SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSEAS Virtual Viewing. *A Thousand Cuts*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”\n\nAbout the movie:\nOn June 15\, 2020\, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel\, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy\, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns\, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in\, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA\, MOTHERLAND).\n\nCosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! This is a free event\, and all are welcome.\n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Modularity of supersymmetric partition functions
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will present a novel modular property of 4d N=1 supersymmetric partition functions of supersymmetric theories with R-symmetry. It is a generalization of the modular invariance of the supersymmetric partition function of two-dimensional supersymmetric theories on a torus i.e. of the elliptic genus. It comes from requiring consistency of partition functions under gluing and\, among other things\, can be used to rederive the supersymmetric Cardy formula for four-dimensional gauge theories that has played a key role in computing the entropy of supersymmetric black holes.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:EIHS Symposium: Practices of Decolonization
DESCRIPTION:What is decolonization? What does it mean and what does it entail? These questions and more have emerged center-stage in recent years with a spate of new academic scholarship on decolonization as well as from the politically vibrant clamor on the streets. The latter ranges from #RhodesMustFall to Standing Rock and the recent global iterations of #BlackLivesMatter. At stake is a vastly expanded understanding of the histories of colonialism. The effects are\, of course\, not just out there in the colonies\, but also in the erstwhile imperial centers. The consequences were never just political and economic but also social and cultural. And colonialism is not just a matter of the past\; it persists well into the present. The resulting push back against colonialism has produced a reanimation of the myriad uses of the term decolonization: as an axial event of the twentieth century\; a more long-term and ongoing political process\; a metaphor and a method\; and as a distinctive project for the repatriation of Indigenous lands.\n\nOur panel of scholars will explore the meaning of decolonization from within their respective fields. Our Q&A format will help to navigate the tensions and contradictions between different uses of the term as well as to reflect on its continued usefulness for scholarly analysis.\n\nPanelists:\nSascha Crasnow (Lecturer\, Residential College\, University of Michigan)\nAndrew Herscher (Associate Professor\; Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, History of Art\, Slavic Languages and Literatures\; University of Michigan)\nDerek Peterson (Professor\, History and Afroamerican and African Culture\, University of Michigan)\nMichael Witgen (Professor\, History and American Culture\, University of Michigan)\nMrinalini Sinha\, chair (Alice Freeman Palmer Professor of History\, University of Michigan)\n\nFree and open to the public. This is a remote event and will take place online via Zoom. Please register here in advance: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_cjGxgypqT0G-fx6lXEVKzQ\n\nThis event is part of the Friday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.\n\nImage: \"Decolonization Is Not A Metaphor\,\" Kyle Goen\, 2016. SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Giving Voice to a Foxtrot from Auschwitz- Birkenau
DESCRIPTION:In November 2018\, the Contemporary Directions Ensemble\, directed by Oriol Sans\, performed a foxtrot called “The Most Beautiful Time of Life” (Die schönste Zeit des Lebens) to a sold- out audience at the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. Audience-goers were treated to a rare glimpse of this piece as it had last been performed – more than 75 years ago in a far different setting. Based on a manuscript Patricia Hall researched at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum\, this piece was arranged and copied by concentration camp prisoners and had not been performed since 1942 or 1943.\n\nThe School of Music\, Theatre & Dance created a video highlighting the project and its significance\, garnering U-M a Michigan Emmy in 2019. Patricia gave interviews on National Public Radio\, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation\, and the BBC\, and an Associated Press story highlighting this project appeared in Detroit Free Press\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and more than 1100 other news outlets in 22 countries.\n\nDuring her talk\, Instructor Patricia Hall will be describing the process of preparing this concert—from manuscript to performance. She will also talk about her most recent work in the Collections Department of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. \n\nThis study group will he held on September 25. \n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Minicolloquium | Bound State Structure and Formation in Quantum Chromodynamics
DESCRIPTION:Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is the quantum field theory describing the strong interaction\, which binds quarks and gluons into hadrons\, the “atoms” of QCD. Due to a property known as confinement\, quarks and gluons can never be observed in isolation but rather only in bound states\, adding challenge but also rich complexity to the study of QCD. The Aidala group’s research focuses on the internal structure of the proton\, in particular on spin-spin and spin-momentum correlations within the proton\, and recently extended their work to study additionally the mechanisms by which scattered quarks and gluons form new hadronic bound states. The group’s activities on the PHENIX and sPHENIX experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and as part of the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider will be discussed. Prospects for the future Electron-Ion Collider to be built at Brookhaven National Lab will furthermore be presented.\n

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Fall 2020 - AE285 Seminar Series\, Stealth…An Airplane Design Challenge\, Grant Carichner\, California Polytechnic State University
DESCRIPTION:Grant Carichner\nAdjunct Professor\nCalifornia Polytechnic State University\n\nIn any combat scenario it is advantageous to be invisible or nearly invisible to your adversary (recall Desert Storm/bombing of Baghdad in 1991). In any situation it is very important to limit your opponent’s ability to harm you. More than 50 years ago initial stealth efforts focused on incorporating materials into an airplane’s design to reduce radar signatures. This proved to be a difficult and elusive goal. Today ‘stealth’ is designed into virtually every military vehicle.\n\nThis seminar will review the history of early stealth efforts and conclude with where the state-of-the-art is today. Air vehicles will be the main focus but it will also become clear that stealth is being added to the designs of land and sea vehicles as well. In this discussion reducing the ‘signature’ of an air vehicle to radar will be the primary focus. However\, it should be recognized that IR (infrared)\, audible\, and visual signatures can also be very important. They will be introduced with little discussion. Ultimately\, the goal is to have a vehicle survive and be able to fly tomorrow’s missions or successfully penetrate enemy positions to destroy its target. Stealth is a major component of survivability but it is not the only one. What was the first stealth airplane? You may be surprised to learn the answer.\n\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nMr. Carichner went to work for the Lockheed Skunk Works after earning his BS Engr and MS Engr degrees from UCLA. He retired in 2013 after 48 years at the Skunk Works where he worked on most of the company’s high-profile programs. During his career he started out as an aerodynamicist and eventually became Head of Aerodynamics for the Skunk Works. Future program assignments were either Chief Engineer or Program Manager positions. As Chief Engineer for the JASSM Program he was selected as Lockheed’s Inventor of the Year.\n\nThe last 15 years of his career were dedicated to lighter-than-air designs. He created the Aerocraft Program whose design resulted in a hybrid airship demonstrator that had many airplane flight characteristics that has changed the course of future airship design. \n\nCurrently\, Mr. Carichner teaches Airplane Design at Cal Poly Pomona\nMr. Carichner has written two textbooks. One on airplane design and another on airship design. Both books are published by the AIAA.\n\nFundamentals of Aircraft and Airship Design: Volume I - Aircraft Design\nFundamentals of Aircraft and Airship Design: Volume II - Airship Design and Case Studies

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum: Cerebellum and Cognition
DESCRIPTION:The cerebellum is well-known for its contribution to the control of skilled movement. The mechanisms include connectivity with the motor system and the ability of it’s remarkable circuitry to store motor memories\, including those relating to simple conditioned motor responses acquired through Pavlovian conditioning. However\, some cerebellar circuitry communicates with the prefrontal cortex – including areas of that have important roles in cognitive function but little to do with motor control. In this lecture I draw from theoretical neurobiology\, anatomy\, brain evolution and neuroimaging to address the ways in which cerebellar circuits might contribute to the skilled execution of cognitive operations\, such as the instrumental learning of contingencies that link decisions with their antecedents and consequences.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women's Vote
DESCRIPTION:Organized by AIGA in partnership with League of Women Voters\n\n2020 marks the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, granting women the right to vote in 1920. It was the first legislation for women’s voting rights. Not until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 were voting rights of ALL women protected and enforced\, and intimidation tactics progressively eliminated.  The Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote poster campaign\, organized by AIGA in partnership with the League of Women Voters\, commemorates this milestone. A core group of invited women of design submitted the first 65 non-partisan posters\, to launch the initiative with their vision and voices. Through the posters\, these women joined forces to collectively contribute to dialogue in design and society. This moment in history is an incredible opportunity to catalyze women in design\, voting rights\, citizenship\, community\, and diversity. The collection aspires to not only support present day voter participation\, but to also serve as a backdrop for discourse and examination of the history of voting rights and women’s fight for equality.  The poster initiative continues at aiga.org/vote\, where AIGA members can contribute posters to motivate the American public to register and turn out to vote in the 2020 general election\, as well as local elections to come. Posters are available for free download online.\n\nThe Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote exhibition at Stamps Gallery includes a selection of the 65 posters chosen by a committee of Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Nicholas Dowgwillo\, Eloise Janssen\, Keesa V. Johnson\, Francis Nunoo-Quarcoo\, Endi Poskovic\, Destini Riley\, and Stamps Gallery. The exhibition includes posters by Audrey Bennett\, Johanna Björk\, Karen Cheng\, Emily Comfort\, Jenny El-Shamy\, Dinah Fried\, Karin Fong\, Anne M. Giangiulio\, Annabelle Gould\, Brockett Horne\, Meena Khalili\, nicole killian + shawné michaelain holloway\, Karen Kurycki\, Marty Maxwell Lane\, Zuzana Licko\, Ana Llorente\, Beatriz Lozano\, Kelly Salchow MacArthur\, Rebeca Mendez\, Lana Rigsby\, Kaleena Sales\, Renee Seward\, Laurel Shoemaker\, Nancy Sklolos\,  Hannah Smotrich\, Shanti Sparrow\, Jennifer Sterling\, Fearn de Vicq\, Cymone Wilder\, and Lynne Yun.\n\nFall 2020 Hours and Policies\nBeginning September 15\, 2020\, Stamps Gallery will be open to University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 pm.\nAll visitors must have a valid M-Card to enter Stamps Gallery. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations by Heidi Kumao
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is pleased to present Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations\, a solo exhibition of narrative fabric works and experimental animations by Stamps Professor Heidi Kumao.\n\nUsing fabric cutouts and machine and hand stitching on industrial felt\, Kumao gives physical form to the intangible dynamics underlying ordinary conversations and relationships from a feminist perspective. Intentionally minimal\, each image distills an interaction\, traumatic incident\, or power imbalance into an accessible visual narrative. Recognizable objects such as chairs\, roots\, ladders\, or spotlights set the stage for the story to unfold. Events are captured midstream\, suspended in time like a felt film still.\n\nThe exhibition is inspired\, in part\, by the courage\, testimony\, and experiences of women (like Christine Blasey Ford) who publicly report assault\, harassment\, or misconduct. The #MeToo movement gave voice to thousands of women to tell their personal stories\, but also exposed a hostile backlash meant to silence them. The title\, “Real and Imagined\,” is a deliberate contradiction\; if one is true\, the other must not be. In practice\, however\, both terms are used to reference a woman’s testimony and determine how it is publicly interpreted. Her account is accepted as truthful by many and simultaneously dismissed as imaginary by the court of public opinion: “her memory is wrong\,” “she imagined it.”\n\nThe works in “Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations” make difficult conversations and relationships tangible by stripping them down to their essentials.\n\nWordless physical gestures highlight the psychological and emotional forces at play behind even the smallest of interactions.\n\nBiography\nHeidi Kumao has created award-winning experimental films\, video installations\, cinema machines\, electronic clothing\, and kinetic sculptures. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including shows at Art Science Museum Singapore\, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona\, Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona)\, and Museu da Imagem e do Som (São Paulo). She has received fellowships from the Creative Capital Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a professor at the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nFall 2020 Hours and Policies\nBeginning September 15\, 2020\, Stamps Gallery will be open to University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 pm.\nAll visitors must have a valid M-Card to enter Stamps Gallery. SUMMARY:Auditions:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition\n\nStamps Gallery is proud to kick-off the fall semester with Respond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Student Poster & Video Exhibition\, which brings together powerful posters and playful videos made by the students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.\n\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the stakeholders in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We found inspiration in the thoughtful words of renowned civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis (1940-2020) who wrote\, “My fellow Americans\, this is a special moment in our history. Just as people of all faiths and no faiths\, and all backgrounds\, creeds\, and colors banded together decades ago to fight for equality and justice in a peaceful\, orderly\, non-violent fashion\, we must do so again.” His powerful words are a reminder for all of us - present and future generations to stay hopeful\, proactive\, and resilient in our collective efforts to end racial discrimination and foster a true democracy. \n\nIn this spirit\, Stamps Gallery invited the undergraduate and graduate students at Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, to design posters and make videos to respond and contemplate what each of us can do to build a stronger community\, one that is based on the values of racial equality\, justice and belonging. How can we acknowledge our own biases\, learn from each other\, and listen to the voices of those that have been silenced? We are at a pivotal moment in our history as the pandemic radically transforms everyday life. Through this exhibition Stamps Gallery asks the UM community to come together as artists and audiences and envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging and empathy.\n\nRespond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition includes work by Emily Albright\, Adriana Alcala\, Nathan Byrne\, David Forsee\, Eloise Jansenn\, Rey Jeong\, Sohyun Lim\, Anika Love\, Maggie McConnell\, Willian Minzer\, Judah Premble\, Casey Rheault\, Natalia Rocafuerte\, Jenna Scheen\, Ellie Schmidt\, Abigail Seguin\, LaKyla Thomas\, Elijah Thompson\, Benjamin Winans\, and Molly Wu.\n\nArtwork was selected through an open call by a committee of Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Nicholas Dowgwillo\, Eloise Janssen\, Keesa V. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Theory: Dynamic Contracting with Flexible Monitoring (Joint work with Liang Dai and Yenan Wang)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe study a dynamic contracting problem in which the principal can allocate his limited capacity between seeking evidence that confirms or that contradicts the agent's effort\, as the basis for reward or punishment. Such flexibility calls for jointly designed monitoring and compensation schemes practically relevant but novel in the literature. When the agent's continuation value is low\, the principal seeks only confirmatory evidence\, but when the agent's continuation value exceeds a threshold\, the principal switches to seeking mainly contradictory evidence. Moreover\, the agent's effort can be perpetuated if and only if both synergy and flexibility in monitoring are sufficiently large.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Interdisciplinary Workshop in American Politics (IWAP)
DESCRIPTION:Princess Williams will present her job talk: \"The Politics of Place: How Southern Identity Shapes Americans' Racial Attitudes and Policy Preferences.\"\n\nABSTRACT: This project investigates the role of place-based identification in influencing Americans’ racial attitudes and policy preferences. Specifically\, I argue that Southern identity (i.e.\, identification with the American South) is an influential but omitted factor in the study of political behavior across racial groups. In this project\, I create a novel measurement of Southern identity and assess its impact on public opinion. Contrary to the extant literature\, this work argues that Southern identity has political consequences for the opinion formation of Black Americans as well as for White Americans. I expect that Southern identity will be associated with group-centric racial beliefs reflecting the perceived communalistic nature of Southern culture. Analyses from three original surveys suggest that Southern identity influences both Black and Whites to adopt distinct racial beliefs different from their non- southern racial group members. These results hint at a challenge to the claim that Southern identity among Black Americans is not as politically relevant as it is for White Americans. This work also speaks to the need for more nuanced approaches to understanding American’s racial beliefs across race and place.\n\nThe Interdisciplinary Workshop on American Politics (IWAP) is a forum for the presentation of ongoing interdisciplinary research in American politics. Most of our presentations are given by graduate students. Each graduate student presenter is assigned a faculty and student discussant. IWAP circulates the work beforehand and the student presents it briefly at the start of the meeting. After discussant feedback\, the bulk of the time is reserved for group discussion among all workshop participants. This format leads to informal yet highly interactive and productive conversations.\n\nEmail zcwalker@umich.edu/ for meeting link.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: \"Rethinking Race and Place and its Role in Achieving Social Justice in Linguistics\" (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The Linguistics Department colloquium series begins Friday\, September 25\, with a virtual talk by Sharese King\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago. Dr. King will present \"Rethinking Race and Place and its Role in Achieving Social Justice in Linguistics.\" \n\nDr. King is a sociolinguist interested in the relationship between race\, place\, and language variation. She explores how African Americans use language to construct multidimensional identities and how these constructions are perceived and evaluated across different listener populations. Drawing on both ethnographic and experimental techniques\, her work explores both the linguistic construction of race and the ways in which language is racialized. \n\nABSTRACT\n\nRecent explorations of regional variation across African American speech communities have brought to the forefront the linguistic heterogeneity across African American Language (AAL). Having problematized the presentation of AAL as a uniform variety (Wolfram 2007\; 2015)\, intra-group analyses highlight the diverse social and linguistic constructions among African American speakers. In this talk\, I zoom in on three personae local to the African American community in Rochester\, New York\, contextualizing each style against the backdrop of a post-industrial city in the Rustbelt region. I investigate how the three personae\, The Mobile Professional\, The Hood Kid\, and The Biker recruit or reject vocalic patterns of the Northern Cities Shift\, as well as to construct identities relevant to their social landscape. The findings challenge how we define the dialect\, while also complicating our understanding of the relationship between race\, identity\, and language. Further\, this work imagines more ways to enact social justice in the study of variationism by expanding our representation of African Americans' multidimensional identities.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CSAS Lecture Series | Networked Bollywood: Star Power and the Global Flows of Indian Cinema
DESCRIPTION:From Raj Kapoor to Aamir Khan\, Bollywood stars have possessed cross-over appeal in varied transnational spaces\, ranging from remote areas in Azerbaijan and Egypt to the cosmopolitan regions of Germany and China. Concurrently\, production companies led by these popular stars are among the largest and most profitable in Bollywood. Star-led productions have therefore been key enablers of Hindi cinema’s transnational flows and global expansion. This project argues that within the Bollywood network stars possess “switching power”. Star switching power is constituted by the star’s effective power and centrality within the Bollywood network as key industry nodes\, as well as their affective power as stars and celebrities. This power accords them the ability connect a diverse range of nodes\, networks and hubs to enable the global flows of Hindi cinema. In order to explore these issues\, this project initiates an interdisciplinary exploration of star power that brings together sociology\, affect\, industry studies\, cultural policy and politics.\n\nZoom registration is required and you may do so here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_PrWr39aIRXqbGvycG8fmgw\n \n Dr. Swapnil Rai is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Film\, Television and Media at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Dr. Kate Stone: Sensory Experiences
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kate Stone has spent the last decade on a journey of discovery from the world of science to creative design. Her focus on moving electrons eventually led to the creation of her groundbreaking company\, Novalia\, where she has developed a new technology platform to create products that are a delightful blend of being magical\, old fashioned and futuristic.  Dr. Stone believes the future will look more like the past than the present due to our natural mix of nostalgia and futuristic stargazing. At Novalia\, she and her team use ordinary printing presses to manufacture interactive electronics\, which combine touch-sensitive ink technology and printed circuits into unique and cost-effective products. Most recently she and her team have created experiences for large brands as part of advertising campaigns\, working with Pizza Hut\, McDonalds\, Bud Light\, Hershey’s and IKEA.  They are presently working on a children’s toy called Touchscape: a board game-like surface that connects to Amazon’s Alexa.\n\nDr. Stone is from the UK\, however she now lives in Woodstock\, New York and has a degree in electronics from Salford University and PhD in physics from Cambridge University but believes the most useful things she learnt in life were discovered during her travels through Australia and Asia and in particular working on a sheep farm in the Australian outback. Stone sees herself as a “creative scientist\,” blending art and science to create startling fusions of new and old technology. In addition to her work with Novalia\, Stone is a member of the Editors Code of Practice committee. Dr. Stone asks us to consider: what future world do we want build to live in? What is our mind? Do we need technology at all? How can we build resilience into our everyday life? \n\nHow to Watch\n\nAll speaker series events will be webcast on Fridays at 8 pm EST at http://pennystampsevents.org and at https://www.dptv.org/programs/arts-culture/penny-stamps-series/ starting Friday\, September 18. You can also watch the talks and join the conversation on the Penny Stamps Series Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/PennyStampsSeries/.\n\nNotice of uncensored content\n\nIn accordance with the University of Michigan’s Standard Practice Guidelines on “Freedom of Speech and Artistic Expression\,” the Penny Stamps Speaker Series does not censor our speakers or their content.
