Notably, the incidents which led to the fiercest backlash were instances of blackface. Indeed, from 2014 to 2019, 104,097 news article titles included the term \u201cblackface\u201d, while only 614 news article titles include the term \u201credface\u201d. This is especially concerning given the voracity at which Native people protest the continued use of redface every sport season. The current research explores how the lack of understanding of the lived experiences of Native people (i.e., viewing Natives as frozen in the past, denying Natives experiences with discrimination and racism) helps explain why blackface is understood as unacceptable, while redface is given far less attention and incur less social disapproval. \r\n\r\nAmelie Rossmaier\r\n\r\nTitle\r\nDo people conform more with the group during the COVID-19 pandemic?\r\n\r\nAbstract\r\nThe current pandemic poses a threat to virtually everyone while producing enormous uncertainty in life. According to classic theories of social influence, the combination of an external threat and uncertainty should foster conformity to majority views. Here, we tested this possibility by taking advantage of a study on conformity of attitudes conducted in the fall of 2019 on a group of American undergraduates. We repeated this study in April 2020 during the pandemic. As predicted, we observed a significant increase of attitude shifts toward the national means during the pandemic, compared to the pre-pandemic period. We will discuss reasons for and possible implications of this effect and look at other factors that might make us conform more or less.\r\n\r\nImani Burris\r\n\r\nTitle\r\nChallenge Mindset: Leveraging Adversity as a Source of Strength\r\n\r\nAbstract\r\nAlthough adversity often undermines long-term wellbeing, successfully making meaning of adversity (i.e., understanding why adversity occurs) mitigates these negative effects. In the current work, I propose challenge mindset (i.e., the belief that adversity creates opportunities for personal growth and functions as a source of strength to confront future challenges) as a form of successful meaning-making. In particular, I theorize that endorsing a challenge mindset helps people cope with and, when possible, overcome adverse experiences. In this talk, I present two correlational studies (N = 522), which provide empirical evidence that challenge mindset is a reliable and valid construct. Further, I show that challenge mindset endorsements are meaningfully related to past and ongoing adverse experiences, as well as the use of adaptive coping strategies. A fellow of the American Academy in Berlin and the NEA, he is an associate professor of English at UM.\r\n\r\nSilvia Lindtner (she\/her) is Associate Professor at the University of Michigan in the School of Information and Associate Director of the Center for Ethics, Society, and Computing (ESC). Lindtner's research interests include cultures and politics of tech production, labor, industry, and governance. Lindtner draws from more than ten years of multi-sited ethnographic research, with a particular focus on China's shifting place in the political economy of tech innovation. Yet practices of active aging resonate with older forms of activity in late life in ways that exceed these narratives of progress. Moreover, some older Poles come to live valued, meaningful lives in old age despite threats to respect and dignity posed by illness and debility. Drawing on almost two years of ethnographic research with older Poles in a range of contexts, this talk shows that everyday practices of remembering and relatedness shape how older Poles come to be seen by themselves and by others as living worthy, valued lives. This talk shows how memories and understandings of the Polish nation intersect with ideals and experiences of late life to produce forms of life that are not reducible to binary categories of health or illness, independence or dependence, or socialism or capitalism.\r\n \r\nJessica Robbins is an assistant professor at the Institute of Gerontology and Department of Anthropology at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She received her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Michigan, and her B.A. in anthropology and music from Williams College. Her research explores aging, memory, kinship, and personhood in historical political-economic perspective, in both Poland and Michigan. Her research has been published in journals such as *Medical Anthropology Quarterly, Ageing & Society, Journal of Aging Studies,* and *East European Politics, Societies & Cultures*. Her first book, *Aging Nationally in Contemporary Poland: Memory, Kinship, and Personhood*, is forthcoming later this year with Rutgers University Press. Single-cell omics measurements are destructive and one cannot follow the high-dimensional dynamics of genes across time in one cell. Computational methods are widely used to infer pseudo-temporal orderings of cells or to infer spatial locations. We show how Gaussian processes (GPs) can be used to model temporal and spatial relationships between genes and cells in these datasets. Motivated by these facts, we provide a model connecting international financial integration and global productivity growth. The key feature is that the tradable sector is the engine of growth of the economy. Capital flows from developing countries to the United States boost demand for U.S. non-tradable goods, inducing a reallocation of U.S. economic activity from the tradable sector to the non-tradable one. In turn, lower profits in the tradable sector lead firms to cut back investment in innovation. Since innovation in the United States determines the evolution of the world technological frontier, the result is a drop in global productivity growth.
