SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSEAS Virtual Viewing. *A Thousand Cuts*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”\n\nAbout the movie:\nOn June 15\, 2020\, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel\, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy\, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns\, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in\, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA\, MOTHERLAND).\n\nCosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! This is a free event\, and all are welcome.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex\, tangled histories about the Great Lakes\, its watershed\, and the surrounding region. \n \nThrough the use of experimental photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and textile work\, these artists explore issues of water security\, pollution\, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together\, their work highlights the complicated personal\, political\, and economic relationships between people\, the water we depend on\, the lands we call home\, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.\n \nThese artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival\, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different\, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.\n \nWatershed includes many new\, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:\n A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River\, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility\; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes\; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan\; and\, Detroit-based musician\, artist\, and activist Sacramento Knoxx\, along with The Aadizookaan\, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. Additional generous support is provided by P.J. and Julie Solit and the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability and Department of English Language and Literature.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Embracing the Challenge: Redefining and Reaffirming CJS Community
DESCRIPTION:As we all face challenges wrought by the global pandemic\, racist violence\, along with economic and institutional upheaval locally and globally\, it seems important to come together to assess where we are and how we’d like to move forward. What should community look and feel like in the face of such unprecedented challenges? And how might these challenges encourage us to redefine and reaffirm habits of scholarly inquiry\, mutual respect\, worldly engagement\, and communal thriving? This inaugural meeting addresses these questions in conversation with students\, lecturers\, staff\, faculty\, and non-academic members of the CJS community.\n\nReginald Jackson is Associate Professor of premodern Japanese literature and performance at the University of Michigan. His research interests include medieval calligraphy and illustrated handscrolls\, Noh dance-drama\, contemporary Japanese choreography\, queer theory\, and critical race theory. He is the author of *Textures of Mourning: Calligraphy\, Mortality\, and the Tale of Genji Scrolls* (University of Michigan Press\, 2018)\, and *A Proximate Remove: Queering Intimacy and Loss in The Tale of Genji* (University of California Press\, forthcoming 2021). His newest research project examines the relationship between slavery and performance in premodern Japan\, drawing from black studies and Japanese studies to read beyond their respective disciplinary blind spots. His writing appears in *Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies\, TDR: The Drama Review\, Theater Survey\, boundary 2\, Asian Theatre Journal\, and Women and Performance: a Journal of Feminist Theory*. His scholarly pursuits are enriched by a devotion to illustration\, luthiery\, and playing electric guitar.\n\nZoom registration required here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_1amYTNlaQ8KYuiP7J6VFqA\n \nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CLASP Dissertation Defense: Yeimy Rivera
DESCRIPTION:Please join us via BlueJeans: https://primetime.bluejeans.com/a2m/live-event/dpawhccc.\n\nTitle: Investigating Nonequilibrium Ionization and Recombination Processes in Solar Wind and Transient Plasma\n\nAbstract: In this work\, I investigated the evolution of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and the solar wind by combining remote sensing\, in situ observations\, and nonequilibrium ionization modeling using the Michigan Ionization Code (MIC). The work investigates physical processes governing the plasma’s radial evolution and the injection of energy to the system. The aim of this thesis is to investigate low ionized charge states in CMEs and He+ in the solar wind to understand their origin and formation.\nThrough simulations of charge states with the MIC\, the modeling work reconstructed the thermodynamic evolution of several plasma structures within the expansion of a coronal mass ejection (CME) by examining heliospheric ion composition within the ejecta. The reconstructed CME contained rare\, low charge states\, which are often absent within CMEs\, along with typical highly ionized coronal plasma. Modeling results show that the source of the low ionized material in the CME measurements is from prominence material and are not a result of recombination from cooling of the plasma. However\, part of the prominence also exists in a highly ionized form. These results provide important constraints to the evolution of prominence material that is often observed at the Sun but rarely measured in situ.\n\nIn addition\, this study indicated the CME components experienced rapid\, continuous\, and non-uniform heating as they travelled away from the Sun. Motivated by these results\, I identified useful spectral lines to study the eruption with future solar telescopes. This study investigated the diagnostic potential of several spectral lines spanning the EUV to near-Infrared and ranging between chromospheric and sub-flare temperatures to enable a comprehensive examination of solar eruptions that can be coupled with in situ and nonequilibrium modeling. I present a list of recommended spectral lines along with a discussion of their diagnostic capability. Results show that several of the most observable lines will be within the planned observations of future solar telescopes\; Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST)\, and Upgraded COronal Multi-channel Polarimeter (UCoMP)\, and instruments on Solar Orbiter\, e.g. Spectral Imaging of the Coronal Environment (SPICE) and Multi-Element Telescope for Imaging and Spectroscopy (METIS).\n\nFurthermore\, I investigated the presence of singly ionized He in the solar wind\, that are outside of CME cores and pick up ions\, to determine their origin and formation mechanism using the MIC. Current ionization models of the solar wind cannot account for the enhanced density of He+ observed at 1AU\, therefore we reconcile the additional He+ through charge exchange of solar wind alphas and outgassed interplanetary dust neutrals. We find that charge exchange processes can be an important mechanism in the formation of solar He+ from alphas particles below 10-15Rsun\, and due to this\, may potentially shape ion densities for other species in the solar wind as well.\n\nFaculty advisors: Prof. Enrico Landi\, Assoc. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SEMINAR: \"Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion in Operations Research and Analytics: A Research Agenda for Scholarship\, Practice and Service\" — Michael P. Johnson
DESCRIPTION:The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nTitle:\nDiversity\, Equity and Inclusion in Operations Research and Analytics: A Research Agenda for Scholarship\, Practice and Service\n\nAbstract:\nDiversity\, equity and inclusion (DEI) refers to strategies and processes that enable organizations to become more reflective of and responsive to identities\, values and experiences of different stakeholder groups. Organizations committed to DEI may better fulfill their missions and improve the well-being of their stakeholder groups and of society at large. \n\nIn this talk\, I will explore the presence of DEI in OR/analytics through an assessment of the profession (the diversity of OR/analytics practitioners) and scholarship (published and emerging work that addresses DEI and related issues). My focus will be on traditionally underrepresented and marginalized groups and communities. I will discuss current and proposed initiatives to support the increased application of DEI principles throughout OR/analytics practice\, research and education. I will argue that infusing DEI and social & racial justice principles within OR/analytics can enable our society to become more equitable\, more just and more welcoming of people from diverse backgrounds\, identities and communities.\n\nBio:\nMichael P. Johnson is Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs at University of Massachusetts Boston. Dr. Johnson’s research focuses on developing decision models and decision support systems to improve operations and strategy design of nonprofit organizations and government agencies. His primary application areas are affordable and assisted housing\, community development\, climate change response\, and diversity\, equity and inclusion in the decision sciences. Dr. Johnson has published widely in academic journals of OR/analytics\, urban planning\, and housing policy. His most recent extended works include a lead-edited volume of curated papers\, including INFORMS Editor’s Cut: Diversity and Inclusion: Analytics for Social Impact (INFORMS\, 2019)\, a lead-edited special issue of European Journal of Operational Research on community operational research (Elsevier\, 2018) and a lead-authored book\, Decision Science for Housing and Community Development: Localized and Evidence‐Based Responses to Distressed Housing and Blighted Communities (Wiley\, 2016). His lead-authored book Supporting Shrinkage: Planning and Decision-Making for Legacy Cities (SUNY Press) will appear in Spring 2021. Dr. Johnson earned his PhD from Northwestern University in operations research in 1997 and his bachelor of science from Morehouse College in 1987.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CLASP Seminar Series: Prof. Rony Keppens\, of Katholieke Universiteit\, Leuven
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Rony Keppens\, of Katholieke Universiteit\, Leuven will give a virtual lecture as part of the CLASP Seminar Series. Please join us!\n\nThis will be a Zoom lecture. \nZoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/s/98089586308\nMeeting ID:	980 8958 6308\nPasscode:	188480\n\nTITLE: PROMINENT: unraveling the secrets of solar prominences and coronal rain showers\n\nABSTRACT: In the ERC-funded project PROMINENT\, we set forth to study the `coolest' part of the million-degree solar atmosphere: the condensations formed by thermal instabilities. These come in all shapes and sizes\, with the largest condensations forming prominences - clouds suspended magnetically against gravity\, one hundredfold cooler and denser than the atmosphere itself. Their formation\, internal dynamics\, and ultimate ejection into violent coronal mass ejections are routinely witnessed with modern solar observatories\, but they pose severe challenges to modelling efforts. I will present state-of-the-art magnetohydrodynamic simulations\, where the process of runaway condensations due to radiative losses is studied in unprecedented detail. The\nsimulations cover prominence scenarios as well as coronal rain showers\, where small-scale condensations repeatedly form and rain down in thermodynamically structured magnetic arcades. This solar analog of our own weather turns out to be ubiquitous throughout the solar atmosphere. Our simulations all use the opensource MPI-AMRVAC simulation toolkit [1\,2]\, where the grid-adaptivity is essential to zoom in on details that will be resolved by future observing facilities.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Safe and Adversarially-Robust Multi-Agent Systems
DESCRIPTION:Dimitra Panagou\nAssociate Professor\nAerospace Engineering\nUniversity of Michigan\n\nPlanning\, navigation and control for multi-agent systems have been fundamental topics of research with numerous applications in unmanned aerial vehicles and robotic networks. Despite significant progress over the years\, there are still open challenges due to constraints (in terms of state and time specifications)\, adversarial or faulty information\, environmental uncertainty and scalability. This talk will present some of our recent results and ongoing work on safe and adversarially-robust multi-robot systems. The proposed framework provides provably-correct and computationally-efficient solutions on the mission synthesis of multi-agent systems in the presence of adversarial attacks and spatiotemporal constraints.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nDimitra Panagou received the Diploma and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens\, Greece\, in 2006 and 2012\, respectively. Since September 2014 she has been a faculty member with the Department of Aerospace Engineering\, University of Michigan. Prior to joining the University of Michigan\, she was a postdoctoral research associate with the Coordinated Science Laboratory\, University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign (2012-2014)\, a visiting research scholar with the GRASP Lab\, University of Pennsylvania (June 2013\, fall 2010) and a visiting research scholar with the University of Delaware\, Mechanical Engineering Department (spring 2009).\nDr. Panagou's research program spans the areas of nonlinear systems and control\; multi-agent systems and networks\; motion and path planning\; human-robot interaction\; navigation\, guidance\, and control of aerospace vehicles. She is particularly interested in the development of provably-correct methods for the safe and secure (resilient) operation of autonomous systems in complex missions\, with applications in robot/sensor networks and multi-vehicle systems (ground\, marine\, aerial\, space). Dr. Panagou is a recipient of the NASA Early Career Faculty Award\, the AFOSR Young Investigator Award\, the NSF CAREER Award\, and a Senior Member of the IEEE and the AIAA.

SUMMARY:Performance:Cancelled - The East Pointers
DESCRIPTION:The East Pointers—fiddler/singer Tim Chaisson\, banjoist Koady Chaisson and guitarist Jake Charron—write about real life\, sketching out its joys and sorrows in vivid strokes. That palpable authenticity makes their instrumental tunes practically cartwheel and infuses their lyric-driven songs with poignancy. As a follow-up to 2015's internationally acclaimed\, JUNO Award-winning debut \"Secret Victory\,\" their new \"What We Leave Behind\" shares stories previously unheard but framed by a familiar context. The album reflects on the traditions of Canadian Celtic music\, where it comes from\, and what it means to the people\, but also strides in new directions. With a captivating balance between their traditional-sounding instrumental tunes\, and catchy radio-ready songs\, The East Pointers reach out with open arms to a wide range of listeners\, inviting them to discover a new love of folk music. They come to Michigan with a new release\, \"Yours to Break.\"
