Witness. His passion for inclusion and social justice inspired him to found the Sphinx Organization\, which works to help reflect the diversity in the US in orchestras. The digital and mixed media works in this exhibit combine elements of music\, diversity\, and an evolving aesthetic of the abstract that mirrors a disjunct search for unconditional love. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Rogel Cancer Center\, Level 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Healing Power of Nature: Mixed Media
DESCRIPTION:Allison Svoboda was born in Detroit. A proud Midwesterner\, she splits her time between studios in Chicago and Pentwater\, Michigan. She is recognized for her ethereal paintings and sculptural installations. Finding the edge between intuitive and deliberate mark making\, Svoboda’s work is a meditation on the earth’s last places of quiet and untouched beauty. Challenging the viewer to rethink their responsibility to Mother Earth\, her collage works are intricate paintings layered to create sculptural works. These paintings are based on fractal geometry (infinitely unfolding terrains of self-similar shapes like those in living things. In 2015\, she received a Hemera fellowship to study Zen and calligraphy in Japan\, which continues to influence her work. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:High School Photo Project
DESCRIPTION:In her early career\, Linda Erf Swift worked as a teacher and social worker in public schools\, and later graduated from the School of the Art Institute\, Chicago. 12 years into her current work\, Swift photographs students in three high schools on Chicago’s Southside: Kenwood Academy\, King College Prep (public schools) and University High (private). She asks seniors to bring in a quotation they believe speaks to their identity\, and Swift takes their portrait with it on a blackboard behind them. The images challenge viewers to evaluate their assumptions about adolescents by opening a door into what young people really think and aspire to. The students’ choices reveal a youth culture that is wise and artistic\, assertive and joyful\, discerning and full of possibility.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center South Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Personal Space: Oil & Chalk Pastel
DESCRIPTION:In this body of work\, Detroit artist and U-M alumna Laura Cavanagh explores quiet\, intimate spaces. An introvert by nature\, “space\,” and the preservation of personal space\, is immensely important to her. She encounters these spaces both indoors and out\, and she employs light and color to capture her emotional state relevant to the space. She works with oil and chalk pastel\, a medium that allows her to make tangible those moments that are fleeting and transitory. Cavanagh breaks down architectural elements into bold blocks of color\, creating an atmosphere of still quietude\, so critical to her creative process. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2.\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shrines & Reliquaries: Memorializing Climate
DESCRIPTION:In 2017 Leslie Sobel\, as artist in residence at Kluane National Park in Yukon Territory\, Canada\, camped on an icefield with a group of climate scientists. The landscape shrines in this exhibit combine her work as an environmental artist with the experience of that pristine\, remote\, beautiful\, and at risk environment. The mixed media boxes – utilizing painting\, monotype\, photography\, resin and encaustic – capture memories of places being altered by climate change. Meant to bring complex ideas and big emotions into a size one can literally hold in one’s hands\, the works have charred exteriors and bright colors and metal leaf echoing traditional Tibetan iconography in depicting the beauty and spiritual power of high places. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center South Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Whimsical Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Surrealist painter and instructor Greg Potter is based in Franklin\, Indiana. After more than 20 years in the service and four tours in the Middle East\, he is now pursuing his passion in painting and 3D art. Lightheartedness\, quirkiness\, and a desire for freedom are his creatures’ main traits as they fly on nests\, sail on lakes\, or venture into outer space. Looking for autonomy on their way somewhere\, his boldly colored animal explorers\, tourists\, and misfits are uncaring about their surroundings and challenge expectations. They are out of their element due to circumstances beyond their control. One patient shared that for her\, Potter’s work symbolized the process of adapting to a diagnosis by transforming into someone stronger and wiser without losing who you really are.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dear Stranger: Diaries for the Private and Public Self
DESCRIPTION:Through this exhibit\, we invite you to explore more than two centuries of diaries and diary-like documents from across the holdings of the Special Collections Research Center\, ranging from privately emotive to publicly informative\, from offering news reportage to depicting emotional processing\, and from factual to purely fictional. As you read\, consider how these journals embody elements of both private and public writing and the permeability between those spheres.\n\nDiaries\, journals\, daily planners\, notebooks: these ephemeral writings provide documentation of private lives and thoughts that can otherwise be difficult to find in the historical record. But does “private” necessarily imply unfiltered and unmediated? Many theorists have noted that the diarist is both writer and reader\, both private and public self. Therefore the content and form of diaries are created for future reading\, even if only by a future version of the self. The ambiguity of a diary’s audience is heightened in the case of published diaries. The form suggests that we\, as readers\, are accessing raw\, unfiltered thoughts\, but rounds of revision are common\, and often essential to clearly convey the intended meaning. Even further from our notions of authentic\, private writing\, fictional diaries are written solely to be published and read by the public\, but use the diary form to draw the reader into a particular relationship with the text and its protagonist.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color  to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support of this exhibition:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics:
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 60s and 70s\, artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. During these decades\, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. Their new formal and intellectual strategies—seen here across large-scale and miniature work—dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s in a politically shifting American landscape.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mari Katayama
DESCRIPTION:Japanese artist Mari Katayama (born 1987) features her own body in a provocative series of works combining photography\, sculpture\, and textile. Born with a developmental condition\, the artist had both her legs amputated at the age of nine and has worn prosthetics ever since. In order to fill a deep gap between her own understanding of self and physicality\, and contemporary society’s simplistic categorizations\, Katayama began to explore her identity by objectifying her body in her art. In photographs she assumes different personas\, dressed in revealing lingerie in private\, domestic spaces or in dramatic waterscapes. The unflinching display of the vulnerabilities and limits of Katayama’s body opens up a broader conversation about anxieties and wounds for all of us—disabled or nondisabled—living in an age obsessed with body image. UMMA’s installation will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in the U.S.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Center for Japanese Studies\, the Japan Business Society of Detroit Foundation\, the Japan Cultural Development\, and Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, the University of Michigan CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund\, Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures\, and Women's Studies Department.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reflections: An Ordinary Day
DESCRIPTION:UMMA’s second exhibition of Inuit art derived from the Power Family’s generous promised gift to the Museum in 2018 explores the relationship between the artist and the representation of everyday experiences. Through a selection of mid-century to contemporary Inuit prints\, drawings\, and sculptures that portray seemingly ordinary reflections of daily life along with daydreaming meditations\, the exhibition bridges the mundane and the fantastic. Together\, these artworks present a distinct imagery and a visual poetry culled from the day-to-day reality of life in the far polar north. The perspectives range from soaring gazes at the horizon to glimpses of commonplace social interactions. These contemplations reveal intimate connections among the artists\, their communities\, and their locale—a specific place and time composed of icy regions and vast seas and tundras. Reflections: An Ordinary Day takes visitors on a lyrical journey of the myriad spaces and routines within an Arctic landscape.\n\nThis exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art\, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Take Your Pick: Collecting Found Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Come help build our collection of “ordinary” American 20th-century photographs.\n \nTake Your Pick invites you—the Museum’s visitors—to select photographs for our permanent collection. What belongs in a permanent collection\, and why? Who and what should be represented\, and how should we decide? This exhibition considers these questions in regard to 1\,000 amateur photographs on loan from the private collection of Peter J. Cohen\, who has gathered more than 60\,000 snapshots while exploring flea markets in the United States and Europe over two decades. The images he has collected depict all aspects of daily life and reveal the dynamic histories of amateur photography. Such pictures have particular significance in the current digital age\, when it is much less common to make physical copies of personal photographs. They constitute important artifacts of twentieth-century visual culture and precedents for the photographs we still make today. You are invited to make your voice heard in the selection process by voting for the photographs that resonate most with you!  \n \nVote for your favorite pictures: Saturday\, September 21\, 2019 – Sunday\, January 12\, 2020 Final selections on view: Tuesday\, January 14 – Sunday\, February 23\, 2020\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by Cecilia and Mark Vonderheide and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and Department of Film\, Television\, and Media.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Allen Sanderson: Teasing Out Ephemeral Data from HPC Applications or in SITU Visualization and Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: It is well known that as HPC applications have grown\, I/O has become a bottleneck\, which has required scientists to turn to in situ tools for data exploration. The focus of this exploration has typically been on simulation data. However\, applications also produce ephemeral data that is optionally written to disk for post hoc analysis\, but not otherwise saved or utilized by the application in subsequent time steps. One example of ephemeral data is runtime performance data. In this talk I will present the infrastructure implemented for efficiently collecting this and other data within the Uintah framework which was coupled to VisIt’s in situ toolkit for analysis and visualization. This collection and coupling allows performance data to be visualized using multiple domains giving insight previously not possible. As part this coupling\, we take advantage of VisIt’s in situ custom user interface to create a “simulation dashboard” that allows for in situ computational steering and visual debugging allowing for improvements in the development and simulation workflow.\n\nBio: Allen Sanderson\, Ph.D. is a Research Scientist at the University of Utah’s Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brown Bag Lecture | Rethinking Roman Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:This paper presents some of the first results of the project *Rethinking Roman Nutrition: Assessing the nutritional biochemistry and stable isotope chemistry of archaeobotanical cereals and pulses from Roman Egypt\,* a collaboration between the Free University Brussels and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. The project aims to obtain nutritional data from ancient seeds so as to establish a baseline for nutritional values of food in antiquity as there is overwhelming evidence that modern data are not representative for the past.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Free-living amoebae in drinking water networks: a treasure trove of intracellular (novel) bacteria
DESCRIPTION:Free-living amoebae (FLA) are unicellular eukaryotes\, ubiquitous in natural and man-made water environments. There\, FLA play important roles in regulating microbial populations\, as they feed on bacteria and other small eukaryotes by a mechanism involving ingestion by phagocytosis. It is thought that this predatory pressure favored – on multiple occasion – the adaption of several microorganisms (mainly bacteria) to the intracellular lifestyle\, by stimulating the arising of resistance mechanisms against phagocytosis.\n\nThus\, we aim to study FLA and their associations with microorganisms\, as it stands out as pertinent model not only for better understanding the establishment of symbioses\, but also for decrypting mechanisms employed by several bacterial pathogens thriving within eukaryotic cells.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag | Effective field theory near and far from equilibrium
DESCRIPTION:I will discuss effective field theories for two classes of non-equilibrium systems\, one far and one near equilibrium. In the first part I will present an effective response theory for topological driven (Floquet) systems\, which are inherently far from equilibrium. As an example\, I will discuss a topological chiral Floquet drive coupled to a background $U(1)$ field\, which gives rise to a theta term in the effective action. In the second part\, I will discuss an ongoing project using effective field theories for hydrodynamics. I will show that chiral diffusion for interacting systems in 1+1 dimensions\, which may be relevant to edge transport in quantum Hall systems\, has an infrared instability. I will then discuss the fate of this instability.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Will this Thruster Get Us to Europa? Modeling Ion Engine Erosion and Quantifying Lifetime Margins and Uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nSolar electric propulsion (EP) is a key technology for human and robotic space missions\, and is part of NASA’s vision for expanding human presence beyond low earth orbit. The high specific impulse of EP enables reductions in propellant mass\, but at the price of long burn times. Deep space missions re-quire operating times of many 104 hours. Demonstrating that the thruster meets this requirement is a challenge. Multiple life tests of the full mission duration are not practical. The life capability must be demonstrated by combining physics-based modeling and short duration testing.\n JPL developed the CEX2D and CEX3D codes to model erosion of ion accelerator systems in ion engines\, a dominant failure mechanism. The codes model a primary ion beamlet and charge exchange (CEX) ions from the beamlet. Impingement of main\, beamlet\, and CEX ions on the grids then determine erosion rates. The models predict time-to-failure\, but key questions include: What is the uncertainty in those estimates? How much margin is needed to account for the uncertainties? Estimating uncertainty in experiments is routine\, but the modeling community is still developing techniques for estimating errors. In this talk we discuss the physical processes of ion engine grid erosion\, how they are modeled\, and methods for quantifying model uncertainty and required life margins.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Polk is a Principal Engineer in the Propulsion\, Materials\, and Thermal Engineering Section at the Jet Propulsion Lab\, and a lecturer in Aerospace Engr. at Caltech. He received a BS in Aero. Engr. at Georgia Tech and a PhD in Mech. & Aero. Engr. from Princeton. Dr. Polk is an expert in high-current cathode physics\, EP wear processes\, high power EP\, and probabilistic methods to analyze engine life. He was the task manager for an 8200 hour wear test of a 2.3 kW ion engine as used on the Deep Space 1 mission\, was a co-investigator in the Next Generation Ion Propulsion Program and principal investigator of the Nuclear Electric Xenon Ion System program. From 1997 to 2001 he was supervisor of the Advanced Propulsion Group at JPL. He now manages JPL’s high power EP tasks and is the Deputy Ion Propulsion System Lead for the Advanced EP System for the Lunar Gateway. He has authored over 100 papers and has received 7 best paper awards at the Intl. EP Conference and the Joint Propulsion Conference.\n\nThe seminar will be web-simulcast. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CCMB Seminar: \"Synchrony and its Breakdown\"
DESCRIPTION:A Seminar by Complex Systems Affiliated Faculty Member Indika Rajapakse\,\nAssociate Professor of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics\nAssociate Professor of Mathematics\nAssociate Professor of Biomedical Engineering\n\nCCMB Seminar Series – sponsored by DCMB\n\nAbstract: Synchronization occurs all around us. It underlies how fireflies flash as one\, how human heart cells beat in unison\, and how superconductors conduct electricity with no resistance. Synchronization is present in the precision of the cell cycle\, and we can explore how breakdown of precision leads to disease. The many unique and fundamental functions of different cell types are achieved over and over independently\, through a form of synchronization involving choreography of many proteins and genes. I will share a general historic and descriptive introduction to synchrony\, including the classic work of Alan Turing. I will present some new work done jointly with Cleve Moler (MathWorks) and Steve Smale (UC Berkeley)\, where biology has inspired us to build new mathematical techniques to explore synchrony and its breakdown.\n\nhttps://primetime.bluejeans.com/a2m/live-event/rbuvycdc

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MLK Day Department Colloquium | Creating our Future: Attracting and Retaining the Best Students from All Backgrounds
DESCRIPTION:Physics now must compete for the best and brightest. How do we collectively locate\, nurture\, and advance students who will become our colleagues regardless of opportunities they may or may not have had as they began their studies? There is good evidence that strategies used to attract us into the field are missing large numbers of capable and eager students. I will discuss programs and new approaches that are opening the door to students who may not have felt welcome in the past\, but who are now bringing their insights and hard work to solving the next generation of physics problems. We will discuss how the Michigan physics department can help with and benefit from these programs.\n\nThis is an inaugural MLK Day Department Colloquium. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ASP Lecture | Overwhelming Absurdity: Vahé Oshagan’s Discourse of Diasporic Culture
DESCRIPTION:This lecture investigates how an obsession with the absurd informs Vahé Oshagan’s (1922-2000) vision of diasporic Armenian culture across his poetry\, prose\, and criticism. How has the absurd shaped Oshagan’s works over time? How has it influenced his paradoxical and provocative reappropriation of myth as a mode of witnessing the tragically absurd human existence? Dr. Jallatyan will elaborate on the problematic of the absurd (meaninglessness) as being inspired by a post-World War II European preoccupation with existentialism. By tracing the transformations of these configurations in Oshagan’s meta-historiographic and meta-allegorical works from the 1970s and 1980s\, Dr. Jallatyan will pay special attention to how the problematic of the absurd shaped Oshagan’s poetics and conception of language. The lecture will conclude with a discussion on decisive and singular features of Oshagan’s dynamic mode of negotiating difference for a diasporic culture. \n\nKaren Jallatyan received his PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of California\, Irvine in 2019. His dissertation\, entitled “Becoming Diaspora: Global Armenian Literature and Film after 1950\,” draws attention to the specifically post-national and post-catastrophic nature of diasporic Armenian culture in Western Armenian. It argues that finding ways to let Western Armenian language and literature thrive in a multicultural context is the only adequate response to the needs of this surviving culture.\n\nImage: Cover of Crossroads («Քառուղի»)\, Vahé Oshagan\, Beirut\, 1971. Gaba’s short film Super Girl (2014) about a school girl who wants to become a super hero was screened extensively in the international circuit. His medium-length documentary on Japanese anime subculture Japan in Nagaland was part of Film Southasia before being broadcast on Indian national television. His An Engineered Dream (2018) won The Asian Pitch funding award and has been screened internationally\, and had its India premiere on History 18 Channel.
