SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSEAS Virtual Viewing. *A Thousand Cuts*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”\n\nAbout the movie:\nOn June 15\, 2020\, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel\, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy\, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns\, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in\, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA\, MOTHERLAND).\n\nCosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Craft Lecture: Exploring the Revelatory Break
DESCRIPTION:In his *A Year With Swollen Appendices*\, Brian Eno talks about experiencing the crack in a blue’s singer’s voice or the static of a grainy film as being “the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.” If we accept as American writers that our medium\, the English language\, is one of the deadliest colonial weapons ever invented\, then its breaking becomes a political urgency. How do we undermine our language’s inherent corrosiveness\, turn a violent technology against itself to speak to things—doubt\, sex\, identity\, justice\, rage—it would rather us leave unspoken? This craft lecture will look at writers—including Robert Hayden\, Jean Valentine\, M. NourbeSe Philip\, and Jos Charles—who use revelatory breaks in idiom\, form\, and syntax to render with clarity what is too urgent\, too momentous\, for mere rhetorical speech. We will then apply those techniques to our own imaginings of what might be possible outside the inherited strictures of our inherently imperialist medium. \n\n\nKaveh Akbar's debut book of poetry\, *Calling a Wolf a Wolf* (Alice James Books\, 2017\; Penguin UK\, 2018)\, boldly confronts addiction and the path of recovery— traversing faith\, the self\, and the constant battle of alcoholism and sobriety.\n\nAkbar is also the author of a chapbook\, *Portrait of the Alcoholic* (Sibling Rivalry\, 2017) and the recipient of the Levis Reading Prize\, Pushcart Prize\, Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowship\, and Lucille Medwick Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America. Born in Tehran\, Iran\, he teaches at Purdue University and in the low-residency MFA programs at Randolph College and Warren Wilson.\n\nKaveh founded Divedapper\, a home for dialogues with the most vital voices in American poetry. With Sarah Kay and Claire Schwartz\, he writes a weekly column for *the Paris Review* called \"Poetry RX.\" Previously\, he ran *The Quirk*\, a for-charity print literary journal. He has also served as Poetry Editor for BOOTH and Book Reviews Editor for *the Southeast Review*. Along with Gabrielle Calvocoressi\, francine j. harris\, and Jonathan Farmer\, he starred on *All Up in Your Ears*\, a monthly poetry podcast. His poems appear in The New Yorker\, Poetry\, PBS NewsHour\, The New Republic\, Best American Poetry\, The New York Times\, and elsewhere. His next work\, *Pilgrim Bell*\, is forthcoming 2021 (Graywolf).\n\n\nThe Zell Visiting Writers Series brings outstanding writers to campus each semester. The Series is made possible through a generous gift from U-M alumna Helen Zell (BA ’64\, LLDHon ’13). For more information\, please visit the Zell Visiting Writers Program webpage: https://lsa.umich.edu/writers\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Theory: Cheating with (recursive) models (joint with Ran Spiegler and Yair Weiss)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nTo what extent can misspecified subjective models distort correlations? We study an “analyst” who utilizes models that take the form of a recursive system of linear regression equations. The analyst fits each equation to an objective empirical distribution. We characterize the maximal pairwise correlation that the analyst’s model can predict given a generic objective covariance matrix\, subject to the constraint that the estimated model does not distort the mean and variance of individual variables. We show that as the number of variables in the model grows\, the estimated pairwise correlation can become arbitrarily large\, regardless of the objective correlation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex\, tangled histories about the Great Lakes\, its watershed\, and the surrounding region. \n \nThrough the use of experimental photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and textile work\, these artists explore issues of water security\, pollution\, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together\, their work highlights the complicated personal\, political\, and economic relationships between people\, the water we depend on\, the lands we call home\, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.\n \nThese artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival\, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different\, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.\n \nWatershed includes many new\, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:\n A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River\, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility\; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes\; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan\; and\, Detroit-based musician\, artist\, and activist Sacramento Knoxx\, along with The Aadizookaan\, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. Additional generous support is provided by P.J. and Julie Solit and the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability and Department of English Language and Literature.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:AIG (the American Institutions Group)
DESCRIPTION:Younger Federal District Court Judges Favor Presidential Power\n\nTom Campbell\, Chapman University\nNathaniel T. Wilcox\, Appalachian State University \n\nAbstract :\nFrom 1960 to 2015\, opinions of US federal district court judges (trial judges) in cases involving challenges to executive branch authority show that these judges favor executive authority less as they age. We suggest that district judges know that elevation to the federal circuit court of appeals becomes increasingly improbable\, and hence have less reason to cooperate with the executive\, with advancing age. Political variables\, seniority of judges\, and other variables introduced as extra regressors do not reverse this main result\, nor does it appear to be the product of cohort effects or selection off the district court. When there are contemporaneous vacancies on their circuit courts\, district judges in the 11 state circuits (but not the District of Columbia Circuit) are also more likely to favor the executive.\n\nAIG is a group of graduate students and faculty who meet to discuss American institutions. For the first half of our meetings\, we talk about our research\, happenings in the field\, and politics\, and for the second\, we discuss a recently published article or working paper.\n\nTo join the meeting via Zoom\, email Jared Cory and Benjamin Lempert (blempert@umich.edu) for the meeting link.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Partially Composite Supersymmetry
DESCRIPTION:Partial compositeness can be used to explain the Standard Model fermion mass hierarchy and predict the sfermion mass spectrum in a supersymmetric model. It assumes that the Higgs and third-generation matter superfields are elementary\, while the first two matter generations are composite\, with a linear mixing between elementary superfields and supersymmetric operators with large anomalous dimensions. This gives rise to a split-like\, supersymmetric model that intricately connects the sector responsible for the generation of flavor with supersymmetry breaking to produce a unique sparticle spectrum. The inverted sfermion mass spectrum can be probed at future flavor violation experiments such as Mu2e or searches for the electron and neutron electric dipole moment.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NERS Colloquia: Professional Cultures and Inequality in STEM
DESCRIPTION:Can the culture of STEM help reproduce inequality? The professional\ncultures of STEM\, which give each discipline its particular “feel” and\nunite discipline members under a taken-for-granted system of meanings\nand values\, are not benign. Drawing from several NSF-funded survey and\ninterview-based studies\, I argue that these professional cultures can\nhave built within them disadvantages for women\, racial/ethnic\nminorities\, and LGBTQ persons in STEM. In this talk\, I will discuss\nthe role of three particular cultural ideologies—schemas of scientific\nexcellence\, depoliticization\, and the meritocratic ideology—in\nproducing these disadvantages. I will end by explaining why decisions\nthat partially rely on assessments of individuals’ “fit” with\nprofessional cultures are particularly important to critically examine\nfor their potential to contribute to inequality.
