Maria seduces Pepe in order to run away with him\, but after promises and clandestine meetings\, Pepe takes off\, leaving her pregnant\, alone and in disgrace. There’s no time to lose for Maria’s mother\, who thinks abortion is the only solution. Yet despite her mother’s ancestral knowledge\, the baby remains\, “destined to live.”But destiny has more in store for Maria: a snakebite forces them to leave immediately in search of a hospital. The modern world Maria has so dreamt about will save her life\, but at what price… Palomitas Cineclub Winter 2020 Film Festival The Palomitas Cineclub\, organized by graduate students of the Romance Languages & Literatures Department\, has been awarded a Spanish Film Club Festival Grant* to sponsor public screenings of contemporary Iberoamerican film at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dear Stranger: Diaries for the Private and Public Self
DESCRIPTION:Through this exhibit\, we invite you to explore more than two centuries of diaries and diary-like documents from across the holdings of the Special Collections Research Center\, ranging from privately emotive to publicly informative\, from offering news reportage to depicting emotional processing\, and from factual to purely fictional. As you read\, consider how these journals embody elements of both private and public writing and the permeability between those spheres.\n\nDiaries\, journals\, daily planners\, notebooks: these ephemeral writings provide documentation of private lives and thoughts that can otherwise be difficult to find in the historical record. But does “private” necessarily imply unfiltered and unmediated? Many theorists have noted that the diarist is both writer and reader\, both private and public self. Therefore the content and form of diaries are created for future reading\, even if only by a future version of the self. The ambiguity of a diary’s audience is heightened in the case of published diaries. The form suggests that we\, as readers\, are accessing raw\, unfiltered thoughts\, but rounds of revision are common\, and often essential to clearly convey the intended meaning. Even further from our notions of authentic\, private writing\, fictional diaries are written solely to be published and read by the public\, but use the diary form to draw the reader into a particular relationship with the text and its protagonist.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Defense Dissertation: Dynamic Coverage Control and Estimation in Collaborative Networks of Human-Aerial/Space Co-Robots
DESCRIPTION:William M. Bentz\n\nCommittee:\nAssistant Professor Dimitra Panagou (Chair)\nProfessor Ella M. Atkins (Member)\nProfessor Ilya V. Kolmanovsky (Member)\nAssistant Professor Ram Vasudevan (Cognate Member)\n\nPresentation Info:\nMarch 18\, 2020\n10:00 AM\n1044 FXB (McDivitt Conference Room)\n\nThe past twenty years have seen rapid improvements in the performance of small unmanned aerial vehicles as well as the continued miniaturization of low-cost sensors. The intersection of these technologies has given rise to a renaissance of control and decision-making developments geared towards mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSNs). One such development\, dynamic coverage control\, enables MWSNs to rapidly explore and gather information from uncertain environments. This defense will overview contributions to dynamic coverage in environments containing information decay\, stochastic intruders\, and power-constrained vehicles.\n\nThe extension of coverage to collaborative networks of humans and aerial/space robots shall also be presented. The author considers a human wearing an augmented reality (AR) device while completing multiple interdependent tasks that are time-sensitive and spatially separated. The problem of coverage is here coupled to that of human intent inference. An aerial robot shares the environment and uses machine learning in order to determine both the locations of tasks as well as their temporal context. This enables the streaming of real time task images that are beyond the human’s field of view to their AR display. In such a way\, the human can instantaneously cover a greater volume of the environment than is naturally possible.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cullen Washington\, Jr.: The Public Square
DESCRIPTION:This expansive look at the work and concerns of emerging contemporary artist Cullen Washington\, Jr. pivots around the artist’s most recent series\, Agoras. The compositions explore the ancient Greek public space as a site for activated assembly and the heart of the artistic\, spiritual\, and political life of the city. UMMA’s installation is designed with an actual public square at its center\, complete with sound components featuring noted political and aesthetic discourse and surrounded by Washington’s soaring monumental collages. Works from four earlier series by the artist form the perimeter of the Museum’s largest special exhibition space. The artist describes his work as “abstract meditations on the grid and humanity.”\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, Candy and Michael Barasch\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, and the Institute for the Humanities. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reflections: An Ordinary Day
DESCRIPTION:UMMA’s second exhibition of Inuit art derived from the Power Family’s generous promised gift to the Museum in 2018 explores the relationship between the artist and the representation of everyday experiences. Through a selection of mid-century to contemporary Inuit prints\, drawings\, and sculptures that portray seemingly ordinary reflections of daily life along with daydreaming meditations\, the exhibition bridges the mundane and the fantastic. Together\, these artworks present a distinct imagery and a visual poetry culled from the day-to-day reality of life in the far polar north. The perspectives range from soaring gazes at the horizon to glimpses of commonplace social interactions. These contemplations reveal intimate connections among the artists\, their communities\, and their locale—a specific place and time composed of icy regions and vast seas and tundras. Reflections: An Ordinary Day takes visitors on a lyrical journey of the myriad spaces and routines within an Arctic landscape.\n\nThis exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art\, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Witness Lab
DESCRIPTION:Designed as a courtroom installation and a performance series by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan\, Witness Lab frames witnessing as a social and artistic act. The gallery collapses courtroom\, theater\, classroom\, laboratory\, and artist studio in order to study the relationship between performance and law. In hosting mock trials\, court transcript readings\, and trial advocacy workshops\, the artist investigates who performs the role of witness in our society and how that understanding may map onto the narrower legal definition of the role. The installation will host legal simulations from participating groups\, including the Trial Advocacy Society and the Oral Argument Competition from the University of Michigan Law School\, as well as the undergraduate team of the Collegiate American Mock Trial Association. Taking the role of courtroom sketch artists\, or court reporters\, students from the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design will observe and document the courtroom performances through drawing\, text\, photography\, and video.\n\nWitness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELLED: “Suing for an Enslaved Woman’s Child in the Nineteenth-Century Río de la Plata”
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a lunchtime discussion of the pre-circulated paper:\n	\n“Suing for an Enslaved Woman’s Child in the Nineteenth-Century Río de la Plata”\n\nThis article traces the history of Petrona\, an enslaved woman sold in Santa Fe (Argentina)\, sent to Buenos Aires and later possibly to Montevideo (Uruguay). Her case demonstrates how the legal status of enslaved persons was affected by the redefinitions of jurisdictions and by the forced or voluntary crossings between political units. It sheds light on the circulation and uses of the Free Womb law (1813) in Argentina and Uruguay and traces legal experts’ debates over its meaning. And it reveals the knowledge enslaved people had of those abolitionist norms and how they used them to resist forced relocations\, attempt favorable migrations\, or achieve full freedom. The article reflects on the impact of independence on enslaved persons’ lives\, the gendered bias of the abolitionist process\, and the\ncentral yet untold uses of antislavery rhetoric in the national narratives.\n\nThe article will be circulated in advance of the event\; please contact Elizabeth Collins (elizabac@umich.edu) to obtain a copy.\n\nMagdalena Candioti is Associate Researcher of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICET) at the Instituto de Historia Argentina y Americana “Dr Emilio Ravignani” and Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities and Sciences\, Universidad Nacional del Litoral\, Argentina. Candioti’s doctoral research focused on the political history of justice in the nineteenth-century Río de la Plata\, resulting in the book Un maldito derecho: leyes\, jueces y derecho en la Buenos Aires republicana\, 1810–1830 (Buenos Aires\, Didot). She is currently working on a book on gradual abolition in the Río de la Plata (1810-1860) called El tiempo de los libertos. Esclavitud y abolición en el Río de la Plata. Candioti was a visiting fellow in ILAS-Columbia University\, NYC (2010-2011)\, and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History (MPIeR)\, Frankfurt\, Germany (2014). In 2014\, she was awarded a scholarship by the Slicher van Bath DeJong Foundation\, CEDLA (Holland) to conduct comparative research on slavery in Santa Fe and Buenos Aires. Currently\, she is a Fulbright fellow at the Afro-Latin American Research Institute at Harvard University. \n\nÁngela Pérez-Villa is an Assistant Professor of History and Gender and Women’s Studies at Western Michigan University. Her research and teaching focus on the social\, legal\, and gender history of Latin America\, particularly Colombia. Currently\, she is working on a book manuscript that examines how during Colombia’s war of independence\, political power and legal practice were disputed and reconfigured locally on the terrains of family\, sexuality\, and gender. \n\nSponsored by the U-M Department of History\, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the Law in Slavery and Freedom Project.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELED: MIPSE Seminar | Quantum Hydrodynamics and Warm Dense Matter
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe experimental and computational investigation of both equilibrium and non-equilibrium strongly coupled systems with partially or fully degenerate electrons is an intellectu-ally stimulating and scientifically challenging problem. Warm dense matter (WDM) is of particular interest since it “exists in the lower-temperature portion of the high energy density (HED) regime\, under conditions where the assumptions of both condensed-matter theory and ideal-plasma theory break down\, and where quantum mechanics\, particle correlations\, and electric forces are all important.” [FESAC 2009]. Interiors of giant planets\, brown dwarfs\, and neutron star envelopes are all examples of WDM. A wide variety of theoretical methods have been developed and are in routine use for studying warm dense matter. This includes density functional theory\, time-dependent density functional theory\, and quantum kinetic theory. Recently\, there has been a resurgence in interest in using a “simpler” approach to investigating WDM based on quantum hydrodynamics. Quantum Hydrodynamics (QHD) has a long and interesting history\, dating back to the first developments by Madelung and Bohm. In this talk\, we discuss the historical and recent developments in QHD as applied to quantum many-body systems relevant to HED regimes. Recent work involving adding a QHD capability to the radiation hydrodynamics code MIRANDA will be discussed with applications to the electron gas.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nFrank Graziani received a BS in physics from Santa Clara U.\, and a PhD in physics from UCLA. He was a postdoctoral fellow at U. Colorado and U. Minnesota working in cosmology and particle physics\; and worked with NASA on exoplanet dynamics and star formation. Dr. Graziani joined Lawrence Livermore National Lab. in 1989 where he works in radiation transport and plasma physics. He has held many leadership positions at LLNL\, including code project lead\, group leader\, V&V Leader\, PI for LDRD-Strategic Initiatives\, lead for the National Boost Initiative and Assoc. Division Leader for computational physics. He now directs the High Energy Density Sciences Center. He has won four DOE Defense Program Awards of Excellence\, the LLNL Director’s S&T Award and is a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff. His research interests include the micro-physics of dense plasmas and HED education. Dr. Graziani is editor of two books on computational methods and a book on WDM physics.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:POSTPONED: Speaking American English
DESCRIPTION:ALL UCLL EVENTS HAVE BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. \n\nAre you looking to increase confidence in your use of American English? The University Center for Language and Literacy (UCLL) at U-M offers a special workshop designed for non-native English speakers who want to expand their communication skills. Our program provides the perfect environment for you to reach your personal goals and we’re registering now!\n\nOur certified Speech and Language Pathologists use techniques technically known as accent reduction to help non-native speakers feel more at home in their communications — whether that’s giving a presentation or taking notes in a class with a native speaker with a fast cadence. The goal of the program is certainly not to eliminate the accents of our clients\, but to enhance communication skills for greater confidence in all settings. Participants will set their own individual objectives at the start of the workshop and will work to reach those goals using a combination of small group activities and one-on-one interaction\, facilitated by a Speech and Language Pathologist.\nThe workshop will run from February 5 to April 15\, 2020. Participants meet weekly on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. There will be no meeting on March 4. \nIf you have questions\, need assistance\, or want more information\, please call (734) 764-8440 or visit https://mari.umich.edu/ucll

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELED Author's Forum Presents: \"The Divo and the Duce: Promoting Film Stardom and Political Leadership in 1920s America\"
DESCRIPTION:Giorgio Bertellini (film\, television\, and media and Romance languages and literatures) and Jay Cook (history\, American culture) discuss Bertellini's new book\, followed by Q & A.\n\nAbout the book:\n In the post–World War I American climate of isolationism\, nativism\, democratic expansion of civic rights\, and consumerism\, Italian-born star Rodolfo Valentino and Italy’s dictator Benito Mussolini became surprising paragons of authoritarian male power and mass appeal. Drawing on extensive archival research in the United States and Italy\, Giorgio Bertellini’s work shows how their popularity\, both political and erotic\, largely depended on the efforts of public opinion managers\, including publicists\, journalists\, and even ambassadors. Beyond the democratic celebrations of the Jazz Age\, the promotion of their charismatic masculinity through spectacle and press coverage inaugurated the now-familiar convergence of popular celebrity and political authority.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELED: Brick by Brick: Building Hope and Opportunity for Women Survivors Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:Due to the COVID-19 situation\, this event has been canceled. \n\nFree and open to the public. Reception to follow.\n\nThis event will be livestreamed. Check event website right before the event for viewing details.\n\nJoin us for a conversation with Associate Professor John Ciorciari and author Karen Sherman to discuss her book\, Brick by Brick: Building Hope and Opportunity for Women Survivors Everywhere. Sherman has spent 30 years in global development advocating for women in war-torn and transitional countries such as Iraq\, Afghanistan\, Bosnia\, Congo\, Nigeria\, Rwanda\, South Sudan\, Kosovo\, and the former Soviet Union. She began writing Brick by Brick during the year she spent living in Rwanda with her three sons to oversee the construction of a first-of-its-kind women’s opportunity center. The strength of these women helped Karen find her own way--through conflict zones and confrontations with corrupt officials to a renewed commitment to her family.\n\n From the speaker's bio:\n\nKaren Sherman currently serves as President of the Akilah Institute\, Rwanda’s only women’s college\, leading its strategy\, growth\, and partnerships. Prior to joining Akilah\, Sherman was a senior executive at Women for Women International\, an organization that helps women survivors of war to rebuild their lives. Sherman also served as the Executive Vice President at Counterpart International\, an international nonprofit development organization that partners with local organizations to build inclusive\, sustainable communities in which their people thrive. Sherman has been featured on BBC\, CNBC Africa\, Al Jazeera English\, and Voice of America.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELED Wallace House Presents Recode’s Kara Swisher interviews former Facebook executive Alex Stamos
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED.\n\nGoogle\, Amazon\, Facebook\, Apple. A handful of tech companies have changed the way we live and built unprecedented industrial bases in the process. Their reach extends far beyond our pocketbooks into privacy\, individual liberties\, and the fabric of our democracy.\n\nIn August 2018\, Facebook’s chief security officer Alex Stamos announced he would leave the company following reports of disagreements with other executives over how to address the Russian government’s use of Facebook to interfere with the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Since his departure he’s advocated for the breakup of the tech giant and co-authored the white paper “Securing American Elections: Prescriptions for Enhancing the Integrity and Independence of the 2020 U.S. Presidential Elections and Beyond.”\n\nDo we really understand what we are giving away in exchange for speed and convenience? Do the tech giants understand\, or care about\, their responsibility in this digital age that they created?\n\nAlex Stamos is the former chief security officer at Facebook and is now director of the Stanford Cyber Policy Center’s Internet Observatory at Stanford University.\n\nKara Swisher is the co-founder and executive editor of Recode and host of the weekly interview podcast “Recode Decode.” She is also the co-executive editor of Code Conferences\, which feature prominent speakers from the digital industry. She is a regular contributor to The New York Times opinion pages and a Livingston Awards national judge.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by Computer Science and Engineering\, the College of Engineering\, the Center for Social Media Responsibility\, ITS and Dissonance at the University of Michigan and Duo Security.

SUMMARY:Fair / Festival:(CANCELLED) Palomitas Cineclub: Festival de cine presents La Soledad (La Soledad)
DESCRIPTION:La Soledad\n Jorge Thielen-Armand / Venezuela\, Canada\, Italy / 2016 / 89 min\n Spanish with English subtitlesWith José Dolores López\, Marley Alvillares\, Adrializ López\, Jorge Roque Thielen\, María del Carmen AgámezHandyman José lives with his family in La Soledad\, a dilapidated villa located in what was once among Caracas’ most affluent neighborhoods. After learning that the villa’s owners are planning to sell the estate\, José seeks any solution that might keep his six-year-old daughter from growing up in Caracas’ crime-sodden slums. Might that fabled treasure supposedly hidden in La Soledad’s walls offer José’s family a chance at a better life?Jorge Thielen Armand’s feature debut carves fiction from reality: La Soledad was once his family’s home\; this story is true\, acted out by the people who lived it. La Soledad looks beyond the headlines and gives a voice to those affected by contemporary Venezuela’s inner turmoil. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELLED - 2020 Dr. Berj H. Haidostian Annual Distinguished Lecture | David Ohannessian and the Armenian Ceramics of Jerusalem
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, and due to unforeseen circumstances\, this event has been cancelled.\n\nIn 1919\, David Ohannessian founded the art of Armenian ceramics in Jerusalem\, where his work and that of his followers is now celebrated as a local treasure. Born in an isolated Anatolian mountain village\, Ohannessian mastered a centuries-old art form in Kütahya\, witnessed the rise of violent nationalism in the waning years of the Ottoman Empire\, endured arrest and deportation in the Armenian Genocide\, founded a new tradition in Jerusalem under the British Mandate\, and spent his final years\, uprooted once again\, in Cairo and Beirut.\n \nMs. Moughalian will detail the lineage of her grandfather David Ohannessian’s ceramic tradition and document the critical roles his deportation and his own agency played in its transfer—aspects of the story obscured in the art historical narrative. She will speak about the process of coming to terms with her family’s past\, the ways in which that served as an impetus to excavate and reconstruct her grandfather’s history through archival research\, and the importance of preserving the stories of peoples displaced through migration.\n \nSato Moughalian is the author of Feast of Ashes: The Life and Art of David Ohannessian (Redwood Press/Stanford University Press\, 2019). She is also an award-winning flutist in New York City and Artistic Director of Perspectives Ensemble\, founded in 1993 at Columbia University to explore and contextualize works of composers and visual artists. She serves as principal flutist of the American Modern Ensemble and Gotham Chamber Opera\; guest flutist with groups including Imani Winds\, American Ballet Theatre\, American Symphony Orchestras\, and the Orquestra Sinfonico do Estado São Paulo\, Brazil. She can be heard on more than thirty chamber music recordings for Sony Classics\, BIS\, Naxos\, as well as on YouTube\, Spotify\, and other major music platforms. Since 2007\, Ms. Moughalian has traveled to Turkey\, England\, Israel\, Palestine\, and France to uncover her grandfather’s traces\, has published articles\, and gives talks on the genesis of Jerusalem's Armenian ceramic art.\n \nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.\n\nPhoto shift: Drying pottery on the terrace of Dome of the Rock Tiles\, Via Dolorosa\, Jerusalem c. 1922.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Dustbowl Revival w/ Smooth Hound Smith
DESCRIPTION:The Dustbowl Revival has always been about pushing the boundaries of what American roots music can be. In many ways\, they could have continued creating joyful\, booty-shaking songs and cut-to-heart folk-rock ballads that lift up their transcendent live shows—and mining new energetic material from the place where folk music\, funk\, and soul meet. But the band’s newest album\, \"Is It You\, Is It Me\,\" is something different entirely. Produced by Sam Kassirer [Lake Street Dive\, Josh Ritter] and engineered by Brian Joseph [Bon Iver\, Sufjan Stevens]\, it represents the latest stage in a band that never stops evolving and refuses to stand still. The album tackles uneasy topics—often where the political feels personal\, especially in the defiant \"Get Rid of You\,\" which was inspired by the student activists who emerged from the tragic Parkland High School shooting in Florida. The ominous driving brass groove of \"Enemy\" hones in on a painful generational split between a daughter and her parents who may have voted in a tyrant\, and have become strangers to her. This yearning search for common ground pervades the record as a whole.
