SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Access and Equity in US School Systems
DESCRIPTION:We will investigate what happens to students’ aspirations and goals from the start of middle school until college graduation\, looking in particular at how these trajectories are impacted by socio-economic factors (SES).  \n\nWe will study the socially constructed barriers that obstruct access to opportunities for lower SES students and the opportunities and supports that are\, conversely\, offered to higher SES students.  Examining the systemic nature of these will help to illuminate the fallacy of the idea of a meritocratic system. We will investigate data\, and strategize about what can be done to make good on the promises we make to our nation’s students about what and who they can be.  We will orient our work toward finding strategies to address systems of oppression and privilege that structure education opportunities.\n\nOur speaker\, Dr. Simona Goldin teaches about the sociology\, history\, and policy of schooling in the United States\, at the University of Michigan’s School of Education. She has studied ways to transform the preparation of beginning teachers to teach in more equitable ways\, and has elaborated the teaching practices that bridge children’s work in schools on academic content with their home and community-based experiences.\n\nThis is the third of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is: Poverty\, Inequity and Disparity. The next lecture will be October 1\, 2020. The title is: The Short-Term and Long-Term Impacts of Health Care Access for Low Income Americans.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. DESCRIPTION:Race and racism will continue to be topics investigated by qualitative research but uncritically explored as factors impacting the inquiry process in and of itself resulting in both being largely invisible and normalized. Critical discussions of race and racism at the interstice of the inquiry process are largely absent but race still matters because we exist in an environment rife with anti-Black racism and White privilege and as human beings we maintain ontological commitments that influence what we study and how. DESCRIPTION:The pursuit among Zainichi Koreans to secure their rights in Japan has a long complex history. Today\, Zainichi Koreans are classified as “Special Permanent Resident Aliens\,” which provides a set of most citizenship rights without having actual Japanese citizenship status. This talk addresses what triggered the extension of citizenship rights to non-citizens in recent decades in Japan and to what extent Zainichi Korean activism influences discourse and reform of citizenship laws in today’s Japan.\n   \nHwaji Shin is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of San Francisco. Shin was born and grew up in Osaka City\, Japan as a third generation Zainichi Korean. Prior to her academic career\, she worked as an independent investigator for NGOs in Japan and developed policy recommendation reports for the municipal government on incorporation of the Korean minority community in Japan as well as outreach efforts for the shelter-less population in Osaka City. She earned her MA and Ph.D. in Sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Her published works address the impact of colonialism and globalization on the citizenship and immigration policies in Japan\, as well as minority activism\, with a special focus on Zainichi Koreans in Japan. She is currently working on her book manuscript that examines the historical trajectory of citizenship and immigration policies\, and its relation to the resistance of the Korean minority in Japan. SUMMARY:Presentation:Segregation within Integrated Schools: Racially Disproportionate Student-Teacher Assignments in Middle Schools
DESCRIPTION:Our study examines trends of racially disproportionate assignment of Black and Hispanic students to less experienced teachers than their white counterparts. Specifically\, our analysis shows statistically significant trends in the assignment of less experienced teachers to Black and Hispanic students in middle school math over several years. This study is the first in education to measure the cumulative pattern of racially disproportionate student-teacher assignments over time. We introduce the Cumulative Deficit index as a measure of cumulative patterns of racially disproportionate student-teacher assignment. DESCRIPTION:Although there are many programs and policies aimed at alleviating poverty\, too often there are gaps between people’s needs and programs’ offers. This workshop explores U-M Poverty Solution’s work on The Detroit Housing Guide\, the Flint Provider Empowerment Program and other interventions designed to fill in these gaps.\n\nStudy Group leaders Kelly Christopherson and Trevor Bechtel will lead the one time study group session.\n\nKelly Chistopherson is completing her MPP at the Ford School at the University of Michigan focusing on public policy analysis methods. She has worked with Poverty Solutions since December of 2019 engaging the Flint Provider Empowerment Program and the Detroit Partnership on Economic Mobility.\n\nTrevor Bechtel joined Poverty Solutions in 2018 after a twenty-year career teaching ethics and religion throughout the Great Lakes Region. DESCRIPTION:IISS is pleased to announce the dissertation workshop \"Reincarnation in the Druze Religion and its Relation to Platonic and Neoplatonic Philosophy\" with Salman Elamir Amir (Middle East Studies).\n   \n   “Like Pythagoras\, Plato and Neoplatonist philosophers\, the Druze believe in metempsychosis. This belief rests on two fundamental principles: (1) the inseparability of body and soul\, and (2) the imperative of divine justice. The Druze base their belief of metempsychosis on the teachings of Hamza ibn ‘Alī (985- 1021 A.D. disappeared)\, the founder of the Druze religion. According to Hamza\, when the soul departs from the body upon death\, it dwells instantly in a newborn human body and not in other species. This restriction is distinctly different from the teachings of Plato and some of the Neoplatonist philosophers who taught that the human soul could enter the body of a beast.\n   \n   In my presentation I will discuss the unique concept of reincarnation in the Druze religion and its relation to Neoplatonic philosophy. I will provide evidence of my hypothesis that Iamblichus’ doctrine of metempsychosis reached Hamza b. ‘Ali via Abū Ya‛qūb al-Sijistānī. Even though some scholars like W. Ivanow and H. Corbin as well as later Islamicists have maintained that al- Sijistānī did not teach metempsychosis\, it will become clear while scrutinizing al-Sijistānī’s works that\, actually\, he was teaching a doctrine of metempsychosis in likelihood traceable to Iamblichus. al-Sijistānī says in Kashf al-Mahjūb : “that the species are preserved\; that metempsychosis (tanāsukh) always proceeds in one and the same species\, never crossing its limits and passing to another species.\n   \n   I’ll first discuss the theory of reincarnation and then share a real-life story of reincarnation from my ethnographic research in Israel this summer. This story will illustrate how reincarnation remains a living tradition in Druze society today\".

DESCRIPTION:Despite liberalization of cannabis laws in 47 states\, ongoing federal prohibition makes it difficult to obtain data from users and producers in different locales to better understand their experiences. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nTitle:\nDrivers’ Allocation of Attention Given Increasingly Autonomous Systems\n\nAbstract:\nSafe transport requires an understanding of the road user\, their intended trip purpose and their perceptions of safety. In today’s driving environment\, the human driver needs to continually switch between driving and non-driving activities. They will adapt their behavior and compensate for any perceived risks given changes in the road\, weather and traffic environment. As vehicles become increasingly autonomous\, human drivers will also become increasingly accustom to the vehicle assuming control and may not attend to the roadway as needed. The attention to safety critical situations is further impacted given increasing interactions with non-driving tasks while traveling. As the number of autonomous systems in our car grows\, the driver’s attention to warnings and alerts diminish\, making them less ready to take back control of the vehicle when the automation fails. This presentation describes some of the studies conducted to assess changes in drivers’ allocation of attention as they switch between driving and non-driving task over the course of their drive. Individual differences are observed given the type of task and task complexity. The implications of these findings for the design of future cars are discussed in this presentation.\n\nBio:\nLinda Ng Boyle is Professor and Chair of the Industrial & Systems Engineering Department at the University of Washington\, Seattle. She has a joint appointment in Civil & Environmental Engineering. She has degrees from the University of Buffalo (BS) and University of Washington (MS\, PhD). SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Webinar: Dam and Sediment in the Hudson
DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of dams built on tributaries of the Hudson River estuary have outlived their usefulness. Removing these relic dams is a priority for the state of New York in order to improve aquatic habitat connectivity\, restore fish spawning grounds\, and reduce the risk of dam failure. To better understand how sediment released by dam removals in the Lower Hudson River watershed will affect the 240 km-long estuary\, including the potential for dam-derived sediments to help build tidal wetland resilience in the face of sea level rise\, the Dams and Sediment in the Hudson (DaSH) project brought together a collaborative team of scientists and stakeholders to research key questions and provide practical tools to regulators and practitioners. \n\nIn this webinar\, project team members will highlight how their multidisciplinary approach - which combined field observations with analyses of sediment transport\, and integrated feedback from a broad coalition of stakeholders - allowed them to answer questions about how dam removal will impact conditions in the estuary. They will share key findings about marsh accretion and introduce a tool they developed that allows engineers and regulators to estimate the amount of sediment stored behind a dam and assess preliminary impacts of sediment release following dam removal. SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Simulation and Modeling of High-Speed Disperse Two-Phase Flows
DESCRIPTION:Jesse Capecelatro \nAssistant Professor \nMechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering\nUniversity of Michigan\n\nDisperse two-phase flows are composed of liquid droplets or solid particles suspended in a carrier fluid. Examples of such flows are numerous within engineering and science. While the past several decades have seen significant progress in developing predictive modeling capabilities\, largely due to the advent of high-performance computing\, the majority of these efforts have focused on dilute suspensions of particles under low-speed (incompressible) conditions. This talk will focus on recent progress towards understanding and predicting particle-laden flows in more extreme environments\, in which gas-phase compressibility and back-coupling from particles to the fluid have an order-one effect. Some relevant examples include solid propellant combustion\, coal dust explosions\, volcanic eruptions\, and the fluidization of regolith from a rocket exhaust plume during planetary/lunar landing. The latter example acts as the primary motivation of this talk. We will examine the fundamental processes of turbulent particle-laden flows\, including state-of-the-art phenomenology from experimental observations\, existing theories\, and simulation techniques. New numerical methods uniquely designed to address this class of flows will be presented\, in addition to high-resolution simulations that allow us to probe turbulence and Mach number effects at the sub-particle scale and at scales that encompass millions of particles.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nJesse Capecelatro is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research group develops numerical methods and data-driven approaches for the prediction and optimization of “messy turbulent flows” relevant to energy and the environment (often multiphase and reacting). Prior to joining Michigan in 2016\, Dr. Capecelatro was a research scientist at the Center for Exascale Simulation of Plasma-coupled Combustion (XPACC) at the University of Illinois. He received a B.S. from SUNY Binghamton in 2009\, a M.S. from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2011\, and a Ph.D. from Cornell in 2014. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award\, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award\, and the ASME Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal Award.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Nicole Ellison\, Karl E Weick Collegiate Professor of Information and Professor of Information\,School of Information.\n\nAbstract: \nScholarship on well-being outcomes of social media use highlights two key mechanisms: social comparison (associated with viewing social media content) and social connectedness (enhanced by direct interaction facilitated by social media platforms). This literature often characterizes view-based social media practices as passive use\, contrasting it with more desirable\, interactive active use such as clicking. However\, we lack deep understanding of how users experience viewing and clicking practices and the empirical relationship between them. Employing a combination of eye tracking\, survey\, and interview methods\, our study (N=42) investigates the non-click—instances where people intentionally and thoughtfully withhold from clicking on content they spend time viewing. Counterintuitively\, we find no difference in viewing duration (as measured by eye gaze) to clicked versus non-clicked Facebook content. We find that use motivations and Facebook feed content are significant predictors of click behavior but measures of overall use\, such as network size or minutes of use per day\, are not. Our interview data reveal three audience-related concerns that contribute to deliberate non-clicking and illustrate how non-clicked content contributes to social connectedness when imported into other channels. DESCRIPTION:Why do we do the things we do? Computational models in Cognitive Science such as Reinforcement Learning often focus on extrinsic motivation. However\, motivational researchers have made a distinction between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation depending on whether motivation comes from outside (extrinsic) or inside (intrinsic) an individual. Research has shown that there is an interesting relationship between extrinsic rewards and intrinsic motivation.
