Mellon Foundation, we supported Sharp's work on Results and Roses during the summer of 2020, but due to COVID-19 were forced to postpone the pop-up exhibition also scheduled for summer 2020. This fall we installed Results and Roses as a pop-up exhibition in the Osterman Common Room. Due to building security, it's not open to the general public, but we are thrilled to present the work online as a virtual exhibition. \r\n\r\nAbout the Artist\r\nSarah Rose Sharp is a Detroit-based writer, activist, photographer, and multimedia artist. She writes about art and culture for Art in America, Hyperallergic, Flash Art, Sculpture Magazine, ArtSlant, and others. Sarah was named a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow for Art Criticism and is a 2018 recipient of the Rabkin Foundation Prize. She is a guest lecturer at several universities in Southeast Michigan and served as a mentor in the NYFA Immigrant Artist Mentorship Program in 2018. Sarah has served as guest curator and juror for institutions including Penn State University (State College, PA), Scarab Club (Detroit, MI), The Terhune Gallery (Toledo, OH), and The Ann Arbor Art Center (Ann Arbor, MI). Sarah has shown her own work in New York, Seattle, Columbus & Toledo, OH, Covington, KY, and Detroit\u2014including at the Detroit Institute of Arts\u2014with solo shows at Simone De Sousa Gallery and Public Pool. Although several studies have examined whether familismo protects youth from one type of stressor at a time (e.g. community violence exposure, discrimination, substance abuse), few scholars have compared the differential effects of both general and cultural stressors on Latinx youth\u2019s psychological functioning (Ay\u00f3n et al., 2010; Stein et al., 2012). This study examined the potentially protective effects of familismo among Latinx adolescents facing a myriad of stressors, both cultural and general. Survey data for this study were drawn from a sample of 224 low-income, Latinx 9th graders (age M = 14.5) attending 3 high schools in the Northeastern United States. When both cultural and general stressors were accounted for, greater material need was associated with increased depressive symptoms and a less positive future orientation. Moreover, familismo endorsement protected adolescents from depressive symptoms linked to material hardship. Results suggest that cultural stressors may be less distressing to Latinx adolescents than more general stressors, like financial hardship, and familismo is an important cultural value that may help Latinx adolescents navigate various types of stressors. \r\n\r\nYeonjee Bae:\r\n\r\nTitle:\r\nDo firstborn children\u2019s responses to mothers interacting with a baby doll predict jealousy of a newborn sibling?\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nThe birth of an infant sibling is a normative life experience for many young children. Parents are particularly interested in how their firstborn children will react to the birth of the infant sibling, yet few resources exist to assist parents in managing their children\u2019s jealousy across the transition to siblinghood. The current study used an infant doll simulator as a social rival during a mother-child-doll laboratory task to elicit children\u2019s jealousy reactions which were then used to predict children\u2019s jealousy of their 1-month-old newborn sibling. Thirty pregnant mothers and their firstborn children participated in a short-term longitudinal study using the infant doll simulator in the lab before the birth (Time 1) and home observations of mother-child-baby 1 month after the birth (Time 2). Not until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 were voting rights of ALL women protected and enforced, and intimidation tactics progressively eliminated.\u00a0 The Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women\u2019s Vote poster campaign, organized by AIGA in partnership with the League of Women Voters, commemorates this milestone. A core group of invited women of design submitted the first 65 non-partisan posters, to launch the initiative with their vision and voices. Through the posters, these women joined forces to collectively contribute to dialogue in design and society. This moment in history is an incredible opportunity to catalyze women in design, voting rights, citizenship, community, and diversity. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social, political, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races, genders, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality, structural racism, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the stakeholders in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality, belonging, respect? We found inspiration in the thoughtful words of renowned civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis (1940-2020) who wrote, \u201cMy fellow Americans, this is a special moment in our history. Just as people of all faiths and no faiths, and all backgrounds, creeds, and colors banded together decades ago to fight for equality and justice in a peaceful, orderly, non-violent fashion, we must do so again.\u201d His powerful words are a reminder for all of us - present and future generations to stay hopeful, proactive, and resilient in our collective efforts to end racial discrimination and foster a true democracy. \r\n\r\nIn this spirit, Stamps Gallery invited the undergraduate and graduate students at Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, to design posters and make videos to respond and contemplate what each of us can do to build a stronger community, one that is based on the values of racial equality, justice and belonging. How can we acknowledge our own biases, learn from each other, and listen to the voices of those that have been silenced? We are at a pivotal moment in our history as the pandemic radically transforms everyday life. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social, political, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races, genders, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality, structural racism, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the stakeholders in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality, belonging, respect? We found inspiration in the thoughtful words of renowned civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis (1940-2020) who wrote, \u201cMy fellow Americans, this is a special moment in our history. Just as people of all faiths and no faiths, and all backgrounds, creeds, and colors banded together decades ago to fight for equality and justice in a peaceful, orderly, non-violent fashion, we must do so again.\u201d His powerful words are a reminder for all of us - present and future generations to stay hopeful, proactive, and resilient in our collective efforts to end racial discrimination and foster a true democracy. \r\n\r\nIn this spirit, Stamps Gallery invited the undergraduate and graduate students at Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, to design posters and make videos to respond and contemplate what each of us can do to build a stronger community, one that is based on the values of racial equality, justice and belonging. How can we acknowledge our own biases, learn from each other, and listen to the voices of those that have been silenced? We are at a pivotal moment in our history as the pandemic radically transforms everyday life. Our goal was to design and validate two new, freely available 75-occasion measures of gendered cognition \u2013 three-dimensional mental rotations and delayed paired verbal recall. We accomplished this by conducting a 75-day study with 121 participants who completed the novel cognitive measures every evening. Focusing on an age- and language-matched sample of 27 men and 27 women, results suggested that the novel measures are valid, and that they show parallel forms reliability across 75 days and the expected gender differences each day. Moreover, significant intra-individual variation was observed in cognition across the 75 days, indicating that gendered cognition fluctuates daily (in men and women).
