Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

For a limited time, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”

About the movie:
On June 15, 2020, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA, MOTHERLAND).

Cosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

Access and Equity in US School Systems (September 24, 2020 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/75646 75646-19552866@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 24, 2020 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

We will investigate what happens to students’ aspirations and goals from the start of middle school until college graduation, looking in particular at how these trajectories are impacted by socio-economic factors (SES).

We will study the socially constructed barriers that obstruct access to opportunities for lower SES students and the opportunities and supports that are, conversely, offered to higher SES students. Examining the systemic nature of these will help to illuminate the fallacy of the idea of a meritocratic system. We will investigate data, and strategize about what can be done to make good on the promises we make to our nation’s students about what and who they can be. We will orient our work toward finding strategies to address systems of oppression and privilege that structure education opportunities.

Our speaker, Dr. Simona Goldin teaches about the sociology, history, and policy of schooling in the United States, at the University of Michigan’s School of Education. She has studied ways to transform the preparation of beginning teachers to teach in more equitable ways, and has elaborated the teaching practices that bridge children’s work in schools on academic content with their home and community-based experiences.

This is the third of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is: Poverty, Inequity and Disparity. The next lecture will be October 1, 2020. The title is: The Short-Term and Long-Term Impacts of Health Care Access for Low Income Americans.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

Virtual panel discussion

The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About the Panel:
As the global pandemic drags on and people around the world struggle to find a “new normal,” so many of us find illness, disease, and loss piling on top of natural disasters, financial ruin, and the long-term suffering wrought by systemic racism and injustice. While we feel called to rise to the moment, it’s no wonder that many of us begin to feel hopeless or helpless to do so. This event is designed to renew our capacity to imagine and enact compassion in the face of the widespread suffering we find all around us.

Join us for an exploration of a science-based view of compassion that meets this moment. We bring together a number of experts who study compassion in organizations with practitioners who are leading for compassion now. Each of our panelists will feed our imagination with stories and fuel our capacity for action with small, actionable strategies that you can use right now. Focused on building our capacity for action, this unique panel structure will leave you with a replenished toolkit full of small moves that will help you find ways to rise to the challenges of leading, learning, and teaching with compassion now.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (September 24, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207576@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 24, 2020 11:00am
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists, women artists, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.

Support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS, STARTLING WORKS OF ART, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER

Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American, European, African, and Asian art from across media, sampling the Museum's remarkable, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston, Christo, Theaster Gates, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Do-Ho Suh, Kara Walker, and others, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed, but instead as an active, creative, sometimes startling source of material and ideas, open for debate and interpretation.

On Why Race Still Matters: Ontological Commitments and Researching Without Numbers (September 24, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/76459 76459-19717154@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 24, 2020 11:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research

Race and racism will continue to be topics investigated by qualitative research but uncritically explored as factors impacting the inquiry process in and of itself resulting in both being largely invisible and normalized. Critical discussions of race and racism at the interstice of the inquiry process are largely absent but race still matters because we exist in an environment rife with anti-Black racism and White privilege and as human beings we maintain ontological commitments that influence what we study and how. This session will explore the notion of ontological commitments, what they are, why we need to be attentive to them when researching without numbers.

This webinar is part of the 2020 ICPSR Data Fair, "Data in Real Life." More information about the Data Fair can be found at http://myumi.ch/ICPSRdatafair2020. Please note that all attendees for this session must be registered for the ICPSR Data Fair.

CJS Noon Lecture Series | Contentious Citizenship: Zainichi Korean Activism in Japan (September 24, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/75274 75274-19401011@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 24, 2020 12:00pm

The pursuit among Zainichi Koreans to secure their rights in Japan has a long complex history. Today, Zainichi Koreans are classified as “Special Permanent Resident Aliens,” which provides a set of most citizenship rights without having actual Japanese citizenship status. This talk addresses what triggered the extension of citizenship rights to non-citizens in recent decades in Japan and to what extent Zainichi Korean activism influences discourse and reform of citizenship laws in today’s Japan.

Hwaji Shin is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of San Francisco. Shin was born and grew up in Osaka City, Japan as a third generation Zainichi Korean. Prior to her academic career, she worked as an independent investigator for NGOs in Japan and developed policy recommendation reports for the municipal government on incorporation of the Korean minority community in Japan as well as outreach efforts for the shelter-less population in Osaka City. She earned her MA and Ph.D. in Sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Her published works address the impact of colonialism and globalization on the citizenship and immigration policies in Japan, as well as minority activism, with a special focus on Zainichi Koreans in Japan. She is currently working on her book manuscript that examines the historical trajectory of citizenship and immigration policies, and its relation to the resistance of the Korean minority in Japan. Her research and teaching expertise are centered in political sociology, with an emphasis on social movements, race and ethnicity, categorical and spatial inequality, globalization, colonialism, and the history, theory and sociology of migration, citizenship, and nationalism.

She is the 2020-21 Center for Japanese Studies Toyota Visiting Professor.

Our study examines trends of racially disproportionate assignment of Black and Hispanic students to less experienced teachers than their white counterparts. Specifically, our analysis shows statistically significant trends in the assignment of less experienced teachers to Black and Hispanic students in middle school math over several years. This study is the first in education to measure the cumulative pattern of racially disproportionate student-teacher assignments over time. We introduce the Cumulative Deficit index as a measure of cumulative patterns of racially disproportionate student-teacher assignment. We concluded student race is correlated with exposure to more experienced teachers over time.

In our data-driven world, what are the best ways to engage librarians who are hesitant to work with data-related content and questions? Can we? Must we? Should we? Critical data literacy will be the starting place for the presentation, followed by suggestions for how to engage “non-data” librarians with data training and activities in the library setting. We’ll discuss the issue of how feasible it is to expect universal data savvy, and how to empower librarians to choose their own approaches to the issue, both in the workplace and in their career planning. Finally, we’ll discuss training approaches and availability specifically, and attendees will leave with ideas for a plan of action for future data training in their libraries.

IISS Dissertation Workshop Series. Reincarnation in the Druze Religion and its Relation to Platonic and Neoplatonic Philosophy (September 24, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/77621 77621-19891784@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 24, 2020 1:00pm

IISS is pleased to announce the dissertation workshop "Reincarnation in the Druze Religion and its Relation to Platonic and Neoplatonic Philosophy" with Salman Elamir Amir (Middle East Studies).

“Like Pythagoras, Plato and Neoplatonist philosophers, the Druze believe in metempsychosis. This belief rests on two fundamental principles: (1) the inseparability of body and soul, and (2) the imperative of divine justice. The Druze base their belief of metempsychosis on the teachings of Hamza ibn ‘Alī (985- 1021 A.D. disappeared), the founder of the Druze religion. According to Hamza, when the soul departs from the body upon death, it dwells instantly in a newborn human body and not in other species. This restriction is distinctly different from the teachings of Plato and some of the Neoplatonist philosophers who taught that the human soul could enter the body of a beast.

In my presentation I will discuss the unique concept of reincarnation in the Druze religion and its relation to Neoplatonic philosophy. I will provide evidence of my hypothesis that Iamblichus’ doctrine of metempsychosis reached Hamza b. ‘Ali via Abū Ya‛qūb al-Sijistānī. Even though some scholars like W. Ivanow and H. Corbin as well as later Islamicists have maintained that al- Sijistānī did not teach metempsychosis, it will become clear while scrutinizing al-Sijistānī’s works that, actually, he was teaching a doctrine of metempsychosis in likelihood traceable to Iamblichus. al-Sijistānī says in Kashf al-Mahjūb : “that the species are preserved; that metempsychosis (tanāsukh) always proceeds in one and the same species, never crossing its limits and passing to another species.

I’ll first discuss the theory of reincarnation and then share a real-life story of reincarnation from my ethnographic research in Israel this summer. This story will illustrate how reincarnation remains a living tradition in Druze society today".

Using Cannabis Data to Improve Public Health and Promote Social Equity (September 24, 2020 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/76468 76468-19717161@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 24, 2020 2:00pm

Despite liberalization of cannabis laws in 47 states, ongoing federal prohibition makes it difficult to obtain data from users and producers in different locales to better understand their experiences. As more states legalize cannabis markets, regulators must have access to actionable data to make informed decisions regarding product labeling and how to provide ownership access for communities disproportionately impacted by the drug war. The COVID-19 pandemic has also generated questions about how use patterns have been impacted by shelter-in-place orders. The purpose of this session is to share highlights from cannabis research using survey primary and secondary data to answer these questions about cannabis use and policy impacts in different contexts.

This presentation will include:
- Making Sense of Negative Experiences with Cannabis Edibles: Panel Survey Results
- Cannabis Use and Covid-19
- Cannabis Social Equity Programs

SEMINAR: "Drivers’ Allocation of Attention Given Increasingly Autonomous Systems" — Linda Boyle (September 24, 2020 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/75963 75963-19629763@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 24, 2020 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: U-M Industrial & Operations Engineering

The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.

Title:
Drivers’ Allocation of Attention Given Increasingly Autonomous Systems

Abstract:
Safe transport requires an understanding of the road user, their intended trip purpose and their perceptions of safety. In today’s driving environment, the human driver needs to continually switch between driving and non-driving activities. They will adapt their behavior and compensate for any perceived risks given changes in the road, weather and traffic environment. As vehicles become increasingly autonomous, human drivers will also become increasingly accustom to the vehicle assuming control and may not attend to the roadway as needed. The attention to safety critical situations is further impacted given increasing interactions with non-driving tasks while traveling. As the number of autonomous systems in our car grows, the driver’s attention to warnings and alerts diminish, making them less ready to take back control of the vehicle when the automation fails. This presentation describes some of the studies conducted to assess changes in drivers’ allocation of attention as they switch between driving and non-driving task over the course of their drive. Individual differences are observed given the type of task and task complexity. The implications of these findings for the design of future cars are discussed in this presentation.

Bio:
Linda Ng Boyle is Professor and Chair of the Industrial & Systems Engineering Department at the University of Washington, Seattle. She has a joint appointment in Civil & Environmental Engineering. She has degrees from the University of Buffalo (BS) and University of Washington (MS, PhD). She is an organizer for the International Symposium on Human Factors in Driving Assessment and co-author of the textbook, “Designing for People: An Introduction to Human Factors Engineering.” Her area of expertise is in human factors and transportation safety.

TITLE: Ruminations on a career in industry, government and academia

ABSTRACT: I have been blessed with a broad range of professional opportunities in engineering during my career. These ranged from research, systems engineering and management responsibilities at a major aerospace firm, TRW, to appointment as Secretary of the Navy, and most recently, Professor of Practice at the College of Engineering. As a Professor of Practice, I was motivated to look back at my career and assess what experiences proved to be most valuable in enabling me to contribute to my profession and take on additional responsibilities. While many of these experiences have to be lived to obtain full value, I have tried to incorporate some of the more valuable lessons learned into my courses.
I will start off my Spencer lecture with a recap of my career, adding to the normal biographical notes my rationale for the more significant job changes that I took on. Following that, I will highlight some of the particularly valuable lessons learned, putting them into the appropriate programmatic and political context. This personal, intellectual history will include consideration of experiences gleaned from international engagements as well as my US based activities. Lastly, I will attempt to integrate all of these experiences and provide some general recommendations for both students and faculty present.

Hundreds of dams built on tributaries of the Hudson River estuary have outlived their usefulness. Removing these relic dams is a priority for the state of New York in order to improve aquatic habitat connectivity, restore fish spawning grounds, and reduce the risk of dam failure. To better understand how sediment released by dam removals in the Lower Hudson River watershed will affect the 240 km-long estuary, including the potential for dam-derived sediments to help build tidal wetland resilience in the face of sea level rise, the Dams and Sediment in the Hudson (DaSH) project brought together a collaborative team of scientists and stakeholders to research key questions and provide practical tools to regulators and practitioners.

In this webinar, project team members will highlight how their multidisciplinary approach - which combined field observations with analyses of sediment transport, and integrated feedback from a broad coalition of stakeholders - allowed them to answer questions about how dam removal will impact conditions in the estuary. They will share key findings about marsh accretion and introduce a tool they developed that allows engineers and regulators to estimate the amount of sediment stored behind a dam and assess preliminary impacts of sediment release following dam removal. To learn about their findings and tools visit the DasH project page.

Assistant Professor
Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering
University of Michigan

Disperse two-phase flows are composed of liquid droplets or solid particles suspended in a carrier fluid. Examples of such flows are numerous within engineering and science. While the past several decades have seen significant progress in developing predictive modeling capabilities, largely due to the advent of high-performance computing, the majority of these efforts have focused on dilute suspensions of particles under low-speed (incompressible) conditions. This talk will focus on recent progress towards understanding and predicting particle-laden flows in more extreme environments, in which gas-phase compressibility and back-coupling from particles to the fluid have an order-one effect. Some relevant examples include solid propellant combustion, coal dust explosions, volcanic eruptions, and the fluidization of regolith from a rocket exhaust plume during planetary/lunar landing. The latter example acts as the primary motivation of this talk. We will examine the fundamental processes of turbulent particle-laden flows, including state-of-the-art phenomenology from experimental observations, existing theories, and simulation techniques. New numerical methods uniquely designed to address this class of flows will be presented, in addition to high-resolution simulations that allow us to probe turbulence and Mach number effects at the sub-particle scale and at scales that encompass millions of particles.

About the speaker...

Jesse Capecelatro is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research group develops numerical methods and data-driven approaches for the prediction and optimization of “messy turbulent flows” relevant to energy and the environment (often multiphase and reacting). Prior to joining Michigan in 2016, Dr. Capecelatro was a research scientist at the Center for Exascale Simulation of Plasma-coupled Combustion (XPACC) at the University of Illinois. He received a B.S. from SUNY Binghamton in 2009, a M.S. from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2011, and a Ph.D. from Cornell in 2014. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, and the ASME Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal Award.

Abstract:
Scholarship on well-being outcomes of social media use highlights two key mechanisms: social comparison (associated with viewing social media content) and social connectedness (enhanced by direct interaction facilitated by social media platforms). This literature often characterizes view-based social media practices as passive use, contrasting it with more desirable, interactive active use such as clicking. However, we lack deep understanding of how users experience viewing and clicking practices and the empirical relationship between them. Employing a combination of eye tracking, survey, and interview methods, our study (N=42) investigates the non-click—instances where people intentionally and thoughtfully withhold from clicking on content they spend time viewing. Counterintuitively, we find no difference in viewing duration (as measured by eye gaze) to clicked versus non-clicked Facebook content. We find that use motivations and Facebook feed content are significant predictors of click behavior but measures of overall use, such as network size or minutes of use per day, are not. Our interview data reveal three audience-related concerns that contribute to deliberate non-clicking and illustrate how non-clicked content contributes to social connectedness when imported into other channels. We discuss implications for researchers, users, and designers.

Why do we do the things we do? Computational models in Cognitive Science such as Reinforcement Learning often focus on extrinsic motivation. However, motivational researchers have made a distinction between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation depending on whether motivation comes from outside (extrinsic) or inside (intrinsic) an individual. Research has shown that there is an interesting relationship between extrinsic rewards and intrinsic motivation. Based on this relationship, we will discuss how to effectively use external rewards to motivate behaviors.

Learn about the evolution of Jewish life on the U-M campus from the late 1890s to the end of World War II. Join us for this *Making Michigan* event, as Terry McDonald and Gary Krenz from the Bentley Historical Library talk with authors Andrei Markovits and Kenneth Garner about their new book, *The Boundaries of Pluralism: The World of the University of Michigan's Jewish Students from 1897-1945.* The conversation will cover how Jewish students lived at the University of Michigan, how they were integrated by and large, how they made U-M a good place for them but also how there were limits to this bliss, as the University's commendable pluralism in terms of accepting others, Jews in particular, had its serious limits when it came to Jewish students from the East Coast with leftist political preferences.

This conversation is the first in the 2020-21 Making Michigan series.

Journey through the Syrian-Pacific with your own personal dragoman Omar Offendum, along with his partner-in-thyme Thanks Joey. This Shamreeki sonic saga is equal parts nostalgic and futuristic. Featuring samples from some iconic Syrian films, and a dizzying dose of Damascene bilingualism, Lost In Translation is a celebratory love-letter to this very merry and hairy Arabian way of life in the California Califate of Los Shamgeles.
