A related installation at the U-M Institute for the Humanities Gallery can be viewed (and heard) from a sidewalk window. There will also be an installation inside the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. \r\n\r\nMahama's artistic practice illustrates, as he explains, how art education, art and cultural opportunities \"allow for people to find new ways to acquire knowledge, not only of themselves, but their histories and the places and spaces in which they find themselves.\"\r\n\r\nEnveloping the contours of a museum building or wall, the blankets of jute fibers are meant to contrast with the monumentality of the institutional buildings and spaces they cover, becoming remnants and traces that reference the hands of laborers, the imprints of colonialism and the interference of Britain and the U.S. in Ghanaian history.\r\n\r\nThe project marks the first outdoor exhibition of Mahama's work in the United States. Non-cisgender identity has been historically equated with BPD diagnosis, the improper diagnosis of which imposes potential barriers to accessing appropriate gender affirming care. In addition, sexual and gender minority populations contend with greater psychosocial stress and exhibit higher rates of common forms of psychopathology than their heterosexual cisgender peers. Using 1900-1930 decennial census data, we document literacy for the 1900 through 1930 period and for birth cohorts from 1830 through 1920. We thus provide for American Indians a large-scale picture of the history of literacy. We document the pace and extent of Indian literacy from very low for the birth cohorts of the early 1800s to fairly universal for the cohorts of the early 1900s. We also demonstrate that the increases in Indian literacy were closely related to birth cohort, with successive new birth cohorts having higher levels of literacy. We found little evidence that increases in literacy from 1900 to 1930 happened because adults increased their literacy after the school years and as they matured across the adult life course. We also document important gender differences in Native American literacy, with the proportion literate being lower for women than for men, but with the gender gap decreasing in later birth cohorts. There were also substantial literacy inequalities across geographical regions of the country-ranging from 19 to 74 percent literate across regions in 1900. The trajectories of literacy attainment also varied across regions in interesting ways. He is a social demographer who has served as president of the Population Association of America and previously held a MERIT award from the National Institutes of Health. He has received four awards for his books as well as distinguished career awards from the American Sociological Association and the Population Association of America. Thornton has focused much of his career on the study of family and demographic issues, with emphasis on marriage, cohabitation, childbearing, gender roles, education, and migration. Thornton has also pioneered the study of developmental idealism, including its conceptualization, measurement, and influence in many places. He has collaborated in the collection and analysis of data from Albania, Argentina, Bulgaria, China, Egypt, Hungary, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Malawi, Nepal, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Turkey, the U.S., and Vietnam. Through our studies on RNA processing, we have introduced therapeutic strategies to treat neurodegenerative and muscular diseases, built cellular models of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases and developed experimental and computational tools that enable the community to probe RNA binding protein-RNA interactions at scale. The business environment was not spared in this disruption, as customers, the workforce, workplace environments and supply chains were each turned upside-down, almost overnight. Operating practices needed to be challenged, re-engineered and re-adopted \u2013 at the speed of business. That is akin to replacing the aircraft engine while the plane is mid-flight.\r\n\r\nThe challenge faced by business leaders from the outset of the pandemic, and remains true today, is that objective, analytical information on the state of the virus was and remains woefully inadequate. Further, every organization operating in multiple geographical and political jurisdictions has to navigate different and every-changing rules governing the ability to conduct operations.\r\n\r\nIn mid-March, I launched an effort to build a repository of critical virus-related information (tests, positives, infections, recoveries, fatalities) at various levels of granularity \u2013 world, country, state or province, and metropolitan area. From this, I established a daily reporting mechanism and underlying analyses, designed to equip business leaders, economic and investment advisors and clinicians with insight about the state of the virus spread and underlying trends. My intent was to inform these leaders with actionable intelligence, free of both the fearmongering and denial perspectives that were dominating the general and social media.\r\n\r\nThese efforts have resulted in my direct engagement with four organizations\u2019 operational planning efforts around the pandemic: two for-profit organizations involved in the manufacture and distribution of critical medical\/life sciences products to consumers around the globe, a not-for-profit agency supporting families of critically-ill children and a governmental agency charged with administering a state-wide pandemic response effort. Additionally, I provide daily reports on the state of the virus to an estimated 2,000 clinicians, health organization managers, economists and investment managers.\r\n\r\nThese lessons provide strong insight for the analytical practitioner. Through this effort, I have discovered the challenges of making actionable sense of data from a novel virus . . . in real-time. Data sources and definitions are in constant flux, external reporting lacks analytical rigor, and, new knowledge frequently trumps previously held scientific beliefs. More profoundly, models reported on and used extensively by government officials are often accepted as dogma but, may be nothing more than assumptions built upon several more layers of assumptions.\r\n\r\nMark currently serves as the Board Chair of Crown Healthcare Laundry Inc., a Quilvest Private Equity-portfolio company and as Strategic Advisor to Terso Solutions Inc., a subsidiary of Promega that provides Real Time Location Services (RTLS) for field-based inventory of leading medical implant and biotech companies. \r\n\r\nHe previously served as chief strategist and business intelligence officer for Owens & Minor, Inc.; as a Partner in the healthcare consulting practice at Ernst & Young, where he launched the firm\u2019s health care supply chain practice; and as a Management Engineer at the Detroit Medical Center. \r\n\r\nMark also serves on the National Advisory Board of the Congenital Heart Center at C.S. Mott Children\u2019s Hospital at the University of Michigan, and on the Advisory Board of the Medical Device Supply Chain Council. He recently completed two terms on the Board of the Bellwether League Inc. \r\n\r\nIn the midst of the COVID-19 situation, Mark is producing an objective and analytical daily report on the virus progression in the US and worldwide.
