SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Film Screening | Artist Spotlight Series: Gariné Torossian
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance to receive the streaming link and to attend the Q/A session with the film director: http://myumi.ch/ZQN9R\n\nThe film will be available for you to watch on your own from September 18 to 23.\n \n In her lush\, intricately constructed works\, Gariné Torossian explores film form\, hybrid film and video technologies\, and themes of belonging\, identity\, and the body. \"Mining a rich palette of colours and textures\, superimpositions and dissolves\, mixing formats of Super 8\, 35mm and video\, [she] creates films that bridge the gaps between visual art\, sound art\, cinema and the rock video\" (Lux Distribution).\n \n Torossian's style of filmmaking draws attention to the most basic component of her work\, the strip of film\, the celluloid on which images are laid to be projected. She alters the photographed images\, transforming them into other objects\; she juxtaposes them\; and she makes them move outside the original photographed movement in ways that create a kind of rich collage\, suggesting another dimension to the moving images with which she began... This Spotlight compilation is highly recommended for academic areas dealing with women in art and film as well as art history and film studies. - Oksana Dykyj\, Educational Media Reviews Online\n \n This special edition includes the following short films:\n 1) Visions\n 2) Girl from Moush\n 3) Drowning in Flames\n 4) Pomegranate Tree\n 5) Sparklehorse\n 6) Babies on the Sun\n 7) Shadowy Encounters\n 8) Hypnotize/Mezmerize - System of a Down\n \nDownload the study guide HERE (http://myumi.ch/WwzAw). It includes an essay by Ian Balfour\, York University.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSEAS Virtual Viewing. *A Thousand Cuts*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”\n\nAbout the movie:\nOn June 15\, 2020\, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel\, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy\, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns\, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in\, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA\, MOTHERLAND).\n\nCosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Understanding Current Issues through Heroines of the Past: Women and Words 1880-1930
DESCRIPTION:A look back to the period 1880-1930 is quite instructive to understand the present moment. Then as now\, there was a pandemic\, more than one serious economic downturn\, sanctioned segregation and assorted other issues. \nThis study group will introduce you to some real heroines such as Jane Addams\, Ida B. Wells-Barnett\, Sarah Winnemucca and Ida Tarbell\, who did amazing feats with literacy\, attempting to address these matters in the Modern period\, using their literacy abilities as exemplars and sponsors of literacy to address social justice issues. Important lessons for contemporary problems arise from the work of these women. Instructor Alice Horning\, professor emerita Oakland University has been studying and teaching about literacy >30 years.\nThe Study Group meets on Wednesdays Sept. 23 to Oct. 14 from 10:00-11:30 a.m. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access this Study Group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:You’re Not Listening\, But It’s Never Too Late to Learn
DESCRIPTION:In her new book\, You’re Not Listening – What You’re Missing and Why It Matters\, Kate Murphy\, Times columnist\, says we don’t know how to listen and it’s harming us. “When was the last time you listened to someone? Really listened\, without thinking about what you wanted to say next\, glancing down at your phone\, or jumping in to offer your opinion? And when was the last time someone really listened to you\, was so attentive to what you were saying and whose response was so perceptive that you felt truly understood”? \n\nTo write this book\, the author spent hundreds of hours interviewing people whose job is listening intensively\; including spies\, priests\, psychotherapists\, bartenders\, hostage negotiators\, hairdressers\, air traffic controllers\, radio producers\, and focus group moderators and delving into the academic research related to listening. But the author also presents many ways that we can improve our listening and offers assurance that it’s never too late to learn. Instructor Mike Murray has spent many years as a psychotherapist\, a “professional listener”. Please read the Introduction and Chapter 1 in order to prepare for our first meeting.\n\nThe study group will meet on Wednesdays from September 23 through November 11. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! This is a free event\, and all are welcome.\n\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Film Discussion | Post-Screening Q/A with Filmmaker Gariné Torossian (Artist Spotlight Series: Gariné Torossian)
- Oksana Dykyj\, Educational Media Reviews Online\n \n Download the study guide HERE (http://myumi.ch/WwzAw). It includes an essay by Ian Balfour\, York University.\n \nGariné Torossian was born in Lebanon to parents of Armenian descent. Growing up in the vibrant Armenian community in Beirut\, Torossian learned about Armenia largely through music and art\, which her family held in high regard. She moved to Canada in 1979. Torossian is a filmmaker and visual artist living and working in Toronto. She is primarily a self-taught filmmaker and photographer. Her early films focused on transformations of the still image to moving image\, followed by an interest in dance\, body movement\, and text. Her primary interests now lie in fiction and storytelling. Torossian’s award-winning works have shown internationally\, including retrospectives at New York’s Museum of Modern Art\, Berlin Arsenal\, Telluride Film Festival\, and Cinematheques in Armenia\, Lebanon\, Canada\, and Germany.\n\nMarie-Aude Baronian is Associate Professor in visual culture and film at the University of Amsterdam where she teaches in the field of media and memory\, film-philosophy\, fashion studies\, and French thought. She has extensively lectured and published on film and visual arts in relation to issues of memory\, archive\, testimony\, and the Armenian diaspora.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:The National Neighborhood Data Archive (NaNDA) is a repository of neighborhood contextual measures -- place-based data that quantifies the physical\, demographic\, economic\, and/or social environment -- used to understand the role of neighborhood context and resources for population health. Most NaNDA contextual measures are created using publicly available data\, such as from the Census Bureau. So why would a researcher use NaNDA instead of going directly to the primary data to obtain or create their own contextual measures? In this session\, we will discuss case studies from the NaNDA repository that augment and recombine publicly available data to create novel measures to study the role of neighborhoods for health and health inequities\n\nThis webinar is part of the 2020 ICPSR Data Fair\, \"Data in Real Life.\" More information about the Data Fair can be found at http://myumi.ch/ICPSRdatafair2020. Please note that all attendees for this session must be registered for the ICPSR Data Fair.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Introduction to Research Computing on the Great Lakes Cluster
DESCRIPTION:OVERVIEW\nIntroduction to Research Computing on the Great Lakes Cluster\n\nThis workshop will introduce you to high performance computing on the Great Lakes cluster. After a brief overview of the components of the cluster and the resources available there\, the main body of the workshop will cover creating batch scripts and the options available to run jobs\, and hands-on experience in submitting\, tracking\, and interpreting the results of submitted jobs. By the end of the workshop\, every participant should have created a submission script\, submitted a job\, tracked its progress\, and collected its output. Additional tools including high-performance data transfer services and interactive use of the cluster will also be covered.\n\nPRE-REQUISITES\nThis course assumes familiarity with the Linux command line as might be obtained from the ARC-TS workshop Introduction to the Linux Command Line. In particular\, participants should understand how files and folders work\, be able to create text files using the nano editor\, and be able to create and remove files and folders. Some exposure to shell input and output redirection and pipes would also be useful.\n\nINSTRUCTORS\nDr. Charles Antonelli\, LSA Technology Services\n\nCharles is a member of the LSA Technology Services Research team at the University of Michigan\, where he is responsible for high performance computing support and education\, and was an Advocate to the Departments of History and Communications. Prior to this\, he built a parallel data ingestion component of a novel earth science data assimilation system\, a secure packet vault\, and worked on the No. 5 ESS Switch at Bell Labs in the 80s. He has taught courses in operating systems\, distributed file systems\, C++ programming\, security\, and database application design.\n\nJohn Thiels\nLSA Technology Services\n\nMATERIALS\nLecture Notes (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1yZCyfBaK9GVCI64oUW-99HtUO5RNwSlqpeUNo8BjgWI/edit#slide=id.p1)\nGreat Lakes Slurm HPC cluster (https://arc-ts.umich.edu/greatlakes/)\nGreat Lakes User Guide (https://arc-ts.umich.edu/greatlakes/user-guide/)\nTwo-page Cheat Sheet (https://arc-ts.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2020/05/Great-Lakes-Cheat-Sheet.pdf)\n\nCOURSE PREPARATION\nIn order to participate successfully in the workshop exercises\, you must have a Great Lakes user login\, a Slurm account\, and be enrolled in Duo. Please use the ‘Campus All traffic’ profile in the Cisco client.\n\nYou will need an ssh client to connect to the Great Lakes cluster. Mac OS X and Linux platforms have this built-in. Here are a couple of choices for Windows platforms:\n\nDownload and install U-M PuTTY/WinSCP from the Compute at the U website (https://its.umich.edu/computing/computers-software/compute). This includes both the PuTTY ssh client and terminal emulator and a graphical file transfer tool in one installer. This document describes how to download and use this software\, except please note you will be connecting to greatlakes.arc-ts.umich.edu instead of the cited host (https://documentation.its.umich.edu/node/350). You must have administrative authority over your computer to install this software.\n\nDownload PuTTY directly from the developer (https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/latest.html). Download the putty.exe application listed under “Alternative binary files\,” then execute the application. You do not need administrative authority over your computer to use this software.\n\nOur Great Lakes User Guide in Section 1.2 describes in more detail how to use PuTTY to connect to Great Lakes (https://arc-ts.umich.edu/greatlakes/user-guide/).\n\nPlease prepare and test your computer’s ability to make remote connections before class\; we cannot stop to debug connection issues during the class.\n\nA Zoom link will be provided to the participants the day before the class. Registration is required. Please note this session will be recorded. \n\nInstructor will be available at the Zoom link\, to be provided\, from 12-1PM for computer setup assistance.\n\nIf you have questions about this workshop\, please send an email to the instructors at hpc-course@umich.edu.\n\nRegister\nTuesday\, September 29\, 2020\, 12-4pm: https://ttc.iss.lsa.umich.edu/ttc/sessions/introduction-to-research-computing-on-the-great-lakes-cluster-2/register/\n\nFriday\, October 2\, 2020\, 12-4pm: https://ttc.iss.lsa.umich.edu/ttc/sessions/introduction-to-research-computing-on-the-great-lakes-cluster-3/register/\n\nWednesday\, October 7\, 2020\, 12-4pm: https://ttc.iss.lsa.umich.edu/ttc/sessions/introduction-to-research-computing-on-the-great-lakes-cluster-2/register/

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Education for Democracy: Building Habits of Civic Engagement
DESCRIPTION:The Covid-19 crisis has highlighted and exacerbated existing racial\, economic\, and health disparities within our communities. It is critical that we prepare students to recognize and challenge current threats to our democracy and to identify ways they can contribute to systemic change. Whether your course content is directly related to civic engagement or not\, actively connecting your discipline to broader systems significantly impacts students’ ability to understand and participate in civic life. \n\nIn this interactive session\, we will share the Pathways to Civic Engagement that offer multiple options for students to develop immediate and long-term habits of civic engagement. Participants will explore how their courses\, research\, and programs can connect with each pathway.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EER Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Much of the conversation on equity and inclusion centers on the need to “increase” something—the marginalized student population\, mentoring programs\, engagement opportunities\, “knowledge” of topics like white privilege. However\, few conversations focus on a much harder truth—that the culture of whiteness and maleness in engineering limits sustained improvement in equity and inclusion efforts of most institutions. Using preliminary findings from their current NSF-funded project called “I-MATTER\,” Drs. Masta and Pawley examine how engineering culture has normalized racism and sexism for underrepresented students in engineering contexts. Through their discussion\, they will highlight the strong need for more BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color) researchers in white spaces\, and encourage white researchers to “stay in their lanes” when approaching equity and inclusion research.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | How Often Do Muon Neutrinos Turn Into Electron Neutrinos?
DESCRIPTION:The properties of the neutrino are imprinted on the evolutionary history of our Universe. In particular\, the mass of the neutrino and its behavior has affected matter dominance\, galactic structure\, heavy element creation\, and many other fundamental characteristics of the cosmos. Towards a complete understanding of the neutrino\, the remaining mysteries mainly revolve around answering a singular question: How often do muon neutrinos turn into electron neutrinos? The multi-faceted answer is one of the keys to bringing us into the age of astroparticle physics\, in which we relate the smallest (particle) and largest (cosmic) scales.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present our work in studying muon-to-electron neutrino mixing at both short and long distances\, utilizing powerful accelerators and ultra-large detectors in the US and Japan.\n
