SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Film Screening | Artist Spotlight Series: Gariné Torossian
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance to receive the streaming link and to attend the Q/A session with the film director: http://myumi.ch/ZQN9R\n\nThe film will be available for you to watch on your own from September 18 to 23.\n \n In her lush\, intricately constructed works\, Gariné Torossian explores film form\, hybrid film and video technologies\, and themes of belonging\, identity\, and the body. \"Mining a rich palette of colours and textures\, superimpositions and dissolves\, mixing formats of Super 8\, 35mm and video\, [she] creates films that bridge the gaps between visual art\, sound art\, cinema and the rock video\" (Lux Distribution).\n \n Torossian's style of filmmaking draws attention to the most basic component of her work\, the strip of film\, the celluloid on which images are laid to be projected. She alters the photographed images\, transforming them into other objects\; she juxtaposes them\; and she makes them move outside the original photographed movement in ways that create a kind of rich collage\, suggesting another dimension to the moving images with which she began... This Spotlight compilation is highly recommended for academic areas dealing with women in art and film as well as art history and film studies. - Oksana Dykyj\, Educational Media Reviews Online\n \n This special edition includes the following short films:\n 1) Visions\n 2) Girl from Moush\n 3) Drowning in Flames\n 4) Pomegranate Tree\n 5) Sparklehorse\n 6) Babies on the Sun\n 7) Shadowy Encounters\n 8) Hypnotize/Mezmerize - System of a Down\n \nDownload the study guide HERE (http://myumi.ch/WwzAw). It includes an essay by Ian Balfour\, York University.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSEAS Virtual Viewing. *A Thousand Cuts*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”\n\nAbout the movie:\nOn June 15\, 2020\, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel\, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy\, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns\, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in\, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA\, MOTHERLAND).\n\nCosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Clinical Science Brown Bag: Inclusivity in Admissions and Training: Key to Workforce Diversification
DESCRIPTION:Inclusive Admissions and Training\n\nThere is a gaping under-representation of minorities (Hispanic and African American\, in particular) among practicing psychologists\, which can compound the problem of mental health disparities in underserved communities (SAMSHA\, 2018). National data from accredited doctoral programs offers little reassurance the phenomenon will resolve on its own (Callahan et al.\, 2018). Studies of the psychologist workforce pipeline make clear that graduate admissions is a major point of diversity constriction\, although issues occur with retention as well. Programs within and beyond our discipline have tried multiple strategies to reverse this trend\, but data on their efficacy varies in quality and scope. We selectively review findings on some of these strategies\, present a case study from the clinical psychology program at UNT\, and review how the program has sought to connect the issue of inclusiveness in graduate training with mental health disparities in federally designated health professional shortage areas in our community.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Citizen Activism: Driver of A Healthy Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Citizen participation is the crucial process through which private individuals and groups work to influence public decisions as part of the democratic process. Organizations ranging from national issue-oriented groups to local broad- based grass roots groups work to enhance citizen participation. \n\nThis “bottom up” activity may include advocacy\, lobbying\, protests\, strikes\, petition drives\, ballot proposals\, lawsuits and political campaigning. Citizen activism driven by real community needs and desires can be a powerful transformative force.\n\nOur panelists\, Roddy Wares\, Lisa Wozniak\, Branden Snyder and moderator Karen Bantel will help us understand how the organizations that they represent aid individuals in understanding ideas about citizenship\, politics\, government and the issues important to their communities and specific organizations.\n\nRoddy Wares has been an active member of the League of Women Voters in the Ann Arbor area since 2016. She leads the committee that registered students in almost all of the Washtenaw County high schools as well as WCC for the past three years and also leads the LWVAAA effort to register seniors. Currently she is working with Voting Access for All Coalition. She has been registering voters in Washtenaw County for at least 30 years!\n\nLisa Wozniak’s career spans over two decades of environmental and conservation advocacy in the political arena. She is a nationally recognized expert in non-profit growth and management and a leader in Great Lakes protections. Lisa is a three-time graduate from the University of Michigan\, with a Bachelor’s Degree and two ensuing Masters Degrees in Social Work and Education.\n\nBefore becoming Executive Director in 2006\, Wozniak was a member of the Michigan LCV Board and today serves on the boards of the Friends of Rutherford Pool\, the Huron River Watershed Council\, and the National League of Conservation Voters Education Fund.\n\nBorn and raised on Detroit’s East Side\, Branden Snyder\, executive director of Detroit Action\, has been involved in electoral and community organizing projects throughout the U.S. for 10 years. Previously\, he was the Deputy Organizing Director in charge of Youth Voting for the Hillary for Michigan 2016 presidential campaign and Director of Organizing for Michigan United\, a coalition of faith\, labor & civic organizations in Detroit\, Flint\, Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. He is a graduate of UM – Ann Arbor with a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the UM Ford School of Public Policy and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Afro-American studies with a minor in Urban Community Studies.\n\nKaren Bantel\, Ph.D.\, was formerly a professor of business strategy and entrepreneurship at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University\, and consulted in those areas for many years.\n\nShe has facilitated and moderated a number of OLLI offerings\, including: Russia\, The Retreat of Western Liberalism\, A World in Disarray\, Can Democracy Survive?\, Vaccines Explained\, and TED talks.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Presentation:IRIS: Five Years of Creating Trusted Independent Data About the Impact of Research
DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Research on Innovation and Science (IRIS) is a member consortium of universities anchored by an IRB-approved data repository hosted at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. IRIS was founded in 2015 with support from the Alfred P. Sloan and Ewing Marion Kauffman foundations.\n\nIRIS collects record level administrative data from its members to produce a de-identified dataset for research and reporting that will improve our ability to understand\, explain and improve the public value of research. Its mission is to be a trusted resource for high quality data that supports independent\, frontier research on science and innovation in the service of the public interest.\n\nThis year\, IRIS created a new tool called the Impact Finder\, which allows for easy browsing of our uniquely powerful dataset based on geographic area\, subject matter\, funding agency\, and time period.\n\nThe Impact Finder allows non-data-trained users to search our unique database to find story leads that align with your institution's communications priorities.\n\nThis webinar is part of the 2020 ICPSR Data Fair\, \"Data in Real Life.\" More information about the Data Fair can be found at http://myumi.ch/ICPSRdatafair2020. Please note that all attendees for this session must be registered for the ICPSR Data Fair.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Redistricting Math: Using Computers to Stop Gerrymandering
DESCRIPTION:In the last several years\, mathematicians and computer scientists have become increasingly involved in the fight against gerrymandering. In particular\, they have been using sampling algorithms to generate large collections of district maps\, against which to compare a challenged map. If the challenged map is an outlier across several metrics that may be evidence of an unconstitutional gerrymander. These methods have been used in gerrymandering litigation and are expected to play an even bigger part in redistricting lawsuits after the release of the decennial census data next year. In this talk we will look at the basics of some map-sampling techniques as well as the data required for the analysis. We'll also discuss the biggest challenges to data collection and processing in redistricting work.\n\nThis webinar is part of the 2020 ICPSR Data Fair\, \"Data in Real Life.\" More information about the Data Fair can be found at http://myumi.ch/ICPSRdatafair2020. SUMMARY:Presentation:Methods and Analytic Approaches for Physically Disabled Persons Using Administrative Claims Dataset
DESCRIPTION:Administrative claims datasets present both challenges and benefits in the analysis of outcomes\, cost\, and comorbidity burden facing physically disabled individuals. The increasing use of administrative claims represents one of many plausible answers to concerns related to small sample and single institution studies. Longitudinal data analysis as well as outcomes and cost (insurance reimbursement and patient out-of-pocket cost as a form of financial burden) can be carefully studied using administrative claims datasets. In this webinar\, we will highlight the strengths and analytic approaches in current work from the IDEAL RRTC. We will also carefully consider potential limitations in using these analytic approaches. Two different case studies will be considered with a cursory treatment of analytic approaches and population identification with inclusion and exclusion criteria with justification and rationale for these decisions. Applications of survival analysis\, propensity score matching\, and generalized linear models with respect to dichotomous and continuous and skewed outcomes will be discussed within the contexts of these case studies. The webinar will culminate with a summarization of the value of these studies\, why they should continue to be pursued\, and next steps in the evolution of claims-based research for the disabled population. The presenters\, Dr. Elham Mahmoudi and Mr. Neil Kamdar\, are both health services researchers with extensive experience working with administrative claims as well as other secondary data sources with a focus on applied econometric and statistical methods. \n\nThis webinar is part of the 2020 ICPSR Data Fair\, \"Data in Real Life.\" More information about the Data Fair can be found at http://myumi.ch/ICPSRdatafair2020. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CMENAS Colloquium Series. The Revolution Within: Islamic Media and the Struggle for the “New Egypt”
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 CMENAS Colloquium Series theme is \"The Arab Spring: 10 Years Later.\"\n(Please register at http://myumi.ch/jxDBz\; a Zoom link will be emailed to you the day of the event.)\n\nAbout the Presentation:\n The 2011 revolution unleashed passionate public concern about how to create a “New Egypt.” Islamic channels were important sites of these debates as rival television preachers gave media form to their competing visions of what a virtuous life entails and what an ethical polity looks like. Based on fieldwork in Cairo with the “New Preachers” – so named because of their novel styles of Islamic media – this talk explores what these on and off-screen struggles reveal about Islam’s competing theologies and the distinctive media forms they take. It also considers what methodological attunements such contested religious mediations demand of their ethnographers.\n \n \n About the Speaker:\n Yasmin Moll is an assistant professor in the department of anthropology. She is writing a book about new forms of Islamic media and the religious contention they provoke against the backdrop of Egypt’s 2011 revolution. Her fieldwork was supported by numerous national grants\, including from the Social Science Research Council\, the National Science Foundation and the Fulbright Commission. Her publications include articles in Cultural Anthropology\, Public Culture\, and Middle East Report\, among others. She is also a documentary filmmaker and a former member of the Michigan Society of Fellows.\n\n*If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange. Contact: Kristin Waterbury at waterbuk@umich.edu*

Due to perturbations from the giant planets (Jupiter\, Saturn\, Uranus\, Neptune)\, the orbits of these objects slowly evolve with time. In this talk\, we will analyze the orbital dynamics of the Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) both with numerical simulations and with a theoretical Hamiltonian approach. We will discuss the structure of the outer Solar System and focus on the most extreme sub-population of objects: the long-period high eccentricity class. The orbits of these extreme KBOs all appear to point in the same direction in physical space\; this anomalous signal cannot be explained by the currently known eight-planet Solar System. In order to understand their origin and dynamics\, we introduce the hypothesized Planet Nine to the distant Kuiper belt. We find that the presence of Planet Nine allows for two stable populations of objects - the aligned and anti-aligned KBOs - in agreement with observations. We will discuss the mechanisms that lead to this stability\, and focus on a fascinating process called resonance hopping\, in which a KBO rapidly transitions from one resonance to another with Planet Nine. By tying together studies of observed KBOs with more general analyses of the evolution of synthetic test particles\, we elucidate the dynamics of the outer Solar System in and out of the Planet Nine context.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:RNA Seminar featuring: Andrey Krasilnikov\, Penn State
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM REGISTRATION REQUIRED: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_obckKUCLT4mXI7kPskzc-Q\n\nKEYWORDS: Ribozymes\, RNase P\, RNase MRP\, ribonucleoprotein complexes\, RNA-driven protein remodelling\n\nABSTRACT: Ribonuclease (RNase) P is a ribozyme-based catalytic ribonucleoprotein complex involved primarily in the maturation of tRNA in all three domains of life. In the course of evolution\, the size and complexity of RNase P grew as the catalytic RNA moiety recruited additional protein components. In eukaryotes\, the RNase P lineage has split\, giving rise to a related RNP enzyme called RNase MRP\, which shares multiple structural features (including most of the protein components) with the eukaryotic RNase P\, but has a distinct and non-overlapping specificity. We report the recently solved cryo-EM structure of the 450 kDa yeast RNase MRP holoenzyme and compare it with the structure of its progenitor RNP\, RNase P. We show that\, surprisingly\, several of the proteins shared by RNase MRP and RNase P undergo RNA-driven structural remodeling\, allowing the same proteins to function in distinct structural contexts. This remodeling\, combined with altered peripheral RNA elements\, results in the functional diversification of the two closely related RNPs\, in spite of the structural conservation of the nearly identical catalytic cores\, demonstrating structural underpinnings of the acquisition of new functions by catalytic RNPs.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Older Adults\, Tech Use\, and Social Well-Being during COVID-19 and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Nearly one in three older adults in the U.S. experienced some form of loneliness in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly restricted older adults’ (ages 65+) in-person social interactions\, likely increasing loneliness among this demographic. Due to these restrictions\, older adults have started to change their relationships with technology to communicate with family and friends at a distance using smartphones and computers. However\, these technologies may not be accessible for all older adults. Voice-based technologies such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant can be more accessible to those with motor challenges or vision loss/blindness\, yet have not been studied in-depth for how they can support older adult’s well-being. In this talk\, I will discuss (1) a recent interview study with older adults COVID-19 technology use and (2) a recent analysis of more than 50\,000 queries older adults made to the Amazon Alexa for social well-being. Early findings point to positive and negative aspects of using technology for well-being and aging. \n \nRobin Brewer is an Assistant Professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. She also holds a courtesy appointment in Computer Science and Engineering. Dr. Brewer’s research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) asks (1) how experiences with technology can be more accessible to digitally constrained communities and (2) how these communities use technology for social well-being. Much of her work focuses on older adults and people with vision impairments. Dr. Brewer holds a Ph.D. in Technology and Social Behavior from Northwestern University\, M.S. in Human-Centered Computing from University of Maryland - Baltimore County\, and B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland - College Park.\n\nThis seminar series is presented by the U-M Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS): Our mission is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare delivery through a multi-disciplinary\, systems-engineering approach. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Mentoring the Mentor: Being a Good Influence
DESCRIPTION:There's many reasons why someone would want to be a mentor - you remember an older student or professor giving you guidance through undergrad\, you've learned a lot and want to pass it on\, you had a hard time and want to make sure younger students don't have to deal with what you did - but what makes a good mentor? What skills do you need\, how do you make the relationship beneficial to both you and the mentee? What if you mess something up? Mentorship can be an exciting and terrifying prospect\, but we're here to give you some tips.\n \n We've brought together a panel of experienced LGBTQ+ staff and faculty who participate as mentors in our MaPPS (Mentoring and Personal/Professional Support) program to talk about what they've learned about being a good influence and building trust with a mentee. Afterwards\, ask the panelists questions and consider signing up for our GPS (Guidance - Perspective - Support) program\, our peer-to-peer mentorship opportunity\, and start using those skills today!\n \n \n Spectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:\n The Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize.
