SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self\"
DESCRIPTION:In *Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self*\, Detroit artist Sydney G. James brings to the forefront and celebrates the work of Black women. The USPS worker\, the artist\, the event-planning Zoom mom—the paintings in this exhibition reposition the narrative of black women’s visibility and value. Each portrait honors the individual and collective contributions and labors of Black women\, persistent through the pandemics\, through police violence\, and whether seen or unseen.\n\nWith the Gallery closed to the public due to COVID\, *Watch Me Work* will be completely visible from the street. Artwork will be hung in the Washington and Thayer-street first floor windows of the Institute for the Humanities\, with two additional pieces visible through the gallery window on Thayer in a public celebration of these meaningful human relationships and connections.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Results or Roses: New and Assorted Works
DESCRIPTION:View the online gallery at https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/humanitiesgalleries/sarah-rose-sharp/\n\nResults or Roses: New and Assorted Works is a virtual exhibition by artist and writer Sarah Rose Sharp and part of the Institute for the Humanities' Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded \"High Stakes Art\" initiative. The exhibition of new and collected fiber-based art incorporates salvaged and found bits of cultural and fiber art that\, as she explains\, \"forms a discourse that is physical rather than textual.\"\n\nThanks to the grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\, we supported Sharp's work on Results and Roses during the summer of 2020\, but due to COVID-19 were forced to postpone the pop-up exhibition also scheduled for summer 2020. This fall we installed Results and Roses as a pop-up exhibition in the Osterman Common Room. Due to building security\, it's not open to the general public\, but we are thrilled to present the work online as a virtual exhibition. \n\nAbout the Artist\nSarah Rose Sharp is a Detroit-based writer\, activist\, photographer\, and multimedia artist. She writes about art and culture for Art in America\, Hyperallergic\, Flash Art\, Sculpture Magazine\, ArtSlant\, and others. Sarah was named a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow for Art Criticism and is a 2018 recipient of the Rabkin Foundation Prize. She is a guest lecturer at several universities in Southeast Michigan and served as a mentor in the NYFA Immigrant Artist Mentorship Program in 2018. Sarah has served as guest curator and juror for institutions including Penn State University (State College\, PA)\, Scarab Club (Detroit\, MI)\, The Terhune Gallery (Toledo\, OH)\, and The Ann Arbor Art Center (Ann Arbor\, MI). Sarah has shown her own work in New York\, Seattle\, Columbus & Toledo\, OH\, Covington\, KY\, and Detroit—including at the Detroit Institute of Arts—with solo shows at Simone De Sousa Gallery and Public Pool. She is primarily concerned with artist and viewer experiences of making and engaging with art\, and conducts ongoing research into the state of contemporary art in redeveloping cities\, with special focus and regard for Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:REDEMPTIONS ARE SOLD OUT! For those who purchased before 12/15\, you will have access to view the film until 12/31/20.\n\nSynopsis:\nAn intimate account of legendary U.S. Representative John Lewis’ life\, legacy and more than 60 years of extraordinary activism — from the bold teenager on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement to the legislative powerhouse he was throughout his career. After Lewis petitioned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to help integrate a segregated school in his hometown of Troy\, Alabama\, King sent “the boy from Troy” a round trip bus ticket to meet with him. From that meeting onward\, Lewis became one of King’s closest allies. He organized Freedom Rides that left him bloodied or jailed\, and stood at the front lines in the historic marches on Washington and Selma. He never lost the spirit of the “boy from Troy” and called on his fellow Americans to get into “good trouble” until his passing on July 17\, 2020.\n\n96 Minutes.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Data Feminism: MIDAS Annual Symposium Keynote
DESCRIPTION:Today\, data science is a form of power. It has been used to expose injustice\, improve health outcomes\, and topple governments. But it has also been used to discriminate\, police\, and surveil. This potential for good\, on the one hand\, and harm\, on the other\, makes it essential to ask: Data science by whom? Data science for whom? Data science with whose interests in mind? Authors of Data Feminism\, Catherine D’Ignazio and Lauren Klein\, address how feminist thinking can be operationalized in order to imagine more ethical and equitable data practices in their keynote speech at the MIDAS Annual Symposium on November 10 at 9:00 AM. Please register to attend this virtual event.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Disguising Prejudice: Popular Rationales as Excuses for Intolerant Expression
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe study the use of popular rationales to justify public anti-minority actions. Rationales to oppose minorities change some people's private opinions\, leading them to take anti-minority actions even if they are not prejudiced against minorities. When these rationales become widespread\, prejudiced people can pool with unprejudiced people who are persuaded\, decreasing the stigma associated with anti-minority expression and enabling greater public opposition to minority groups. In a first experiment\, subjects learn that a previous respondent authorized a donation to an anti-immigrant organization and then make an inference about the respondent's underlying motivations. Subjects informed that their matched respondent learned about a study claiming that immigrants increase crime rates before authorizing the donation see the respondent as less intolerant and more easily persuadable. In a second experiment\, subjects learn about that same study and then choose whether to authorize a publicly observable donation to the anti-immigrant organization. Subjects who are informed that their exposure to the rationale will be publicly observable are substantially more likely to make the donation than subjects who believe that their exposure will remain anonymous. Our findings suggest that prominent public figures can lower the social cost of intolerant expression by popularizing rationales\, contributing to waves of anti-minority behavior.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS) Annual Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Modeling the Perceived Truthfulness of Public Statements on COVID-19: A New Model for Pairwise Comparisons of Objects with Multidimensional Latent Attributes\n\nQiushi Yu – Ph.D. student\, Political Science\n\nWhat is more important for how individuals perceive the truthfulness of statements about COVID-19: a) the objective truthfulness of the statements\, or b) the partisanship of the individual and the partisanship of the people making the statements? To answer this question\, we develop a novel model for pairwise comparisons data that allows for a richer structure of both the latent attributes of the objects being compared and rater-specific perceptual differences than standard models. We use the model to analyze survey data that we collected in the summer of 2020. This survey asked respondents to compare the truthfulness of pairs of statements about COVID-19. These statements were taken from the fact-checked statements on https://www.politifact.com. We thus have an independent measure of the truthfulness of each statement. We find that the actual truthfulness of a statement explains very little of the variability in individuals’ perceptions of truthfulness. Instead\, we find that the partisanship of the speaker and the partisanship of the rater account for the majority of the variation in perceived truthfulness\, with statements made by co-partisans being viewed as more truthful.

SUMMARY:Presentation:The Testing Paradox for COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Reported case-counts for coronavirus are wrinkled with data errors\, namely misclassification of the tests and selection bias associated with who got tested. The number of covert or unascertained infections is large across the world. How can one determine optimal testing strategies with such imperfect data? In this talk\, we propose an optimization algorithm for allocating diagnostic/surveillance tests when your objective is estimating the true population prevalence or detecting an outbreak. Infectious disease models and survey sampling techniques are used jointly to come up with these strategies

SUMMARY:Presentation:Students’ mobility patterns on campus and the implications for the recovery of campus activities post-pandemic
DESCRIPTION:This research project uses location data gathered from WiFi access points on campus to model the mobility patterns of students in order to inform the planning of educational activities that can minimize the transmission risk.\nThe first aim is to understand the general mobility patterns of students on campus to identify physical spaces associating with a high-risk of transmission. For example\, we can extract insights from WiFi data about which locations are the busiest during which time of the day\, how much time was typically spent at each location\, and how do these mobility patterns change over time. The second aim is to understand how students share the same physical spaces on campus (e.g. attending a lecture\, meeting in the same room\, sharing the same dorm). Students are presumably in a close proximity when they are connected to the same WiFi access point. We model a student-to-student network from their co-location activities and use its network centrality measures as proxies of transmission risk (i.e. students in the center of a network would have a higher chance of getting exposed to COVID-19 than those in the periphery). We then correlate network centrality measures with academic information (e.g. class schedule\, course enrollment\, study major\, year of study\, gender\, ethnicity) to determine whether certain features of the academic record are related to transmission risk. For example\, we can identify which groups of students are more vulnerable to potential infections by associating with a high network centrality. Insights from this research project will inform the University of Michigan’s strategies for the recovery of educational activities post-pandemic with empirical evidence of students’ mobility pattern on campus as well as factors that associate with a high-risk of transmission.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Computational Neuroscience\, Time Complexity\, and Spacetime Analytics
DESCRIPTION:The proliferation of digital information in all human experiences presents difficult challenges and offers unique opportunities of managing\, modeling\, analyzing\, interpreting\, and visualizing heterogeneous data. There is a substantial need to develop\, validate\, productize\, and support novel mathematical techniques\, advanced statistical computing algorithms\, transdisciplinary tools\, and effective artificial intelligence apps.\n\nSpacekime analytics is a new technique for modeling high-dimensional longitudinal data\, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This approach relies on extending the notions of time\, events\, particles\, and wave functions to complex-time (kime)\, complex-events (kevents)\, data and inference-functions\, respectively. This talk will illustrate how the kime-magnitude (longitudinal time order) and kime-direction (phase) affect the subsequent predictive analytics and the induced scientific inference. The mathematical foundation of spacekime calculus reveals various statistical implications including inferential uncertainty and a Bayesian formulation of spacekime analytics. Complexifying time allows the lifting of all commonly observed processes from the classical 4D Minkowski spacetime to a 5D spacetime manifold\, where a number of interesting mathematical problems arise.\n\nSpacekime analytics transforms time-varying data\, such as time-series observations\, into higher-dimensional manifolds representing complex-valued and kime-indexed surfaces (kime-surfaces). This process uncovers some of the intricate structure in high-dimensional data that may be intractable in the classical space-time representation of the data. In addition\, the spacekime representation facilitates the development of innovative data science analytical methods for model-based and model-free scientific inference\, derived computed phenotyping\, and statistical forecasting. Direct neuroscience science applications of spacekime analytics will be demonstrated using simulated data and clinical observations (e.g.\, UK Biobank).

SUMMARY:Presentation:Challenges in dynamic mode decomposition
DESCRIPTION:Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) is a powerful tool in extracting spatio-temporal patterns from multi-dimensional time series. DMD takes in time series data and computes eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a finite-dimensional linear model that approximates the infinite-dimensional Koopman operator which encodes the dynamics. DMD is used successfully in many fields: fluid mechanics\, robotics\, neuroscience\, and more. Two of the main challenges remaining in DMD research are noise sensitivity and issues related to Krylov space closure when modeling nonlinear systems. In our work\, we encountered great difficulty in reconstructing time series from multilegged robot data. These are oscillatory systems with slow transients\, which decay only slightly faster than a period.\nHere we present an investigation of possible sources of difficulty by studying a class of systems with linear latent dynamics which are observed via multinomial observables. We explore the influences of dataset metrics\, the spectrum of the latent dynamics\, the normality of the system matrix\, and the geometry of the dynamics. Our numerical models include system and measurement noise. Our results show that even for these very mildly nonlinear conditions\, DMD methods often fail to recover the spectrum and can have poor predictive ability. We show that for a system with a well-posed system matrix\, having a dataset with more initial conditions and shorter trajectories can significantly improve the prediction. With a slightly ill-conditioned system matrix\, a moderate trajectory length improves the spectrum recovery. Our work provides a self-contained framework on analyzing noise and nonlinearity\, and gives generalizable insights dataset properties for DMD analysis.\nWork was funded by ARO MURI W911NF-17-1-0306 and the Kahn Foundation.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Complex Systems Seminar | Choice of Fitness Function Matters. Which One Do Salmon Use?
DESCRIPTION:MEETING LINK: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96616169868\n\nJoint work with:\nJames Breck\, Edward Rutherford\, and Bobbi Low\n \nAbstract: Life history theory focuses on characteristics of organisms\, such as size and age at maturity or tradeoffs between egg number and egg size. It studies how such traits vary as evolutionary responses to natural selection that optimize fitness. One needs to know such characteristics to understand behavior and to design successful conservation strategies. A critical step in such studies is to have the right fitness function. Most theoretical ecologists concerned with life history traits work with one of the classic fitness functions: the intrinsic rate of natural increase r\, the net reproductive number R₀\, or Fisher’s reproductive value of a female of age x\, Vₓ. Their choice among these three is sometimes driven by mathematical parsimony. Working with semelparous and iteroparous Great Lakes salmon\, we find that different fitness functions can lead to very different adaptive behaviors to environmental changes. This observation sheds light on just which fitness function may be operational for a given species.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: Intraoperative Neuromonitoring: Applied Neuroscience in the Operating Room
DESCRIPTION:Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is frequently utilized during surgical procedures that place the brain\, spine\, or other neural elements at risk. The goals of neuromonitoring are first\, to provide neuroprotection to the patient by warning the surgical team of impending injury so that permanent damage can be prevented\, and second\, to assist with neuronavigation. The ability to ascertain the functional integrity of the nervous system during complex procedures permits surgical approaches that can facilitate safer and more complete treatment of patients. This presentation will give an overview of some fundamental concepts found universally in IONM and then describe more specialized methods utilized in less-frequently encountered procedures. Finally\, we will focus our discussion on the use of IONM methods to explore hypotheses concerning the mechanisms of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy for movement disorders.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Zoom Webinar: \"The Gendered Pursuit of Individualism: Fertility Intention and the Meaning of Children in Contemporary Urban China\"
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2020 lecture series will be only available on-line as a Zoom webinar. Registration link below.\n\nReproduction links the personal and the political. Through policies that promote or limit births\, the state attempts to regulate individuals’ reproductive behavior. At the same time\, individuals make reproductive decisions guided by their own fertility intentions and the meaning they attach to children and parenthood. A puzzle remains: Why does active pro-natalist state policy fail to achieve fertility recovery? This talk centers on urban Chinese individuals’ fertility decision-making under the 2016 universal two-child policy. By examining the meaning of children\, Dr. Zhou highlights how a gendered pursuit of individualism underlies women’s and men’s fertility aspiration and behavior. In turn\, she sheds light on the question of why state policies promoting births may not resonate on the individual level.\n \n Yun Zhou is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan. Her research examines social inequality and state-market-family relations through the lens of gender\, marriage\, and reproduction. Her work combines statistical analysis of survey data\, in-depth interviews\, and agent-based computational models. With a focus on gender equity and authoritarian reproductive governance\, Dr. Zhou’s current project investigates the intended and unintended consequences of China’s recent shift toward a universal two-child policy.\n\nZoom webinar registration (required) is here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_iRfY-cuAQ1-a7rzonTaPDQ

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations by Heidi Kumao
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is pleased to present Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations\, a solo exhibition of narrative fabric works and experimental animations by Stamps Professor Heidi Kumao.\n\nUsing fabric cutouts and machine and hand stitching on industrial felt\, Kumao gives physical form to the intangible dynamics underlying ordinary conversations and relationships from a feminist perspective. Intentionally minimal\, each image distills an interaction\, traumatic incident\, or power imbalance into an accessible visual narrative. Recognizable objects such as chairs\, roots\, ladders\, or spotlights set the stage for the story to unfold. Events are captured midstream\, suspended in time like a felt film still.\n\nThe exhibition is inspired\, in part\, by the courage\, testimony\, and experiences of women (like Christine Blasey Ford) who publicly report assault\, harassment\, or misconduct. The #MeToo movement gave voice to thousands of women to tell their personal stories\, but also exposed a hostile backlash meant to silence them. The title\, “Real and Imagined\,” is a deliberate contradiction\; if one is true\, the other must not be. In practice\, however\, both terms are used to reference a woman’s testimony and determine how it is publicly interpreted. Her account is accepted as truthful by many and simultaneously dismissed as imaginary by the court of public opinion: “her memory is wrong\,” “she imagined it.”\n\nThe works in “Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations” make difficult conversations and relationships tangible by stripping them down to their essentials.\n\nWordless physical gestures highlight the psychological and emotional forces at play behind even the smallest of interactions.\n\nBiography\nHeidi Kumao has created award-winning experimental films\, video installations\, cinema machines\, electronic clothing\, and kinetic sculptures. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including shows at Art Science Museum Singapore\, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona\, Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona)\, and Museu da Imagem e do Som (São Paulo). She has received fellowships from the Creative Capital Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a professor at the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nFall 2020 Hours and Policies\nBeginning September 15\, 2020\, Stamps Gallery will be open to University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 pm.\nAll visitors must have a valid M-Card to enter Stamps Gallery. We are unable to welcome the general public to this space at this time.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Art History II: Archaic Greek through Early Christian Art
DESCRIPTION:The second in a sequence of three art history courses\, this study group begins with Archaic Greece and the influence of the Trojan War on vase painting and Egyptian art on statuary of this period. Archaic artists created ways to tell stories on vases and relief sculptures. Even though Classical Greece is much better known to the general public\, we will talk about how Greek art found its way to the West.\nLastly\, we will look at early Christian architecture\, paintings\, and mosaics. I taught the introductory art history courses at Kent State University for eleven years\, and I look forward to discussions with participants in this study group. Molly Lindner brings to this subject her 11 years of teaching art history at Kent State Univ. \nThe Study Group meets on Tuesdays Nov. 10 to Dec. 15 from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access this Study Group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Data Science and Natural Language Processing to Find Rare Classes of Entities From Text
DESCRIPTION:Natural language processing (NLP) and Data Science methods\, including recently popular deep learning-based approaches\, can unlock information from narrative text and have received great attention in the medical domain. Many NLP methods have been developed and showed promising results in various information extraction tasks\, especially for rare classes of named entities. These methods have also been successfully applied to facilitate clinical research. In this workshop\, we will highlight some methods and technologies to identify rare concepts and entities in text in the medical domain as well as other “open” domains.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The State of the Art in Automated and Semi-Automated Video Coding
DESCRIPTION:Video is being acquired at an alarming rate across domains\, including social research\, healthcare\, entertainment\, sporting and more. The ability to code this video—attribute certain properties\, labels\, and other annotations—in support of analytical domain-relevant questions is critical\; otherwise\, human coding is required. Human coding\, however\, is laborious\, expensive\, not repeatable\, and\, worse\, often error prone. Video coding\, an area within artificial intelligence and computer vision\, seeks automated and semi-automated methods to support more effective and robust video coding. This workshop will review the state of the art in video coding from a capabilities\, limitations and tooling perspective and present real-world use-cases.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Functional MRI 2020-21 Symposium Speaker
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Demanding cognitive functions like working memory (WM) depend on functional brain networks being able to communicate efficiently while also maintaining some degree of modularity. Evidence suggests that aging can disrupt this balance between integration and modularity. In this study\, we examined how cognitive training affects the integration and modularity of functional networks in older and younger adults. 23 younger and 23 older adults participated in 10 days of verbal WM training\, leading to performance gains in both age groups. Older adults exhibited lower modularity overall and a greater decrement when switching from rest to task\, compared to younger adults. Interestingly\, younger but not older adults showed increased task-related modularity with training. Furthermore\, whereas training increased efficiency within\, and decreased participation of\, the default-mode network for younger adults\, it enhanced efficiency within a task-specific salience/sensorimotor network for older adults. Finally\, training increased segregation of the default-mode from fronto-parietal/salience and visual networks in younger adults\, while it diffusely increased between-network connectivity in older adults. Thus\, while younger adults increase network segregation with training\, suggesting more automated processing\, older adults persist in\, and potentially amplify\, a more integrated and costly global workspace\, suggesting different age-related trajectories in functional network reorganization with WM training.\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUtf-CurzkoHdXHlCPN2gO3UetH2ba4M0wo

SUMMARY:Other:Kevin Welsher
DESCRIPTION:The biochemical environment of the cellular interior is extremely complex and plays a large role in the function of all biomolecules necessary to life. In this talk\, I will describe two ways our group is trying to understand how the cellular environment affects biomolecule function using single molecule and biophysical tools. In the first part\, I will discuss how single molecule studies have been impeded by the rapid 3D diffusion of single molecules in live cells\, precluding long-duration and high-temporal resolution measurement. To overcome this hurdle\, we have developed 3D single-molecule active real-time tracking (3D-SMART) which enables active feedback tracking of rapidly diffusing and lowly emitting fluorescent particles\, from single virus-like particles and quantum dots in water\, all the way down to single proteins and nucleic acids in viscous solution. 3D-SMART represents a new path toward high resolution single molecule spectroscopy on untethered molecules. In the second half of the talk\, I will discuss our efforts to study the structure of the cytoplasm itself\, starting with intracellular water. Despite its fundamental nature\, direct visualization of subcellular solvation heterogeneity has remained elusive. To explore this question\, we have demonstrated a vibrational-shift imaging approach to probe solvation at the microscopic level by combining spectral-focusing hyperspectral stimulated Raman scattering (hsSRS) with an environmentally-sensitive nitrile probe. When applied to quantitatively measure the spatial variation of solvation in live cells\, this new method reveals significantly reduced solvation in the cytoplasm compared to the nuclear compartment and bulk water! This work sheds light on heterogenous solvation at the subcellular level and opens up new avenues to explore solvation variance in complex systems.\nKevin Welsher (Duke University)

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Antonio Disla - A Performing Afro-Dominican-American in New York City
DESCRIPTION:registration required http://myumi.ch/BoVkl\n\n\"The fire raced along the fuse line and incensed\;\nWe rose to burn it all down.\"\n\n\"Across the nation and the globe\, we all-knowing and all-conquering human beings find ourselves - for lack of a better way to phrase it - in a corner. In the corner\, on a universally ordered timeout like misbehaving children. We were sent from schools\, workplaces\, nightclubs\, bars\, and places to eat to our homes to wait\, like Didi and Gogo in Becketts' Waiting for Godot— awaiting the arrival of Godot\, who never arrives. We were sent home to wait for a safer moment in time for our collective existence\, which has yet to come. Sent home to sit in timeout to reflect\, reevaluate\, and heal as a people and a nation. Dumbfoundedly\, we watched the drafted news reports of lives lost to COVID-19 awe-struck by our leaders' indifference to the severity of the moment. Yet\, with all those pots boiling over\, we heard of a woman who lost her life when startled from slumber in Louisville\, we watched one human-being gunned down while jogging in Georgia\, and yet another human-being deliberately robbed of breath for 8m46sec in Minnesota. As if the death of all those individual lives lost to COVID-19 thus far were not enough\, we return to extinguishing Black lives.\n\nAs an Afro-Dominican American\, it is interesting to exist in a world designed to erase your existence. As a brown-skinned actor\, it is devastating to come to terms with my role in that process of self-erasure. I have navigated between theatrical parts that reinforce negative stereotypes and those that made me question if my performance training would be enough to overcome the cultural discrepancy between myself and the character. It is a question that most often comes up when assuming non-white character roles\, which underscores my complicity in my self-erasure. When the color of one's skin and the racially discriminatory experiences lived is drowned by the loud narratives that support– despite evidence— that racism does not exist. What does one do? When one's cultural background is not enough to garner a role or bring authenticity and truth to a character of perhaps African American descent\, what does the actor do? When does Black equate to one's culture\, and when does it not? Why am I at first glance considered black and then by some not black enough? This presentation aims to address performing one's culture within the context of racial consciousness. Performing an Afro-Dominican-American in New York City.\"\n\nAntonio Disla\, aka Antonio Garcia\, is an Afro-Caribbean Dominican-American theatre practitioner\, born and raised in New York City. He holds an M.F.A. in Performance from The Ohio State University. Since 2012\, Antonio has taught at State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz\, in both the Department of Theatre Arts and the Department of Communication. As a Solo Artist\, he has written and devised both site-specific and staged works dealing with identity and race. Of his works\, the notables to date are Nobody\, a solo piece about race\, and Travel\, which deals with identity and destiny. As a performing company member of The Shakespeare Forum\, he has led workshops in the New York City Public Schools and co-taught Shakespeare for their Youth Forum program. Antonio has proudly worked with The Black Lady Theater\, an African American community theatre company based in Brooklyn\, in such productions as From the Brought of Brooklyn and Bone Soup.\n\nIn the new virtual series\, PERFORMING THE MOVEMENT\, PERFORMING THE MOMENT\, Center for World Performance Studies invites performers and scholars from diverse disciplines to reflect on how performance is being used to respond to the political\, social\, health and environmental crises that we face at this moment.
