Mitochondria are composed of proteins encoded by both the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes and the coordinated expression of both genomes is essential for energy production. Impaired energy production leads to mitochondrial dysfunction that causes or contributes significantly to a variety of diseases including metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases. Mitochondrial dysfunction is caused by mutations in nuclear or mitochondrial genes that encode proteins or regulatory RNAs essential for mitochondrial biogenesis. How uncoordinated gene expression causes mitochondrial dysfunction and compromised energy production in heart and metabolic diseases is poorly understood, making it difficult to develop effective treatments. To unravel how mitochondrial function fails and to identify therapeutic targets it is necessary (i) to understand how gene expression is regulated between mitochondria and the nucleus and (ii) how this regulation is disrupted in disease. We have created new and unique models of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases caused by mutations or loss of nuclear encoded RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) that regulate mitochondrial RNA metabolism and protein synthesis. These new models have identified that energy dysfunction can differentially affect specific organs such as the heart or liver, or multiple organs leading to heart failure or metabolic diseases that can be devastating, such as mitochondrial diseases, or may be as common as insulin resistance and obesity. In simple trades, one item is often exchanged for another; but in more complex trades, agents can trade different numbers of items, reflecting the differing value of the items being traded. Though young children regularly engage in simple trades, we examine whether they understand a key element involved in more complex trades\u2014the idea that people may subjectively value the same item differently and accept trades that numerically disadvantage themselves in the service of acquiring more of a preferred item. To do so, we ran three studies with 5- to 10-year-old children (N = 314) in which they were asked to predict whether a third party would accept or reject different types of trades. Results revealed that children across this age range predict that a third party will accept a numerically disadvantageous trade when they prefer one resource over another, but not when they have an equal preference for both resources. Importantly, their predictions were not merely a reflection of what they thought was fair, but rather what was in the best interest of the third party\u2014they thought a third party would be more likely to accept an \u201cunfair\u201d trade that benefitted himself rather than someone else. Nativists fail to recognize global connections and how immigrants struggle to make both host and original countries better places. This talk highlights how both national and transnational processes are connected and how these processes shape immigrants\u2019 and trans-local actors\u2019 fight for and debates over equal citizenship rights, inclusion, and belonging. However, in this talk I will show that astrophysical observations are also a promising path towards detecting the axion and related axion-like-particles, which arise in some String Theory compactifications. systems, particularly around the allocation of fixed resources and physical space, is treated as fixed or static. As such policies regarding (i) the flow of patients, (ii) allocation of exam rooms, or (iii) the assignment of medical assistants to physicians are set at the beginning of the day, week or month, and remain unchanged across that duration. While the static nature of these schemes are meant to support stability and reduced complexity in the operations, this fixed mindset can hinder the ability to drive quality improvement. This presentation will review applications of simulation modeling in support of assessing the value that can be obtained from integrating flexibility into operational policies. We will review dynamic room allocation policies and staffing policies as applied to a crowded cardiovascular clinic. Additionally, we will explore similar concepts in multiple orthopedic clinics. Finally, we will present how these concepts can be similarly examined with a continuous-time Markov model.\r\n\r\nJackie Griffin is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at Northeastern University. Her research focuses on applications of Operations Research, Optimization, and Simulation methodologies in designing, managing and operating resilient healthcare delivery systems, ranging from outpatient clinics to regional emergency response networks to global pharmaceutical supply chains. Currently she leads a National Science Foundation funded project focused on tackling the ongoing challenge of drug shortages in the United States through the analysis of analytical models of pharmaceutical supply chains. Additionally, she has partnered with many prominent healthcare organizations to examine new strategies for improving the design and operation of health care systems while accounting for the need to balance multiple system objectives in ensuring delivery of high quality health care services. Her recent collaborations include organizations such as Massachusetts General Hospital, Tufts Medical Center, Boston Children\u2019s Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital, and the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science. Other past collaborators include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Children\u2019s Healthcare of Atlanta, DeKalb Medical Women\u2019s Center, Emory University Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital, and World Vision International. She received her PhD from the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology.
