SUMMARY:Exhibition:In-Between the World and Dreams
DESCRIPTION:In this 3-part installation\, Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama explores global exchange\, commerce and the troubling histories of colonialism and slavery in the Western world. \n\nAt the U-M Museum of Art\, massive\, quilt-like panels cover 4\,452 square feet of the exterior of the building\, creating one of the spectacular architectural interventions Mahama is known for. A related installation at the U-M Institute for the Humanities Gallery can be viewed (and heard) from a sidewalk window. There will also be an installation inside the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. \n\nMahama's artistic practice illustrates\, as he explains\, how art education\, art and cultural opportunities \"allow for people to find new ways to acquire knowledge\, not only of themselves\, but their histories and the places and spaces in which they find themselves.\"\n\nEnveloping the contours of a museum building or wall\, the blankets of jute fibers are meant to contrast with the monumentality of the institutional buildings and spaces they cover\, becoming remnants and traces that reference the hands of laborers\, the imprints of colonialism and the interference of Britain and the U.S. in Ghanaian history.\n\nThe project marks the first outdoor exhibition of Mahama's work in the United States. It is responsive to the present moment\, offering students and the broader community the opportunity to engage with the arts in a public space at a time when gatherings inside buildings and museums are limited.\n\nOct. 1-23: Large-Scale Public Art Installation\, U-M Museum of Art\, 525 S. State St.\, Ann Arbor\nOct. 1-23: Sidewalk Gallery\, Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, 202 S. Thayer St.\, Ann Arbor (viewing from the gallery window only) \nOct. 12-Dec. 5: Community Gallery Installation\, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History\, 315 E. Warren Ave.\, Detroit

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSEAS Virtual Viewing. *A Thousand Cuts*
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time\, we are sponsoring free access to this film's virtual viewing. For instructions\, please email cseas@umich.edu with the subject “Request to watch ‘A Thousand Cuts’”\n\nAbout the movie:\nOn June 15\, 2020\, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel\, setting a ticking clock on the limited time she has to get her story out to the world and keep the fight for democracy alive in this all too familiar tale of an autocratic leader drowning out “fake news.” Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy\, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns\, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa places the tools of the free press—and her freedom—on the line in defense of truth and democracy. Ramona S. Diaz’s thrilling film follows key players from two sides of an increasingly dangerous war between press and government. As each side digs in\, we become witness to an epic and ongoing fight for the integrity of human life and truth itself—a conflict that extends beyond the Philippines into our own divisive backyard. A Film by Ramona S. Diaz (IMELDA\, MOTHERLAND).\n\nCosponsored by the Michigan Theater.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope\, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series\, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists\, women artists\, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.\n\nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund\, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! This is a free event\, and all are welcome.\n\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Complex Systems Seminar | A Simple Model for a Complex System: Legged Locomotion as an Oscillator
DESCRIPTION:VIRTUAL SEMINAR LINK: myumi.ch/v2ZYv\n\nThe neuromechanical control and dynamics of legged locomotion are of great interest for biomedical and robotics applications\, as well as being an aspect of functional morphology with large ecological implications. Most biomechanists take a \"reductionist\" approach that attempts to model animal motion by modeling the parts of the organism and their interconnections\, thereby combining them into what are sometimes staggeringly complex models. We will discuss a complementary \"essentialist\" approach\, where multi-legged locomotion is viewed as a limit cycle oscillation comprising the body\, nervous system\, and environment. Through a combination of theoretical mathematical advances\, new numerical algorithms\, and experimental work on both animals and robots\, this approach has revealed new ways to non-invasively inspect neuromechanical feedback pathways\, control and coordinate legs\, and model complex multi-contact collisions. Talk will be non-technical and suitable for a broad sciences audience.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Zoom Webinar: The Great Separation: \"How the Cultural Revolution Has Shaped Contemporary China and Its Relationship to Global Capitalism\"
DESCRIPTION:The Cultural Revolution is the dividing line in modern Chinese history and separates its century of revolutions\, when China was known for mass mobilization to generate social change\, and the Reform Era\, which is deeply depoliticized and economically driven. This talk delves into the interplay of socialist politics and socialist economy in the heydays of the Cultural Revolution to offer a new interpretation of the political origins of contemporary China and its paradoxical role in global capitalism.\n \n Xiaohong Xu is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at U-M and a faculty associate of LRCCS and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracy. He received his PhD from Yale and has taught in Singapore and Hong Kong before joining U-M. He is currently writing a book to unpack the Cultural Revolution both as a paradigmatic case of modern Jacobin politics and as a pivotal event that has shaped China today and its position in global capitalism. He has researched and published on patterns of contention in revolutionary China as well as state formation in early modern Europe. He is also beginning a new project on tech innovation and class formation in contemporary China.\n\nRegistration required. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Political Economy Workshop (PEW)
DESCRIPTION:Tom O'Mealia studies the relationship between violence\, security provision\, and the evolution of the post-colonial state. In particular\, He asks why civilians in contexts of acute insecurity choose to invest their trust in some security providers and not others\, and how those decisions impact state building and political development. His research also explains how and why political elites use the state security apparatus to consolidate control at the local level.\n\nO'Mealia answers these questions using field work and by analyzing original data collected in the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Kenya\, and South Africa.\n\nEmail political-economy-workshop@umich.edu for the meeting link.\n\nPEW provides a unique forum for doctoral students and faculty members to share and develop interdisciplinary research in political economy. Political science and economics are intimately linked in both substance and methodology\, and the field of political economy is among the most fertile and enduring areas for cross-disciplinary research in the social sciences. Currently\, PEW is the sole interdisciplinary workshop at the University of Michigan wholly dedicated to the exploration of current research in political economy\, and thus plays a valuable role in fostering connections among the university’s various departments and schools.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women's Vote
DESCRIPTION:Organized by AIGA in partnership with League of Women Voters\n\n2020 marks the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, granting women the right to vote in 1920. It was the first legislation for women’s voting rights. Not until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 were voting rights of ALL women protected and enforced\, and intimidation tactics progressively eliminated.  The Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote poster campaign\, organized by AIGA in partnership with the League of Women Voters\, commemorates this milestone. A core group of invited women of design submitted the first 65 non-partisan posters\, to launch the initiative with their vision and voices. Through the posters\, these women joined forces to collectively contribute to dialogue in design and society. This moment in history is an incredible opportunity to catalyze women in design\, voting rights\, citizenship\, community\, and diversity. The collection aspires to not only support present day voter participation\, but to also serve as a backdrop for discourse and examination of the history of voting rights and women’s fight for equality.  The poster initiative continues at aiga.org/vote\, where AIGA members can contribute posters to motivate the American public to register and turn out to vote in the 2020 general election\, as well as local elections to come. Posters are available for free download online.\n\nThe Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote exhibition at Stamps Gallery includes a selection of the 65 posters chosen by a committee of Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Nicholas Dowgwillo\, Eloise Janssen\, Keesa V. Johnson\, Francis Nunoo-Quarcoo\, Endi Poskovic\, Destini Riley\, and Stamps Gallery. The exhibition includes posters by Audrey Bennett\, Johanna Björk\, Karen Cheng\, Emily Comfort\, Jenny El-Shamy\, Dinah Fried\, Karin Fong\, Anne M. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations by Heidi Kumao
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is pleased to present Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations\, a solo exhibition of narrative fabric works and experimental animations by Stamps Professor Heidi Kumao.\n\nUsing fabric cutouts and machine and hand stitching on industrial felt\, Kumao gives physical form to the intangible dynamics underlying ordinary conversations and relationships from a feminist perspective. Intentionally minimal\, each image distills an interaction\, traumatic incident\, or power imbalance into an accessible visual narrative. Recognizable objects such as chairs\, roots\, ladders\, or spotlights set the stage for the story to unfold. Events are captured midstream\, suspended in time like a felt film still.\n\nThe exhibition is inspired\, in part\, by the courage\, testimony\, and experiences of women (like Christine Blasey Ford) who publicly report assault\, harassment\, or misconduct. The #MeToo movement gave voice to thousands of women to tell their personal stories\, but also exposed a hostile backlash meant to silence them. The title\, “Real and Imagined\,” is a deliberate contradiction\; if one is true\, the other must not be. In practice\, however\, both terms are used to reference a woman’s testimony and determine how it is publicly interpreted. Her account is accepted as truthful by many and simultaneously dismissed as imaginary by the court of public opinion: “her memory is wrong\,” “she imagined it.”\n\nThe works in “Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations” make difficult conversations and relationships tangible by stripping them down to their essentials.\n\nWordless physical gestures highlight the psychological and emotional forces at play behind even the smallest of interactions.\n\nBiography\nHeidi Kumao has created award-winning experimental films\, video installations\, cinema machines\, electronic clothing\, and kinetic sculptures. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including shows at Art Science Museum Singapore\, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona\, Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona)\, and Museu da Imagem e do Som (São Paulo). She has received fellowships from the Creative Capital Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a professor at the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nFall 2020 Hours and Policies\nBeginning September 15\, 2020\, Stamps Gallery will be open to University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 pm.\nAll visitors must have a valid M-Card to enter Stamps Gallery. SUMMARY:Auditions:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition\n\nStamps Gallery is proud to kick-off the fall semester with Respond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Student Poster & Video Exhibition\, which brings together powerful posters and playful videos made by the students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.\n\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the stakeholders in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We found inspiration in the thoughtful words of renowned civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis (1940-2020) who wrote\, “My fellow Americans\, this is a special moment in our history. Just as people of all faiths and no faiths\, and all backgrounds\, creeds\, and colors banded together decades ago to fight for equality and justice in a peaceful\, orderly\, non-violent fashion\, we must do so again.” His powerful words are a reminder for all of us - present and future generations to stay hopeful\, proactive\, and resilient in our collective efforts to end racial discrimination and foster a true democracy. \n\nIn this spirit\, Stamps Gallery invited the undergraduate and graduate students at Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, to design posters and make videos to respond and contemplate what each of us can do to build a stronger community\, one that is based on the values of racial equality\, justice and belonging. How can we acknowledge our own biases\, learn from each other\, and listen to the voices of those that have been silenced? We are at a pivotal moment in our history as the pandemic radically transforms everyday life. Through this exhibition Stamps Gallery asks the UM community to come together as artists and audiences and envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging and empathy.\n\nRespond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition includes work by Emily Albright\, Adriana Alcala\, Nathan Byrne\, David Forsee\, Eloise Jansenn\, Rey Jeong\, Sohyun Lim\, Anika Love\, Maggie McConnell\, Willian Minzer\, Judah Premble\, Casey Rheault\, Natalia Rocafuerte\, Jenna Scheen\, Ellie Schmidt\, Abigail Seguin\, LaKyla Thomas\, Elijah Thompson\, Benjamin Winans\, and Molly Wu.\n\nArtwork was selected through an open call by a committee of Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Nicholas Dowgwillo\, Eloise Janssen\, Keesa V. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PHD SEMINAR: \"Toward Mutual Understanding and Adaptation for Human-Robot Interactions\" — Ruikun Luo
DESCRIPTION:This event is designed for U-M IOE PhD students and faculty and is also open to all U-M students\, faculty and staff.\n\nTitle:\nToward Mutual Understanding and Adaptation for Human-Robot Interactions\n\nAbstract:\nArtificial Intelligence (AI) agents are coming to humans' daily lives and will interact with humans in various domains\, such as transportations\, manufacturing\, health care\, and the service industry. These AI agents require contributions from not only AI researchers\, domain experts\, but also human factors researchers as understanding human is essential to design AI systems that interact with humans. To achieve optimal task performance and keep human well-being\, AI systems should consider the mechanism that humans interact with autonomous systems and adapt to the essential human factors while keeping human informed. My research focuses on 1) developing new algorithms for human-robot interaction (HRI) that consider useful human factors\, and 2) studying the mechanism of HRI using true autonomous robots in real-time.\n\nIn this seminar\, I will present my research on semi-autonomous vehicles where the human and autonomy share the control of the vehicle. Properly allocating the control authority between the human and the autonomy is essential in this setting. However\, workload as a critical human factor has not been considered in the shared control schemes. During the seminar\, I will introduce my research on real-time human workload estimation using non-intrusive physiological measurements and discuss the design of adaptive behaviors.\n\nBio:\nRuikun Luo is a PhD Candidate at the Robotics Institute\, University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. His dissertation research is supervised by Prof. Xi Jessie Yang. His research interest is human-robot interaction by leveraging robotics\, Artificial Intelligence\, and human factors. Prior to joining the University of Michigan\, he obtained an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Carnegie Mellon University in 2014 and a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering and Automation from the Tsinghua University\, China in 2012.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Undermining Racial Justice: How One University Embraced Inclusion and Inequality
DESCRIPTION:In Undermining Racial Justice\, Matthew Johnson (Texas Tech University) contends that over the last sixty years\, administrators on college campuses nationwide have responded to black campus activists by making racial inclusion and inequality compatible.\n\nFocusing on the University of Michigan\, Johnson argues that U-M leaders incorporated black student dissent selectively into the institution's policies\, practices\, and values. This strategy was used to prevent activism from disrupting the institutional priorities that campus leaders deemed more important than racial justice. As Johnson illustrates\, inclusion has always been a secondary priority\, and\, as a result\, the policies of the late 1970s and 1980s ushered in a new and enduring era of racial retrenchment on campuses nationwide.\n\nJoin the author for a discussion of Undermining Racial Justice: How One University Embraced Inclusion and Inequality. Angela Dillard (University of Michigan) will serve as interlocutor.\n\nMatthew Johnson is associate professor of history at Texas Tech University. He is currently an American Council of Learned Societies Fellow working on a book about the impact of urban campus police forces on Black communities and students. \n\nAngela Dillard is the Richard A. Meisler Collegiate Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies\, History\, and in the Residential College. She specializes in American and African American intellectual history\, particularly around issues of race\, religion\, and politics—on both the Left and the Right sides of the political spectrum—and maintains an active interest in urban studies.\n\nFree and open to the public. This is a remote event and will take place online via Zoom. Please register in advance here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_a90DMOeVRZy18VWjsPyc_A\n\nThis event is presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.
