SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Earth Day at 50 Teach-Out
DESCRIPTION:On April 22\, 2020\, our world celebrates the 50th anniversary of Earth Day\, an annual event meant to bring people together from across the world in protest\, solidarity\, and conversation about how we can collectively fight for a sustainable and just world. In this Teach-Out\, you will explore the origins of Earth Day 1970 with student activists from Environmental Action for Survival (ENACT)\, an environmental student group from the University of Michigan\, whose efforts led to a massive “Teach-In on the Environment” which drew tens of thousands of people. This was just one of many teach-in events that took place in 1970 and kicked-off Earth Day as we know it.\n\n50 years later\, you are invited to this “Teach-Out” to engage in an intergenerational and interdisciplinary conversion about what sustainability means across different sectors\, disciplines\, and lived experiences. You will explore themes including global sustainability efforts\, climate change\, environmental justice\, and more\, to inspire you to take action on Earth Day and beyond. Together\, we will collectively develop visions for a sustainable\, just\, and peaceful world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Flora Series: Woven Wire Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gouache Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Migrations: Fiber Notes from the Journey
DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:What We Hold\, What Holds Us: Homes & Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dear Stranger: Diaries for the Private and Public Self
DESCRIPTION:Through this exhibit\, we invite you to explore more than two centuries of diaries and diary-like documents from across the holdings of the Special Collections Research Center\, ranging from privately emotive to publicly informative\, from offering news reportage to depicting emotional processing\, and from factual to purely fictional. As you read\, consider how these journals embody elements of both private and public writing and the permeability between those spheres.\n\nDiaries\, journals\, daily planners\, notebooks: these ephemeral writings provide documentation of private lives and thoughts that can otherwise be difficult to find in the historical record. But does “private” necessarily imply unfiltered and unmediated? Many theorists have noted that the diarist is both writer and reader\, both private and public self. Therefore the content and form of diaries are created for future reading\, even if only by a future version of the self. The ambiguity of a diary’s audience is heightened in the case of published diaries. The form suggests that we\, as readers\, are accessing raw\, unfiltered thoughts\, but rounds of revision are common\, and often essential to clearly convey the intended meaning. Even further from our notions of authentic\, private writing\, fictional diaries are written solely to be published and read by the public\, but use the diary form to draw the reader into a particular relationship with the text and its protagonist.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:POSTPONED to SPRING 2021. Behind Walls\, Beyond Discipline: STS and the Carceral State
DESCRIPTION:Science and technology lie at the heart of the carceral state. Matters of modern law and order rely on state-of-the-art technoscience as ideological and practical resources. Scientific theories about human behavior influence legal interpretations of guilt\, sanity\, violence\, and innocence. Biometric sensors\, cameras\, tasers\, and electronic ankle bracelets surveil\, discipline\, control\, punish\, and contain populations. This conference brings together an international group of science and technology studies (STS) scholars—humanists and social scientists who have developed analytic tools and perspectives for systematically understanding the reciprocal relationships between science\, technology\, politics\, and society—to rigorously address one of the major social justice and human rights issues of our times. \n\nThis is a two-day conference co-organized by the Program in Science\, Technology & Society and the Science\, Technology & Public Policy program. Keynote is cosponsored by the African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CANCELLED - Eleventh Annual International Graduate Student Workshop | Medicine\, Madness\, and Maladies of the Mind in Armenian Studies Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, and due to unforeseen circumstances\, this event has been cancelled.\n\nIn recent years\, the history of medicine\, mental illness\, and the literary\, anthropological\, and sociological studies of madness have gained a remarkable momentum internationally. Still\, there have been virtually no substantial studies of a premodern and modern understanding of medicine\, madness\, and maladies of the mind in Armenia and its Diaspora. This interdisciplinary workshop aims to interrogate the stories of both medical and psychiatric sciences as well as that of the concept of madness in Armenian political\, historical\, literary\, and cultural discussions in the past and present.\n\nThe workshop will focus on the histories of medicine and psychiatry and the portrayals of madness as a form of behavior\, marker of difference\, and tool of body politics across periods and geographies. The workshop organizers are interested in the broader history of medicine\, but they would like to draw particular attention to the historical and contemporary landscapes in which medical professionals sought to exercise their authorities over mental illnesses and the mind itself. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries\, tools and theories have provided medical professionals with renewed opportunities to intervene in the social\, political and cultural spheres with the shared objective of devising and implementing therapies of madness.\n\nIn this\, the workshop will initiate an inter-disciplinary conversation about the concept\, diagnosis\, treatment\, and social construction of “madness.” The goal is to consider new perspectives\, methodologies and cross-disciplinary frameworks that will put Armenian Studies in conversation with\, among others\, the growing fields of history of medicine\, science and technology studies. In the course of the workshop\, the hope is to call into question what was and is culturally defined as madness as well as medical and societal interventions to “cure” madness and “contain” the mad.\n\nTherefore\, this meeting will situate the notion of madness at the intersection of politics\, medicine\, literature\, sociology\, and anthropology and seeks to explore the changes in its definition and the underpinnings of perceptions of mental illnesses at critical junctures of history in Armenia and amongst its diasporic communities across the globe.\n \nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Master's Thesis Defense: Mingyang Wang
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: This event will be held via Blue Jeans. It will be linked before.\n\nBlueJeans: https://bluejeans.com/315155702\n\nObjectives\nWe have developed a novel anti-vascular technique\, termed photo-mediated ultrasound therapy (PUT)\, which utilizes nanosecond duration laser pulses synchronized with ultrasound bursts to remove microvasculature through cavitation. The objective of the current study is to explore the potential of PUT in removing cutaneous microvessels.\n \nMethods\nThe auricular blood vessels of two New Zealand white rabbits were treated by PUT with a peak negative ultrasound pressure of 0.45 MPa at 0.5 MHz\, and a laser fluence of 0.056 J/cm2 at 1064 nm for 10 minutes. Blood perfusion in the treated area was measured by a commercial laser speckle imaging (LSI) system before and immediately after treatment\, as well as at one hour\, three days\, two weeks\, and four weeks post treatment. Perfusion rates of 38 individual vessels from 4 rabbit ears were tracked during this time period for longitudinal assessment.\n \nResults\nThe measured perfusion rates of the vessels in the treated areas\, as quantified by the relative change in perfusion rate (RCPR)\, showed a statistically significant decrease for all time points post treatment (p<0.001). The mean decrease in perfusion is 50.79% immediately after treatment and is 32.14% at four weeks post treatment. Immediately after treatment\, the perfusion rate decreased rapidly. Following this\, there was a partial recovery in perfusion rate up to 3 days post treatment\, then followed by a plateau in the perfusion from 3 days to 4 weeks.\n \nConclusions\nThe study demonstrated that a single PUT treatment could significantly reduce blood perfusion by 32.14% in the skin for up to 4 weeks. With unique advantages such as low laser fluence as compared with photothermolysis and agent-free treatment as compared with PDT\, PUT holds potential to be developed into a new tool for the treatment of microvessels in the skin.\n \nKeywords: laser\; ultrasound\; anti-vascular treatment\; skin microvessels\; photo-mediated ultrasound therapy\n\nChair: Dr. Xueding Wang

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cullen Washington\, Jr.: The Public Square
DESCRIPTION:This expansive look at the work and concerns of emerging contemporary artist Cullen Washington\, Jr. pivots around the artist’s most recent series\, Agoras. The compositions explore the ancient Greek public space as a site for activated assembly and the heart of the artistic\, spiritual\, and political life of the city. UMMA’s installation is designed with an actual public square at its center\, complete with sound components featuring noted political and aesthetic discourse and surrounded by Washington’s soaring monumental collages. Works from four earlier series by the artist form the perimeter of the Museum’s largest special exhibition space. The artist describes his work as “abstract meditations on the grid and humanity.”\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, Candy and Michael Barasch\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, and the Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Department of History of Art\, School of Education\, Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, School of Social Work\, and Gerald R. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reflections: An Ordinary Day
DESCRIPTION:UMMA’s second exhibition of Inuit art derived from the Power Family’s generous promised gift to the Museum in 2018 explores the relationship between the artist and the representation of everyday experiences. Through a selection of mid-century to contemporary Inuit prints\, drawings\, and sculptures that portray seemingly ordinary reflections of daily life along with daydreaming meditations\, the exhibition bridges the mundane and the fantastic. Together\, these artworks present a distinct imagery and a visual poetry culled from the day-to-day reality of life in the far polar north. The perspectives range from soaring gazes at the horizon to glimpses of commonplace social interactions. These contemplations reveal intimate connections among the artists\, their communities\, and their locale—a specific place and time composed of icy regions and vast seas and tundras. Reflections: An Ordinary Day takes visitors on a lyrical journey of the myriad spaces and routines within an Arctic landscape.\n\nThis exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art\, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Witness Lab
DESCRIPTION:Designed as a courtroom installation and a performance series by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan\, Witness Lab frames witnessing as a social and artistic act. The gallery collapses courtroom\, theater\, classroom\, laboratory\, and artist studio in order to study the relationship between performance and law. In hosting mock trials\, court transcript readings\, and trial advocacy workshops\, the artist investigates who performs the role of witness in our society and how that understanding may map onto the narrower legal definition of the role. The installation will host legal simulations from participating groups\, including the Trial Advocacy Society and the Oral Argument Competition from the University of Michigan Law School\, as well as the undergraduate team of the Collegiate American Mock Trial Association. Taking the role of courtroom sketch artists\, or court reporters\, students from the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design will observe and document the courtroom performances through drawing\, text\, photography\, and video.\n\nWitness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Nuclear Energy Grand Challenge Pitch Competition
DESCRIPTION:Nuclear power is an essential tool in the fight against climate change—producing massive amounts of energy without any greenhouse gas emissions. In fact\, deploying nuclear power at scale worldwide represents the most efficient path to deep decarbonization. Despite this potential\, the nuclear power industry is hindered by social\, political\, and economic challenges in many parts of the world. The Nuclear Energy Grand Challenge represents a series of prize competitions organized by the Energy Impact Center to spur a new approach to nuclear power deployment on a time frame that can make a difference.\n\nThe first prize competition\, Reimagining Nuclear Waste\, is taking place over the Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 semesters in partnership with the University of Michigan. It was designed to advance the clean energy economy by engaging collegiate innovators and entrepreneurs to tackle one of the most unique challenges facing the nuclear energy industry—the perception of nuclear waste.\n\nThe nuclear industry has historically responded to calls against its “waste” by offering solutions around concentrating\, storing indefinitely\, and separating it from humans\, which only further—albeit counterintuitively—deepens the public’s distrust\, misunderstanding\, and wariness of the energy source at large. This prize competition represents the first of several efforts to flip the script on the byproducts of nuclear energy generation\, by identifying new commercial opportunities to transform nuclear “waste” from a liability into an asset.\n\nInterdisciplinary student teams were challenged to create technical business plan proposals to productize nuclear waste and incentivize the creation of new markets/uses that re-imagine how spent nuclear fuel can be utilized. At this public event\, the teams will present their proposals to a panel of judges.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELLED: \"Egon Schiele in the Clinic: Medicine\, Motherhood\, and the Biopolitics of Viennese Modernism\"
DESCRIPTION:“Pathological” was a damning term frequently applied to the visual art of Viennese modernism. Yet while the nudes of Klimt\, Schiele\, Kokoschka\, and others diverged sharply from the classical pictorial tradition\, they emerged alongside a contemporaneous trend: the increasing presence of medical imagery in the city’s visual vernacular. In the decades after 1900\, the bodies of working-class Viennese—women and children\, in particular—came to occupy a central place in films\, lectures\, exhibitions\, and literature. A medicalized gaze\, this lecture argues\, was fostered by a complex Viennese social network of physicians\, artists\, writers\, and politicians—all of whom staked their claims on women's bodies to vastly different ends.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Witness Lab Event: Behind Walls\, Beyond Discipline: Science\, Technology\, and the Carceral State: Gallery Discussion with Courtney McClellan: The Art & Science of Witnessing
DESCRIPTION:How do we arrive at an understanding of truth within our courts and justice system? What constitutes witnessing in our current tech and data saturated context? Courtney McClellan\, the 2019-2020 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence\, will discuss Witness Lab\, an installation and performance project that investigates who performs the role of witness in our society and examines the relationship between performance and law. She will be joined by an international group of science and technology studies (STS) scholars—humanists and social scientists who study the relationships between science\, technology\, politics\, and society—for an informal conversation that explores the role of science and technology in our understanding of witnessing and the construction of standards of truth.   Following the gallery discussion\, please join us for a film screening of El Panóptico Ciego (The Blind Panopticon) at 5:30 p.m. in UMMA’s Helmut Stern Auditorium.\n\nThis program is presented in partnership with the conference “Behind Walls\, Beyond Discipline: Science\, Technology\, and the Carceral State\,” co-organized by the Science\, Technology\, and Public Policy Program and the Science\, Technology\, and Society Program at the University of Michigan.\n \n\nWitness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:*CANCELED* Ethel V. Curry Distinguished Lecture: Prof. Tim Rice\, UCLA
DESCRIPTION:**In accordance with the Unversity-wide measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19\, this performance has been canceled.**\n\nBruno Nettl\, in his 1983 magisterial conspectus The Study of Ethnomusicology: 29 Issues and Concepts\, suggested that this field might best be understood as “the science of music history.” And yet it can seem that what makes ethnomusicology unique among music disciplines is its devotion to ethnographic fieldwork. So what is the role of history in this field of study? How do ethnomusicologists “do” history? Do they understand themselves as historians or ethnographers or both? Since the demise of comparative musicology in the U.S.\, most historical writing in ethnomusicology has been associated with particular ethnographic studies. After an examination of some classic examples of historical studies in ethnomusicology\, I discuss my recent attempt to skirt the problems of “universal history\,” avoided in ethnomusicology since the 1960s\, in my writing of what amounts to a history of the world’s music.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Witness Lab Event: Behind Walls\, Beyond Discipline: Science\, Technology\, and the Carceral State: Film Screening of El Panóptico Ciego (The Blind Panopticon)
DESCRIPTION:In August of 2014 a film crew stumbled across a century-old bureaucratic archive of the main men’s prison in Quito\, Ecuador.  Roof-high stacks of paperwork crammed into a nineteenth-century vault. This decaying archive recorded the daily institutional life of Ecuador’s oldest penitentiary\, Centro de Rehabiltacion de Varones\, Numero Uno Quito (CRSVQ1)\; originally titled Penal Garcia Moreno after the President who oversaw its construction between 1869 and 1874. El Panóptico Ciego (Blind Panopticon) documents an extensive array of official records hoarded during 139 years of prison functioning\, countless everyday items left behind by prisoners transferred without notice also became part of this archive\, and the prison itself came to constitute an archive of events inscribed on its walls.   2015. 52 min. In Spanish with English subtitles. Director: Mateo Herrera\; scriptwriter and ethnography: Jorge Núñez\; photography: Simón Brauer\; producer: Nathalie Moller\; and subtitles: Jennifer Fleetwood.     Followed by a Q&A with Jorge Nuñez.\n\nThis program is part of the conference “Behind Walls\, Beyond Discipline: Science\, Technology\, and the Carceral State\,” and presented at UMMA in connection with the project Witness Lab\, an installation project by Roman J. Ticketholders will receive more communication soon.**\n\nDepartment of Theatre & Drama\n\na play by Chay Yew\nDirected by Matthew Ozawa\n\nUsing dance\, drag\, drama\, and documentary elements\, A Beautiful Country chronicles 150 years of Asian-American immigration history. Miss Visa Denied\, a drag queen and performer\, is the narrator who guides the audience through the turbulent history of Chinese\, Filipino\, and Japanese people coming to America. SUMMARY:Performance:CANCELLED - Cedric Burnside
DESCRIPTION:Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict\, Cedric Burnside needs to cancel the April 10th performance and looks forward to returning to The Ark later this year to follow up on an incredible performance at Folk Fest. All ticket holders will receive a refund.\n\n\"My school was a juke joint\, from a kid till I was grown\, and blues is really all I ever known\,\" sings Cedric Burnside on his new album\, \"Benton County Relic.\" And it's no wonder. The 39-year-old\, though he's just back from a European tour\, still lives on several acres not far from the Holly Springs\, Mississippi\, home where he was raised by \"Big Daddy\,\" his grandfather\, the late singer/songwriter/guitarist R.L. Burnside\, whom Cedric famously played with\, just as his own father\, drummer Calvin Jackson\, did. Cedric was literally born to the blues\, more specifically\, the rhythmically unorthodox Hill country variant that emerged from Mississippi\, where he grew up surrounded (and influenced) by Junior Kimbrough\, Jessie May Hemphill\, and Otha Turner\, as well as Delta musicians T-Model Ford and Paul \"Wine\" Jones. Cedric has played and recorded with the North Mississippi Allstars (Luther Dickinson gave him his first electric guitar)\, Widespread Panic\, Jimmy Buffett\, Bobby Rush\, Hubert Sumlin\, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears \,and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. But beyond that\, he writes from personal experience\, and he's bringing traditional blues to a new generation.

SUMMARY:Performance:CANCELLED - Mapache with opener Tim Hill
DESCRIPTION:Mapache consists of Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci. Born and raised in Glendale\, California\, the duo offers breathtaking harmonies and a heartfelt sound that they dub cosmic West Coast Pop Americana. We make music that’s reflective of the landscape we grew up with in southern California\,” says Clay. \"It’s a big sweep of all the really rich influences you encounter around here: folk and psychedelic and country and Latin and rock and cowboy and Hawaiian. We’re drawing from a really deep well.\" Their sound is not an exercise in pop nostalgia\, but rather a distinctly independent link in a chain that stretches far behind and ahead of them. Mapache comes to Michigan with a brand new release\, \"From Liberty Street.\"
