SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSEAS Virtual Viewing. *A Thousand Cuts*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”\n\nAbout the movie:\nOn June 15\, 2020\, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel\, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy\, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns\, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in\, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA\, MOTHERLAND).\n\nCosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! SUMMARY:Exhibition:Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex\, tangled histories about the Great Lakes\, its watershed\, and the surrounding region. \n \nThrough the use of experimental photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and textile work\, these artists explore issues of water security\, pollution\, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together\, their work highlights the complicated personal\, political\, and economic relationships between people\, the water we depend on\, the lands we call home\, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.\n \nThese artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival\, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different\, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.\n \nWatershed includes many new\, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:\n A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River\, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility\; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes\; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan\; and\, Detroit-based musician\, artist\, and activist Sacramento Knoxx\, along with The Aadizookaan\, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. Additional generous support is provided by P.J. and Julie Solit and the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability and Department of English Language and Literature.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Book Launch & Conversation: The Moral Triangle
DESCRIPTION:The Moral Triangle: Germans\, Israelis\, Palestinians\nby Sa’ed Atshan & Katharina Galor\nIn conversation with Katharine Halls\n\nSeptember 17\, 2020\n9am (PT)\, 12pm (ET)\, 5pm (BST)\, 6pm (CEST)\n\nRegister here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ZesKGEgrTiuPDw5z4bLmsw\n\n*We are pleased to offer a 30% discount on online purchases of the book for registered participants*\n\nCo-sponsored by the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures\n\nBerlin is home to Europe’s largest Palestinian diaspora community and one of the world’s largest Israeli diaspora communities. Germany’s guilt about the Nazi Holocaust has led to a public disavowal of anti-Semitism and strong support for the Israeli state. Meanwhile\, Palestinians in Berlin report experiencing increasing levels of racism and Islamophobia.\n\nIn The Moral Triangle Sa’ed Atshan and Katharina Galor draw on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with Israelis\, Palestinians\, and Germans in Berlin to explore these asymmetric relationships in the context of official German policies\, public discourse\, and the private sphere. They show how these relationships stem from narratives surrounding moral responsibility\, the Holocaust\, the Israel/Palestine conflict\, and Germany’s recent welcoming of Middle Eastern refugees. They also point to spaces for activism and solidarity among Germans\, Israelis\, and Palestinians in Berlin that can help foster restorative justice and account for multiple forms of trauma. Highlighting their interlocutors’ experiences\, memories\, and hopes\, Atshan and Galor demonstrate the myriad ways in which migration\, trauma\, and contemporary state politics are inextricably linked.\n \nSa’ed Atshan is Assistant Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at Swarthmore College. As an anthropologist and peace and conflict studies scholar\, Atshan’s research is focused on contemporary Palestinian society and politics\, global LGBTQ social movements\, and Quaker Studies and Christian minorities in the Middle East. He is also the author of Queer Palestine and the Empire of Critique (Stanford University Press\, 2020).\n\nKatharina Galor is the Hirschfeld Visiting Associate Professor of Judaic Studies and Visiting Associate Professor of Urban Studies at Brown University. Galor worked as a field archaeologist in France and the Levant between 1988 and 2006 with a focus on ethnicity\, religious affiliation\, and gender. Since 2006\, her interests have shifted to encompass cultural heritage studies with a focus on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Publications include The Archaeology of Jerusalem: From the Origins to the Ottomans (2013\, with Hanswulf Bloedhorn) and Finding Jerusalem: Archaeology between Science and Ideology (2017).\n\nKatharine Halls is a PhD candidate in History at the CUNY Graduate Center and an award-winning translator of Arabic literature. She is also a co-founder and coordinator of the Jewish-Muslim Research Network.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SEMINAR: \"Outward Facing Optimization: Operations Research With Impact\" — Laura Albert
DESCRIPTION:This seminar is sponsored by the U-M INFORMS Student Chapter.\n\nThe Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nTitle:\nOutward Facing Optimization: Operations Research With Impact\n\nAbstract:\nGovernment programs spanning public safety\, transportation security\, and critical infrastructure protection must deliver essential services by managing risks such as health emergencies\, crime\, acts of terrorism\, and natural disasters. Doing so requires allocating resources in complex systems that span people\, processes\, vehicles\, and critical infrastructure\, where many decisions are interrelated.\n\nGovernment leaders and researchers have been studying how to design and operate public sector systems to manage risk for the last half a century. Although researchers have created a body of knowledge for supporting prescriptive and predictive decisions in the public sector\, public safety leaders must continually adapt to address new risks in budget-constrained environments. As a result\, many research challenges remain. \n\nIn this talk\, Dr. Laura Albert will discuss her research that studies how to design and operate public sector systems using optimization methodologies. She will discuss how she has connected theory and modeling to application in applications in the United States ranging from emergency medical services\, aviation security\, and critical infrastructure protection. She will also discuss how to engage policymakers and the public with research. \n\nBio:\nLaura Albert\, Ph.D.\, is a Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering and a Harvey D. Spangler Faculty Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research interests are in the field of operations research\, with a particular focus on discrete optimization with application to homeland security and emergency response problems. Dr. Albert’s research has been supported by the National Science Foundation\, the Department of Homeland Security\, the Department of the Army\, and Sandia National Laboratory. She has authored or co-authored 69 publications in archival journals and refereed proceedings. She has been awarded many honors for her research\, including the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) Fellow Award\, the INFORMS Impact Prize\, four publication awards\, a National Science Foundation CAREER award\, a Fulbright Award\, and a Department of the Army Young Investigator Award. She is a Department Editor for IIE Transactions and is on or has been on six other journal Editorial Boards. Dr. Albert has served on the INFORMS Board as the Vice President for Marketing\, Communication\, and Outreach and served as the Assistant Dean for Graduate Affairs in the College of Engineering at UW-Madison. She is the author of the blogs “Punk Rock Operations Research” and “Badger Bracketology.” You can find her on twitter at @lauraalbertphd.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:U-M Climate & Space Seminar Series:
DESCRIPTION:Named the U-M Climate & Space Alumni of the Year\, Dr. Shannon Brown\, principal technologist and the supervisor of the microwave instrument science group at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, will give a seminar on Thursday\, Nov. 17. A reception will follow the seminar\, which is part of the U-M Climate & Space Seminar Series. \n\nPlease join us! The talk will also be streamed live and recorded via Zoom. For details\, visit the CLASP Seminar Series webpage. \n\nAbstract:\nInstrument science bridges the fields of science and engineering and it’s where I’ve found myself since graduating from Michigan nearly two decades ago. The art is translating the discoveries scientists want to make into the instruments engineers can build (and launch into space). This talk will reminisce on my nearly two decades of research and instrument development of passive microwave radiometer systems at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.\n\nGetting from the tiniest nugget of an idea to a full-fledged science mission in space requires persistence\, agile thinking and a bit of luck. Space-based missions generally follow a familiar pattern\; the initial honeymoon period where anything is possible\, building hardware where nothing seems possible and finally science operations where no one expected what was possible. Each of these phases is unique\, immensely interesting and the instrument scientist is one of only a few project jobs that spans all three. I’ll share a mix of stories and science from inside the development of the NASA Juno mission and the US Space Force Compact Ocean Wind Vector Radiometer (COWVR) mission. Both of these missions had unique challenges. COWVR was a 2-year instrument development that took 10-years to get into space\, finally landing on the International Space Station in 2022. Juno had to be designed to survive the harsh Jovian environment. But once they reached their destination in space\, they have been changing our understanding of Jupiter and its moons and demonstrating revolutionary technology back here on Earth. Getting there is never easy nor follows a linear predictable path\, but that is what makes it so\ninteresting.\n\nShannon T. Brown is a principle technologist and supervisor of microwave instrument science group at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena\, CA. He received a B.S degree in Meteorology from the Pennsylvania State University and a M.S. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Michigan. He received a Ph.D. in Geoscience and Remote Sensing in 2005\, also from the University of Michigan under the advisement of Professor Christopher Ruf. His research interests include microwave radiometer instrument design\, calibration and algorithm development for spaceborne and airborne instruments. He has been involved with the spaceborne Topex and Jason Microwave Radiometers\, WindSat Polarimetric Radiometer and the Jason follow-on Advanced Microwave Radiometers on Jason-2/3\, Sentinel-6 and SWOT along with a number of airborne radiometers. He is the instrument scientist for the NASA Juno Microwave Radiometer and principal investigator for the US Space Force Compact Ocean Wind Vector Radiometer instrument that is deployed on the International Space Station.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reading and Q&A with Poet Eduardo C. Corral
DESCRIPTION:Eduardo C. Corral’s latest book of poetry\, *Guillotine* (Graywolf\, 2020)\, gives voice and depth to undocumented immigrants\, border patrol agents\, and scorned lovers through dramatic portraits of contradiction\, survival\, and deeply human\, relentless interiority.\n\nCorral is also the author of *Slow Lightning*\, which won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Competition. He’s the first Latinx poet to win this competition. Corral is the recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and the Hodder Fellowship and the National Holmes Poetry Prize\, both from Princeton University. He teaches in the MFA program in Creative Writing at North Carolina State University.\n\nPraised for his seamless blending of English and Spanish\, tender treatment of history\, and careful exploration of sexuality\, Corral’s poems hurtle across literary and linguistic borders toward a lyricism that slows down experience. Guillotine\, his second book\, traverses desert landscapes cut through by migrants\, the grief of loss\, betrayal’s lingering scars\, the border itself—great distances in which violence and yearning find roots. With extraordinary lyric imagination\, these poems wonder about being unwanted or renounced. What do we do with unrequited love? Is it with or without it that we would waste away?\n\n\nThe Zell Visiting Writers Series brings outstanding writers to campus each semester. The Series is made possible through a generous gift from U-M alumna Helen Zell (BA ’64\, LLDHon ’13). For more information\, please visit the Zell Visiting Writers Program webpage: https://lsa.umich.edu/writers\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. Copies of the readings and live\, high quality auto-captions/transcriptions will be provided at all events.
