Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

For a limited time, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”

About the movie:
On June 15, 2020, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA, MOTHERLAND).

Cosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (September 30, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207581@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 30, 2020 11:00am
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists, women artists, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.

Support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS, STARTLING WORKS OF ART, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER

Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American, European, African, and Asian art from across media, sampling the Museum's remarkable, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston, Christo, Theaster Gates, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Do-Ho Suh, Kara Walker, and others, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed, but instead as an active, creative, sometimes startling source of material and ideas, open for debate and interpretation.

Read the exhibition press release here.

America’s Mayors on Crisis and Change (September 30, 2020 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/76948 76948-19780538@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 30, 2020 11:30am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Poverty Solutions

This year has tested mayoral leadership like no other. Join us to learn from four leading mayors how they respond tactically to emergent crises while sustaining progress toward long-term goals.

The epidemiological and economic crises associated with the coronavirus pandemic have posed new challenges and opportunities for mayoral leadership. So has the movement for racial justice, which has intensified pressure on mayors from within and beyond their cities. Meanwhile, municipal leadership is key for long-term change on issues such as climate change, social equity, transportation, and economic opportunity.

Jointly hosted by the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning and Poverty Solutions, the forum engages our campus-wide Democracy & Debate Theme Semester by addressing some of the most salient issues in this intense and high-stakes election season. This panel brings together U.S. mayors from across the country for a conversation that explores the agency of mayors in matters of national significance.

Participants:
Jacob Frey (Minneapolis, MN)
Lori Lightfoot (Chicago, IL)
Libby Schaaf (Oakland, CA)
Michael Tubbs (Stockton, CA)

Moderated by Taubman College Dean Jonathan Massey, with a special welcome by University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel.

Ayelet Brinn (University of Pennsylvania): "Conversion, Translation, and Adaptation: Abraham Cahan's Mediation Between the American Anglophone and Yiddish Press"
Yaakov Herskovitz (Hebrew University Jerusalem): "He shoots paper out of a copier, as is the custom of America!": Hebrew vs. American Writing in a Feuilleton by Yosef Hayim Brenner.

You are invited to attend the first in a series of online workshops that explores the relationship between the feuilleton and modern Jewish cultures. These workshops, which will occur in fall 2020 and spring 2021, hope to shed light on the interaction between translation and multilingual feuilleton texts as they arise in certain national and linguistic contexts and travel, often through translation, to others often worlds apart. For those unfamiliar with the project: these workshops are part of the larger, ongoing project to chart the historical, cultural, geographical, and textual development of Jewish feuilletons and feuilletonists across the globe. For more information and past events, please visit our website: http://www.feuilletonproject.org./

Format: Speakers will provide contextual information on their text and offer a brief interpretation of the text. Question and answer as well as open discussion will follow the talks with the goal of building connections to other contexts and texts within the study of modern Jewish cultures. Text materials, both in original and in partial translation, will be available a week prior to the event.

To ensure a collegial workshop atmosphere, we ask kindly that you RSVP via email to Kelsey Keeves (js-event-coord@umich.edu) with your name and email address. You will receive a Zoom link and copies of texts and translations for the workshop.

COURSE PREPARATION
In order to participate successfully in the workshop exercises, you must have a Great Lakes user login, a Slurm account, and be enrolled in Duo. The user login allows you to log in to the cluster, create, compile, and test applications, and prepare jobs for submission. The Slurm account allows you to submit those jobs, executing the applications in parallel on the cluster and charging their resource use to the account. Duo is required to help authenticate you to the cluster.

USER LOGIN
If you already have a Great Lakes user login, you don’t need to do anything. Otherwise, go to the application page at http://arc-ts.umich.edu/login-request/ to request a Great Lakes user login.

Please note that obtaining a user account requires human processing, so be sure to do this at least two business days before class begins.

SLURM ACCOUNT
We create a Slurm account for the workshop so you can run jobs on the cluster during the workshop and for one day after for those who would like additional practice. The workshop job account is quite limited and is intended only to run examples to help you cement the details of job submission and management. If you already have an existing Slurm account, you can use that, though if there are any issues with that account, we will ask you to use the workshop account.

DUO AUTHENTICATION
Duo two-factor authentication is required to log in to the cluster. When logging in, you will need to type your UMICH (AKA Level 1) password as well as authenticate through Duo in order to access Great Lakes.

If you need to enroll in Duo, follow the instructions at Enroll a Smartphone or Tablet in Duo (https://documentation.its.umich.edu/2fa/enroll-smartphone-or-tablet-duo).

Please enroll in Duo before you come to class.

LAPTOP PREPARATION
You will need VPN software to access the U-M network on which Great Lakes is located. If you do not have VPN software already installed, please download and install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN software following these instructions (https://its.umich.edu/enterprise/wifi-networks/vpn/getting-started). Please use the ‘Campus All traffic’ profile in the Cisco client.

You will need an ssh client to connect to the Great Lakes cluster. Mac OS X and Linux platforms have this built-in. Here are a couple of choices for Windows platforms:

Download and install U-M PuTTY/WinSCP from the Compute at the U website (https://its.umich.edu/computing/computers-software/compute). This includes both the PuTTY ssh client and terminal emulator and a graphical file transfer tool in one installer. This document describes how to download and use this software, except please note you will be connecting to greatlakes.arc-ts.umich.edu instead of the cited host (https://documentation.its.umich.edu/node/350). You must have administrative authority over your computer to install this software.

Download PuTTY directly from the developer (https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/latest.html). Download the putty.exe application listed under “Alternative binary files,”, then execute the application. You do not need administrative authority over your computer to use this software.

Our Great Lakes User Guide in Section 1.2 describes in more detail how to use PuTTY to connect to Great Lakes (https://arc-ts.umich.edu/greatlakes/user-guide/).

Please prepare and test your computer’s ability to make remote connections before class; we cannot stop to debug connection issues during the class.

A Zoom link will be provided to the participants the day before the class. Registration is required. Please note this session will be recorded.

Instructor will be available at the Zoom link, to be provided, from 12 -1 PM for computer setup assistance.

If you have questions about this workshop, please send an email to the instructors at hpc-course@umich.edu.

In this talk I will demonstrate the potential of the black hole mass gap to probe new physics. The mass gap, in which no black holes can be formed, is a standard prediction of stellar structure theory. I will show that new physics that couples to the Standard Model can act as an additional source of energy loss in the cores of population-III stars, dramatically altering their evolution, resulting in large shifts of the gap. The gravitational wave observations by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration will bring the edges of the black hole mass gap in sight in the coming years, making this a promising novel probe of new physics.

Title:
Knowing more than one can see: Investigating the apparent negligence of context for European Americans

Abstract:
The cumulative evidence in social psychology suggests that people engaged in Western cultures (Westerners) are typically negligent of contextual information while perceiving a focal object. However, the cognitive mechanism underlying this phenomenon has remained largely unexplored. In the present research, we proposed a directional activation hypothesis to suggest that, for Westerners, the activation of an object in cognition may be sufficient to activate the contextual inferences associated with the object. To test our hypothesis, we examined 24 European Americans within an EEG-based priming paradigm. In an object-prime condition, participants were first shown an object (e.g., an image of a crab), followed by a context that is either typical or atypical of the object (e.g., an image of a parking lot or ocean). In a context-prime condition, however, participants were first shown a context, followed by an object that is either typical or atypical of the context. We tested the event-related potential component of N400, which indexes the detection of violations of semantic expectations. In the context-prime condition, the typicality of the target objects showed no effect on the magnitude of N400, thus replicating prior evidence. However, in the object-prime condition, the N400 was significantly greater in magnitude when target contexts were atypical of the object primes than when they were typical of the latter. We concluded that the negligence of context, typically observed for Westerners, is partly because the object takes priority in perception to inform about relevant contexts. From their phenomenal point of view, they have inferred what the appropriate context is for a given object, even before seeing it.

Title:
Integrating Theory for Community Based Suicide Prevention

Abstract:
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Americans aged 10-34 and US suicide rates are increasing across almost every demographic. This is particularly apparent in American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities, where suicide rates are up to 20 times the national US average; some of the highest in the world. Despite increasing investments in suicide prevention via research and practice, the US suicide rate has increased 35% in the last 40 years. I assert that new approaches which foster the capacity of community support systems to address vulnerabilities of persons—ideally before they are suicidal—are desperately needed. I will share a brief background of US suicide trends and prevention approaches; a note on how Social Work Practice and Social Psychology theories may come together to inform new ways of thinking about community driven suicide prevention; and two studies from my work in the last year that demonstrate the promise of integrating theory across disciplines in the work with AIAN communities to promote mental wellness and prevent suicide.

Sheryl Oring returns to University of Michigan for virtual performances of “I Wish to Say” from September 29-November 1, 2020 as part of the university’s Democracy & Debate Theme Semester in collaboration with Stamps Gallery and Wayne State University.

In this project, Oring invites participants to dictate a message to the next president of the United States of America. Oring was last on the Ann Arbor campus in 2017 as part of the Stamps Gallery exhibition Vital Signs for a New America, curated by Srimoyee Mitra. For the 2020 iteration of the project, Oring collaborates with students at Wayne State University and the University of Michigan, who will meet with members of the general public via Zoom to take dictation of the public’s messages to the next president. Students will type these messages on mid-century manual typewriters on the Zoom call in a performative fashion. The typed postcards will be mailed directly to the White House on the participant’s behalf after the inauguration.

Voters Broadcast

Selected messages will be set in Voters’ Broadcast, a new musical work conceived and composed by Lisa Bielawa, which will bring together choirs from the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. The University Center for Language and Literacy is offering a workshop designed to help you reach personal communication goals. *Speaking American English: A workshop for English Language Learners* offers a supportive environment where you have the opportunity to practice the language skills that are important to you.

Our certified Speech-Language Pathologists use techniques to help non-native English speakers feel more confident in their communications – whether that’s giving a presentation, or taking notes in a class with a native speaker who speaks fast. The goal of the program is not to eliminate a client’s accent, but to build confidence in any communication or setting.

Participants set their own individual goals at the start of the workshop and will work to achieve those goals using a combination of small group activities and one-on-one interaction. The workshop typically runs for 10 weeks, but will depend on when it begins. If the group workshop does work with your schedule, please contact us; individual consultations are available.

What to Expect
* An initial meeting focusing on setting your personal goals and objectives
* Both group and individual activities
* Exercises for improving articulation, rate control, and projection
* Increased confidence in social and professional interactions
* Guidance from a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist

Abstract:
Ultra-high-energy-density (UHED) matter (>108 J cm-3, >109 bar) is encountered in the center of stars but is difficult to create in the lab. We show that irradiation of high aspect-ratio aligned nanowire arrays with ultra-high contrast Joule-level fs laser pulses provides nearly complete absorption and enhanced light penetration into near-solid density targets, and allows volumetric heating into the UHED regime. Using ALEPH (Advance Laser for Extreme Photonics), a PW laser at CSU, we demonstrate that fs laser pulses of relativistic intensity volumetrically heat near-solid density plasmas to multi-keV temperatures, with pressures surpassed in the lab only in the hotspot of fusion plasmas. The physics of relativistic laser pulse interactions with nanostructures and promising applications will be reviewed. Electron densities >100x that of the critical density are achieved. Extraordinarily high degrees of ionization (e.g., Au+72) occurs at solid densities using laser pulses of <10 J, producing return currents through the nanowires that create giga-Gauss magnetic fields. The large electron density and plasma volume produce 20% energy conversion into ps x-ray pulses. Acceleration of deuterons from nanowire arrays to multi-MeV resulted in quasi-monochromatic fusion neutron production 500x that of irradiating flat sold targets. 3-D PIC simulations of relativistic laser pulse interactions with nanostructures will be discussed.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Jorge Rocca is a University Distinguished Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics Departments at Colorado State University. His research interests are in the physics and development of compact X-ray lasers and their applications; the development of high power lasers, and the study of high power laser interactions with matter. His group is known for the development of the first bright table-top soft X-ray lasers, and their applications to nanotechnology and the diagnostics of dense plasmas. His group has developed a multi-Hz PW-class laser, and kW-level average power, high pulse energy picosecond solid state lasers. Prof. Rocca has 270 peer review journal papers. He received the Arthur L. Schawlow Prize in Laser Science from the APS, and the Willis E. Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics. He is Fellow of APS, OSA, and IEEE. He received an IEEE LEOS Distinguished Lecturer Award. Early in his career, he was a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator.

Over the last decade cybersecurity issues have risen in prominence in both the public and private spheres—there have been near daily reports regarding cyber operations launched by nation states, hacking groups and criminal organizations. Cybersecurity was a key issue in the 2016 Presidential election, and as we head toward the 2020 election during the upheaval of the coronavirus pandemic it remains at the forefront. In this conversation, Paul Abbate, Associate Deputy Director of the FBI, and Teresa Carlson, Vice President of Amazon Web Services Worldwide Public Sector, will discuss some of the challenges in addressing current cybersecurity threats, formulating policy, and calibrating responses. Javed Ali, Towsley Policymaker in Residence at the Ford School, will moderate the discussion.

Abstract: The human genome is organized into small compartments to allow for the proper gene expression regulation in the physiological process. With the advance of next-generation sequencing and imaging technologies, we can now investigate how the genome is folded into 3D space and how the 3D genomic organization regulates gene expression in development and disease. Currently, most of the studies are focusing on CTCF and cohesion complex which partner together to facilitate the formation of topological associated domains (TAD). The presenter will mainly discuss his recently published work on the DNA methylation -3D genomics cross-talk. Unpublished work on the 3D genomics in AML will be discussed as well.

Short bio: Xiaotian Zhang obtained his Ph.D. at Baylor College of Medicine with Dr. Margaret Goodell on the role of DNA methylation synergy in leukemia development. He was previously the Van Andel special postdoc fellow in Gerd Pfeifer lab working on the 3D genomics in normal hematopoietic stem cell and leukemia. He is now a Research track faculty (Research Investigator) in Pathology Department under Tomek Cierpicki working on the HOXA regulation in leukemia development. In 2015, Xiaoxing Xi was wrongfully arrested by the FBI in a case of alleged racial profiling. Since speaking out about his experience and the consequences for academic freedom, he was awarded the 2020 Andrei Sakharov Prize from the American Physical Society, which is awarded biannually to human rights advocates in the physics community.

Presentation abstract:
Amid rapidly escalating tension between the United States and China, professors, scientists, and students of Chinese ethnic origin as well as those engaging in academic collaborations with China are under heightened scrutiny by the federal government. Law enforcement officials consider collaborating with Chinese colleagues “by definition conveying sensitive information to the Chinese.” In 2015, I became a casualty of this campaign despite being innocent. This experience gave me insights into the challenges Chinese scientists face and the immediate threat to the open environment in fundamental research on university campuses.

In this talk, I will highlight the JASON Report on Fundamental Research Security, commissioned and endorsed by the National Science Foundation. It opposes profiling Chinese scholars based on the actions of the Chinese government and Chinese Communist Party, supports reaffirmation of NSDD-189, which made unrestricted fundamental research a federal policy and proposes addressing foreign influence on US research within the framework of research integrity. I urge the audience to rally around the JASON Report and speak up to defend liberty and safeguard America's research enterprise.

Co-sponsored by Indigo: The LSA Asian and Asian-American Faculty Alliance and the U-M Association of Chinese Professors.

Singer-songwriter David Berkeley has been compared to both Cat and Sufjian Stevens as well as a host of other literate songwriters and he comes to the Ark Family Room with his most intimate and poignant release yet, Oh Quiet World, written during the lockdown after his family escaped Spain due to Corona. “I wrote a song a day that first week back,” Berkeley explains. “Songwriting gave me a way to process my fears and frustrations. It gave me a purpose, something small I could contribute.” David Berkeley’s gift as a songwriter and storyteller is that he sees both the tragedy and comedy in life, managing to both reveal the sorrow and the blazing beauty at the heart of the human condition. It’s a duality that audiences experience at all of Berkeley’s shows as well, as he tells uproarious stories between cathartic songs.
