SUMMARY:Fair / Festival:(CANCELLED) Palomitas Cineclub: Festival de cine presents El abrazo de la serpiente (The Embrace of the Serpent)
DESCRIPTION:El abrazo de la serpienteCiro Guerra / Argentina\, Colombia\, Venezuela / 2015 / 125 minA breathtaking ethnographic odyssey through the heart of the Colombian Amazon\, Embrace of the Serpent  is the epic story of the first contact\, approach\, betrayal and\, eventually\, friendship\, between Karamakate\, an amazonian shaman\, last survivor of his people\, and two scientists that\, over the course of 40 years\, become the first men to travel the Northwest Amazon in search of a sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant. With nine different languages spoken during the course of the film\, this hypnotic meditation on the beauty of nature and effects of colonialism is presented with an uncommon sense of curiosity rarely seen. The crisp black and white photography captures the extraordinary landscapes with a haunting\, almost mythical sense of wonder\, while the balance between documentary-style realism and dreamlike mysticism makes for a truly poetic cinematic experience. ACADEMY AWARD® BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM NOMINEE Palomitas Cineclub Winter 2020 Film Festival The Palomitas Cineclub\, organized by graduate students of the Romance Languages & Literatures Department\, has been awarded a Spanish Film Club Festival Grant* to sponsor public screenings of contemporary Iberoamerican film at the University of Michigan. All films will be screened in their original languages with English subtitles. The series will be free and open to the public.Combining the funds from the Spanish Film Club Festival Grant* with additional financial support from within the university\, we will screen six contemporary Latin American feature films and documentaries between February 26 and April 3 on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm in the Modern languages Building\, 1220 (Lecture Room 1):Frágil equilibrio (Guillermo García Lopez\, 2016)\, Tempestad (Tatiana Huezo\, 2016)\, Ixcanul\, Volcán (Jayro Bustamante\, 2015)\, La soledad (Jorge Thielen-Armand\, 2016)\, El abrazo de la serpiente (Ciro Guerra\, 2015) and Pájaros de verano (Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego\, 2018). Each screening will be followed by an informal discussion session during which the audience is invited to discuss the film.We welcome everyone to participate in a space of cultural engagement where undergraduate and graduate students can come together to practice their language skills and partake in critical discussions of cinema. *The Spanish Film Club Festival Grant was made possible with the support of Pragda\, SPAIN arts & culture\, and the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain.

SUMMARY:Fair / Festival:(CANCELLED) Palomitas Cineclub: Festival de cine presents La Soledad (La Soledad)
DESCRIPTION:La Soledad\n Jorge Thielen-Armand / Venezuela\, Canada\, Italy / 2016 / 89 min\n Spanish with English subtitlesWith José Dolores López\, Marley Alvillares\, Adrializ López\, Jorge Roque Thielen\, María del Carmen AgámezHandyman José lives with his family in La Soledad\, a dilapidated villa located in what was once among Caracas’ most affluent neighborhoods. After learning that the villa’s owners are planning to sell the estate\, José seeks any solution that might keep his six-year-old daughter from growing up in Caracas’ crime-sodden slums. Might that fabled treasure supposedly hidden in La Soledad’s walls offer José’s family a chance at a better life?Jorge Thielen Armand’s feature debut carves fiction from reality: La Soledad was once his family’s home\; this story is true\, acted out by the people who lived it. La Soledad looks beyond the headlines and gives a voice to those affected by contemporary Venezuela’s inner turmoil. It is a magnificent feat of real-life storytelling—and a profound fusion of creativity and compassion. Palomitas Cineclub Winter 2020 Film Festival The Palomitas Cineclub\, organized by graduate students of the Romance Languages & Literatures Department\, has been awarded a Spanish Film Club Festival Grant* to sponsor public screenings of contemporary Iberoamerican film at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Fair / Festival:(CANCELLED) Palomitas Cineclub: Festival de cine presents Pájaros de verano (Birds of Passage)
DESCRIPTION:Pájaros de verano (Birds of Passage)Wayuu\, English\, and Spanish with English subtitlesWith Carmiña Martínez\, José Acosta\, Natalia Reyes\, Jhon Narváez\, Greider Meza\, José Vicente Cote\, Juan Bautista MartínezACADEMY AWARD® COLOMBIA’S SUBMISSION FOR BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILMCristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra\, the creative team behind Oscar®-nominated Embrace of the Serpent (also available for your SFC festival)\, return with this inspired mob epic for the ages — a completely fresh take on the origins of the Colombian drug trade\, far from Narcos and Escobar\, as told through the story of an indigenous Wayúu family. In the 1970s\, as an American-fueled marijuana boom hits Colombia\, farmers quickly turn into seasoned businessmen starting a narco-trafficking era known as “la Bonanza Marimbera.”In the Guajira desert\, one indigenous Wayúu clan takes a leading role. Guided by matriarch Ursula Pushaina\, the “Birds of Passage”—drug runners—face the constant risk of violence and incarceration from the outsiders in Northern Colombia. The cultural differences between the native population and the newcomers begin a brutal war that threatens to destroy the Wayúu way of life. As greed\, passion\, and honor blend together over the decades\, the family’s unity\, their lives\, and their ancestral traditions are all put at stake.A true story\, the visually striking Birds of Passage is as much a thriller as it is an anthropological study on the consequences of outside influences to indigenous traditions.Palomitas Cineclub Winter 2020 Film Festival The Palomitas Cineclub\, organized by graduate students of the Romance Languages & Literatures Department\, has been awarded a Spanish Film Club Festival Grant* to sponsor public screenings of contemporary Iberoamerican film at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Flora Series: Woven Wire Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gouache Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Migrations: Fiber Notes from the Journey
DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:What We Hold\, What Holds Us: Homes & Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dear Stranger: Diaries for the Private and Public Self
DESCRIPTION:Through this exhibit\, we invite you to explore more than two centuries of diaries and diary-like documents from across the holdings of the Special Collections Research Center\, ranging from privately emotive to publicly informative\, from offering news reportage to depicting emotional processing\, and from factual to purely fictional. As you read\, consider how these journals embody elements of both private and public writing and the permeability between those spheres.\n\nDiaries\, journals\, daily planners\, notebooks: these ephemeral writings provide documentation of private lives and thoughts that can otherwise be difficult to find in the historical record. But does “private” necessarily imply unfiltered and unmediated? Many theorists have noted that the diarist is both writer and reader\, both private and public self. Therefore the content and form of diaries are created for future reading\, even if only by a future version of the self. The ambiguity of a diary’s audience is heightened in the case of published diaries. The form suggests that we\, as readers\, are accessing raw\, unfiltered thoughts\, but rounds of revision are common\, and often essential to clearly convey the intended meaning. Even further from our notions of authentic\, private writing\, fictional diaries are written solely to be published and read by the public\, but use the diary form to draw the reader into a particular relationship with the text and its protagonist.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Livestream: Workshop on Variational Bayes Presented by Tamara Broderick\, Associate Professor\, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nBayesian methods exhibit a number of desirable properties for modern data analysis---including (1) coherent quantification of uncertainty\, (2) a modular modeling framework able to capture complex phenomena\, (3) the ability to incorporate prior information from an expert source\, and (4) interpretability. In practice\, though\, Bayesian inference necessitates approximation of a high-dimensional integral\, and some traditional algorithms for this purpose can be slow---notably at data scales of current interest. The tutorial will cover the foundations of some modern tools for fast\, approximate Bayesian inference at scale. One increasingly popular framework is provided by \"variational Bayes\" (VB)\, which formulates Bayesian inference as an optimization problem. We will examine key benefits and pitfalls of using VB in practice\, with a focus on the widespread \"mean-field variational Bayes\" (MFVB) subtype. We will highlight properties that anyone working with VB\, from the data analyst to the theoretician\, should be aware of. And we will discuss a number of open challenges.\n\nThis workshop is open to all and will be livestreamed at\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/610377170\nProblems? DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: Will be held via BlueJeans.\n\nBlueJeans Link: https://umich.bluejeans.com/478989984\n\nVolumetric muscle loss (VML) is the traumatic or surgical loss of skeletal muscle comprising 20-30% or more of the total muscle volume. By definition\, VML exceeds the muscle’s capacity for self-repair and results in persistent functional deficits. Significantly\, no treatment options exist that can fully restore native structure and function. To address the limitations of current treatments\, our laboratory has developed tissue-engineered skeletal muscle units (SMUs) as a novel treatment for VML repair. SMUs have shown promising regenerative potential in a rat VML model\; however\, limitations of rodent models necessitated transitioning our technology to a large animal (sheep) model.\n\n \n\nDespite substantial heterogeneity of muscle progenitor cell populations obtained from craniofacial\, trunk\, and limb muscle\, engineered skeletal muscle tissues are almost exclusively fabricated from cells derived from hindlimb muscle\, making the effects of cell source on engineered muscle tissue unknown. Thus\, we conducted a comparison of SMUs fabricated from muscle cells isolated from both craniofacial and hindlimb muscle sources and evaluated the effects of these cell sources on SMU structure and function. Specifically\, we showed that the semimembranosus muscle was the most clinically relevant muscle source for the fabrication of SMUs.\n\nWe also sought to develop a method to scale our SMUs to clinically relevant sizes. We developed a modular fabrication method that combines multiple smaller SMUs into a larger implantable graft. Consequently\, we successfully fabricated of one of the largest engineered skeletal muscle tissues to date while avoiding the formation of a necrotic core. To treat peripheral nerve injuries that often accompany VML\, we also developed engineered neural conduits (ENCs) to bridge gaps between healthy native nerve and the injury site. We used scaled-up SMUs and ENCs to treat a 30% VML in the ovine peroneus tertius muscle. After a 3-month recovery\, SMU-treated groups restored muscle mass and force production to a level that was statistically indistinguishable from the uninjured contralateral muscle.\n\nLastly\, we evaluated the efficacy of SMUs in repairing craniofacial VML. Despite reported differences in the regenerative capacity of craniofacial muscle compared to limb muscle\, prior to my thesis there were no models of craniofacial VML in either large or small animal models. Thus\, we introduced the first model of craniofacial VML and evaluated the ability of SMUs to treat a 30% VML in the zygomaticus major muscle. Despite using the same injury and repair model in both implantation studies\, results showed differences in pathophysiology between craniofacial and hindlimb VML. The fibrotic response was increased in the facial muscle model\, and there was tissue tethering and intramuscular fat deposition that was not observed in the hindlimb study. The craniofacial model was also confounded by concomitant denervation and ischemia injuries which was too severe for our SMUs to repair. This study highlighted the importance of balancing the use of a clinically realistic model while also maintaining control over variables related to the severity of the injury.\n\nOverall\, this work significantly contributed to the field of skeletal muscle tissue engineering by evaluating the effects of muscle source on the structure and function of SMUs\, created a modular fabrication method for tissue scale-up\, and introduced a new large animal model\, and a craniofacial model of VML. The success of this technology demonstrates its potential for treating clinical VML in the future.\n\nChair: Dr. Lisa Larkin

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ph.D. Defense: Tyler Gerhardson
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: Will be held via BlueJeans.\n\nLink: https://umich.bluejeans.com/924142541\n\nBrain pathologies including stroke and cancer are a major cause of death and disability. Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) accounts for roughly 12% of all strokes in the US with approximately 200\,000 new cases per year. ICH is characterized by the rupture of vessels resulting in bleeding and clotting inside the brain. The presence of the clot causes immediate damage to surrounding brain tissue via mass effect with delayed toxic effects developing in the days following the hemorrhage. This leads ICH patients to high mortality with a 40% chance of death within 30 days of diagnosis and motivates the need to quickly evacuate the clot from the brain. Craniotomy surgery and other minimally invasive methods using thrombolytic drugs are common procedures to remove the clot but are limited by factors such as morbidity and high susceptibility to rebleeding\, which ultimately result in poor clinical outcomes.\n \nHistotripsy is a non-thermal ultrasound ablation technique that uses short duration\, high amplitude rarefactional pulses (>26 MPa) delivered via an extracorporeal transducer to generate targeted cavitation using the intrinsic gas nuclei existing in the target tissue. The rapid and energetic bubble expansion and collapse of cavitation create high stress and strain in tissue at the focus that fractionate it into an acellular homogenate. This dissertation presents the role of histotripsy as a novel ultrasound technology with potential to address the need for an effective transcranial therapy for ICH and other brain pathologies.\n \nThe first part of this work investigates the effects of ultrasound frequency and focal spacing on transcranial clot liquefaction using histotripsy. Histotripsy pulses were delivered using two 256-element hemispherical transducers of different frequency (250 and 500 kHz) with 30-cm aperture diameters. Liquefied clot was drained via catheter and syringe in the range of 6-59 mL in 0.9-42.4 min. The fastest rate was 16.6 mL/min. The best parameter combination was λ spacing at 500 kHz\, which produced large liquefaction through 3 skullcaps (~30 mL) with fast rates (~2 mL/min). The temperature-rise through the 3 skullcaps remained below 4°C.\n \nThe second part addresses initial safety concerns for histotripsy ICH treatment through investigation in a porcine ICH model. 1.75-mL clots were formed in the frontal lobe of the brain. The centers of the clots were liquefied with histotripsy 48 h after formation\, and the content was either evacuated or left within the brain. A control group was left untreated. Histotripsy was able to liquefy the core of clots without direct damage to the perihematomal brain tissue. An average volume of 0.9 ± 0.5 mL (~50%) was drained after histotripsy treatment. All groups showed mild ischemia and gliosis in the perihematomal region\; however\, there were no deaths or signs of neurological dysfunction in any groups.\n \nThe third part presents the development of a novel catheter hydrophone method for transcranial phase aberration correction and drainage of the clot liquefied with histotripsy. A prototype hydrophone was fabricated to fit within a ventriculostomy catheter. Improvements in focal pressure of up to 60% were achieved at the geometric focus and 27%-62% across a range of electronic steering locations. The sagittal and axial -6-dB beam widths decreased from 4.6 to 2.2 mm in the sagittal direction and 8 to 4.4 mm in the axial direction\, compared to 1.5 and 3 mm in the absence of aberration. The cores of clots liquefied with histotripsy were readily drained via the catheter.\n \nThe fourth part focuses on the development of a preclinical system for translation to human cadaver ICH models. A 360-element\, 700 kHz hemispherical array with a 30 cm aperture was designed and integrated with an optical tracker surgical navigation system. Calibrated simulations of the transducer suggest a therapeutic range between 48 – 105 mL through the human skull with the ability to apply therapy pulses at pulse-repetition-frequencies up to 200 Hz. The navigation system allows real-time targeting and placement of the catheter hydrophone via a pre-operative CT or MRI.\n \nThe fifth and final part of this work extends transcranial histotripsy therapy beyond ICH to the treatment of glioblastoma. This section presents results from an initial investigation into cancer immunomodulation using histotripsy in a mouse glioblastoma model. The results suggest histotripsy has some immunomodulatory capacity as evidenced by a 2-fold reduction in myeloid derived suppressor cells and large increases in interferon-γ concentrations (3500 pg/mL) within the brain tumors of mice treated with histotripsy.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Recalling the Past\, Imagining the Future – Art and the Resurgence of Detroit
DESCRIPTION:From its high point of affluence and influence and a population of nearly two million in the 1950s\, Detroit suffered decades of devastating civil unrest\, economic crisis\, governmental corruption\, and the loss of nearly two-thirds of its population. Today - from bankruptcy and blighted neighborhoods - a new Detroit is arising\, enlivened by the creativity of artists whose work is transforming the city\, inspiring its residents\, and bringing about a sense of renewal and hope.\n\nDr. Marion “Mame” Jackson\, Professor Emerita\, Art History\, Wayne State University and The University of Michigan\, focuses on relationships between art and community and art’s role in preserving culture and nourishing spirit. She has spent years in the Canadian Arctic and Brazil studying art of ordinary people and its power to express culture and empower imagination. Her work has been supported by the National Endowment for Humanities\, Fulbright\, and the Social Sciences Research Council of Canada.\n\nThis is the fifth of a six-lecture series. The subject is The Power of Art. The next lecture will be April 2\, 2020. The title is: From the Grove to the Gallery: A Personal Journey with African Art.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cullen Washington\, Jr.: The Public Square
DESCRIPTION:This expansive look at the work and concerns of emerging contemporary artist Cullen Washington\, Jr. pivots around the artist’s most recent series\, Agoras. The compositions explore the ancient Greek public space as a site for activated assembly and the heart of the artistic\, spiritual\, and political life of the city. UMMA’s installation is designed with an actual public square at its center\, complete with sound components featuring noted political and aesthetic discourse and surrounded by Washington’s soaring monumental collages. Works from four earlier series by the artist form the perimeter of the Museum’s largest special exhibition space. The artist describes his work as “abstract meditations on the grid and humanity.”\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, Candy and Michael Barasch\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, and the Institute for the Humanities. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reflections: An Ordinary Day
DESCRIPTION:UMMA’s second exhibition of Inuit art derived from the Power Family’s generous promised gift to the Museum in 2018 explores the relationship between the artist and the representation of everyday experiences. Through a selection of mid-century to contemporary Inuit prints\, drawings\, and sculptures that portray seemingly ordinary reflections of daily life along with daydreaming meditations\, the exhibition bridges the mundane and the fantastic. Together\, these artworks present a distinct imagery and a visual poetry culled from the day-to-day reality of life in the far polar north. The perspectives range from soaring gazes at the horizon to glimpses of commonplace social interactions. These contemplations reveal intimate connections among the artists\, their communities\, and their locale—a specific place and time composed of icy regions and vast seas and tundras. Reflections: An Ordinary Day takes visitors on a lyrical journey of the myriad spaces and routines within an Arctic landscape.\n\nThis exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art\, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Witness Lab
DESCRIPTION:Designed as a courtroom installation and a performance series by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan\, Witness Lab frames witnessing as a social and artistic act. The gallery collapses courtroom\, theater\, classroom\, laboratory\, and artist studio in order to study the relationship between performance and law. In hosting mock trials\, court transcript readings\, and trial advocacy workshops\, the artist investigates who performs the role of witness in our society and how that understanding may map onto the narrower legal definition of the role. The installation will host legal simulations from participating groups\, including the Trial Advocacy Society and the Oral Argument Competition from the University of Michigan Law School\, as well as the undergraduate team of the Collegiate American Mock Trial Association. Taking the role of courtroom sketch artists\, or court reporters\, students from the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design will observe and document the courtroom performances through drawing\, text\, photography\, and video.\n\nWitness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELLED - CJS Noon Lecture Series | Queer Writing x Asia: Japanese\, Taiwanese\, and Asian American Literary Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately and due to unforeseen circumstances\, this Noon Lecture has been cancelled. We hope to reschedule this event for the 2020-21 academic year. \n\nMy paper begins by reflecting upon work by Li Kotomi (1989-)\, a Taiwanese author writing in Japanese about love between women and referencing both Japanese lesbian fiction and the iconic Taiwanese lesbian writer Qiu Miaojin (1969-1995). From Japanese and Taiwanese queer fiction\, I then pivot to queer Asian American writing such as that by Vietnamese American writer Ocean Vuong (1988-)\, who uses Qiu’s lines to open his book On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (2019). Through these texts\, I address how “queer” figures into discourses of ekkyō bungaku (border-crossing literature)\, tongzhi literary tradition\, and Asian American writing.\n \nGrace En-Yi Ting specializes in queer feminist approaches to Japanese literary and cultural studies. She is working on a book manuscript titled *Minor Intimacies: Queerness\, the Normative\, and the Everyday in Contemporary Japan*. From 2018-2020\, she is a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellow at Waseda University.\n \nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Other:Witness Lab Simulation: Oral Arguments with Professor Timothy Pinto's U-M Law Class
DESCRIPTION:This class interaction with the Witness Lab project is open to the public for observation. Seating is limited. Visit our project in action. \n \nDesigned as a courtroom installation and a performance series by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan\, Witness Lab frames witnessing as a social and artistic act. The gallery collapses courtroom\, theater\, classroom\, laboratory\, and artist studio in order to study the relationship between performance and law. Public programs\, classes\, and mock trial performances investigate who plays the role of the witness in our society\, and help us to understand truth within our legal system.\n \nIn her investigation of America’s courts\, McClellan’s practice engages K-12 and university classes across a spectrum of disciplines including law\, drama\, and anthropology\, among others. \n \nDue to the nature of the project\, the schedule for all Witness Lab events and simulations are subject to change without notice and changes may not always be reflected in online listings.\n\nWitness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELED: Orientalism and Monotheism: Renan on Judaism and Islam
DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled.\n\nThroughout the nineteenth century\, the birth of what one may call philologia orientalis and the discovery of the linguistic similarities between Sanskrit and European languages radically transformed the perception of the East\, much weakening the idea of a family relationship between Judaism\, Christianity and Islam. The case of Ernest Renan (1823-1892) is here emblematic. The lecture will survey Renan’s conception of Judaism and Islam\, through his invention of the category of “Semitic religions.” We shall reflect on its consequences on the study of monotheism among historians of religions\, as well as on the development of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in the last decades of the century. \n\nThere is both an accessible elevator and gender-neutral restroom on the first and second floor. If you have a disability that requires an accommodation\, contact judaicstudies@umich.edu or 734-763-9047.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Pricing and Worth
DESCRIPTION:Lack of a dense network of charging infrastructure is a major barrier to the growth of the plug-in electric vehicle market. Electric vehicle drivers value public charging availability since\, among other benefits\, it reduces range anxiety. This talk introduces drivers’ willingness to pay functions for public charging infrastructure availability\, conditional on electric vehicle type and range\, annual travel mileage\, energy prices\, vehicle efficiency\, and household income. At the same time\, public charging deployment creates investment opportunities for station operators and electric utilities. Hence\, in the last part of this talk\, operating costs for fast charging stations are estimated\, leveraging utility rates data across the United States. Cost mitigation technologies\, such as solar panels and energy storage\, are also identified.\n\nEleftheria Kontou is an Assistant Professor in the Civil and Enviornmental Engineering Department at University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign. Her research interests include transportation planning\, electrification and emerging vehicle technologies operations\, as well as transportation and energy sectors interdependencies.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Departmental Seminar (899): Siddhartha Banerjee\, Cornell University
DESCRIPTION:The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. In particular\, I will consider a general class of finite-horizon control problems\, where we see a stream of stochastic arrivals from some known distribution\, and need to select actions\, with the final objective depending only on the aggregate type-action counts. For such settings\, I will introduce a unified algorithmic paradigm\, and provide a simple\, yet general\, condition under which these algorithms achieve constant regret\, i.e.\, additive loss compared to the hindsight optimal solution which is independent of the horizon and state-space. The results stem from an elementary sample-path coupling argument\, which may prove useful for a larger class of problems in online decision-making. Time permitting\, I will illustrate this by showing how we can use this technique to obtain simple data-driven implementations of the above algorithms\, which achieve constant regret with as little as a single data trace.\n\nBio:\nSid Banerjee is an Assistant Professor in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering (ORIE) at Cornell\, as well as a field member in the CS and ECE Departments and the Center for Applied Mathematics. His research is on stochastic modeling and control\, and the design of algorithms and incentives for large-scale systems. He got his PhD in ECE from UT Austin\, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Social Algorithms Lab at Stanford\, as well as a technical consultant at Lyft. His work is supported by an NSF CAREER award\, and grants from the NSF and ARL.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:- CANCELED - CLASP Seminar Series: Dr. William Kuo of UCAR
DESCRIPTION:*NOTE: This week's seminar with Dr. Kuo has been canceled. To protect the health and safety of our communities and minimize the spread of the Novel Coronavirus COVID-19\, U-M is making changes to classes and events on our Ann Arbor\, Dearborn\, and Flint campuses.\n\nFor more information about the U-M response to COVID-19\, please visit https://publicaffairs.vpcomm.umich.edu/2019-novel-coronavirus-covid-19/\n\nWe are very pleased to welcome Dr. William Kuo of UCAR as part of the CLASP Seminar Series.\n\nDr. Kuo will give a lecture titled \"Impact of Radio Occultation Data on the Prediction of Tropical Cyclogenesis.\" \n\nAbstract: Tropical cyclones are one of the most devastating severe weather systems that are responsible for huge loss of lives and properties every year. Accurate prediction of tropical cyclogenesis by numerical models has been a significant challenge\, largely because of the lack of observations over the tropical oceans. The atmospheric limb sounding technique\, which makes use of radio signals transmitted by global navigation satellite systems (GNSS)\, has evolved as a robust global observing system. This technique\, known as radio occultation (RO) can provide valuable water vapor and temperature observations for the analysis and prediction of tropical cyclogenesis. Using the WRF modeling and data assimilation system\, we show that the assimilation of RO data can substantially improve the skills of the model in predicting the tropical cyclogenesis for ten typhoon cases that took place over the Western Pacific from 2008 to 2010. To gain insight on the impact of GPS RO data assimilation\, we perform a detailed analysis of the formation process of Typhoon Nuri (2008)\, and examine how the assimilation of the GPS RO data enables the model to capture the cyclogenesis. The joint Taiwan-U.S. COSMIC-II mission was launched in June 2019. It is currently going through check-out phase\, and will provide 5\,000 GPS RO data per day over the tropics when it is fully operational. This will provide a great opportunity for research and operational prediction of tropical cyclogenesis.\n\nPlease join us!

DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately and due to unforeseen circumstances\, this event has been cancelled.\n\nThis talk will outline the main pleasure theories developed in early and middle-period China\, before turning to discuss the institutions that the pleasure theorists decided must be put in place to foster productive and sustaining sociopolitical relations. It will also show that many of those institutions were put in place during the two Han dynasties\, and that the theorists adapted the Five Classics and early masterwork to justify a surprising series of innovations (including voting).\n \nMichael Nylan (Ph.D. '83) began her teaching career at Bryn Mawr College\, in the History Department\, with an affiliation with the Growth and Structure of Cities program and Political Science. There she began to learn political philosophy from Steven Salkever\, an Aristotle expert. After more than a decade at Bryn Mawr\, where she founded and led the major in East Asian Studies\, in 2001 she moved on to the UC-Berkeley History Department\, to work with graduate students in the company of one of the oldest and most distinguished of faculties of Chinese history. Now she writes in three main academic disciplines: the history of early China (roughly 300 BC-AD 300)\, early Chinese philosophy\, and the art and archaeology of China. She has an abiding interest in the use and abuse of history in the modern period\, as well as in the politics of the common good\, the \"logics of legitimacy\" inscribed in the implied social contracts forged at different times and places between the rulers and ruled at different times and places. She began research on pleasure theory in early China some eighteen years ago\, and because no one was writing on the topic at the time\, she took her time with the project\, to better understand the precise valences of the vocabulary and tropes the Chinese used to communicate their thoughts in a culture alive to pleasure. Her current projects include a reconstruction of a Han-era Documents classic\, writing a general-interest study on the \"Four Fathers of History\,\" and compiling a study of the politics of the common good in early China.\n \nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Live Event Canceled - Martha Colburn: Rip it Up
DESCRIPTION:Live event canceled: To limit the potential spread of respiratory viruses and safeguard those at highest risk of catching COVID-19\, the University of Michigan has canceled all live events with estimated attendance of over 100 people. \n\nAs a result\, live Penny Stamps Speaker Series events will not take place as scheduled. When possible\, our weekly presentations will be available online: video presentations will be announced via email and on the Stamps website (https://stamps.umich.edu/stamps).\n\nFilmmaker\, artist\, and animator Martha Colburn’s films examine the complex dynamics of contemporary life\, politics\, and society. Colburn works for years on a single project\, and her films result from intensive research and meticulously rendered stop-motion animations. Through photography\, collage\, painting\, and puppetry\, Colburn uses handmade aesthetics to create touching\, personal\, and unforgettable narratives. Her film Metamorfoza was included in the 2017 B3 Biennale of the Moving Image in Frankfurt\, Germany. Colburn is a Creative Capital grant recipient for Western Wild…or how I found Wanderlust and met Old Shatterhand\, a densely textured documentary about the making of a film about the famed German author Karl May. She is a frequent featured artist at the Sundance Film Festival\, where she initiated the “New Frontiers” film and video installation program in 2007 with her film Meet Me in Wichita. Colburn was also a featured artist at the opening of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York\, with a live performance of films and music. Her work is in the collections at MOMA and the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and her film Triumph of the Wild is permanently on show at the Military History Museum in Dresden\, Germany.\n\nCo-presented with the Ann Arbor Film Festival.\n\n

SUMMARY:Presentation:Postponed - Why I Fight
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed. Details TBA.\n\nWhy I Fight\, a theatrical adaptation of the 2019 Michigan Quarterly Review novelette by James Munro Leaf\, dramatizes the perils of being defined by a mental illness and being caught in the psychiatric system. It probes the presumption of labels and the complex dynamics of power\, dehumanization\, and abuse in clinical settings. Creative director Gillian Eaton and actor Malcolm Tulip\, faculty of the U-M School of Music\, Theatre\, and Dance\, engage several of their students in this production at the Residential College’s Keene Theater (dates TBA).\n\nBased on collaboration with the staff at the U-M Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program and other University colleagues\, a series of panels on mental illness and the arts follow each theatrical performance. Panelists will expand on themes in Why I Fight and invite conversation with audience members. Individuals and family members who live with mental illness\; U-M faculty conducting psycho-social\, public health\, and biomedical research\; mental health practitioners and community advocates\, including the arts community\, will explore the roles of creativity and nature for healing. The panels will be moderated by Dr. Melvin McInnis\, Director of the Prechter Program\, and other U-M mental health experts. A catered reception and information tables for resources in the arts and mental wellness organizations accompany each performance. (Please see the full list of panelists for more information).\n\nA series of associated events and workshops\, free and open to the public\, are scheduled for the weekend.

Ticketholders will receive more communication soon.**\n \nan operetta by Johann Strauss II\nDirected by Grant Preisser\, University Opera Theatre\nConducted by Kirk Severtson\, University Philharmonia Orchestra\n\nScheming and devious plans run amuck to culminate in a hilarious comeuppance in this re-imagined\, gender-bent take on Strauss's light-hearted comedy filled with lush Viennese waltzes. Willkommen\, Bienvenue\, Welcome to ... The Fledermaus--Berlin’s hottest cabaret! It’s New Year’s Eve 1932\, and Orlofsky’s club is preparing for its annual blow-out celebration. However\, more is afoot this year than usual as Orlofsky and Rosalinde\, the headline singer of the cabaret\, scheme to out Rosalinde’s playboy and apparently bi-sexual husband\, Gabriel von Eisenstein. With the aid of Eisenstein’s friend Dr. Falke\, Rosalinde feigns an illness\, clearing the path for Eisenstein to attend the party and indulge in his proclivities without his wife present. Unbeknownst to Eisenstein\, Rosalinde does\, in fact\, attend-in full male drag-with the aim to seduce her husband and confirm the rumors of his broadening predilections. Of course\, things never go quite as planned\, and as the party rages on\, champagne flows\, secrets are revealed\, and disguises come off\, leading to a lesson for some and a happy reconciliation for all.\n\nFull of pranks\, disguises\, and overall merriment\, Die Fledermaus is Johann Strauss II’s most loved operetta\, featuring the Hungarian “Csardas\,” and Orlofsky’s “Toast to Champagne.” This updated take explores themes of sexuality and gender identification\, as present in the 1930s as they are today. This production will be sung in German with dialogue in English and German and projected English translations.
