SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Film Screening | Artist Spotlight Series: Gariné Torossian
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance to receive the streaming link and to attend the Q/A session with the film director: http://myumi.ch/ZQN9R\n\nThe film will be available for you to watch on your own from September 18 to 23.\n \n In her lush\, intricately constructed works\, Gariné Torossian explores film form\, hybrid film and video technologies\, and themes of belonging\, identity\, and the body. \"Mining a rich palette of colours and textures\, superimpositions and dissolves\, mixing formats of Super 8\, 35mm and video\, [she] creates films that bridge the gaps between visual art\, sound art\, cinema and the rock video\" (Lux Distribution).\n \n Torossian's style of filmmaking draws attention to the most basic component of her work\, the strip of film\, the celluloid on which images are laid to be projected. She alters the photographed images\, transforming them into other objects\; she juxtaposes them\; and she makes them move outside the original photographed movement in ways that create a kind of rich collage\, suggesting another dimension to the moving images with which she began... This Spotlight compilation is highly recommended for academic areas dealing with women in art and film as well as art history and film studies. - Oksana Dykyj\, Educational Media Reviews Online\n \n This special edition includes the following short films:\n 1) Visions\n 2) Girl from Moush\n 3) Drowning in Flames\n 4) Pomegranate Tree\n 5) Sparklehorse\n 6) Babies on the Sun\n 7) Shadowy Encounters\n 8) Hypnotize/Mezmerize - System of a Down\n \nDownload the study guide HERE (http://myumi.ch/WwzAw). It includes an essay by Ian Balfour\, York University.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSEAS Virtual Viewing. *A Thousand Cuts*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”\n\nAbout the movie:\nOn June 15\, 2020\, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel\, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy\, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns\, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in\, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA\, MOTHERLAND).\n\nCosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! SUMMARY:Presentation:Damned Lies and Coronavirus Statistics
DESCRIPTION:A key skill in thinking critically involves understanding that statistics are socially constructed. That is\, it is important to ask questions such as: Who counted?\; What did they count?\; Why did they count?\; and How did they go about counting? Interpreting the COVID-19 pandemic illustrates the importance of a constructionist approach\, as people continue to struggle with measuring and interpreting the disease's effects.\n\nThis webinar is part of the 2020 ICPSR Data Fair\, \"Data in Real Life.\" More information about the Data Fair can be found at http://myumi.ch/ICPSRdatafair2020. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Zoom Webinar: \"From Virtuosity to Vernacularism: Reversals of Glass Paintings\"
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2020 lecture series will be only available on-line as a Zoom webinar.\n \nThis study examines the transformation of reverse glass painting from an art of virtuosity to a vernacular form of art from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century during Sino-European encounter. The vernacularization of reverse glass painting\, Dr. Liu shall argue\, reflected a consumption-driven reinvention of certain literary scenes or popular drama that highlighted the common value of plate glass as a diaphanous spectatorial plane. By examining the interrelationship among technique\, medium\, and genre\, this talk reassesses the material agency and medial effect of clear plate glass which was used to support and spark the theatrical views.\n \nLihong Liu is Sally Michelson Davidson Assistant Professor of Chinese Arts and Cultures in the Department of the History of Art at the University of Michigan. Dr. Liu specializes in Chinese art history of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Her research focuses on time\, matter\, space\, and motion in art\, especially with regard to art’s environmental engagement. Liu earned her PhD in the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. Prior to joining the University of Michigan\, she taught at the University of Rochester.\n\nZoom Registration Link: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_mDik8MGCR1SxkXz3F_8hBw

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Political Economy Workshop (PEW)
DESCRIPTION:Hyeon-Young Ro's research focuses on domestic firms' preferences and regulations on inbound foreign direct investment (FDI). Her dissertation project examines how industrial features such as economies of scale internal and external to a firm shape attitude towards restrictions on inbound FDI by domestic producers. She also analyzes FDI regulations by disaggregating the types of FDI into two different entry modes: greenfield investment and cross-border mergers and acquisitions. More generally\, she studies how domestic special interest groups influence trade and FDI policy making.\n\nEmail political-economy-workshop@umich.edu for the meeting link.\n\nPEW provides a unique forum for doctoral students and faculty members to share and develop interdisciplinary research in political economy. Political science and economics are intimately linked in both substance and methodology\, and the field of political economy is among the most fertile and enduring areas for cross-disciplinary research in the social sciences. Currently\, PEW is the sole interdisciplinary workshop at the University of Michigan wholly dedicated to the exploration of current research in political economy\, and thus plays a valuable role in fostering connections among the university’s various departments and schools.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Theory: Organized Information Transmission (Joint work with Ina Taneva)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nIn reality\, how information is transmitted to its recipients is as important as its content. In this paper\, we introduce families of (indirect) information structures — meeting schemes and delegated hierarchies — that capture the horizontal and vertical dimensions of real-world transmission. We characterize the outcomes that they implement in general (finite) games and show that they are optimal in binary-action environments with strategic complementarities. Our main application illustrates how the optimal meeting scheme and the optimal delegated hierarchy change with the objective function in a classical regime-change game.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Who Do We Choose To Be? Facing Reality\, Claiming Leadership\, and Restoring Sanity by Margaret Wheatley
DESCRIPTION:The focus of this class is the title book by Meg Wheatley. It offers wisdom that motivates and inspires us to local action on important issues. Some of the central questions raised by the book are: what does it take to lead an “island of sanity” and is it possible to create protection from the wild irrationality raging about us? SUMMARY:Exhibition:Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women's Vote
DESCRIPTION:Organized by AIGA in partnership with League of Women Voters\n\n2020 marks the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, granting women the right to vote in 1920. It was the first legislation for women’s voting rights. Not until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 were voting rights of ALL women protected and enforced\, and intimidation tactics progressively eliminated.  The Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote poster campaign\, organized by AIGA in partnership with the League of Women Voters\, commemorates this milestone. A core group of invited women of design submitted the first 65 non-partisan posters\, to launch the initiative with their vision and voices. Through the posters\, these women joined forces to collectively contribute to dialogue in design and society. This moment in history is an incredible opportunity to catalyze women in design\, voting rights\, citizenship\, community\, and diversity. The collection aspires to not only support present day voter participation\, but to also serve as a backdrop for discourse and examination of the history of voting rights and women’s fight for equality.  The poster initiative continues at aiga.org/vote\, where AIGA members can contribute posters to motivate the American public to register and turn out to vote in the 2020 general election\, as well as local elections to come. Posters are available for free download online.\n\nThe Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote exhibition at Stamps Gallery includes a selection of the 65 posters chosen by a committee of Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Nicholas Dowgwillo\, Eloise Janssen\, Keesa V. Johnson\, Francis Nunoo-Quarcoo\, Endi Poskovic\, Destini Riley\, and Stamps Gallery. The exhibition includes posters by Audrey Bennett\, Johanna Björk\, Karen Cheng\, Emily Comfort\, Jenny El-Shamy\, Dinah Fried\, Karin Fong\, Anne M. Giangiulio\, Annabelle Gould\, Brockett Horne\, Meena Khalili\, nicole killian + shawné michaelain holloway\, Karen Kurycki\, Marty Maxwell Lane\, Zuzana Licko\, Ana Llorente\, Beatriz Lozano\, Kelly Salchow MacArthur\, Rebeca Mendez\, Lana Rigsby\, Kaleena Sales\, Renee Seward\, Laurel Shoemaker\, Nancy Sklolos\,  Hannah Smotrich\, Shanti Sparrow\, Jennifer Sterling\, Fearn de Vicq\, Cymone Wilder\, and Lynne Yun.\n\nFall 2020 Hours and Policies\nBeginning September 15\, 2020\, Stamps Gallery will be open to University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 pm.\nAll visitors must have a valid M-Card to enter Stamps Gallery. SUMMARY:Presentation:Quantifying Gender Identities and Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:In this session we will review some of the challenges in creating gender inclusive categories in surveys using real world examples. Key issues include:1) identifying correlations with non-binary gender data (what if your sample has 1 trans person and everyone else is cis male/female\, for example?) and 2) challenges related to time order with transgender populations (what it means to be visibly transgender in relation to discrimination can vary so much over the life course\, for example). We will also discuss how researchers\, particularly grad students and undergrads\, are using social media to target distribution of surveys to transgender populations. The methodological implications of these transparent dialogues between researcher and researched populations are fascinating. This topic may actually be the most controversial between positivist-leaning and cultural sociologist attendees. We look forward to audience participation on this one!\n\nThis webinar is part of the 2020 ICPSR Data Fair\, \"Data in Real Life.\" More information about the Data Fair can be found at http://myumi.ch/ICPSRdatafair2020. Please note that all attendees for this session must be registered for the ICPSR Data Fair.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations by Heidi Kumao
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is pleased to present Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations\, a solo exhibition of narrative fabric works and experimental animations by Stamps Professor Heidi Kumao.\n\nUsing fabric cutouts and machine and hand stitching on industrial felt\, Kumao gives physical form to the intangible dynamics underlying ordinary conversations and relationships from a feminist perspective. Intentionally minimal\, each image distills an interaction\, traumatic incident\, or power imbalance into an accessible visual narrative. Recognizable objects such as chairs\, roots\, ladders\, or spotlights set the stage for the story to unfold. Events are captured midstream\, suspended in time like a felt film still.\n\nThe exhibition is inspired\, in part\, by the courage\, testimony\, and experiences of women (like Christine Blasey Ford) who publicly report assault\, harassment\, or misconduct. The #MeToo movement gave voice to thousands of women to tell their personal stories\, but also exposed a hostile backlash meant to silence them. The title\, “Real and Imagined\,” is a deliberate contradiction\; if one is true\, the other must not be. In practice\, however\, both terms are used to reference a woman’s testimony and determine how it is publicly interpreted. Her account is accepted as truthful by many and simultaneously dismissed as imaginary by the court of public opinion: “her memory is wrong\,” “she imagined it.”\n\nThe works in “Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations” make difficult conversations and relationships tangible by stripping them down to their essentials.\n\nWordless physical gestures highlight the psychological and emotional forces at play behind even the smallest of interactions.\n\nBiography\nHeidi Kumao has created award-winning experimental films\, video installations\, cinema machines\, electronic clothing\, and kinetic sculptures. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including shows at Art Science Museum Singapore\, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona\, Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona)\, and Museu da Imagem e do Som (São Paulo). She has received fellowships from the Creative Capital Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a professor at the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nFall 2020 Hours and Policies\nBeginning September 15\, 2020\, Stamps Gallery will be open to University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 pm.\nAll visitors must have a valid M-Card to enter Stamps Gallery. SUMMARY:Auditions:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition\n\nStamps Gallery is proud to kick-off the fall semester with Respond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Student Poster & Video Exhibition\, which brings together powerful posters and playful videos made by the students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.\n\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the stakeholders in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We found inspiration in the thoughtful words of renowned civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis (1940-2020) who wrote\, “My fellow Americans\, this is a special moment in our history. Just as people of all faiths and no faiths\, and all backgrounds\, creeds\, and colors banded together decades ago to fight for equality and justice in a peaceful\, orderly\, non-violent fashion\, we must do so again.” His powerful words are a reminder for all of us - present and future generations to stay hopeful\, proactive\, and resilient in our collective efforts to end racial discrimination and foster a true democracy. \n\nIn this spirit\, Stamps Gallery invited the undergraduate and graduate students at Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, to design posters and make videos to respond and contemplate what each of us can do to build a stronger community\, one that is based on the values of racial equality\, justice and belonging. How can we acknowledge our own biases\, learn from each other\, and listen to the voices of those that have been silenced? We are at a pivotal moment in our history as the pandemic radically transforms everyday life. Through this exhibition Stamps Gallery asks the UM community to come together as artists and audiences and envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging and empathy.\n\nRespond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition includes work by Emily Albright\, Adriana Alcala\, Nathan Byrne\, David Forsee\, Eloise Jansenn\, Rey Jeong\, Sohyun Lim\, Anika Love\, Maggie McConnell\, Willian Minzer\, Judah Premble\, Casey Rheault\, Natalia Rocafuerte\, Jenna Scheen\, Ellie Schmidt\, Abigail Seguin\, LaKyla Thomas\, Elijah Thompson\, Benjamin Winans\, and Molly Wu.\n\nArtwork was selected through an open call by a committee of Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Nicholas Dowgwillo\, Eloise Janssen\, Keesa V. The Sumerians\, Akkadians\, and Assyrians depicted their gods and religious rituals of their cultures\, wars and empires. SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:\"From Mobility to Accessibility\": Transforming Urban Transportation and Land-Use Planning
DESCRIPTION:The book \"From Mobility to Accessibility\" flips the tables on the standard models for evaluating regional transportation performance\, arguing for an “accessibility shift” whereby transportation planning\, and the transportation dimensions of land-use planning\, would be based on people’s ability to reach destinations\, rather than on their ability to travel fast.\n\nExisting models for planning and evaluating transportation\, which have taken vehicle speeds as the most important measure\, would make sense if movement were the purpose of transportation. But it is the ability to reach destinations\, not movement per se\, that people seek from their transportation systems. \n\nWhile the concept of accessibility has been around for the better part of a century\, \"From Mobility to Accessibility\" shows that the accessibility shift is compelled by the fundamental purpose of transportation. The book argues that the shift would be transformative to the practice of both transportation and land-use planning but is impeded by many conceptual obstacles regarding the nature of accessibility and its potential for guiding development of the built environment.\n\n\nAuthor\, Jonathan Levine is a professor of urban and regional planning at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He teaches in the areas of transportation\, land use\, economics of planning\, and research design.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

DESCRIPTION:What are the challenges around data quality of the census in 2020? Join us for a conversation with:\n\nJohn H. Thompson\, former Director of the U.S. Census Bureau \n\nD'Vera Cohn\, senior writer\, and editor at Pew Research Center\n\nDr. Joseph Hotz\, Distinguished Professor of Economics at Duke University\n\nModerated by Dr. Mark Hansen\, Director of the Brown Institute of Media Innovation at Columbia University\n\nPresented by:\n\nD’Vera Cohn\nSenior Writer and Editor at Pew Research Center\n\nD’Vera Cohn is a senior writer and editor at Pew Research Center. She studies and writes about demographics in the United States\, especially the census. Cohn was a Washington Post reporter for 21 years\, mainly writing about demographics\, and was the newspaper’s lead reporter for the 2000 census. Before joining Pew Research Center\, she served as a consultant and freelance writer for the Brookings Institution and Population Reference Bureau. Cohn is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and is a former Nieman Fellow. She is an author of studies on the marriage and birth rates in the United States\, migration between the U.S. and Mexico\, and U.S. population projections. Cohn manages Pew Research Center’s @allthingscensus Twitter account. She has spoken at national journalism conferences about how reporters can make use of demographic data in stories and often talks about the Center’s findings in print and broadcast media.\n\nDr. Joseph Hotz\nDistinguished Professor of Economics at Duke University\n\nProfessor Hotz specializes in the subjects of applied econometrics\, labor economics\, economic demography\, and economics of the family. His studies have investigated the impacts of social programs\, such as welfare-to-work training\; the relationship between childbearing patterns and labor force participation of U.S. women\; the effects of teenage pregnancy\; the child care market\; the Earned Income Tax Credit\; and other such subjects. He began conducting his studies in 1977 and has since published his work extensively in books and leading academic journals. He received accolades for his outstanding work from the National Academy of Sciences Panel evaluating the census\, among others. From 2013 to 2017\, Thompson was the director of the Census Bureau where he successfully worked with the executive and legislative branches of the federal government\, including the White House and Congress\, to transform the Bureau into a forward-looking 21st century statistical agency. His accomplishments include a redesign of the 2020 Decennial Census to achieve great efficiencies through the use of modern geospatial tools\, the Internet\, and mobile technology\; and implementation of a research program to support mission critical activities – both of which have had a profound impact on the federal statistical system.\n\nThompson was President and Executive Vice President of the (National Opinion Research Center) NORC at the University of Chicago\, a national nonprofit organization that conducts high-quality social science research in the public interest. Between 2002 and 2012\, he led the organization to nearly 50 percent growth in revenue\, implemented new initiatives to improve and advance federal statistics\, and oversaw major research projects\, including the National Immunization Survey conducted on behalf of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.\n\nThompson is a fellow of the American Statistical Association\, a member of the 2013 Virginia Tech College of Science Hall of Distinction inaugural class\, and received the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executive in 2001. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Performing the Moment\, Performing the Movement
DESCRIPTION:Free & Open to the public\nRegistration: http://myumi.ch/O4zpw\n\nHow does one make performance during a pandemic? In this talk Dr. Arthur looks at the unique ways that artists have addressed HIV/AIDS to answer this question. Considering theatrical interventions by Karen Finley and Demian DinéYazhi´\, Dr. Arthur argues that performance created in response to HIV/AIDS can teach us to challenge dominant narratives about a virus and strategies for living through an ongoing pandemic.\n\nMarc Arthur is an artist and scholar who holds a PhD in Performance Studies from New York University (2019). He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in Arts-based Social Justice Research and Practice at the University of Michigan where he is studying the role of directing\, devised theatre\, dramatic writing\, and acting in achieving diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. His research and teaching interests encompass contemporary performance and theatre practice\, dramatic literature and history\, performance studies\, queer theory\, and critical ethnic studies. He is currently working on his first book project entitled\, An Imagined Virus: Theatre\, Memory\, and the Politics of AIDS\, which argues that artists use performance to restage the AIDS crisis by enacting dramaturgies of transformation and new forms of biomedical embodiment.\n\nHis academic writing and criticism has appeared in edited volumes and journals including Bomb Magazine\, Yale’s Theater\, the book Viral Dramaturgies: HIV and AIDS in Performance in the Twenty-First Century\, as well as numerous art catalogues. He has also written extensively for Performa Magazine\, where he is a Contributing Editor. From 2011 – 2017 he was the Head of Research and Archives at Performa where he organized touring exhibitions\, curated programs\, led interdisciplinary research projects with a wide range of artists\, and spearheaded the acquisition of the Performa collection by NYU’s Fales Library.\n\nAs an artist and director\, he has developed a new form of performance that incorporates methods from devised theatre\, dance\, painting\, and socially engaged art. His work has been presented at theatres and galleries internationally\, including the Martha Graham Dance Theater\, La MaMa E.T.C.\, Dixon Place\, The Living Theater\, Movement Research at Judson Church\, the Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance\, the Wild Project\, University Settlement\, and Chashama in New York City\; New Langton Arts and David Cunningham Projects\, San Francisco\; Moyse Theatre at McGill University\, Montreal\; Xavier Hufkens Gallery\, Brussels\; the Emily Harvey Foundation\, Venice\; Universität der Künste\, Berlin\; and FRISE\, Hamburg.\n\nIn this new virtual series\, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political\, social\, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment. Each guest will give a 30 minute presentation\, and then engage in 30 minutes of Q&A. Sessions will take place over Zoom and require advance registration. You can read about the panelists\, register for these events\, find recommended reading and resources and/or request recordings of past events at https://lsa.umich.edu/world-performance.\n\nIf you require an accommodation to participate in this event\, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies\, at 734-936-2777. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Dani Darling - Ark Family Room Series
DESCRIPTION:Dani Darling made her media debut in 1984—as one of a set of triplets born in Ann Arbor. She sang with her sisters as a girl\, and later did stints in a reggae band and in the hip-hop collective The Black Opera. But\, she told the Metro Times\, she wasn't sure hip-hop was the right direction for her: \"I was like\, who am I? So I was trying to figure it out. I'm more of an acoustic artist\, you know. I write with my guitar\, I have a big background in\, like\, old movie musicals and jazz. My favorite vocalist is Ella Fitzgerald\, and Thom Yorke is one of my biggest inspirations.\" A new sound came together\, featuring classic influences like R&B and jazz as well as new sounds like lo-fi and chillwave\, all fused in her own original songs that often have a cosmic tinge. Dani released her debut album\, \"Nocturne\,\" last year. She's a rising star on the Michigan scene\, named an artist to watch by Current last year\, and we're excited to welcome her for her Ark debut in the Family Room.
