Despite increasing recognition of the diversity in children's living arrangements most research continues to focus on the nuclear family. This talk draws on a number of published and papers in progress that focus on shared living arrangements of children in the U.S. - examining the people children live with beyond their nuclear family. I will describe trends in household extension over time and across the child's life course showing differences by key demographic groups and patterns of coresidence. I find that although shared living arrangements among children have become more common over the last 20 years, this increase is nearly entirely driven by an increase in multigenerational\/three-generation family households (grandparent, parent and child). In 1980, 5% of children lived in a multigenerational household and today nearly 10% do likewise. I'll present results of decomposition analyses that examine the factors that have led to this large increase. By understanding the diverse nature of children's living arrangements and how these arrangements are changing over time, we can better consider how public policies and programs might better support children's development.\r\n\r\nBIO:\r\nNatasha Pilkauskas is an assistant professor of public policy at the Ford School. Pilkauskas' research considers how social policy might improve the developmental and life trajectories of low-income children. Much of her research focuses on the living arrangements of low-income children, especially those who live with grandparents. Past and current projects also investigate the role of family\/kin transfers in helping families make ends meet; links between maternal employment and school outcomes; the effectiveness of the Earned Income Tax Credit; and the effects of the Great Recession on low-income households. Bountiful neurolinguistics evidence shows that people invoke prediction during sentence processing through ERPs (Kutas et al 2014), and that these predictions are conditioned by the identity of the speaker, as early as 200-300 milliseconds after the beginning of a word(van Berkum et al 2008). However, ideologies about standard language in the U.S. often posit Standardized American English (SdAE) as a morally superior variety (Hill 2008). This hierarchical treatment of language varieties leads to negative perceptions of minoritized language varieties, such as AAE, which in turn makes them stigmatized, and ultimately perpetuates minoritized language discrimination. Thus, the first two studies ask, does positing SdAE as superior lead us to treat all minoritized language varieties equally, or do people have language variety-specific expectations? We test this using two EEG experiments. The final study (in progress) examines how the influence of varied linguistic knowledge modulates perception and online processing of AAE, as indexed by responses elicited from a virtual eye-tracking study. This final study seeks to understand how listeners of varied knowledges process linguistic variation in AAE & SdAE, and also brings together eye-tracking and emotion, expanding upon previous research which shows that various cultural groups are differently sensitive to emotional differences expressed in language, and arguably, through prosody (Weissler & Boland 2019). With this dissertation, I want to enhance the linguistics field by tapping into the find-grained knowledge correlates that listeners bring with them when processing language, specifically AAE. I also want to make the connection between language knowledge and racialization based on that language knowledge.This work has implications not only for intracultural perception, but more broadly, for understanding the functionality of the human language faculty in general. Ultimately, perceptions of stigmatized languages and language varieties leads to language discrimination, which affects the way speakers, people, are treated in their day to day lives. One or more surveys have been conducted in 15 different Arab countries. About 75,000 adult men and women have been interviewed. Beginning with the second wave, conducted in 10 countries in 2010-2011, at the time of the Arab Spring, and culminating with the fifth and most recent wave, conducted in 12 countries in 2018-2019, the lecture will present selected findings about continuity and change in the views of Arab publics. Matin is completing her final semester of law school at Michigan State University College of Law. Her team focuses their efforts on marketing-shaping interventions, like volume guarantees, across low\/middle income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. Prior to CHAI, she worked in business development for Boston Consulting Group\u2019s (BCG) healthcare and private equity practice areas. (In between leaving BCG and joining CHAI, she spent five months traveling in Asia, which she highly recommends.)
