DESCRIPTION:Ixcanúl\, Volcán (Ixcanúl\, Volcano)In Maya and Spanish with English subtitlesWith María Mercedes Coroy\, María Telón\, Manuel Antún\, Justo Lorenzo\, Marvin CoroyGUATEMALA’S OFFICIAL ENTRY TO THE ACADEMY AWARDS®The brilliant debut by Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante is a mesmerizing fusion of fact and fable\, a dreamlike depiction of the daily lives of Kaqchikel speaking Mayans on a coffee plantation at the base of an active volcano. Immersing us in its characters’ customs and beliefs\, Ixcanul chronicles with unblinking realism\, a disappearing tradition and a disappearing people.Maria\, a 17-year-old Mayan girl\, lives and works with her parents on a coffee plantation in the foothills of an active volcano in Guatemala. An arranged marriage awaits her: her parents have promised her to Ignacio\, the plantation overseer. But Maria doesn’t sit back and accept her destiny.Pepe\, a young coffee cutter who plans to migrate to the USA becomes her possible way out. Maria seduces Pepe in order to run away with him\, but after promises and clandestine meetings\, Pepe takes off\, leaving her pregnant\, alone and in disgrace. There’s no time to lose for Maria’s mother\, who thinks abortion is the only solution. Yet despite her mother’s ancestral knowledge\, the baby remains\, “destined to live.”But destiny has more in store for Maria: a snakebite forces them to leave immediately in search of a hospital. The modern world Maria has so dreamt about will save her life\, but at what price… Palomitas Cineclub Winter 2020 Film Festival The Palomitas Cineclub\, organized by graduate students of the Romance Languages & Literatures Department\, has been awarded a Spanish Film Club Festival Grant* to sponsor public screenings of contemporary Iberoamerican film at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Fair / Festival:(CANCELLED) Palomitas Cineclub: Festival de cine presents La Soledad (La Soledad)
DESCRIPTION:La Soledad\n Jorge Thielen-Armand / Venezuela\, Canada\, Italy / 2016 / 89 min\n Spanish with English subtitlesWith José Dolores López\, Marley Alvillares\, Adrializ López\, Jorge Roque Thielen\, María del Carmen AgámezHandyman José lives with his family in La Soledad\, a dilapidated villa located in what was once among Caracas’ most affluent neighborhoods. After learning that the villa’s owners are planning to sell the estate\, José seeks any solution that might keep his six-year-old daughter from growing up in Caracas’ crime-sodden slums. Might that fabled treasure supposedly hidden in La Soledad’s walls offer José’s family a chance at a better life?Jorge Thielen Armand’s feature debut carves fiction from reality: La Soledad was once his family’s home\; this story is true\, acted out by the people who lived it. La Soledad looks beyond the headlines and gives a voice to those affected by contemporary Venezuela’s inner turmoil. It is a magnificent feat of real-life storytelling—and a profound fusion of creativity and compassion. Palomitas Cineclub Winter 2020 Film Festival The Palomitas Cineclub\, organized by graduate students of the Romance Languages & Literatures Department\, has been awarded a Spanish Film Club Festival Grant* to sponsor public screenings of contemporary Iberoamerican film at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Flora Series: Woven Wire Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gouache Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Migrations: Fiber Notes from the Journey
DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:What We Hold\, What Holds Us: Homes & Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dear Stranger: Diaries for the Private and Public Self
DESCRIPTION:Through this exhibit\, we invite you to explore more than two centuries of diaries and diary-like documents from across the holdings of the Special Collections Research Center\, ranging from privately emotive to publicly informative\, from offering news reportage to depicting emotional processing\, and from factual to purely fictional. As you read\, consider how these journals embody elements of both private and public writing and the permeability between those spheres.\n\nDiaries\, journals\, daily planners\, notebooks: these ephemeral writings provide documentation of private lives and thoughts that can otherwise be difficult to find in the historical record. But does “private” necessarily imply unfiltered and unmediated? Many theorists have noted that the diarist is both writer and reader\, both private and public self. Therefore the content and form of diaries are created for future reading\, even if only by a future version of the self. The ambiguity of a diary’s audience is heightened in the case of published diaries. The form suggests that we\, as readers\, are accessing raw\, unfiltered thoughts\, but rounds of revision are common\, and often essential to clearly convey the intended meaning. Even further from our notions of authentic\, private writing\, fictional diaries are written solely to be published and read by the public\, but use the diary form to draw the reader into a particular relationship with the text and its protagonist.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Defense Dissertation: Variational and Time-Distributed Methods for Real-time Model Predictive Control
DESCRIPTION:Dominic Liao-McPherson\n\nCommittee:\nProf. Ilya Kolmanovsky (Chair)\nProf. Jing Sun (Cognate)\nProf. Alex Gorodetsky\nDr. Ken Butts (External\, Toyota)\n\nTime/location:\nMarch 19th 2020\, 10:00 AM \nGM Conference Room\, Lurie Engineering Center (4th floor)\n\nAutonomous systems are beginning to impact many aspects of society\, e.g.\, drones are becoming commonplace and self-driving cars are being developed on an industrial scale. These systems need to make complex decisions onboard\; mathematical optimization is a powerful paradigm for approaching these problems. In particular\, Model Predictive Control (MPC)\, a powerful optimization-based methodology for controlling constrained systems\, is an important enabler for autonomy. However\, solving optimization problems reliably\, in real-time\, using limited onboard computing resources\, is a difficult undertaking. \n\nThis dissertation addresses the development\, implementation\, and validation of several numerical methods for solving optimal control problems (OCPs) in real-time. First\, I present FBstab\, a novel quadratic programming algorithm with strong robustness properties that is easy to warmstart and can exploit the structure of optimal control problems. Second\, I introduce Time-distributed Optimization (TDO)\, a unifying framework for studying the system theoretic consequences of computation limits\, which I use to show that\, in some situations\, it is possible to recover the stability and robustness properties of optimal MPC despite limited resources. Finally\, I illustrate the applicability of these methods in the real-world through a diesel engine control example.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cullen Washington\, Jr.: The Public Square
DESCRIPTION:This expansive look at the work and concerns of emerging contemporary artist Cullen Washington\, Jr. pivots around the artist’s most recent series\, Agoras. The compositions explore the ancient Greek public space as a site for activated assembly and the heart of the artistic\, spiritual\, and political life of the city. UMMA’s installation is designed with an actual public square at its center\, complete with sound components featuring noted political and aesthetic discourse and surrounded by Washington’s soaring monumental collages. Works from four earlier series by the artist form the perimeter of the Museum’s largest special exhibition space. The artist describes his work as “abstract meditations on the grid and humanity.”\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, Candy and Michael Barasch\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, and the Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Department of History of Art\, School of Education\, Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, School of Social Work\, and Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reflections: An Ordinary Day
DESCRIPTION:UMMA’s second exhibition of Inuit art derived from the Power Family’s generous promised gift to the Museum in 2018 explores the relationship between the artist and the representation of everyday experiences. Through a selection of mid-century to contemporary Inuit prints\, drawings\, and sculptures that portray seemingly ordinary reflections of daily life along with daydreaming meditations\, the exhibition bridges the mundane and the fantastic. Together\, these artworks present a distinct imagery and a visual poetry culled from the day-to-day reality of life in the far polar north. The perspectives range from soaring gazes at the horizon to glimpses of commonplace social interactions. These contemplations reveal intimate connections among the artists\, their communities\, and their locale—a specific place and time composed of icy regions and vast seas and tundras. Reflections: An Ordinary Day takes visitors on a lyrical journey of the myriad spaces and routines within an Arctic landscape.\n\nThis exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art\, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Witness Lab
DESCRIPTION:Designed as a courtroom installation and a performance series by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan\, Witness Lab frames witnessing as a social and artistic act. The gallery collapses courtroom\, theater\, classroom\, laboratory\, and artist studio in order to study the relationship between performance and law. In hosting mock trials\, court transcript readings\, and trial advocacy workshops\, the artist investigates who performs the role of witness in our society and how that understanding may map onto the narrower legal definition of the role. The installation will host legal simulations from participating groups\, including the Trial Advocacy Society and the Oral Argument Competition from the University of Michigan Law School\, as well as the undergraduate team of the Collegiate American Mock Trial Association. Taking the role of courtroom sketch artists\, or court reporters\, students from the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design will observe and document the courtroom performances through drawing\, text\, photography\, and video.\n\nWitness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:EXCEL Open Lab: Supporting Your Students' Well-being
DESCRIPTION:As demonstrated by recent research\, private instructors are often the first line of defense when playing-related pain\, emotional\, or mental health concerns arise. Armed with information about common challenges students face\, a teacher might hold the key to unlocking their students' inner resources and connecting them with the appropriate healthcare provider to seek help. In this presentation you will learn basic tools you can use as a teacher (or future teacher!) such as noticing warning signs\, what types of questions to ask\, and when to refer to a medical provider.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Transportation Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:We build Lagrangian continuum models that utilize vehicle trajectory data obtained via V2X connectivity. These models are able to capture three important features of traffic flow: (i) the propagation of congestions in time\, (ii) the propagation of congestions in space\, (iii) the string instability/stability\, that is\, the amplification/decay of traffic waves while having only three tunable parameters. These models also enable us to study the large-scale impact of connected automated vehicles on traffic flow control.\n\nGabor Orosz is an Associate Professor for the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Michigan. Gabor's research interests include Nonlinear dynamics and control\, time-delay systems\, networks and complex systems\, dynamics and control of connected vehicles\, ground robots and autonomous vehicles\, neural networks\, gene-regulatory networks.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:*CANCELED* Departmental Seminar (899): Kayse Maass\, Northeastern University
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED.\n\nThe Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nThe seminar will be followed by a reception in the IOE Commons (Room 1709) from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.\n\nTitle:\nAn Industrial and Operations Engineering Approach to Disrupting Human Trafficking\n\nAbstract: \nHuman trafficking is a prevalent and malicious global human rights issue\, with an estimated 24 million victims currently being exploited worldwide. A major challenge to its disruption is the fact that human trafficking is a complex system interwoven with other illegal and legal networks\, both cyber and physical. Efforts to disrupt human trafficking must understand these complexities and the ways in which a disruption to one portion of the network affects other network components. As such\, industrial and systems engineering models are uniquely positioned to address the challenges facing anti-human trafficking efforts. This presentation will discuss ongoing interdisciplinary anti-human trafficking efforts focusing on prevention\, network disruption\, and survivor empowerment. Specifically\, we will discuss 1) the adaptions to current network interdiction models that are necessary for adequately representing human trafficking contexts and 2) a budget-constrained optimization model that maximizes the societal value of locating additional shelters for human trafficking survivors.\n\nBio: \nKayse Lee Maass is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and leads the Operations Research and Social Justice lab at Northeastern University. She also currently holds a research appointment with the Information and Decision Engineering Program at Mayo Clinic and is the co-founder of the Trafficking Research for Action Collaborative. Dr. Maass’s research focuses on the application of operations research methodology to social justice\, access\, and equity issues within human trafficking\, mental health\, housing\, and supply chain contexts. Her work is supported by multiple National Science Foundation grants\, centers interdisciplinary survivor-informed expertise\, and has been used to inform policy and operational decisions at the local\, national\, and international levels.\n\nDr. Maass earned a PhD in Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) from the University of Michigan and completed her postdoctoral studies in the Department of Health Sciences Research at the Mayo Clinic. She is a recipient of multiple awards\, including: the INFORMS Judith Liebman Award\, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program Award\, and the INFORMS Section on Location Analysis Dissertation Award-Runner Up. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELLED: EIHS Lecture / Human Conditions Keynote: Towards A Decolonial Account of Chemical Exposures on the Lower Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is part of Human Conditions: An Eisenberg Forum.\n\nWhat might a decolonial understanding of chemical exposures look like? While concepts like the Anthropocene scale environmental violence up to the planetary level—treating the chemical pollutant and the human body as the same everywhere—this talk takes a non-universalizing approach to chemical violence and its relations to land and bodies. Focusing on the history of Canada's Chemical Valley and the world’s oldest running oil refinery\, this talk asks how the specificity of chemical exposures can be understood in relation to colonialism as well as Anishinabek and Haudenosaunee obligations to land on the lower Great Lakes. In so doing\, it makes the case for the need to rethink the assumptions of universalism and liberal humanism that undergird conventional environmental understandings.\n\nMichelle Murphy is professor of history and women and gender studies at the University of Toronto\, Canada Research Chair of Science and Technology Studies and Environmental Data Justice\, and Director of the Technoscience Research Unit. Her current research looks at chemical pollution and environmental data in Canada's Chemical Valley\, with a focus on the world's oldest running oil refinery which sits on the land of Aamjiwnaang First Nation. Murphy's most recent book is The Economization of Life (Duke University Press). She is Métis from Winnipeg.\n\nFree and open to the public. \n\nThis event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Advanced Manufacturing of Aerospace Composite Structures: Predicting Influence of Imperfections on Composite Material Performance.
DESCRIPTION:Paul Davidson \nAssistant Research Scientist \nAerospace Engineering \nUniversity of Michigan\n\nA review of future ideas for commercial aviation points towards four kinds of aircraft designs: high aspect ratio wing (HARW)\, blended body\, Urban Air Mobility (UAM)\, and supersonic vehicles. From a structural perspective\, these aircraft designs necessitate the use of advanced composites and manufacturing methods. Robotic systems like Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) technology for laying down composite material\, offers one such manufacturing method\, to address the future aviation needs. Even with advancements made in AFP technology\, there are issues still plaguing composite manufacturing\, namely imperfections. Imperfections refer to deviation from design intent and have ramifications on the performance of the structure. The identification of imperfections and subsequent rework/reject decision consumes about 20% of the total production time and is inconsistent. These inconsistencies in inspection and manufacturing are indirectly accounted for in a design\, by increasing safety factors\, thereby increasing the weight and cost of a structure.\nIn this talk\, an overview of the challenges posed in the manufacturing of composite structures\, as well as a framework to study the effect of manufacturing imperfections on material performance\, will be presented. An experimental-computational framework that utilizes a small number of controlled defect coupon tests to develop a validated high-fidelity finite element model will be described. The framework utilizes Kriging regression\, Support Vector Classification\, and analysis using the Monte Carlo method to determine the risk of defects on the composites. To conclude\, I will outline current research problems and opportunities for cross-collaboration between researchers in the areas of structures\, materials\, NDI\, robotics\, and data sciences.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nDr. Davidson is an Assistant Research Scientist in Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. He received his MS and PhD degrees from the University of Michigan. From May 2016 to August 2018 he was a Post Doctoral Research Associate in the Composite Structures Lab of the Aero& Astro Department at the University of Washington\, Seattle. From May 2013 to October 2015 he worked in the Composite Design and Analysis Lab of General Electric’s Global Research Center. He is also a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Materials Technical Committee\, and the vice-chair of Durability and Damage Tolerance (DaDT) Division of American Society of Composites (ASC). His primary research interests include composite mechanics\, specifically on the damage\, failure and fatigue of composite materials\, advanced manufacturing methods\, multi-scale analysis\, low velocity and high velocity impact damage\, and micro-mechanics.

SUMMARY:Other:The Wonderful World of Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM)
DESCRIPTION: In its simplest form\, SECM is a scanning probe technique in which a small- scale electrode is scanned across an immersed substrate while recording the current response. This response is dependent on both the surface topography and the electrochemical activity of the substrate. Consequently\, using an array of operational modes\, a wide variety of substrates and experimental systems can be characterized. The strength of SECM lies in its ability to quantify material flux from a surface with a high spatial and temporal resolution. It has been used in a variety of applications fields. \nWe will first describe the fundamentals of SECM\, including the required instrumentation and the principles of the most frequently used operational modes. Following this basic understanding of SECM principles\, we then move towards a comprehensive summary of the critical parameters for any SECM experiment. More specifically\, we will discuss in detail redox mediators\, probes\, and solvent systems that are used in SECM experiments. Finally\, we will discuss our recent applications of SECM with an emphasis on our work in the last five years related to material characterisation\, corrosion and batteries. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nJanine Mauzeroll (McGill University)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:POSTPONED: Of Victims and Villains: The Targeting of Muslim Women | Vivian R. Shaw Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Shaw Lecture has been postponed until further notice. We apologize for the inconvenience.\n\nExploring her identity as an immigrant Muslim woman on the front lines of civil rights and liberties in Michigan\, Rana Elmir will examine the well-organized Islamophobia industry and the relentless attacks on Muslim women who face unique challenges borne of both a presumption of guilt\, as well as the additional presumption of victimhood. Muslim women’s status as both villains and victims not only drives discrimination\, harassment and hate crimes\, but promotes cynical policy proposals designed to “save” Muslim women that are actually rooted in anti-Muslim bias. \n\nRana Elmir is the deputy director of the ACLU of Michigan and has devoted her career to storytelling\, action and activism. As part of the senior management team\, she works in conjunction with the ACLU’s legal\, legislative and development departments to increase understanding and appreciation of the Bill of Rights. Rana lectures often on anti-Muslim bias\, the importance of storytelling\, free speech and the intersection of race\, faith\, and gender. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Live Event Canceled - Shaka Senghor: Writing My Wrongs
DESCRIPTION:Live event canceled: To limit the potential spread of respiratory viruses and safeguard those at highest risk of catching COVID-19\, the University of Michigan has canceled all live events with estimated attendance of over 100 people. \n\nAs a result\, live Penny Stamps Speaker Series events will not take place as scheduled. When possible\, our weekly presentations will be available online: video presentations will be announced via email and on the Stamps website (https://stamps.umich.edu/stamps).\n\nShaka Senghor is a leading voice in criminal justice reform. His memoir\, Writing My Wrongs: Life\, Death\, and Redemption in an American Prison\, was released in March 2016 and debuted on The New York Times Best Seller list as well as The Washington Post Best Seller list. Writing My Wrongs chronicles Senghor’s personal experience with the criminal justice system after being sent to prison at age 19 on second-degree murder charges. An unforgettable tale of forgiveness and second chances\, Senghor’s book reminds us that our worst deeds don’t define who we are or what we can contribute to the world. Senghor’s story has inspired thousands and serves as a compelling testament to the power of hope\, compassion\, and unconditional love.\n\nSenghor is the recipient of numerous awards\, including the 2016 EBONY Power 100 list and the 2016 NAACP Great Expectations Award. Senghor was also a 2014 TED Prize finalist for The Atonement Project (a program that aims to promote healing and understanding between victims of violence and violent offenders)\, is a former MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow\, and is a current fellow in the inaugural class of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Community Leadership Network. He shares his story of redemption around the world through his company\, Shaka Senghor Inc.\, dedicated to shifting societal narratives through storytelling with deep social impact.\n\nSupported by the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan\, presenting the 25th Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners\, on view at the Duderstadt Center Gallery March 18–April 1\, 2020.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Slave Cooks and Roman Comedy: Resistance in the Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:Early Roman comedy\, dating to around 200 BC\, was written and performed by slaves and poor men for an audience that included slaves and poor people. These writers and actors took the old comic character of the slave cook and did something new\, in line with these plays’ general resistance to authority. This talk is illustrated by rarely-seen images of cartoon cooks contemporary with the plays\, juxtaposed with modern parallels from cookie jars to South Park’s Chef to Betye Saar’s “Liberation of Aunt Jemima\".\n\nContent warning: this talk will include discussion and display of images related to modern slavery and anti-black racism.\n\nLocation: Rackham Amphitheater (4th floor)\nNB: There are two spots for wheelchair users in the middle of the Amphitheater\, using the North Entrance.\n\nMarch 19th\, 5:30pm\nFree and open to the public\nReception to follow

SUMMARY:Performance:CANCELLED - Brian Vander Ark
DESCRIPTION:Brian Vander Ark is the lead singer of the Verve Pipe\, which became one of Michigan's biggest rock bands of the last decade with songs like the number-one hit \"The Freshmen.\" In 2001 he appeared as part of the band Blood Pollution in the Mark Wahlberg movie \"Rock Star.\" Then he lit out on his own\, selling all his possessions and rediscovering his love of performing. He has charisma to spare! On his studio albums\, plus several more or less official live releases (an Ark show is a good place to pick up the more obscure items)\, Brian has taken up personal themes of family\, love\, and loss. The Grand Rapids Press hails Brian's way of \"adroitly meshing acoustic grace with penetrating rock and pop power.\" Oh\, and his name means \"of The Ark\" in Dutch. If you haven't seen this rock legend's solo show yet\, what are you waiting for?
