SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Film Screening | Artist Spotlight Series: Gariné Torossian
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance to receive the streaming link and to attend the Q/A session with the film director: http://myumi.ch/ZQN9R\n\nThe film will be available for you to watch on your own from September 18 to 23.\n \n In her lush\, intricately constructed works\, Gariné Torossian explores film form\, hybrid film and video technologies\, and themes of belonging\, identity\, and the body. \"Mining a rich palette of colours and textures\, superimpositions and dissolves\, mixing formats of Super 8\, 35mm and video\, [she] creates films that bridge the gaps between visual art\, sound art\, cinema and the rock video\" (Lux Distribution).\n \n Torossian's style of filmmaking draws attention to the most basic component of her work\, the strip of film\, the celluloid on which images are laid to be projected. She alters the photographed images\, transforming them into other objects\; she juxtaposes them\; and she makes them move outside the original photographed movement in ways that create a kind of rich collage\, suggesting another dimension to the moving images with which she began... This Spotlight compilation is highly recommended for academic areas dealing with women in art and film as well as art history and film studies. - Oksana Dykyj\, Educational Media Reviews Online\n \n This special edition includes the following short films:\n 1) Visions\n 2) Girl from Moush\n 3) Drowning in Flames\n 4) Pomegranate Tree\n 5) Sparklehorse\n 6) Babies on the Sun\n 7) Shadowy Encounters\n 8) Hypnotize/Mezmerize - System of a Down\n \nDownload the study guide HERE (http://myumi.ch/WwzAw). It includes an essay by Ian Balfour\, York University.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSEAS Virtual Viewing. *A Thousand Cuts*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”\n\nAbout the movie:\nOn June 15\, 2020\, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel\, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy\, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns\, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in\, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA\, MOTHERLAND).\n\nCosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2020 Dewey Lecture: Building a Civic Temper
DESCRIPTION:The Edward Ginsberg Center\, in partnership with University of Michigan Museum of Art\, warmly invite UM faculty\, staff\, students and community partners to join us for our biannual event.\n\nThe Ginsberg Center’s Dewey Series recognizes the enduring legacy of philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey\, who taught at U of M in the 1890’s\, and later\, went on to found the New School for Social Research. Chief among Dewey’s enduring ideas were that thought is the means through which we come to understand and connect with the world around us\, and\, that universal education is the key to teaching people how to abandon their habits and think creatively via learning through doing.\n\nThis year's theme is inspired by William James' 1906 Essay\, 'The Moral Equivalent of War.' While some of James' assertions are cause for critique\, his primary observation that we need to focus on building our shared public life remains more important than ever. \n\nAcknowledging that the events unfolding--locally and nationally--are on our minds\, and after careful reflection\, we have modified the agenda for this year’s Dewey Lecture. We’re breaking the event into two parts\, with this Friday’s part focused on building community and engaging with one another through a facilitated discussion activity. Our planned panel will be part 2\, convened later this year.\n\nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CSEAS Virtual Mini-Symposium. Press Freedom and the Pandemic in Duterte’s Philippines: Views from the Ground Up
DESCRIPTION:*This webinar is open to the public. Please register at: http://myumi.ch/7ZNg0*\n\n*Supplementary reading materials for this event are available: http://myumi.ch/dONEB*\n\nThe Philippines’ response to the COVID19 pandemic is set against a backdrop of heightened antagonism against mass media\, a hostile attitude toward popular dissent\, and an upsurge of fake news mostly sympathetic to the government. When the virus began to take its toll in the first quarter of this year\, President Rodrigo Duterte imposed what would turn out to be the toughest and longest lockdown in the world. His political allies in Congress then worked to enact Republic Act No. 11469\, which authorized Duterte to exercise special emergency powers\, including realigning the national budget\, thus further weakening the institutional mechanisms for checks and balances. Congress also managed to pass an Anti-Terrorism Law at record speed\, which critics consider as yet another opportunity to quell opposition\, as can be gleaned from a spate of unresolved assassinations of political activists. The most palpable blow happened when the application for franchise renewal of ABS-CBN\, the country’s biggest media network known to be critical of the Duterte administration\, was denied by Congress after refusing to act on it initially. As these things unfolded\, the Philippines keyed in the most number of COVID19 cases in Southeast Asia\, coupled with its first economic recession in almost three decades and the highest unemployment rate in the region\, with almost half of the adult population left without a job. A recent multibillion-peso corruption scandal at the government-owned insurer PhilHealth further compromised the already overburdened public health system. This virtual roundtable discussion seeks to make sense of the many overlaps from the ground up between the state of press freedom in the Philippines and the ongoing efforts of the Duterte administration to control the pandemic. Philippine-based resource speakers will get together in what promises to be a multifocal discussion on the social and legal circumstances informing a country’s response to a global health crisis.\n \nPanelists:\nJosé Manuel ‘Chel’ Diokno\, human rights lawyer and founding dean of the De La Salle University College of Law.\n \nInday Espina-Varona\, award-winning journalist\, former chair of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines\, and former Knight International Fellow at Stanford University.\n \nCarlos Conde\, former journalist and researcher of Human Rights Watch\, former Jefferson Fellow at the East-West Center of the University Hawaii\, and former fellow at the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism and Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility.\n \nMike Navallo\, lawyer and broadcast journalist and former Reham al-Farra Memorial Fellow at the United Nations.\n\nDiscussant: Odessa Gonzalez Benson\, School of Social Work\n \nModerator: Allen Hicken\, Political Science

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Craft Lecture: Three Ways to Activate Attentiveness
DESCRIPTION:Poets read\, keep notebooks\, and revise. These activities are some of the ways we pay attention to the world and to language. In this craft lecture\, we will discuss a few strategies to activate reading\, notebooking\, and the revision process. \n\n\nEduardo C. Corral’s latest book of poetry\, *Guillotine* (Graywolf\, 2020)\, gives voice and depth to undocumented immigrants\, border patrol agents\, and scorned lovers through dramatic portraits of contradiction\, survival\, and deeply human\, relentless interiority.\n\nCorral is also the author of *Slow Lightning*\, which won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Competition. He’s the first Latinx poet to win this competition. Corral is the recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and the Hodder Fellowship and the National Holmes Poetry Prize\, both from Princeton University. He teaches in the MFA program in Creative Writing at North Carolina State University.\n\nPraised for his seamless blending of English and Spanish\, tender treatment of history\, and careful exploration of sexuality\, Corral’s poems hurtle across literary and linguistic borders toward a lyricism that slows down experience. Guillotine\, his second book\, traverses desert landscapes cut through by migrants\, the grief of loss\, betrayal’s lingering scars\, the border itself—great distances in which violence and yearning find roots. With extraordinary lyric imagination\, these poems wonder about being unwanted or renounced. What do we do with unrequited love? Is it with or without it that we would waste away?\n\n\nThe Zell Visiting Writers Series brings outstanding writers to campus each semester. The Series is made possible through a generous gift from U-M alumna Helen Zell (BA ’64\, LLDHon ’13). For more information\, please visit the Zell Visiting Writers Program webpage: https://lsa.umich.edu/writers\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. Copies of the readings and live\, high quality auto-captions/transcriptions will be provided at all events.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! This is a free event\, and all are welcome.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex\, tangled histories about the Great Lakes\, its watershed\, and the surrounding region. \n \nThrough the use of experimental photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and textile work\, these artists explore issues of water security\, pollution\, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together\, their work highlights the complicated personal\, political\, and economic relationships between people\, the water we depend on\, the lands we call home\, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.\n \nThese artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival\, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different\, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.\n \nWatershed includes many new\, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:\n A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River\, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility\; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes\; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan\; and\, Detroit-based musician\, artist\, and activist Sacramento Knoxx\, along with The Aadizookaan\, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. Additional generous support is provided by P.J. and Julie Solit and the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability and Department of English Language and Literature.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Biophysics Virtual Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:*Please see below for the link to join the Zoom livestream*\n\nThe Biophysics Virtual Seminar Series Presents:\n\nZhenyu Tan - Biophysics Ph.D. Candidate (Cianfrocco Group)\n\nThe mitochondrial cargo adaptor TRAK1 has overlapping binding sites for kinesin-1 and dynein\n\nAbstract: Positioning of axonal mitochondria into target locations is critical for the physiology of neurons as they supply energy and calcium buffering capacity. The outer mitochondrial membrane protein Miro cooperates with TRAK1 and TRAK2 to scaffold kinesin and dynein\, driving anterograde and retrograde mitochondrial transport. To understand how TRAK1 regulates both kinesin and dynein\, we utilized biochemical reconstitution to define the minimal region of TRAK1 sufficient for promoting motor activation. We characterized that TRAK1 has overlapping binding sites for kinesin-1 and dynein that is capable of activating both motors *in vitro*.\n\nThomas Paul - Postdoctoral Researcher (Brooks Group)\n\npH Dependent Dissociation of Folate from Folic Acid Receptors\n\nAbstract: The pH dependent binding and release of folate from folic acid receptors (FRs) is not well understood. Therefore\, we have studied pKa shifts for two isoforms of FRs (FOLR1 and FOLR2) in their apo and holo forms using explicit solvent constant pH molecular dynamics (CPHMD^MSλD). Our key findings highlight amino acid residues that have upward pKa shifts that contribute significantly to destabilizing the FRs:folate complex at pH values consistent with an endosomal environment which allows us to propose a potential mechanism of release.\n\nZoom passcode: 677763

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DCMB / CCMB Weekly Virtual Seminar featuring Gioele La Manno\, Ph.D. (EPFL Life Sciences Early Independent Research Scholar (ELISIR)
DESCRIPTION:I will present our comprehensive single-cell transcriptome atlas of mouse brain development spanning from gastrulation to birth. In this atlasing effort\, we identified almost a thousand distinct cellular states\, including the initial emergence of the neuroepithelium\, different glioblasts\, and a rich set of region-specific secondary organizers that we localize spatially. In this context\, I will provide an example of how the spatially-resolved transcriptomic data can be particularly useful to interpret the complexity of such complex atlases.\n\nContinuing in this direction\, I will show the approach that we recently proposed as a general way to spatially resolve different types of next-generation sequencing data. We designed an imaging-free framework to localize high throughput readouts within a tissue by combining compressive sampling and image reconstruction. Our first implementation of this framework transformed a low-input RNA sequencing protocol into an imaging-free spatial transcriptomics technique (STRP-seq).\n\nFinally\, I will showcase the technique with the profiling of the brain of the Australian bearded dragon Pogona vitticeps. With this analysis\, we revealed the molecular anatomy of the telencephalon of this lizard and provided evidence for a marked regionalization of the reptilian pallium and subpallium.\n\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Minicolloquium | Precision Particle Physics
DESCRIPTION:The nature and interactions of the most fundamental pieces of the universe is one of the deepest intellectual pursuits and the focus of particle physics. Probing at this level can be done by using the highest energies to explore physics at short range\, which is the realm of high energy particle physics. Our approach\, in contrast\, is to develop the tools and to make precise measurements of the properties of atoms and nuclei that would be slightly altered by short-range physics. Our focus is on the magnetic and electric dipole moments of an elementary fermion: the muon\, a hadron: the neutron\, and an atom: 129Xe. The magnetic moment of the muon is slightly affected by interaction with the quantum vacuum\, and the Standard Model can predict this to parts-per-billion\, also the level at which we can measure in an ongoing experiment at Fermilab. The electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron also arises due to interactions with the vacuum\, but has not yet been observed and is the focus of a new experiment rapidly coming together at Los Alamos. We have recently set the most precise limit on the 129Xe EDM and are planning the next generation of measurements. As we pursue these measurements\, we have developed new approaches to magnetometry that are both essential for these experiments and have broad applications. In this talk I will expand on the motivations and describe PhD research opportunities in our lab.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women's Vote
DESCRIPTION:Organized by AIGA in partnership with League of Women Voters\n\n2020 marks the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, granting women the right to vote in 1920. It was the first legislation for women’s voting rights. Not until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 were voting rights of ALL women protected and enforced\, and intimidation tactics progressively eliminated.  The Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote poster campaign\, organized by AIGA in partnership with the League of Women Voters\, commemorates this milestone. A core group of invited women of design submitted the first 65 non-partisan posters\, to launch the initiative with their vision and voices. Through the posters\, these women joined forces to collectively contribute to dialogue in design and society. This moment in history is an incredible opportunity to catalyze women in design\, voting rights\, citizenship\, community\, and diversity. The collection aspires to not only support present day voter participation\, but to also serve as a backdrop for discourse and examination of the history of voting rights and women’s fight for equality.  The poster initiative continues at aiga.org/vote\, where AIGA members can contribute posters to motivate the American public to register and turn out to vote in the 2020 general election\, as well as local elections to come. Posters are available for free download online.\n\nThe Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote exhibition at Stamps Gallery includes a selection of the 65 posters chosen by a committee of Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Nicholas Dowgwillo\, Eloise Janssen\, Keesa V. Johnson\, Francis Nunoo-Quarcoo\, Endi Poskovic\, Destini Riley\, and Stamps Gallery. The exhibition includes posters by Audrey Bennett\, Johanna Björk\, Karen Cheng\, Emily Comfort\, Jenny El-Shamy\, Dinah Fried\, Karin Fong\, Anne M. Giangiulio\, Annabelle Gould\, Brockett Horne\, Meena Khalili\, nicole killian + shawné michaelain holloway\, Karen Kurycki\, Marty Maxwell Lane\, Zuzana Licko\, Ana Llorente\, Beatriz Lozano\, Kelly Salchow MacArthur\, Rebeca Mendez\, Lana Rigsby\, Kaleena Sales\, Renee Seward\, Laurel Shoemaker\, Nancy Sklolos\,  Hannah Smotrich\, Shanti Sparrow\, Jennifer Sterling\, Fearn de Vicq\, Cymone Wilder\, and Lynne Yun.\n\nFall 2020 Hours and Policies\nBeginning September 15\, 2020\, Stamps Gallery will be open to University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 pm.\nAll visitors must have a valid M-Card to enter Stamps Gallery. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations by Heidi Kumao
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is pleased to present Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations\, a solo exhibition of narrative fabric works and experimental animations by Stamps Professor Heidi Kumao.\n\nUsing fabric cutouts and machine and hand stitching on industrial felt\, Kumao gives physical form to the intangible dynamics underlying ordinary conversations and relationships from a feminist perspective. Intentionally minimal\, each image distills an interaction\, traumatic incident\, or power imbalance into an accessible visual narrative. Recognizable objects such as chairs\, roots\, ladders\, or spotlights set the stage for the story to unfold. Events are captured midstream\, suspended in time like a felt film still.\n\nThe exhibition is inspired\, in part\, by the courage\, testimony\, and experiences of women (like Christine Blasey Ford) who publicly report assault\, harassment\, or misconduct. The #MeToo movement gave voice to thousands of women to tell their personal stories\, but also exposed a hostile backlash meant to silence them. The title\, “Real and Imagined\,” is a deliberate contradiction\; if one is true\, the other must not be. In practice\, however\, both terms are used to reference a woman’s testimony and determine how it is publicly interpreted. Her account is accepted as truthful by many and simultaneously dismissed as imaginary by the court of public opinion: “her memory is wrong\,” “she imagined it.”\n\nThe works in “Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations” make difficult conversations and relationships tangible by stripping them down to their essentials.\n\nWordless physical gestures highlight the psychological and emotional forces at play behind even the smallest of interactions.\n\nBiography\nHeidi Kumao has created award-winning experimental films\, video installations\, cinema machines\, electronic clothing\, and kinetic sculptures. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including shows at Art Science Museum Singapore\, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona\, Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona)\, and Museu da Imagem e do Som (São Paulo). She has received fellowships from the Creative Capital Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a professor at the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nFall 2020 Hours and Policies\nBeginning September 15\, 2020\, Stamps Gallery will be open to University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 pm.\nAll visitors must have a valid M-Card to enter Stamps Gallery. SUMMARY:Auditions:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition\n\nStamps Gallery is proud to kick-off the fall semester with Respond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Student Poster & Video Exhibition\, which brings together powerful posters and playful videos made by the students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.\n\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the stakeholders in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We found inspiration in the thoughtful words of renowned civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis (1940-2020) who wrote\, “My fellow Americans\, this is a special moment in our history. Just as people of all faiths and no faiths\, and all backgrounds\, creeds\, and colors banded together decades ago to fight for equality and justice in a peaceful\, orderly\, non-violent fashion\, we must do so again.” His powerful words are a reminder for all of us - present and future generations to stay hopeful\, proactive\, and resilient in our collective efforts to end racial discrimination and foster a true democracy. \n\nIn this spirit\, Stamps Gallery invited the undergraduate and graduate students at Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, to design posters and make videos to respond and contemplate what each of us can do to build a stronger community\, one that is based on the values of racial equality\, justice and belonging. How can we acknowledge our own biases\, learn from each other\, and listen to the voices of those that have been silenced? We are at a pivotal moment in our history as the pandemic radically transforms everyday life. Through this exhibition Stamps Gallery asks the UM community to come together as artists and audiences and envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging and empathy.\n\nRespond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition includes work by Emily Albright\, Adriana Alcala\, Nathan Byrne\, David Forsee\, Eloise Jansenn\, Rey Jeong\, Sohyun Lim\, Anika Love\, Maggie McConnell\, Willian Minzer\, Judah Premble\, Casey Rheault\, Natalia Rocafuerte\, Jenna Scheen\, Ellie Schmidt\, Abigail Seguin\, LaKyla Thomas\, Elijah Thompson\, Benjamin Winans\, and Molly Wu.\n\nArtwork was selected through an open call by a committee of Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Nicholas Dowgwillo\, Eloise Janssen\, Keesa V. SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Reading Women’s Lives
DESCRIPTION:This study group will read one memoir/month written by women. Several will focus on aging and old age\, some on grief and loss\, some on childhood or the middle years. Each month there will be group discussion of the selected memoir followed by a short reflective writing experience related to the issues raised by the memoir. This is not a memoir-writing class.\n\nIt’s an opportunity to use other women’s reflections on their lives to examine our own. Instructor Beth Spencer\, a mostly-retired geriatric social worker\, developed and facilitated Women & Aging through Literature & Reflective Writing for several years. The Study Group will be held on Fridays\, September 18\, October 16\, November 20\, and December 18 from 3-5 p.m.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Imbalance of carbon production and removal processes in the offshore California Current Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Zoom Meeting ID: 91433095773\nSeveral existing studies suggest that lateral export of nutrients\, organic matter\, and organisms connects nearshore upwelling regions to offshore oligotrophic environments in the California Current Ecosystem (CCE). Using data from cruises conducted in the CCE between 2006-2017\, the trophic state of the surface ocean determined from traditional (grazing) and microbial food webs were compared. The results support a nearshore\, net autotrophic region that can transition to an offshore\, net oligotrophic region. A small overall net primary production surplus of roughly 42 mmol C m-2 d-1 remained after supporting zooplankton grazing but estimated dissolved organic carbon released by phytoplankton and zooplankton processes was insufficient to support bacterial carbon demand in much of the CCE. Close examination of a westward propagating filament supports the hypothesis that the transport of excess organic matter laterally in mesoscale features may differentially support bacterioplankton and zooplankton communities and explain the observed imbalance in the offshore. Additionally\, microbial community composition from amplicon sequencing suggests community progression within the filament. Interactions between members were identified and visualized via microbial correlation networks. These relationships were further evaluated in the context of regional chemotypes as detected by environmental metabolomics. The integration of biogeochemical measurements with community composition enabled us to examine how relationships between primary and secondary producers shifted across gradients in nutrient status and carbon production as the filament was propagated offshore.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:New Red Order: Never Settle
DESCRIPTION:The New Red Order (NRO) is a mutable collective\, a “public secret society\,” facilitated by three core contributors — brothers Zack and Adam Khalil\, who are Ojibway and grew up in northern Michigan\, and Jackson Polys\, who is Tlingit from Alaska. The collective creates video and performance works that question the desire for indigeneity in dominant culture. Working with an interdisciplinary network of informants\, the NRO co-produces video\, performance\, and installation works that confront settler colonial tendencies and obstacles to Indigenous growth and agency. Their individual and collaborative work has been presented at the Alaska State Museum\, Anchorage Museum\, Berlinale\, LACMA\, Museum of Modern Art\, Sundance Film Festival\, Tate Modern\, Toronto Biennial of Art\, Walker Art Center\, and Whitney Biennial 2019.\n\nThis speaker series event includes the screening of two films presented by the artists.\n\nNever Settle: Calling In is a short recruitment video for New Red Order\, a public-secret society that simultaneously satirizes and sincerely engages with efforts for solidarity and the desire for Indigenous epistemologies. Delving into the stakes of accompliceship\, the video examines dynamic conditions in which the concerns of Indigenous people can be treated as a topic du jour\, then co-opted. This video is part of an ambitious\, multi-part project that includes a public recruitment campaign and participatory installations that invite prospective recruits to undergo an initiation. Playing with the notion of headhunting\, NRO seeks to enlist candidates in their public secret-society\, thereby investigating shame and the desire for indigeneity. Never Settle poses the question of how to channel what might be seen as inappropriate urges to merge with indigeneity into paths for the expansion of Indigenous growth and agency. \n\nAdam and Zack Khalil’s debut film INAATE/SE/ [it shines a certain way. to a certain place/it flies. falls./] re-imagines an Anishinaabe story\, the Seven Fires Prophecy\, which both predates and predicts first contact with Europeans. A kaleidoscopic experience blending documentary\, narrative\, and experimental forms\, INAATE/SE/ explores how the prophecy resonates through the generations in their indigenous community on the Michigan/Canadian border. With acute geographic specificity\, and grand historical scope\, the film fixes its lens between the sacred and the profane to pry open the construction of contemporary indigenous identity. \n\nSupported by the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) and the Ann Arbor Film Festival.\n\nHow to Watch\n\nAll speaker series events will be webcast on Fridays at 8 pm EST at http://pennystampsevents.org and at https://www.dptv.org/programs/arts-culture/penny-stamps-series/ starting Friday\, September 18.
