When the virus began to take its toll in the first quarter of this year, President Rodrigo Duterte imposed what would turn out to be the toughest and longest lockdown in the world. His political allies in Congress then worked to enact Republic Act No. 11469, which authorized Duterte to exercise special emergency powers, including realigning the national budget, thus further weakening the institutional mechanisms for checks and balances. Congress also managed to pass an Anti-Terrorism Law at record speed, which critics consider as yet another opportunity to quell opposition, as can be gleaned from a spate of unresolved assassinations of political activists. The most palpable blow happened when the application for franchise renewal of ABS-CBN, the country\u2019s biggest media network known to be critical of the Duterte administration, was denied by Congress after refusing to act on it initially. As these things unfolded, the Philippines keyed in the most number of COVID19 cases in Southeast Asia, coupled with its first economic recession in almost three decades and the highest unemployment rate in the region, with almost half of the adult population left without a job. A recent multibillion-peso corruption scandal at the government-owned insurer PhilHealth further compromised the already overburdened public health system. This virtual roundtable discussion seeks to make sense of the many overlaps from the ground up between the state of press freedom in the Philippines and the ongoing efforts of the Duterte administration to control the pandemic. Philippine-based resource speakers will get together in what promises to be a multifocal discussion on the social and legal circumstances informing a country\u2019s response to a global health Corral\u2019s latest book of poetry, *Guillotine* (Graywolf, 2020), gives voice and depth to undocumented immigrants, border patrol agents, and scorned lovers through dramatic portraits of contradiction, survival, and deeply human, relentless interiority.\r\n\r\nCorral is also the author of *Slow Lightning*, which won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Competition. He\u2019s the first Latinx poet to win this competition. Corral is the recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and the Hodder Fellowship and the National Holmes Poetry Prize, both from Princeton University. He teaches in the MFA program in Creative Writing at North Carolina State University.\r\n\r\nPraised for his seamless blending of English and Spanish, tender treatment of history, and careful exploration of sexuality, Corral\u2019s poems hurtle across literary and linguistic borders toward a lyricism that slows down experience. The outer mitochondrial membrane protein Miro cooperates with TRAK1 and TRAK2 to scaffold kinesin and dynein, driving anterograde and retrograde mitochondrial transport. To understand how TRAK1 regulates both kinesin and dynein, we utilized biochemical reconstitution to define the minimal region of TRAK1 sufficient for promoting motor activation. In this atlasing effort, we identified almost a thousand distinct cellular states, including the initial emergence of the neuroepithelium, different glioblasts, and a rich set of region-specific secondary organizers that we localize spatially. In this context, I will provide an example of how the spatially-resolved transcriptomic data can be particularly useful to interpret the complexity of such complex atlases.\r\n\r\nContinuing in this direction, I will show the approach that we recently proposed as a general way to spatially resolve different types of next-generation sequencing data. We designed an imaging-free framework to localize high throughput readouts within a tissue by combining compressive sampling and image reconstruction. Our first implementation of this framework transformed a low-input RNA sequencing protocol into an imaging-free spatial transcriptomics technique (STRP-seq).\r\n\r\nFinally, I will showcase the technique with the profiling of the brain of the Australian bearded dragon Pogona vitticeps. Probing at this level can be done by using the highest energies to explore physics at short range, which is the realm of high energy particle physics. Our approach, in contrast, is to develop the tools and to make precise measurements of the properties of atoms and nuclei that would be slightly altered by short-range physics. Our focus is on the magnetic and electric dipole moments of an elementary fermion: the muon, a hadron: the neutron, and an atom: 129Xe. The magnetic moment of the muon is slightly affected by interaction with the quantum vacuum, and the Standard Model can predict this to parts-per-billion, also the level at which we can measure in an ongoing experiment at Fermilab. The electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron also arises due to interactions with the vacuum, but has not yet been observed and is the focus of a new experiment rapidly coming together at Los Alamos. We have recently set the most precise limit on the 129Xe EDM and are planning the next generation of measurements. As we pursue these measurements, we have developed new approaches to magnetometry that are both essential for these experiments and have broad applications. Intentionally minimal, each image distills an interaction, traumatic incident, or power imbalance into an accessible visual narrative. Recognizable objects such as chairs, roots, ladders, or spotlights set the stage for the story to unfold. Events are captured midstream, suspended in time like a felt film still.\r\n\r\nThe exhibition is inspired, in part, by the courage, testimony, and experiences of women (like Christine Blasey Ford) who publicly report assault, harassment, or misconduct. The #MeToo movement gave voice to thousands of women to tell their personal stories, but also exposed a hostile backlash meant to silence them. The title, \u201cReal and Imagined,\u201d is a deliberate contradiction; if one is true, the other must not be. In practice, however, both terms are used to reference a woman\u2019s testimony and determine how it is publicly interpreted. Her account is accepted as truthful by many and simultaneously dismissed as imaginary by the court of public opinion: \u201cher memory is wrong,\u201d \u201cshe imagined it.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe works in \u201cReal and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations\u201d make difficult conversations and relationships tangible by stripping them down to their essentials.\r\n\r\nWordless physical gestures highlight the psychological and emotional forces at play behind even the smallest of interactions.\r\n\r\nBiography\r\nHeidi Kumao has created award-winning experimental films, video installations, cinema machines, electronic clothing, and kinetic sculptures. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including shows at Art Science Museum Singapore, Centre de Cultura Contempor\u00e0nia de Barcelona, Fundaci\u00f3 Joan Mir\u00f3 (Barcelona), and Museu da Imagem e do Som (S\u00e3o Paulo). The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races, genders, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality, structural racism, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the stakeholders in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality, belonging, respect? We found inspiration in the thoughtful words of renowned civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis (1940-2020) who wrote, \u201cMy fellow Americans, this is a special moment in our history. Just as people of all faiths and no faiths, and all backgrounds, creeds, and colors banded together decades ago to fight for equality and justice in a peaceful, orderly, non-violent fashion, we must do so again.\u201d His powerful words are a reminder for all of us - present and future generations to stay hopeful, proactive, and resilient in our collective efforts to end racial discrimination and foster a true democracy. \r\n\r\nIn this spirit, Stamps Gallery invited the undergraduate and graduate students at Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, to design posters and make videos to respond and contemplate what each of us can do to build a stronger community, one that is based on the values of racial equality, justice and belonging. How can we acknowledge our own biases, learn from each other, and listen to the voices of those that have been silenced? We are at a pivotal moment in our history as the pandemic radically transforms everyday life. Using data from cruises conducted in the CCE between 2006-2017, the trophic state of the surface ocean determined from traditional (grazing) and microbial food webs were compared. The results support a nearshore, net autotrophic region that can transition to an offshore, net oligotrophic region. A small overall net primary production surplus of roughly 42 mmol C m-2 d-1 remained after supporting zooplankton grazing but estimated dissolved organic carbon released by phytoplankton and zooplankton processes was insufficient to support bacterial carbon demand in much of the CCE. Close examination of a westward propagating filament supports the hypothesis that the transport of excess organic matter laterally in mesoscale features may differentially support bacterioplankton and zooplankton communities and explain the observed imbalance in the offshore. Additionally, microbial community composition from amplicon sequencing suggests community progression within the filament. Interactions between members were identified and visualized via microbial correlation networks. These relationships were further evaluated in the context of regional chemotypes as detected by environmental metabolomics. The integration of biogeochemical measurements with community composition enabled us to examine how relationships between primary and secondary producers shifted across gradients in nutrient status
