Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

For a limited time, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”

About the movie:
On June 15, 2020, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA, MOTHERLAND).

Cosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

Abstract:
In this survey, I provide a unified definition of analogy-based expectation equilibrium (ABEE) for strategic environments involving multiple stages and private information. I discuss various alternative interpretations of the concept as well as how to use ABEE in practice. I review a variety of applications including two new ones related to speculative trading and personnel economics. I then discuss a number of alternative equilibrium concepts emphasizing the links and differences with ABEE. Finally, I discuss possible next steps in particular related to the endogeneization of analogy partitions.

Many efforts are underway to increase college student voting. This panel of college students will discuss what is happening at U-M, statewide, and nationally to get students registered to vote and committed to voting.

The panel will also discuss what motivated them to get involved with these efforts, what they have learned along the way, and how the pandemic has impacted their work.

The panel will be moderated by Edie Goldenberg, PhD, Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at University of Michigan.

Professor Goldenberg is currently the faculty advisor of Turn Up Turnout (TUT), a student organization on campus that works in a nonpartisan way to increase student voting at UM. TUT also works with other universities in the Big Ten Conference, with colleges around the state of Michigan, with more than 50 other universities across the country, and with a number of national organizations.

Previously, Dr. Goldenberg served as founder and faculty director of the Michigan in Washington Program (2004-16), Dean of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (1989-98), and Director of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy (1987-89)

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (September 11, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207565@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 11, 2020 11:00am
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists, women artists, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.

Support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS, STARTLING WORKS OF ART, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER

Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American, European, African, and Asian art from across media, sampling the Museum's remarkable, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston, Christo, Theaster Gates, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Do-Ho Suh, Kara Walker, and others, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed, but instead as an active, creative, sometimes startling source of material and ideas, open for debate and interpretation.

Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex, tangled histories about the Great Lakes, its watershed, and the surrounding region.

Through the use of experimental photography, painting, sculpture, and textile work, these artists explore issues of water security, pollution, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together, their work highlights the complicated personal, political, and economic relationships between people, the water we depend on, the lands we call home, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.

These artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.

Watershed includes many new, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:
A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan; and, Detroit-based musician, artist, and activist Sacramento Knoxx, along with The Aadizookaan, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. Additional generous support is provided by P.J. and Julie Solit and the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability and Department of English Language and Literature.

Digital information flows impact all human experiences. The proliferation of large, heterogeneous, and spatio-temporal data requires novel approaches for managing, modeling, analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing complex information. The scientific community is developing, validating, productizing, and supporting novel mathematical techniques, advanced statistical computing algorithms, transdisciplinary tools, and effective artificial intelligence apps.

Spacekime analytics is a new technique for modeling high-dimensional longitudinal data. This approach relies on extending the notions of time, events, particles, and wavefunctions to complex-time (kime), complex-events (kevents), data, and inference-functions. We will illustrate how the kime-magnitude (longitudinal time order) and kime-direction (phase) affect the subsequent predictive analytics and the induced scientific inference. The mathematical foundation of spacekime calculus reveals interesting statistical implications including inferential uncertainty and a Bayesian formulation of spacekime analytics. Complexifying time allows the lifting of all commonly observed processes (e.g., time-series) from the classical 4D Minkowski spacetime to a 5D spacekime manifold (e.g., kime-surfaces), where a number of mathematical problems remain to be solved.

We study the expansion of a cold, non-neutral ion plasma into the vacuum. The plasma is prepared by UV (355-nm) photo-ionization of Rb atoms in a magneto-optical trap. We report on the formation and persistence of shock shells in the Coulomb-exploding plasma, as well as external-field-induced plasma focusing effects. Simulated results from a trajectory model and a fluid model verify the formation of shock shells. The computational analysis allows us to calculate time- and position-dependent density, temperature, and Coulomb coupling parameter, reaffirming the presence of shock shells and strong coupling in our experiment. Among other insights, the analysis further reveals the time scale of disorder-induced heating, the build-up of pair correlations, adiabatic expansion, and ballistic cooling.

Mike Stengel
Senior Associate
AeroDynamic Advisory

The aerospace industry is no strangers to crises, be it economic downturns, oil price shocks, geopolitical events, or acts of terrorism. The industry has also faced outbreaks of disease as well, but COVID-19 has posed the most challenging circumstances in the entire history of the business. How did the industry respond in the wake of growing cases? How have airlines shifted into “survival mode” and what measures have they taken? How long is this hibernation period sustainable? What are the impacts on suppliers to airlines, like manufacturers and maintenance providers? What’s the outlook for the recovery, and what could the industry potentially look like on the other side? What does this mean for students looking to enter aerospace? What opportunities will arise, and which avenues will become more difficult? In this seminar, AeroDynamic Advisory Senior Associate Mike Stengel will outline the series of events that have characterized the COVID-19 outbreak, and the outlook for the aerospace industry.

About the speaker...

Mike Stengel is a Senior Associate at AeroDynamic Advisory and self-proclaimed aerospace industry geek. Over his consulting career, Mike has gained experience in over 50 client engagements focusing on strategy, market analysis, M&A/due diligence, technology, and customer satisfaction. Key clients that Mike has worked with have included aerospace manufacturers, airlines, maintenance providers, investors, and government agencies. Mike graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Aerospace Engineering, and is an FAA-licensed commercial pilot.

Joshua Davis - Ark Family Room Series (September 11, 2020 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/76060 76060-19661505@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 11, 2020 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Speaking or singing, the voice of Joshua Davis is a disarming instrument: weathered and warm, as capable of conjuring confessional intimacy on a global stage as it is of making a small room, well off the beaten path, resonate with startling urgency and power. Couple it with an earnest poetic sensibility, a boundless work ethic, and an uncanny gift for connecting with audiences spanning generations, and it’s no wonder that Davis is now poised at the brink of the sort of widespread recognition that typically passes right over such a humble troubadour.

Over the past twenty years, Michigan-based Davis has honed an impressive range of skills – songwriter, bandleader, guitarist, and vocalist among them – in the most honest possible fashion: night after night, song after song, show after show Davis simply delivered every performance as though his life depended on it. Investing himself in the American musical diaspora, he has explored the common thread connecting folk, blues, jazz, ragtime, and country forms – discovering his personal perspective as a composer in the process.
