In this Teach-Out\, you will explore the origins of Earth Day 1970 with student activists from Environmental Action for Survival (ENACT)\, an environmental student group from the University of Michigan\, whose efforts led to a massive “Teach-In on the Environment” which drew tens of thousands of people. This was just one of many teach-in events that took place in 1970 and kicked-off Earth Day as we know it.\n\n50 years later\, you are invited to this “Teach-Out” to engage in an intergenerational and interdisciplinary conversion about what sustainability means across different sectors\, disciplines\, and lived experiences. Gilchrist’s 50+ year career\, he has worked in photography\, graphic design\, print making\, drawing\, mixed media\, painting\, filmmaking\, fabric design and teaching. He is collected by patrons around the globe and is best known for his acrylic painted Mandalas\, totem animals\, and Sacred Geometry workshops on YouTube. At the age of 80\, Gilchrist is still going strong with numerous projects\, the most noted of which is his collaboration with Gabriel J. Cavazos\, founder of ARCOTU (Architecture of the Universe) Bio Design Engineers\, an architectural/engineering firm that bases all their design projects on Sacred Geometry principles.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Birds Fly In: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016\, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music\, spontaneously\, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

DESCRIPTION:Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work\, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity\, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights\, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds\, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms\, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

DESCRIPTION:Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops\, playgrounds\, houses and aerial views\, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales\, but rather to celebrate the color\, shape\, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Migrations: Fiber Notes from the Journey
DESCRIPTION:Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist\, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist\, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving\, crochet\, needle felting\, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

DESCRIPTION:Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter\, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years\, she has collected\, saved\, garbage-rescued\, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage\, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down\, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds\, the vessels that hold them\, and the totems that pay tribute to them\, all keep her company\, inspire her\, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:In the rapidly changing world of education today\, it is comforting to look back on the ‘good old days’ of the one-room school. Michigan has more one-room schools than nearly any other state. Some of them are still functioning. We will look at the architecture\, curricula\, rules for students and teachers\, and the role school played in the life of the community. We will focus especially on the Geddes Townhall School. In 1987\, the Townhall School was moved from its original site on Morgan Road in Pittsfield Township to the campus of Eastern Michigan University. Our Instructor\, Rochelle Balkam\, will guide us on the school’s journey as it made its way\, foot by foot\, to its present site. Attendees will be encouraged to share personal stories and memories of one-room schools. Rochelle Balkam taught U.S. state and local history and college prep government at Ypsilanti High School for 36 years.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been performed five times\, starting from the first year in 2001\, then in 2002\, 2005\, 2010\, 2015\, and now in 2020 for Shakespeare in the Arb's twentieth year. DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. DESCRIPTION:This expansive look at the work and concerns of emerging contemporary artist Cullen Washington\, Jr. pivots around the artist’s most recent series\, Agoras. The compositions explore the ancient Greek public space as a site for activated assembly and the heart of the artistic\, spiritual\, and political life of the city. UMMA’s installation is designed with an actual public square at its center\, complete with sound components featuring noted political and aesthetic discourse and surrounded by Washington’s soaring monumental collages. Works from four earlier series by the artist form the perimeter of the Museum’s largest special exhibition space. DESCRIPTION:UMMA’s second exhibition of Inuit art derived from the Power Family’s generous promised gift to the Museum in 2018 explores the relationship between the artist and the representation of everyday experiences. Through a selection of mid-century to contemporary Inuit prints\, drawings\, and sculptures that portray seemingly ordinary reflections of daily life along with daydreaming meditations\, the exhibition bridges the mundane and the fantastic. Together\, these artworks present a distinct imagery and a visual poetry culled from the day-to-day reality of life in the far polar north. The perspectives range from soaring gazes at the horizon to glimpses of commonplace social interactions. These contemplations reveal intimate connections among the artists\, their communities\, and their locale—a specific place and time composed of icy regions and vast seas and tundras. Reflections: An Ordinary Day takes visitors on a lyrical journey of the myriad spaces and routines within an Arctic landscape.\n\nThis exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art\, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

DESCRIPTION:Designed as a courtroom installation and a performance series by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan\, Witness Lab frames witnessing as a social and artistic act. The gallery collapses courtroom\, theater\, classroom\, laboratory\, and artist studio in order to study the relationship between performance and law. In hosting mock trials\, court transcript readings\, and trial advocacy workshops\, the artist investigates who performs the role of witness in our society and how that understanding may map onto the narrower legal definition of the role. The installation will host legal simulations from participating groups\, including the Trial Advocacy Society and the Oral Argument Competition from the University of Michigan Law School\, as well as the undergraduate team of the Collegiate American Mock Trial Association. Taking the role of courtroom sketch artists\, or court reporters\, students from the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design will observe and document the courtroom performances through drawing\, text\, photography\, and video.\n\nWitness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

The link will be posted below.\n\nBlueJeans: https://bluejeans.com/855683101\n\nHuman pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) differentiated into complex three-dimensional (3D) structures\, referred to as ‘organoids’ due to their organ-like properties\, offer ideal platforms to study human development\, disease and regeneration. However\, studying organ morphogenesis has been hindered by the lack of appropriate culture systems that can spatially enable cellular interactions that are needed for organ formation. Many organoid cultures rely on decellularized extracellular matrices as supportive scaffolds\, which are often poorly chemically defined and allow only limited tunability and reproducibility. By contrast\, engineered synthetic matrices can be tuned and optimized to mimic the embryo environment in order to enhance development and maturation of organoid cultures. Herein\, this work primarily focuses on using synthetic polymer matrices to investigate how the design of biomaterials can guide key interactions guiding stem-cell decisions for the reproducible generation and control of organoid cultures.\nMicroporous biomaterials comprised of synthetic polymer materials were shown to guide the assembly of pancreatic progenitors into insulin-producing clusters that further developed into islet organoids. The scaffold culture facilitated cell-cell interactions enabled by the scaffold design and supported cell-mediated matrix deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins associated with the basement membrane of islet cells. Furthermore\, when compared to suspension cultures\, the scaffold culture showed increased insulin secretion in response to glucose stimulus indicating the development of functional β-cells. By modifying the stage that cells were seeded on scaffolds from pancreatic progenitor to pancreatic endoderm\, islet organoids showed increased amounts of insulin secreted per cell. In addition\, seeding scaffolds with dense clusters instead of a single suspension minimized cell manipulation during the differentiation\, which was shown to be influential to the development of the islet organoids. An engineered insulin reporter further identified how mechanistic changes in vitro influenced function within individual cells by measuring insulin storage and secretion through non-invasive imaging.\nhPSC-derived lung organoids (HLOs) were also evaluated for in vivo maturation on biomaterial scaffolds\, where HLOs were shown improved tissue structure and cellular differentiation. Investigative studies demonstrated that scaffold pore interconnectivity and polymer degradation contributed to in vivo maturation\, the size of the airway structures and the total size of the transplanted tissue. Polymer biomaterials were also developed to modulate local tissue and systemic inflammation through local delivery of human interleukin 4 (hIL-4)-expressing lentivirus. Microporous scaffold culture strategies improve organoid complexity and exert fine control over the system using engineering solutions\, thus\, allowing the community to build more realistic organoid tools. Taken together\, the microporous scaffold culture demonstrates the feasibility to translate organoid culture to the clinic as a biomanufacturing platform.\n\nChair: Dr. Lonnie Shea

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Learning for Humanoid Multi-Contact Navigation Planning
DESCRIPTION:Humanoids' abilities to navigate uneven terrain make them well-suited for disaster response efforts\, but humanoid motion planning in unstructured environments remains a challenging problem. In this thesis we focus on planning contact sequences for a humanoid robot navigating in large unstructured environments using multi-contact motion\, including both foot and palm contacts. In particular\, we address the two following questions: (1) How do we efficiently generate a feasible contact sequence? and (2) How do we generate contact sequences which lead to dynamically-robust motions?\n\nFor the first question\, we propose a library-based method that retrieves motion plans from a library constructed offline\, and adapts them with local trajectory optimization to generate the full motion plan from the start to the goal. This approach outperforms a conventional graph search contact planner when it is difficult to decide which contact is preferable with a simplified robot model and local environment information. We also propose a learning approach to estimate the difficulty to traverse a certain region based on the environment features. By integrating the two approaches\, we propose a planning framework that uses graph search planner to find contact sequences around easy regions. When it is necessary to go through a difficult region\, the framework switches to use the library-based method around the region to find a feasible contact sequence faster.\n\nFor the second question\, we consider dynamic motions in contact planning. Most humanoid motion generators do not optimize the dynamic robustness of a contact sequence. By querying a learned model to predict the dynamic feasibility and robustness of each contact transition from a centroidal dynamics optimizer\, the proposed planner efficiently finds contact sequences which lead to dynamically-robust motions. We also propose a learning-based footstep planner which takes external disturbances into account. The planner considers not only the poses of the planned contact sequence\, but also alternative contacts near the planned contact sequence that can be used to recover from external disturbances. Neural networks are trained to efficiently predict multi-contact zero-step and one-step capturability\, which allows the planner to generate contact sequences robust to external disturbances efficiently.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nNASA Heliophysics research studies a vast system stretching from the Sun to Earth to far beyond the edge of the planets.  Studying this system – much of it driven by the Sun’s constant outpouring of solar wind – not only helps us understand fundamental infor-mation about how the universe works\, but also helps protect our technology and astronauts in space. NASA seeks knowledge of near-Earth space\, because\, when extreme\, space weather can interfere with our com-munications\, satellites and power grids. The study of the Sun and space can also teach us more about how stars contribute to the habitability of planets through-out the universe.  \n     Mapping out this interconnected system requires a holistic study of the Sun’s influence on space\, Earth and other planets.  NASA has a fleet of spacecraft stra-tegically placed throughout our heliosphere – from Parker Solar Probe at the Sun observing the very start of the solar wind\, to satellites around Earth\, to the far-thest human-made object\, Voyager\, which is sending back observations on interstellar space. Each mission is positioned at a critical\, well-thought out vantage point to observe and understand the flow of energy and particles throughout the solar system\, and all helping us untagle the effects of the star we live with.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Nicola Fox is the Heliophysics Division Director in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington\, DC. Until August 2018\, Dr. Fox worked at the Applied Physics Lab at the Johns Hopkins University where she was the Chief Scientist for Heliophysics and the project scientist for NASA’s Parker Solar Probe. Dr. Fox served as the deputy project scientist for the Van Allen Probes\, and the operations scientist for the International Solar Terrestrial Physics program. Fox received her BS in Physics and PhD in Space and Atmospheric Physics from the Imperial College of Science\, Technology and Medicine in London. She received an MS in Telematics and Satellite Communications from the University of Surrey.

Her family lived in the community that was commonly known as Black Bottom. She attended Detroit Public Schools. From high school\, she began taking art classes at Spelman College. After graduation\; life happened and her art work took a 35 year pause. No creating art whatsoever. When she retired\, she began again\, highlighting her culture through her art\; her looking glass into the past\, present and future of African-Americans with style and grace. Her work focuses on the environment of a mighty people. Working on collages allows her to blend bright colors and facial expressions that burst out of the scraps of paper that comes into its own. She works from the inside out. Though she works deliberately and consciously employing her “mixed-media style\,” her unconscious is the undisputed movement in charge. She was a 2016 and 2017 Bombay Sapphire Regional Finalist. She also won the 2016 Spirit of the City Ford Arts\, Beats\, & Eats Award.
