SUMMARY:Fair / Festival:(CANCELLED) Palomitas Cineclub: Festival de cine presents La Soledad (La Soledad)
DESCRIPTION:La Soledad\n Jorge Thielen-Armand / Venezuela\, Canada\, Italy / 2016 / 89 min\n Spanish with English subtitlesWith José Dolores López\, Marley Alvillares\, Adrializ López\, Jorge Roque Thielen\, María del Carmen AgámezHandyman José lives with his family in La Soledad\, a dilapidated villa located in what was once among Caracas’ most affluent neighborhoods. After learning that the villa’s owners are planning to sell the estate\, José seeks any solution that might keep his six-year-old daughter from growing up in Caracas’ crime-sodden slums. Might that fabled treasure supposedly hidden in La Soledad’s walls offer José’s family a chance at a better life?Jorge Thielen Armand’s feature debut carves fiction from reality: La Soledad was once his family’s home\; this story is true\, acted out by the people who lived it. La Soledad looks beyond the headlines and gives a voice to those affected by contemporary Venezuela’s inner turmoil. It is a magnificent feat of real-life storytelling—and a profound fusion of creativity and compassion. Palomitas Cineclub Winter 2020 Film Festival The Palomitas Cineclub\, organized by graduate students of the Romance Languages & Literatures Department\, has been awarded a Spanish Film Club Festival Grant* to sponsor public screenings of contemporary Iberoamerican film at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Flora Series: Woven Wire Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gouache Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Migrations: Fiber Notes from the Journey
DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:What We Hold\, What Holds Us: Homes & Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dear Stranger: Diaries for the Private and Public Self
DESCRIPTION:Through this exhibit\, we invite you to explore more than two centuries of diaries and diary-like documents from across the holdings of the Special Collections Research Center\, ranging from privately emotive to publicly informative\, from offering news reportage to depicting emotional processing\, and from factual to purely fictional. As you read\, consider how these journals embody elements of both private and public writing and the permeability between those spheres.\n\nDiaries\, journals\, daily planners\, notebooks: these ephemeral writings provide documentation of private lives and thoughts that can otherwise be difficult to find in the historical record. But does “private” necessarily imply unfiltered and unmediated? Many theorists have noted that the diarist is both writer and reader\, both private and public self. Therefore the content and form of diaries are created for future reading\, even if only by a future version of the self. The ambiguity of a diary’s audience is heightened in the case of published diaries. The form suggests that we\, as readers\, are accessing raw\, unfiltered thoughts\, but rounds of revision are common\, and often essential to clearly convey the intended meaning. Even further from our notions of authentic\, private writing\, fictional diaries are written solely to be published and read by the public\, but use the diary form to draw the reader into a particular relationship with the text and its protagonist.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:CANCELLED: Human Conditions: An Eisenberg Forum
DESCRIPTION:Are we humans cooperative or warlike\, rational or delusional\, fixed or flexible? These questions have philosophical bite and political stakes. Indeed\, they always have. But recent work in a range of disciplines asks us to go deeper. What if “we humans” are more fiction than fact? If we can’t assume the stability of the human across time and place\, what happens to debates about human nature? Humanistic approaches including actor-network theory\, posthuman criticism\, and multispecies ethnographies challenge the idea of an autonomous human nature\, while scientific studies of organ development\, neuroendocrinology\, and the microbiome are revealing how much nature there is inside of us. Human Conditions explores these questions through a braided history of the human and environmental sciences.\n\nAll events take place in 1014 Tisch Hall unless otherwise noted. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:[POSTPONED] Toward Communities of Resistance: Rethinking Citizenship\, Migration\, and Belonging in Northeast India
DESCRIPTION:Coloniality and structural violence are crucially implicated in the precarious existence led by the vast majority of people in the global South. Communities denied of the “right to have rights” are engaged in fights to reclaim their lands\, their place in the world\, and often their very right to exist. Yet this fight implicates us all as we resist crisscrossing vectors of injustice from our different relations to precarity and (dis)placement. Drawing upon activist research in solidarity with communities fighting labels of “illegal immigrant” and state-sponsored crisis of citizenship in Assam (Northeast India)\, this talk will grapple with multiple dimensions of structural violence\, from its colonial underpinnings to ongoing peoples’ resistance against it. Anchored in decolonial\, women of Color\, and transnational feminist perspectives\, this participatory action research project documents social suffering in disenfranchised communities and explores creative and culturally meaningful pathways for decolonial resistance. Centering defiant voices of these communities-in-struggle\, the talk will illustrate the need to rethink dominant conceptualizations of citizenship\, migration\, and belonging\; in doing so\, troubling hegemonic ideas of “inclusion” tethered to nation state membership as well as illuminating possibilities for alternative collective imaginaries.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Livestream: Statistics Department Seminar Series: Professor Edward Ionides\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nInfectious disease transmission is a nonlinear partially observed stochastic dynamic system with topical interest. For low-dimensional systems\, models can be fitted to time series data using Monte Carlo particle filter methods. As dimension increases\, for example when analyzing epidemics among a collection of spatially coupled populations\, particle filter methods rapidly degenerate. We show that many independent Monte Carlo calculations\, each of which does not attempt to solve the filtering problem\, can be combined to give a global filtering solution with favorable theoretical scaling properties under a weak coupling condition. The independent Monte Carlo calculations are called islands\, and the operation carried out on each island is called adapted simulation\, so the complete algorithm is called an adapted simulation island filter. We demonstrate this methodology and some related algorithms on a model for measles transmission within and between cities. The COVID-19 situation will also be discussed.\n\nThis seminar will be livestreamed and is accessible at \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/252293050 \nProblems? SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cullen Washington\, Jr.: The Public Square
DESCRIPTION:This expansive look at the work and concerns of emerging contemporary artist Cullen Washington\, Jr. pivots around the artist’s most recent series\, Agoras. The compositions explore the ancient Greek public space as a site for activated assembly and the heart of the artistic\, spiritual\, and political life of the city. UMMA’s installation is designed with an actual public square at its center\, complete with sound components featuring noted political and aesthetic discourse and surrounded by Washington’s soaring monumental collages. Works from four earlier series by the artist form the perimeter of the Museum’s largest special exhibition space. The artist describes his work as “abstract meditations on the grid and humanity.”\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, Candy and Michael Barasch\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, and the Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Department of History of Art\, School of Education\, Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, School of Social Work\, and Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reflections: An Ordinary Day
DESCRIPTION:UMMA’s second exhibition of Inuit art derived from the Power Family’s generous promised gift to the Museum in 2018 explores the relationship between the artist and the representation of everyday experiences. Through a selection of mid-century to contemporary Inuit prints\, drawings\, and sculptures that portray seemingly ordinary reflections of daily life along with daydreaming meditations\, the exhibition bridges the mundane and the fantastic. Together\, these artworks present a distinct imagery and a visual poetry culled from the day-to-day reality of life in the far polar north. The perspectives range from soaring gazes at the horizon to glimpses of commonplace social interactions. These contemplations reveal intimate connections among the artists\, their communities\, and their locale—a specific place and time composed of icy regions and vast seas and tundras. Reflections: An Ordinary Day takes visitors on a lyrical journey of the myriad spaces and routines within an Arctic landscape.\n\nThis exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art\, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Witness Lab
DESCRIPTION:Designed as a courtroom installation and a performance series by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan\, Witness Lab frames witnessing as a social and artistic act. The gallery collapses courtroom\, theater\, classroom\, laboratory\, and artist studio in order to study the relationship between performance and law. In hosting mock trials\, court transcript readings\, and trial advocacy workshops\, the artist investigates who performs the role of witness in our society and how that understanding may map onto the narrower legal definition of the role. The installation will host legal simulations from participating groups\, including the Trial Advocacy Society and the Oral Argument Competition from the University of Michigan Law School\, as well as the undergraduate team of the Collegiate American Mock Trial Association. Taking the role of courtroom sketch artists\, or court reporters\, students from the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design will observe and document the courtroom performances through drawing\, text\, photography\, and video.\n\nWitness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:*CANCELED* IOE Lunch & Learn Seminar Series: Celine Chen\, Shenzhen University
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED.\n\n\nTitle:\nIncentivizing User Engagement in User-Generated Content (UGC) Communities: Evidence from Field Studies\n\nAbstract:\nFor many Internet consumers\, User-Generated Content (UGC) has replaced traditional media outlets and become the preferred channel for information acquisition\, entertainment and motivation of online expenditures. Maintaining users' loyalty and motivating them to be actively involved in monetization activities are some of the most critical challenges for UGC platforms' sustainable development. To deal with these challenges\, our research aims to investigate user engagement behaviors and the underlying mechanisms behind these behaviors in two different contexts\, an asynchronous UGC platform and a synchronous live streaming service. By collaborating with a large online community (Qiubai) and a popular live streaming platform (Remix) in China\, we combine a unique panel data analysis method on detailed user-level activity data with large-scale field experiments. Specifically\, we investigate the possibility of using nudges and digital badges to encourage user engagement in UGC platforms by examining the impact of extrinsic factors of UI on user behaviors. We capture and simulate the dynamics of user engagement state using a Hidden Markov model and Monte Carlo Layered Bayesian model and fit the data of users' engagement behavior under the social network structure using the Fixed Effect Poisson model. In our live streaming context\, we use variance analysis and linear panel data regression methods to analyze users' paying (tipping) behavior through manipulating audience size\, tipping amount and develop a panel vector autoregression (PVAR) model to examine the role of emotion in interactive and dynamic social settings. Our findings can help UGC communities better understand user engagement behaviors\, and thus provide theoretical and managerial implications for effective UGC marketing strategies to enhance users' loyalty and stimulate their active online engagement.\n\nBio:\nDr. Xingyu (Celine) Chen received her Ph.D. degree in Systems and Engineering Management from Nanyang Technological University\, Singapore\, in 2013. She is currently an associate professor and deputy head of the Department of Marketing\, College of Management\, at Shenzhen University\, China. Dr. Chen’s research has focused on online user behavior and social media marketing strategy. She has been publishing in a number of prestigious journals in her field\, including the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science\, International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing and Technology\, Behavior and Information Technology\, and Ivey Business Cases. Dr. Chen has received the University Outstanding Young Scientist Award in 2018\, College Best Teacher Award and MBA Best Teaching Award in 2016-2019. Her research has been funded by the Ministry of Education of China\, National Natural Science Foundation of China and Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province. Before joining academia\, she also worked as senior product manager at leading Internet firms\, ProperGuru and Mozat\, in Singapore.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELED: Whose Freedom of Speech?: Reflections on Power and Voice on the American College Campus
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS CANCELED.\n\nIn this talk\, Elizabeth Cole considers how a psychological understanding of power and voice are missing from current national conversations on free speech. Cole argues this omission constitutes a \"missing discourse\" (Fine\, 1988). Cole will discuss the ways that research on social norms\, gendered self-silencing\, stigma\, and activism complicate questions of whether to speak\, who gets the floor to speak\, and whose speech is considered legitimate by listeners. Intergroup dialogue pedagogy will be proposed as a remedy that holds promise\, but also entails important caveats. Cole concludes with a discussion of the implications of power and voice for debates about diversity\, inclusion\, and free speech on college campuses. After Cole's lecture\, she will open discussion for Q&A.\n\nElizabeth Cole is a Professor of Women’s Studies\, Psychology\, and Afroamerican & African Studies at the University of Michigan. She earned her doctorate at the University of Michigan in Personality Psychology and taught at Northeastern University before joining UM in 2000.\n\nLight refreshments will be served during the event.\n\nPlease RSVP at this link https://myumi.ch/yKrwN

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELED: EEB Museums Friday Seminar - Negotiating Academic/Tribal Research Agendas Involving Plants\, Properties\, and a Sustainable Future: UM as an emerging case of national significance
DESCRIPTION:The diverse ‘museum and museum-like’ collections of Tier 1 Research Universities\, as those at RMC and the Matthaei-Nichols\, have pivotal roles in the emerging protocols of Tribally-engaged research outside the biomedical sciences. At UM\, in addition to each unit’s intellectual and disciplinary agendas\, our Tribal engagements profoundly influence other core functions of the university: from undergraduate recruitment to donor and foundation relationships. Based on more than 15 years of relationship-building\, Michener has developed UM Matthaei-Nichols as a key partner in broadening and refocusing plant- and environmental justice-centered research relationships with Michigan’s Tribal partners. The ways forward include deepening engagement with the research divisions at RMC. By mutual agreement with Tribal partners\, little of this work has been discussed in public venues until recently. Today’s talk will focus on specific Tribally-engaged research activities at the Matthaei-Nichols\, their immediate objectives\, and the anticipated impacts for all partners.

SUMMARY:Presentation:CANCELLED: CCN Forum:
DESCRIPTION:Note: This event has been cancelled.\n\nEd Smith Neuroscience Award Talks\n\nTessa Abagis\n\nTitle: \nInvestigating external and internal distraction in adults with ADHD\n\nAbstract:\nAttention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often considered to be a disorder in children and adolescents but is in fact diagnosed in 2.5% of adults. Adults with ADHD experience poorer resistance to external task-irrelevant distraction (Forster and Lavie\, 2016) as well as to internal task-irrelevant distraction\, or mind-wandering (Franklin et al.\, 2017). Past work in the lab has determined a visual search task that displays robust performance differences between adults with and without ADHD due to singleton distractors. In the work I will discuss\, I have employed both eye-tracking and mind-wandering methods during this visual search task to evaluate how external and internal distraction affect task performance in adults with and without ADHD.\n\nLauren Grant\n\nTitle:\nOutliers Among Us: How to Identify and Deal with Extreme Data Points in ECoG\n\nAbstract:\nOutliers in experimental data can result in false positives (Type I errors) or false negatives (Type II errors) that dramatically change a researcher’s conclusions. Given the adverse effects of publishing such distorted conclusions (e.g.\, contributing to the replication crisis)\, many researchers try to identify and remove outliers before conducting their main statistical analyses. However\, there are a large number of outlier removal methods in the literature\, and it remains unclear which ones are most effective. Along these lines\, my recent work with reaction time (RT) data suggests that employing Sn – a robust estimator of scale – minimizes both Type I and Type II errors in subsequent data analyses\, relative to several alternative methods. However\, it is unclear whether Sn outperforms competing outlier removal methods for other data types. To test this hypothesis\, I conducted a series of simulations in the context of a typical ECoG experiment. Interestingly\, the median absolute deviation (MAD) – rather than Sn – was a highly effective method for dealing with extreme data points. Such findings reveal that there is no “one shoe fits all” solution to the problem of removing outliers. Rather\, the most effective method varies with the nature of the data itself.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Postponed: CEW+ Inspire Workshop: Launching Your Ship
DESCRIPTION:The workshop is from 2-3:30\, followed by a networking reception until 4:00. RSVP requested online at: cew.umich.edu/events/cew-inspire-workshop-launching-your-ship\n\nIn this workshop\, Woods will share experiences in creatively tackling problems and experiencing the joys of coalition building. Participants will be encouraged to think about how they approach situations where the ship they are in seems to be stuck in a port and is not going anyplace. Stuck in racism? Stuck in sexism? Stuck in certain social classes? What do you need to make your ship sail? Will a new captain do it? Or\, should you be the “Captain of your own fate?” Do you need a new destination? Are you bored with the direction you have been going? Are you going in circles? Do you need new perspectives\, new shipmates? Have you outgrown the mundane\, xenophobic habits of those in your circle? How can you develop healthy habits to move your life and community forward? Short\, interactive activities will assist each participant in using the ship metaphor to move forward in their life.\n\nWendy Ann Woods served the citizens of Ann Arbor from 2001 to 2007 as City Councilwoman. She is a strong advocate for affordable housing\, a vibrant downtown\, a balanced budget\, a living wage ordinance\, and corporate social responsibility. We—a group of faculty\, staff\, and students -- have become actively involved in the University’s strategic plan for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion and gained visibility across the university. For over two years\, the IWG was run through the Arab and Muslim American Studies Program in American Culture\; starting in Winter 2019\, the IWG is led by CMENAS housed in the International Institute. Our work is driven by issues brought to the group by any student\, staff\, or faculty member. The group strategizes as a collective to figure out the best approach to a given issue. Thus\, if you encounter a pertinent issue\, we want to know about it and we welcome your participation in the group. If you would like to join our email list or come to a meeting\, please contact Professor Samer Ali (samerali@umich.edu). \n---\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange. Contact (email or phone): Samer Ali\, samerali@umich.edu
