DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings work from thirteen contemporary regional and international artists to UMMA for an exhibition that asks visitors to recognize complex\, tangled histories about the Great Lakes\, its watershed\, and the surrounding region. \n \nThrough the use of experimental photography\, painting\, sculpture\, and textile work\, these artists explore issues of water security\, pollution\, and the deep cultural histories of the Great Lakes region. Taken together\, their work highlights the complicated personal\, political\, and economic relationships between people\, the water we depend on\, the lands we call home\, and the forces challenging the sanctity of it all.\n \nThese artists encourage us to consider the bodies of water as a resource linked to our survival\, with complex histories of cultural exchange. Their stories are different\, and their perspectives and interpretations are varied. But these artists demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the region’s critical water crises.\n \nWatershed includes many new\, exclusive works commissioned by UMMA for the exhibition including:\n  A series of large-scale cyanotype prints from Washington-based artist Meghann Riepenhoff processed in the watershed of Lake Ontario on the Genesee River\, near the former site of Eastman Kodak Co. production facility\; Calligraphic paintings from Syrian-born and Dubai-based artist Khaled Al-Saai that explore how language can be used to visually connect us to meanings found in the watery worlds above and below the surfaces of the Great Lakes\; A new mural by Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine from the Serpent River First Nation will examine accounts of western expansion across the state of Michigan\; and\, Detroit-based musician\, artist\, and activist Sacramento Knoxx\, along with The Aadizookaan\, will fill the gallery with recorded song compositions made with water samples from each Great Lake and other sacred materials.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the ​Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund. DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion\nThis session explores how contemporary artists continue to build on this dynamic legacy through musical works that extend the techniques\, themes\, and concerns of the Black art song into the twenty-first century.\n\nIntroduction: Stephen Michael Newby\, Seattle Pacific University\nModerator: Uzee Brown\, Morehouse College\nPanelists: Britney Boykin\, Spelman College\; Adolphus Hailstork\, Old Dominion University\; Dave Ragland\, and Darryl Taylor\, University of California - Irvine\n\nIn 1916\, concert artist\, arranger\, music editor\, and composer\, Harry T. Burleigh (1866-1949)\, published Jubilee Songs of the United States. Arranged for piano and voice\, the songs represented a landmark as it established the solo Black art song as a distinct genre. Willis Patterson’s landmark collection\, Anthology of Art Songs by Black American Composers was published in 1977. Its influence on the post-Civil Rights era pedagogy and performance of Black concert music has been inestimable. By building on Burleigh’s legacy\, Patterson’s anthology has been central to establishing Black art songs as an important tradition of practice in American concert life on par with German Lieder and French Chanson.

DESCRIPTION:Tales from the Briar Patch by Nkeiru Okoye and Carman Moore (librettist)\nOn February 27\, 2020 SMTD presented a public workshop reading of “Bre’r Rabbit and the Tar Baby\,” the first of three stories in Nkeiru Okoye and Carman Moore’s Tales from the Briar Patch\, a new opera in development that is both family-friendly and fun. In this updated reboot of the traditional Bre’r Rabbit stories\, Sister Sparrow\, Sister Robin\, and Madame Partridge retell the antics of Bre’r Rabbit and his nemesis Bre’r Fox. This public reading was the culmination of a workshop with SMTD singers and the composer. The FaceBook watch party will include commentary by the composer and cast members.
