SUMMARY:Film Screening:John Lewis: Good Trouble (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:REDEMPTIONS ARE SOLD OUT! For those who purchased before 12/15\, you will have access to view the film until 12/31/20.\n\nSynopsis:\nAn intimate account of legendary U.S. Representative John Lewis’ life\, legacy and more than 60 years of extraordinary activism — from the bold teenager on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement to the legislative powerhouse he was throughout his career. After Lewis petitioned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to help integrate a segregated school in his hometown of Troy\, Alabama\, King sent “the boy from Troy” a round trip bus ticket to meet with him. From that meeting onward\, Lewis became one of King’s closest allies. He organized Freedom Rides that left him bloodied or jailed\, and stood at the front lines in the historic marches on Washington and Selma. He never lost the spirit of the “boy from Troy” and called on his fellow Americans to get into “good trouble” until his passing on July 17\, 2020.\n\n96 Minutes.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Novel Tools to Increase the Reliability and Reproducibility of Population Genetics Research
DESCRIPTION:Advances in population genetic research have the potential to create numerous important advances in the science of population dynamics. The interplay of micro-level biology and macro-level social sciences documents gene–environment–phenotype interactions and allows us to examine how genetics relates to child health and wellbeing. However\, traditional genetics research is based on nonrepresentative samples that deviate from the target population\, such as convenience and volunteer samples. This lack of representativeness may distort association studies. Recent findings have provoked concern about misinterpretation\, irreproducibility and lack of generalizability\, exemplifying the need to leverage survey research with genetics for population-based research. This project is motivated by the research team’s collaborative work on the Fragile Family and Child Wellbeing Study and the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study\, which present these common problems in population genetics studies\, to advance the integration of genetic science into population dynamics research. The project will evaluate sample selection effects\, identify population heterogeneity in polygenic score analysis\, and develop strategies to adjust for selection bias in the association studies of educational attainment\, cognition status and substance use for child health and wellbeing. This interdisciplinary project will strengthen the validity and generalizability of population genetics research\, deepen new understandings of human behavior and facilitate advances in population science.

SUMMARY:Performance:An end-to-end deep learning system for rapid analysis of the breath metabolome with applications in critical care illness and beyond
DESCRIPTION:The metabolome is the set of low-molecular-weight metabolites and its quantification represents a summary of the physiological state of an organism. Metabolite concentration levels in biospecimens are important for many critical care health illnesses like sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Sepsis is responsible for 35% of patients who die in the hospital and ARDS has a mortality rate of 40%. Missing data is a common challenge in metabolomics datasets. Many metabolomics investigators impute fixed values for missing metabolite concentrations and this imputation approach leads to lower statistical power\, biased parameter estimates\, and reduced prediction accuracy. Certain applications of metabolomics data\, like breath analysis by gas chromatography\, used for the prediction or detection of ARDS\, can be done without the quantification of individual metabolites. This would circumvent the quantification step of individual metabolites\, eliminating the missing data problem. Our team has developed a rapid gas chromatography breath analyzer\, which has been challenged by missing data\, a time-consuming process of breath signature alignment\, and the following quantification of metabolites across patients. Analyzing the breath signal directly could eliminate these challenges. End-to-end deep learning systems are neural networks that operate directly on a raw data source and make a prediction directly for the target application. These systems have been successful in diverse fields from speech recognition to medicine. We envision an end-to-end deep learning that leverages transfer learning\, from the collection of many healthy samples\, that could rapidly multiply the applications of our breath analyzer. The end-to-end deep learning system will enhance our breath analyzer so it could be used more efficiently in areas of the intensive care unit to the battlefield to identity patients or soldiers with critical illnesses like sepsis and ARDS and monitor longitudinal changes in breath metabolites.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Machine learning-guided equations for the on-demand prediction of natural gas storage capacities of materials for vehicular applications
DESCRIPTION:Transportation is responsible for nearly one-third of the world’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emission because of burning fossil fuel. While we dream for zero-carbon vehicles\, future projections suggest little decline in fossil fuel consumption by the transportation sector until 2050. Therefore\, ‘bending the curve’ of CO2 emission prompts the adoption of low-cost and reduced-emission alternative fuels. Natural gas (NG)\, the most abundant fossil fuel on earth\, is such an alternative with nearly 25% lower carbon footprint and lower price compared to its gasoline counterpart. However\, the widespread adoption of natural gas as a vehicular fuel is hindered by the scarcity of high-capacity\, light-weight\, low-cost\, and safe storage systems. Recently\, materials-based natural gas storage for vehicular applications have become one of the most viable options. Especially\, nanoporous materials (NPMs) are in the spotlight of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) because of their exceptional energy storage capacities. However\, the number of such NPMs is nearly infinite. It is unknown\, a priori\, which materials would have the expected natural gas storage capacity. Therefore\, searching a high-performing material is like ‘finding a needle in a haystack’ that slows down the speed of materials discovery against growing technological demand. Here we present a novel approach of developing machine learning-guided equations for the on-demand prediction of energy storage capacities of NPMs using a few physically meaningful structural properties. These equations provide users the ability to calculate energy storage capacity of an arbitrary NPM rapidly using only paper and pencil. We show the utility of these equations by predicting NG storage of over 500\,000 covalent-organic frameworks (COFs)\, a class of NPMs. We discovered a COF with record-setting NG storage capacity\, surpassing the unmet target set by DOE. In principle\, the data-driven approach presented here might be relevant to other disciplines including science\, engineering\, and health care.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Fusing Computer Vision And Space Weather Modeling
DESCRIPTION:Space weather has impacts on Earth ranging from rare\, immensely disruptive events (e.g.\, electrical blackouts caused by solar flares and coronal mass ejections) to more frequent impacts (e.g.\, satellite GPS interference from fluctuations in the Earth’s ionosphere caused by rapid variations in the solar extreme UV emission). Earth-impacting events are driven by changes in the Sun’s magnetic field\; we now have myriad instruments capturing petabytes worth of images of the Sun at a variety of wavelengths\, resolutions\, and vantage points. These data present opportunities for learning-based computer vision since the massive\, well-calibrated image archive is often accompanied by physical models. This talk will describe some of the work that we have been doing to start integrating computer vision and space physics by learning mappings from one image or representation of the Sun to another. I will center the talk on a new system we have developed that emulates parts of the data processing pipeline of the Solar Dynamics Observatory’s Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (SDO/HMI). This pipeline produces data products that help study and serve as boundary conditions for solar models of the energetic events alluded to above. Our deep-learning-based system emulates a key component hundreds of times faster than the current method\, potentially opening doors to new applications in near-real-time space weather modeling. In keeping with the goals of the symposium\, however\, I will focus on some of the benefits close collaboration has enabled in terms of understanding how to frame the problem\, measure success of the model\, and even set up the deep network.

SUMMARY:Performance:Decoding the Environment of Most Energetic Sources in the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Astrophysics has always been at the forefront of data analysis. It has led to advancements in image processing and numerical simulations. The coming decade is bringing qualitatively new and larger datasets than ever before. The next generation of observational facilities will produce an explosion in the quantity and quality of data for the most distant sources\, such as the first galaxies and first quasars. Quasars are the most energetic objects in the universe\, reaching luminosity up to 10^14 that of the Sun. Their emission is powered by giant black holes that convert matter into energy according to the famous Einstein’s equation E = mc^2. The largest progress will occur in quasar spectroscopy. Detailed measurements of spectrum of quasar light\, as it is being emitted near the central black hole and partially absorbed by clouds of gas on the way to the observer on Earth\, allows for a particularly powerful probe of quasar environment. Because spectra of different chemical elements are unique\, spectroscopy allows to study not only the overall properties of matter such as density and temperature\, but also the detailed chemical composition of the intervening matter. However\, the interpretation of these spectra is made very challenging by the many sources contributing to the absorption of light. In order to take a full advantage of this new window into the nature of supermassive black holes we need detailed theoretical understanding of the origin of quasar spectral features. In a MIDAS PODS project we are applying machine learning to model and extract such features. We are training the models using data from the state-of-the-art numerical simulations of the early universe. This approach is fundamentally different from traditional astronomical data analysis. We have only started learning what information can be extracted and still looking for a new framework to interpret these data.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! This is a free event\, and all are welcome.\n\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CJS Noon Lecture | Rethinking Medieval Narratives Beyond the Canon--On Ordering the Past
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this lecture will be held on a Wednesday\, rather than our usual Thursday time-slot. \n\nThe received narrative of Japanese literary and historiographic development is one shaped by anachronistic\, European-influenced notions of genre. Drawing on a broad set of medieval works both inside and outside of the canon\, however\, Erin Brightwell's Reflecting the Past argues that rather than hewing to the fixed\, particular binaries of Chinese/Japanese or Tale/Chronicle that came to shape said narrative\, medieval thinkers who sought to order the past relied on shared intellectual commitments expressed in ways that move across and between modern linguistic or disciplinary categories: narrative setting and structure\, language selection\, and cosmological principles. Please join us for a conversation facilitated by Takeshi Watanabe\, author of Flowering Tales: Women Exorcising History in Heian Japan (Harvard University Asia Center\, 2020)\, about the strategies used by medieval authors to render unprecedented historical change sensible.\n \nErin Brightwell is Assistant Professor of Pre-modern Japanese Literature. She holds an MA in Chinese (University of Washington\, Seattle) and a PhD in Classical Japanese Literature (Princeton University). In addition to Reflecting the Past: Place Language and Principle in Japan's Medieval Mirror Genre (Harvard University Asia Center\, 2020)\, her latest publications include the translation of Wang Changxiong's 1943 novella \"Honryū\" (The Torrent) in The Asia-Pacific Journal: Japan Focus (permanent link: https://apjjf.org/2018/01/O.html) and a forthcoming article in Journal of Japanese Studies titled \"Making Meaning: Lexical Glosses as Interpretive Interventions in the Kakaishō.\"\n\nPlease register for the Zoom webinar at: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0yDKoPzaRder5mFVJcOlXA\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | UV/IR Mixing and the Hierarchy Problem
DESCRIPTION:The persistence of the hierarchy problem points to a violation of effective field theory expectations. A compelling possibility is that this results from a physical violation of EFT\, which may arise from correlations between UV and IR physics—as is broadly demanded by gravity. I will discuss Noncommutative Field Theory as a toy model of UV/IR mixing\, where an emergent infrared scale is generated from ultraviolet dynamics. I’ll explore a variety of such theories to develop a picture of how this feature appears\, and to glean lessons to guide the realization of UV/IR mixing in more realistic theories.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Brown Bag:
DESCRIPTION:Qinggang Yu\n\nTitle: Racial residential segregation and economic disparity jointly exacerbate the COVID-19 fatality in large American cities\n\nAbstract:\nThe disproportionately high rates of both infections and deaths of underprivileged racial minorities in the U.S. during the current COVID-19 pandemic show that structural inequality can be lethal. However\, the nature of this structural inequality is poorly understood in the context of the current pandemic. Here\, we hypothesized that two features of the structural inequality\, racial residential segregation and income inequality\, contribute to numerous health-compromising conditions\, which in turn exacerbate COVID-19 fatalities. These two features are particularly lethal when combined. To test this hypothesis\, we examined the growth rate of both confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths in an early period of the outbreak in the counties located in each of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. The growth curve for cases and deaths was steeper in counties located in metropolitan areas that residentially segregate Blacks and Hispanics. Moreover\, this effect of racial residential segregation was augmented by income inequality within each county. The current evidence highlights the role of racial and economic disparity in producing the devastating human toll of the pandemic. It also offers important policy implications for making virus-resilient cities.\n\n\nYuyan Han\n\nTitle: Are Experts Aware Of What They Don’t Know?\nSubtitle: A meta-calibration study on psychologists\n\nAbstract:\nThe Confucius said\, “When you know a thing\, to hold that you know it\; and when you do not know a thing\, to allow that you do not know it – this is knowledge.” Experts are usually found having more accurate self-assessment of knowledge compared to the rest. What drives their better calibration? Simply a larger amount of knowledge\, or superior meta-knowledge as the Confucius asserted? In the current study\, we compared the self-assessment performance between psychologists recruited from the SPSP 2020 Conference and UM undergraduates through Intro Psych Subject Pool on the topic of P value in research.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Speaking American English: A Workshop for English Language Learners
DESCRIPTION:The University Center for Language and Literacy is offering a workshop designed to help you reach personal communication goals. *Speaking American English: A workshop for English Language Learners* offers a supportive environment where you have the opportunity to practice the language skills that are important to you.\n\nOur certified Speech-Language Pathologists use techniques to help non-native English speakers feel more confident in their communications – whether that’s giving a presentation\, or taking notes in a class with a native speaker who speaks fast. The goal of the program is not to eliminate a client’s accent\, but to build confidence in any communication or setting.\n\nParticipants set their own individual goals at the start of the workshop and will work to achieve those goals using a combination of small group activities and one-on-one interaction. The workshop typically runs for 10 weeks\, but will depend on when it begins. If the group workshop does work with your schedule\, please contact us\; individual consultations are available.\n\nWhat to Expect\n* An initial meeting focusing on setting your personal goals and objectives\n* Both group and individual activities\n* Exercises for improving articulation\, rate control\, and projection\n* Increased confidence in social and professional interactions\n* Guidance from a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist\n\nContact UCLL at (734) 764-8440 or visit LanguageExperts.org for more details and to register.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | \nSmall Galaxies\, Big Science: Fundamental Physics from the Faintest Galaxies
DESCRIPTION:Department Colloquium Link: http://myumi.ch/GkgBm\n\nThe existence of dark matter\, which makes up roughly 85% of the matter in the Universe\, indicates a critical gap in our understanding of fundamental physics. To date\, we have been unable to directly detect or produce this mysterious substance in terrestrial laboratories. However\, we have learned an enormous amount about dark matter from astronomical observations. In particular\, the smallest\, faintest\, and most dark-matter-dominated galaxies have proven to be exceptional laboratories for studying the fundamental properties of dark matter. Our Milky Way galaxy is surrounded by dozens of these ultra-faint \"dwarf\" galaxies\, which have only recently been discovered thanks to the unprecedented sensitivity of digital sky surveys. As telescopes grow larger and more powerful\, we continue to find fainter\, more distant\, and more dark-matter-dominated galaxies inhabiting our \"cosmic backyard\". I will describe recent advances in searches for the faintest galaxies\, and how observations of our tiny galactic neighbors can help address one of the foremost open questions in physics.\n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Michael Beauregard Seminar in Macroeconomics: Scalable Expertise
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe document that aggregate or sectoral demand shocks have disproportionately bigger effects on larger firms. Changes in scope\, the number of products/locations\, plays a significant role in this heterogeneity. Motivated by these facts\, we present a theory of firm size\, where both scope and expertise (which determines revenues and profits) are chosen endogenously. The extent to which expertise is scalable (applicable to multiple products)\, as opposed to local (specific to a particular product)\, is also chosen by the firm. The model predicts rich heterogeneity in responses to a sector-wide demand shock: firms with higher revenue per product (conditional on scope) adjust their scope by less\, while those with higher scope (conditional on revenue per peroduct) adjust by more. Using data on multi-product and multi-establishment firms\, we provide empirical evidence in support of these predictions. We also construct a proxy for the scalability of the firm’s expertise and show that the predictions of the model with respect to the scalability of firm-level expertise\, both in the cross-section and in response to shocks\, are also consistent with the patterns observed in the data.\n\n* To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Presentation:Love & Zombies & Literature: What makes Genre Writing Literary?
DESCRIPTION:Join RC Creative Writing faculty Christopher Matthews and Avi Steinberg for a discussion and Q & A about how speculative fiction and the romance genre intersect with literary fiction. If writers such as Margaret Atwood and Octavia Butler have proven that genre writing can also be literature\, how do the publishing industry and creative writing programs distinguish between commercial and literary markets? Our panelists will read from their own work and offer their perspective on what makes genre literary.\n\n>> Avi Steinberg is the author of three books of narrative nonfiction published by Knopf Doubleday: Running the Books (2010)\, The Lost Book of Mormon (2014)\, and The Happily Ever After (2020). His books have been translated into five languages and cited as Best of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle and the New Yorker\, among others. He is currently at work on a biography of the writer and political activist\, Grace Paley\, which will be published by Farrar\, Straus and Giroux\, and on a translation of the biblical story of David\, which will be published by Norton/Liveright. In 2019\, he was awarded a writing residency at Yaddo. He is a contributor to the New Yorker’s Culture Desk\, and a regular features writer for the New York Times Magazine. His essays and reportage have also appeared in the Guardian magazine (‘The Long-Read’)\, Salon\, the Paris Review\, and n+1. He has been leading creative nonfiction workshops in the Residential College since 2018.\n\n>> Christopher Matthews is a poet\, fiction writer\, and sometime scholar of nineteenth-century literature with an MFA from Warren Wilson College and a PhD from the University of Michigan. Raised in California and schooled in Michigan\, he has taught at Kalamazoo College\, Washington & Lee University in Virginia\, and now the Residential College. His creative\, scholarly\, and teaching interests include lyrical and discursive poetry\, storytelling and narrative theory\, film\, monsters\, ghosts\, studies in race/class/gender/sexuality\, and more. Chris’ creative work has appeared widely in such journals as The Massachusetts Review\, Indiana Review\, Beloit Poetry Journal\, and The Cortland Review\, and has been recognized with three Pushcart nominations and two features in Ted Kooser’s syndicated \"American Life in Poetry\" project. His scholarship has appeared in Nineteenth-Century Studies and Victorian Studies\, among others.\n\n>> Join the event at http://myumi.ch/yK195
