SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self\"
DESCRIPTION:In *Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self*\, Detroit artist Sydney G. James brings to the forefront and celebrates the work of Black women. The USPS worker\, the artist\, the event-planning Zoom mom—the paintings in this exhibition reposition the narrative of black women’s visibility and value. Each portrait honors the individual and collective contributions and labors of Black women\, persistent through the pandemics\, through police violence\, and whether seen or unseen.\n\nWith the Gallery closed to the public due to COVID\, *Watch Me Work* will be completely visible from the street. Artwork will be hung in the Washington and Thayer-street first floor windows of the Institute for the Humanities\, with two additional pieces visible through the gallery window on Thayer in a public celebration of these meaningful human relationships and connections.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:John Lewis: Good Trouble (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:REDEMPTIONS ARE SOLD OUT! For those who purchased before 12/15\, you will have access to view the film until 12/31/20.\n\nSynopsis:\nAn intimate account of legendary U.S. Representative John Lewis’ life\, legacy and more than 60 years of extraordinary activism — from the bold teenager on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement to the legislative powerhouse he was throughout his career. After Lewis petitioned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to help integrate a segregated school in his hometown of Troy\, Alabama\, King sent “the boy from Troy” a round trip bus ticket to meet with him. From that meeting onward\, Lewis became one of King’s closest allies. He organized Freedom Rides that left him bloodied or jailed\, and stood at the front lines in the historic marches on Washington and Selma. He never lost the spirit of the “boy from Troy” and called on his fellow Americans to get into “good trouble” until his passing on July 17\, 2020.\n\n96 Minutes.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CSAS | \"Reading the Americanized Joothan: The Translator’s Cringe\" Keynote Speech by Arun Mukhejee followed by \"Engaging Anti-Caste Praxis Across Languages\,\" a Three-day Workshop for Writers\, Translators\, Publishers\, and their Readers
DESCRIPTION:Arun Mukherjee's public keynote speech will be held Friday\, November 13th at 9am (to coincide with Friday evening\, Indian Standard Time.) In ‘Reading the Americanized Joothan: The Translator’s Cringe’ Mukherjee will compare the Samya press and the Columbia University Press editions of her translation of Omprakash Valmiki’s autobiography\, Joothan. She will reflect on the changes which took place as the translation travelled from the Indian edition to the American edition\, leading her to realize the importance of guarding the beauty of the text. The event co-organizers Shalmali Jadhav\, Swarnim Khare and Christi Merrill are interested in asking what choices behind the scenes might lead to increasing openness when texts and cultural contexts displace us from our comfort zones as readers of anti-caste literatures.\n\nThis will be followed by three workshop sessions starting on November 13th and continuing on November 14th and 20th at 9am\, in which authors\, translators and publishers discuss pre-circulated published examples in English\, Hindi\, Marathi and Tamil with registered participants in order to demystify and make visible crucial choices in publishing translated work. SUMMARY:Exhibition:In-Between the World and Dreams
DESCRIPTION:In this multi-venue project led by the Institute for the Humanities\, in collaboration with the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the U-M Museum of Art\, with funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\, Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama explores global exchange\, commerce and the troubling histories of colonialism and slavery in the Western world. \n\nMahama's artistic practice illustrates\, as he explains\, how art education\, art and cultural opportunities \"allow for people to find new ways to acquire knowledge\, not only of themselves\, but their histories and the places and spaces in which they find themselves.\"\n\nEnveloping the contours of a museum building or wall\, the blankets of jute fibers are meant to contrast with the monumentality of the institutional buildings and spaces they cover\, becoming remnants and traces that reference the hands of laborers\, the imprints of colonialism and the interference of Britain and the U.S. in Ghanaian history.\n\nThe project marks the first outdoor exhibition of Mahama's work in the United States. It is responsive to the present moment\, offering students and the broader community the opportunity to engage with the arts in a public space at a time when gatherings inside buildings and museums are limited.\n\nCurator's Statement:\n\nGhanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama’s installations are cumulative moments of reckoning\, mending\, and recycling. Things fall apart\, come undone. His constructions defy any notions of permanence and longevity. They are monuments to the in-between and the upending\, begging the question\, “What can we do?”\n\nMahama incorporates jute sacks—synonymous with the trade markets of Ghana where he lives and works—as a raw material. He works collaboratively with his community to complete the extensive sewing of the sacks required in preparation for his projects. For the U-M installations\, he incorporates materials from his previous seminal works over the last decade as a retrospective.\n\nThe markings\, stitching\, and signs of wear on the jute remind us of the many changing hands and endless labor behind international trade—the human toll of capitalism\, commodification\, and globalization. The fabric itself acts as metaphor for Ghana’s complicated history defined by Dutch colonialism and the Gold Coast slave trade\, British rule till 1957\, and a future de-railed by military coups post-independence.\n\nRather than grand gestures\, Mahama’s installations are humble acts of endurance. They are covert art take-overs\, subverting architecture and disrupting the pristine fascia of our institutional buildings. They hold us accountable for past trespasses. \n\nMahama is committed to offering his own country the same cultural opportunities and experiences available to those in the West. Most recently he designed and opened the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Arts in his hometown of Tamale Ghana\, contributing towards the expansion of his country’s contemporary art scene. An extension of his art practice\, the centre brings Mahama’s many visionary sketches to life\, creating classrooms in old airplanes\, a swimming pool for children’s play\, and public spaces for gatherings and the exchange of ideas.\n\nIn this pivotal year defined by Covid-19\, worldwide protests in support of Black Lives Matter\, climate change\, and our U.S. Presidential election in the balance\, Ibrahim Mahama’s work acknowledges failures and false promises\, but also the opportunities that can reveal themselves in times of crisis. \n\nPerhaps generations emerging from crisis can learn from the ghosts of the past and generate entirely new systems\, not motivated by profit or self-interest\, but by a deep commitment to the hard work ahead\, our willingness to do it\, and to the mutual space for dreams.\n\n–Amanda Krugliak\, arts curator\, Institute for the Humanities and curator of In Between the World and Dreams \n\nIn-Between the World and Dreams is a multi-venue project led by the U-M Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, in partnership with UMMA and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History\, Detroit. \n\nIn-Between the World and Dreams is made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Michael Woodroofe Lecture Series: Emery Brown\, Director of the Harvard–MIT Program of Health Sciences and Technology
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: General anesthesia is a drug-induced\, reversible condition comprised of five behavioral states: unconsciousness\, amnesia (loss of memory)\, antinociception (loss of pain sensation)\, akinesia (immobility)\, and hemodynamic stability with control of the stress response. Our work shows that a primary mechanism through which anesthetics create these altered states of arousal is by initiating and maintaining highly structured oscillations. These oscillations impair communication among brain regions. We illustrate this effect by presenting findings from our human studies of general anesthesia using high-density EEG recordings and intracranial recordings. These studies have allowed us to give a detailed characterization of the neurophysiology of loss and recovery of consciousness due to propofol. We show how these dynamics change systematically with different anesthetic classes and with age. We have developed a principled\, neuroscience-based paradigm for using the EEG to monitor the brain states of patients receiving general anesthesia. We demonstrate that the state of general anesthesia can be rapidly reversed by activating specific brain circuits. Finally\, we demonstrate that the state of general anesthesia can be controlled using closed loop feedback control systems. The success of our research has depended critically on tight coupling of experiments\, signal processing research and mathematical modeling. \n\nBiography: Emery N. Brown\, M.D.\, Ph.D. is the Warren M. Zapol Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School\; an anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital\; and the Edward Hood Taplin Professor of Medical Engineering and Computational Neuroscience at MIT. Brown is an anesthesiologist-statistician whose research is defining the neuroscience of how anesthetics produce general anesthesia. He also develops statistical methods for neuroscience data analysis. Dr. Brown has received the American Society of Anesthesiologists Excellence in Research Award and the Dickson Prize in Science and the Swartz Prize for Computational and Theoretical Neuroscience. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts Sciences and the National Academy of Inventors. Dr. Brown is a member of the National Academy of Medicine\, National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. \n\nThis seminar will be livestreamed via Zoom https://umich.zoom.us/j/94350208889\nThere will be a virtual reception to follow.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Biophysics Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:The Biophysics Virtual Seminar Series presents:\n\nDr. Nancy Forde - Department of Physics\, Simon Fraser University\n\n*“Collagen: a fascinating responsive material building block from Nature”*\n\nJoin us on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96009492561\n\nAbstract: Multicellular life is scaffolded by structures that maintain cells in the desired locations and organizations. Conventionally these extracellular scaffolds have been viewed as rigid\, unchanging supports laid down during development and unaltered except by injury or disease. Recent scientific advances are revealing instead that these matrices are highly dynamic and respond to changes in their local microenvironment\, in turn affecting cells. The collagen family of proteins has been selected via evolution as the preferred building block of these extracellular structures. \n\nIn this talk\, I will introduce some of the fascinating physical properties of the unique triple-helix structure of collagen\, and will highlight the results of our investigations into its mechanical properties. Our single-molecule approaches include centrifuge force microscopy\, optical tweezers and atomic force microscopy\, and many parallels can be drawn with the mechanics of DNA. Our work is revealing clues as to how stability is encoded within collagen’s sequence\, and how collagen’s triple helix balances structural stability with responsiveness to applied force and chemical environment.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Building Your Vision Muscle\; Leaning Into Resilience
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTER: Patricia Berry\, Owner and Lead Consultant\, Patricia Berry Consulting\n\nClick to RSVP and to receive the Zoom link by email: cew.umich.edu/events/building-your-vision-muscle-leaning-into-resilience\n\nTacit Knowledge\, a.k.a. your “Vision Muscle”\, is the things we know\, but don’t yet have words to express. It is the culmination of our lifetime of experiences\, along with the experiences and lessons handed down from those who raised us. Other ways to say it is our sixth sense or our gut intuition\; knowledge that is inside us and that we access on a regular basis but haven’t yet\, or maybe don’t yet know how to\, put into words. It is the thing that entrepreneurs\, leaders\, creatives\, and everyday people put to use to know what they should do next\, because they can imagine it\, and they know it is right because it feels right. It’s hard to quantify\, but your own personal visionary knowledge can often be accessed by getting our left brain — what I like to think of as our resume brain — out of the way\, just for a while\, so that we can let loose our own unique creative knowing that is tacit knowledge. As we begin to recognize and trust our own tacit knowledge\, we can begin to learn how to intentionally access it in order to help us make decisions that allow us to successfully navigate a sometimes uncertain future. Come along with me for a series of Vision Muscle workshops focused on aspects of work and life where easy access to our vision muscle might be particularly helpful. All of the workshops will be using Vision Muscle strategies\, with unique subjects for you to explore based on your own experience\, vision and expertise. This self-directed experience will allow you to access your own unique knowledge and leave you with skills that will allow you to call up your Vision Muscle on a regular basis.\n\nUsing visual images and reflective writing\, participants will learn how to access their tacit knowledge\, or Visioning Muscles\, to gain insight into tools they already have for living with a resilience that supports a more joyful and celebratory life\, no matter their current circumstances. Join facilitator\, entrepreneur and visioning geek Patricia Berry for a hands-on\, interactive experience that brings out your natural visioning abilities. The Zoom Doors to this interactive and reflective workshop will close promptly at noon\, so please arrive a few minutes early to ensure your participation!

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CSEAS Lecture Series. Uprooting the Diasporic Histories of Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:Free event\; please register in advance at: http://myumi.ch/mnbRl\n\nWhat can diasporas teach us about the history of Southeast Asia as a region\, dominated as it is by narratives of hospitality and receptiveness to other cultures and peoples? Remarkably\, the Arab diaspora in Southeast Asia demarcated their own legal jurisdictions by anchoring their kinship obligations and commercial interests that they had developed over several centuries across the Indian Ocean. During the nineteenth century\, links between homeland and destination faded into the background in the colonial period as the diasporic elite remade their lives in Southeast Asia often according to new colonial moulds. Indeed\, the Arab diaspora deliberately chose to lean on bureaucratic infrastructure in their effort to construct new scales of responsibility\, jurisdiction\, and sovereignty. At the same time\, colonial rulers yoked their identities outside of the region viewing them as hybrid\, creole\, mixed and sometimes even outright foreign\, effectively uprooting their histories from the region. This lecture will look at emblems of diasporic lives in the form of legal sources to explore the relationship between indigenous Southeast Asians\, diasporas and colonial authorities.\n \n Nurfadzilah Yahaya is assistant professor of history at National University of Singapore. Prior to this\, she was an Early Career Fellow in Islamic Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. Her book Fluid Jurisdictions: Colonial Law and Arabs in Southeast Asia is published by Cornell University Press (2020). Her articles have appeared in Law and History Review\, Journal of Women’s History\, Indonesia nad the Malay World and Muslim World.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LEAD: No Justice\, No Peace: Anti-Racist Activism in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:LEAD\, Leading Equity And Diversity\, is a series of conversations where attendees have the opportunity to hear from a diverse group of guests who lead and/or support DEI and social justice initiatives. This LEAD conversation will address how higher education administrators\, faculty\, and staff can work in collective action with student activists toward racial equity. In the midst of an unprecedented pandemic and highly-publicized uprisings against racism\, there has been a significant upsurge in student activism advocating for a more inclusive and equitable environment. How can higher education professionals support this just cause and leverage the passion and experiences of student activists.\nAccess Real-Time Translation (CART) captioning services will be available.\nSpeakers\nJ’Taime Lyons\nJ’Taime Lyons is a dual degree M.B.A./M.P.P. student at the University of Michigan from Rocky Mount\, NC. She is the recipient of numerous awards\, including the Truman Scholarship\, and has devoted her life to closing the opportunity gap and connecting schools with their communities. She is currently an intern at Durham’s Children Initiative (DCI)\,working to ensure that racial equity is centered within its Early Childhood Action Plan for all children birth to eight years old. At the University of Michigan\, she currently serves as the Student Affairs Committee chair for the Ford School of Public Policy\, Vice President of Ally Engagement for the Black Business Student Association\, and is a Business + Impact (B + I) Ambassador at Ross School of Business.\nCharles H.F. Davis III\nCharles H.F. Davis III is a third-generation educator committed to the lives\, love\, and liberation of everyday Black people. As an assistant professor of higher education at the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education at the University of Michigan\, Dr. Davis’ research and teaching broadly examine issues of power\, systemic oppression\, and organized resistance in college and its social contexts. His current ethnographic project interrogates how law enforcement approaches to campus safety and security\, as enforced by campus police\, are interconnected with logics of state surveillance\, control\, and carceral punishment. Dr. Davis is especially interested in the role borderless organizing and resource mobilization efforts undertaken by students and local communities are working toward abolition and reimagining public safety. He is the founder and director of the Scholars for Black Lives collective and considers Black Lives Matter Los Angeles his primary political home.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/BoRe8.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LUNCH & LEARN: \"Predictive Analytics\, Energy Systems\, and Storms\" — Seth Guikema
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to all U-M students\, faculty\, and staff.\n\nTitle:\nPredictive Analytics\, Energy Systems\, and Storms\n\nAbstract: \nElectric power systems are critical for daily life\, yet they regularly experience widespread impacts from natural hazards like hurricanes and thunderstorms. Having predictions of these impacts prior to the event has the potential to improve the response by utilities\, allowing them to restore power more quickly and efficiently. This talk will present an overview of how predictive modeling can help utilities in this setting. This provides an example of the broader type of work that IOE students can do in the area of predictive modeling.\n\nBio:\nDr. Seth Guikema is a Professor in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan. Prior to arriving at U-M in 2015\, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering (DoGEE) at Johns Hopkins University. He is also an adjunct Professor II in the Department of Safety\, Economics\, and Planning at the University of Stavanger in Norway\, and a Data Science Research Fellow at One Concern\, Inc.\, a Silicon Valley start-up. His academic training includes a B.S. in Civil & Environmental Engineering (Cornell University)\, a M.S. in Civil & Environmental Engineering (Stanford University)\, a M.E. by thesis in Civil Engineering (University of Canterbury in New Zealand)\, a Ph.D. in Management Science & Engineering with a concentration in Engineering Risk & Decision Analysis (Stanford University)\, and a postdoctoral research position in Civil & Environmental Engineering (Cornell University). \n\nDr. Guikema's research is highly interdisciplinary. Much of his group's recent work is focused on the problems of urban and infrastructure resilience and sustainability in a changing climate\, grounded in data-driven risk analysis and complex systems simulation. One major topic is developing\, testing\, and implementing risk analysis methods based in machine learning\, stochastica and agent-based simulation\, game theory\, and decision analysis. Another strong research thrust in the group is using modern simulation methods to more fully understand the role of human behavior in the evaluation of vulnerability and risk in hazard-prone regions. \n\nSeth is currently the Area Editor for Mathematical Modeling in the journal Risk Analysis\, was an Associate Editor for the ASCE Journal of Infrastructure Systems until 2018\, and is on the editorial boards of the journals Reliability Engineering and System Safety and Performability Engineering. He previously completed a three-year term on the governing Councils of the International Society for Risk Analysis and the INFORMS Decision Analysis Society.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Museum Studies Program\, Museums at Noon
DESCRIPTION:How do curatorial works and memorial sites simultaneously serve as tools for constructing national identities and as materials in a state’s claim for transnational reputation? How can we frame these questions in the context of post-dictatorial nations and their contested heritage? Looking at the two different cases of Ukraine and Spain\, this presentation will unravel the multiplicity of ways in which cultural artifacts and narratives become the very sites for these discussions and crystalize the impact of these often violent legacies.\nCo-presentation by Grace Mahoney (PhD candidate\, Slavic Languages & Literatures) and Felix Zamora-Gomez (PhD candidate\, Romance Languages & Literatures)\n\nComplete details here: http://ummsp.rackham.umich.edu/event/museum-narratives-and-transnational-reputations-history-state-legitimacy-and-contested-heritage-in-ukraine-and-spain/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Old Globalization and the New Globalization
DESCRIPTION:Globalization isn’t dead\, but it increasingly has to do more with trading ideas and services than with moving metal containers stuffed with manufactured goods. This talk will discuss how globalization is changing and why. \nMarc Levinson is an independent historian\, economist\, and journalist whose career has centered on making complex economic issues understandable to the general public. Marc spent many years as an economic journalist\, including a turn as finance and economics editor of The Economist in London. Returning to New York\, he worked as an economist for J.P. Morgan Chase\, developing a unique industry economics function and then initiating the bank’s environmental research for stock and bond investors. He later served as a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. His books include the business classic The Box: How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger\; The Great A&P and the Struggle for Small Business in America\, which won wide praise from across the political spectrum for exploring the tension between capitalism and competition in the U.S. economy\; and An Extraordinary Time\, showing how the sudden end of the postwar boom in the early 1970s led voters in many countries to turn away from activist government in favor of free-market ideas. He will be speaking about his latest book\, Outside the Box\, a lively history of globalization and its consequences.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Minicolloquium | Cosmology in the Era of Multi-Messenger Astronomy With Gravitational Waves
DESCRIPTION:Minicolloquium Link: http://myumi.ch/AxgeZ\n\nMotivated by the exciting prospect of a new wealth of information arising from the first observations of gravitational and electromagnetic radiation from the same astrophysical phenomena\, the Dark Energy Survey (DES) has established a search and discovery program for the optical transients associated with LIGO/Virgo events (DESGW). Using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam)\, DESGW has contributed to the discovery of the optical transient associated with the neutron star merger GW170817\, and produced the first cosmological measurements using gravitational wave events as standard sirens. After three successful observing campaigns\, I present\, in this talk\, an overview of our results and their implications for the emerging field of multi-messenger cosmology with gravitational waves and optical data.\n

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Fall 2020 - AE285 Seminar Series\, Extreme Physiology: Engineering Meetings Physiology in Space
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kathryn Clark\nAssociate Chair\, Movement Science\, School of Kinesiology\nAdjunct Associate Research Scientist\, Aerospace Engineering\n\nSpace enthusiasts have been talking about going to Mars since we launched the first astronauts into space. We have not actually travelled very far from our home planet and we are only beginning to understand physiological changes and the potential for using science and engineering to overcome those challenges. For example\, we know we on Earth are protected by the van Allen belts. Can we find a way to protect astronauts who travel beyond the 36\,000 miles of van Allen belt coverage from the radiation? Can we overcome the loss of blood cells\, muscle mass\, proprioception\, and immune system function? Some of these are scientific questions\; others are engineering problems to solve. NASA and her international partners must work together to solve these problems if we are ever to travel back to the Moon\, on to Mars\, and beyond. This generation of scientists and engineers are going to be the people who overcome these challenges. A side benefit is for people all over the world to overcome differences and work together on this greatest of adventures.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nDr. Kathy Clark is currently a Movement Science Lecturer in the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology. She received her Ph.D. in Kinesiology from the University of Michigan. Prior to her time at the school\, Dr. Clark was a member of the Stafford/Anfimov Advisory Panel and the Stafford-Covey Return to Flight Task Group at NASA. She also served as Chief Scientist at NASA for both the Human Exploration & Development of Space Enterprise and the International Space Station.\nDr. Clark is a professional speaker who uses her experience to motivate and inspire others to reach for the stars in their careers. She also works to promote education with groups like the Jean-Michel Cousteau Society\, the Square One Education Network\, the Argos Foundation\, the National Marine Sanctuaries\, the Sea World Hubbs Institute\, SAS Games\, the National Space Grant Foundation\, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s After School All Stars\, and the 27 Foundation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Global Quieting of Anthropogenic\, High-Frequency Seismic Noise Due to COVID-19 Pandemic Lockdown Measures
DESCRIPTION:Zoom Meeting ID: 99893078888\nHuman activities causes high-frequency vibrations that propagate into the ground as seismic waves. \"Lockdown\" measures were enforced all around the world to mitigate the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The widespread changes in human activities had a direct impact on the environment\, for example with the reduction of air pollution or audible noise. It also led to a months-long reduction in seismic noise. The 2020 seismic noise quiet period is the longest and most prominent global anthropogenic seismic noise reduction on record. The reduction is strongest at surface seismometers in highly populated areas\, but this seismic quiescence extends for many kilometers radially and hundreds of meters in depth. This period provides an opportunity to detect subtle signals from subsurface seismic sources that would have been concealed in noisier times and to benchmark sources of anthropogenic noise. A strong correlation between seismic noise and independent measurements of human mobility suggests that seismology provides an absolute\, real-time estimate of human activities. The initial lockdown rules were usually immediate and strictest in the beginning. Then\, the lifting of the rules was more progressive. This could allow for studying and separating different noise sources. In this communication\, we will also shortly present the community behind this study\, the tools and ways we used to coordinate the analyses and to write the article.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women's Vote
DESCRIPTION:Organized by AIGA in partnership with League of Women Voters\n\n2020 marks the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, granting women the right to vote in 1920. It was the first legislation for women’s voting rights. Not until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 were voting rights of ALL women protected and enforced\, and intimidation tactics progressively eliminated.  The Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote poster campaign\, organized by AIGA in partnership with the League of Women Voters\, commemorates this milestone. A core group of invited women of design submitted the first 65 non-partisan posters\, to launch the initiative with their vision and voices. Through the posters\, these women joined forces to collectively contribute to dialogue in design and society. This moment in history is an incredible opportunity to catalyze women in design\, voting rights\, citizenship\, community\, and diversity. The collection aspires to not only support present day voter participation\, but to also serve as a backdrop for discourse and examination of the history of voting rights and women’s fight for equality.  The poster initiative continues at aiga.org/vote\, where AIGA members can contribute posters to motivate the American public to register and turn out to vote in the 2020 general election\, as well as local elections to come. Posters are available for free download online.\n\nThe Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote exhibition at Stamps Gallery includes a selection of the 65 posters chosen by a committee of Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Nicholas Dowgwillo\, Eloise Janssen\, Keesa V. Johnson\, Francis Nunoo-Quarcoo\, Endi Poskovic\, Destini Riley\, and Stamps Gallery. The exhibition includes posters by Audrey Bennett\, Johanna Björk\, Karen Cheng\, Emily Comfort\, Jenny El-Shamy\, Dinah Fried\, Karin Fong\, Anne M. Giangiulio\, Annabelle Gould\, Brockett Horne\, Meena Khalili\, nicole killian + shawné michaelain holloway\, Karen Kurycki\, Marty Maxwell Lane\, Zuzana Licko\, Ana Llorente\, Beatriz Lozano\, Kelly Salchow MacArthur\, Rebeca Mendez\, Lana Rigsby\, Kaleena Sales\, Renee Seward\, Laurel Shoemaker\, Nancy Sklolos\,  Hannah Smotrich\, Shanti Sparrow\, Jennifer Sterling\, Fearn de Vicq\, Cymone Wilder\, and Lynne Yun.\n\nFall 2020 Hours and Policies\nBeginning September 15\, 2020\, Stamps Gallery will be open to University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 pm.\nAll visitors must have a valid M-Card to enter Stamps Gallery. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Honors Seminar Series: Ethan Kross
DESCRIPTION:On October 8\, 2013 Malala Yousafzai appeared on the Daily Show to talk about her harrowing experience surviving the Taliban’s attempt to assassinate her. At one point during the interview she described how she reacted when she discovered that the Taliban were planning to kill her. “I used to think that the Tali[ban] would come and he would just kill me\,” she told to Stewart. “But then I said\, if he comes\, what would you do Malala? Then I would reply to myself\, Malala just take a shoe and hit him…” \n\nMalala’s interview provides a window into the at times curious ways that we reflect on our lives. Although we all have an inner monologue that we engage in from time to time\, an inner voice that guides our moment-to-moment reflections\, people often report referring to themselves in strikingly different ways when they introspect. Whereas people typically use 1st person singular pronouns (e.g.\, I\, me\, my) to refer to themselves during introspection\, they at times also use their own name and other non-1st-person pronouns to refer to themselves as well. \n\nIn this talk\, Professor Ethan Kross will review findings from a growing body of psychological and neuroscience research\, which suggests that far from representing a simple quirk of speech\, engaging in such distanced self-talk enhances people’s ability to control their thoughts\, feelings and behavior under stress.\n\nYou can register here: https://myumi.ch/0W1Op

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations by Heidi Kumao
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is pleased to present Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations\, a solo exhibition of narrative fabric works and experimental animations by Stamps Professor Heidi Kumao.\n\nUsing fabric cutouts and machine and hand stitching on industrial felt\, Kumao gives physical form to the intangible dynamics underlying ordinary conversations and relationships from a feminist perspective. Intentionally minimal\, each image distills an interaction\, traumatic incident\, or power imbalance into an accessible visual narrative. Recognizable objects such as chairs\, roots\, ladders\, or spotlights set the stage for the story to unfold. Events are captured midstream\, suspended in time like a felt film still.\n\nThe exhibition is inspired\, in part\, by the courage\, testimony\, and experiences of women (like Christine Blasey Ford) who publicly report assault\, harassment\, or misconduct. The #MeToo movement gave voice to thousands of women to tell their personal stories\, but also exposed a hostile backlash meant to silence them. The title\, “Real and Imagined\,” is a deliberate contradiction\; if one is true\, the other must not be. In practice\, however\, both terms are used to reference a woman’s testimony and determine how it is publicly interpreted. Her account is accepted as truthful by many and simultaneously dismissed as imaginary by the court of public opinion: “her memory is wrong\,” “she imagined it.”\n\nThe works in “Real and Imagined: Fabric Works and Video Animations” make difficult conversations and relationships tangible by stripping them down to their essentials.\n\nWordless physical gestures highlight the psychological and emotional forces at play behind even the smallest of interactions.\n\nBiography\nHeidi Kumao has created award-winning experimental films\, video installations\, cinema machines\, electronic clothing\, and kinetic sculptures. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including shows at Art Science Museum Singapore\, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona\, Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona)\, and Museu da Imagem e do Som (São Paulo). She has received fellowships from the Creative Capital Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a professor at the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nFall 2020 Hours and Policies\nBeginning September 15\, 2020\, Stamps Gallery will be open to University of Michigan faculty\, staff\, and students on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 pm.\nAll visitors must have a valid M-Card to enter Stamps Gallery. SUMMARY:Auditions:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition\n\nStamps Gallery is proud to kick-off the fall semester with Respond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Student Poster & Video Exhibition\, which brings together powerful posters and playful videos made by the students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.\n\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the stakeholders in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We found inspiration in the thoughtful words of renowned civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis (1940-2020) who wrote\, “My fellow Americans\, this is a special moment in our history. Just as people of all faiths and no faiths\, and all backgrounds\, creeds\, and colors banded together decades ago to fight for equality and justice in a peaceful\, orderly\, non-violent fashion\, we must do so again.” His powerful words are a reminder for all of us - present and future generations to stay hopeful\, proactive\, and resilient in our collective efforts to end racial discrimination and foster a true democracy. \n\nIn this spirit\, Stamps Gallery invited the undergraduate and graduate students at Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, to design posters and make videos to respond and contemplate what each of us can do to build a stronger community\, one that is based on the values of racial equality\, justice and belonging. How can we acknowledge our own biases\, learn from each other\, and listen to the voices of those that have been silenced? We are at a pivotal moment in our history as the pandemic radically transforms everyday life. Through this exhibition Stamps Gallery asks the UM community to come together as artists and audiences and envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging and empathy.\n\nRespond/ Resist/ Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition includes work by Emily Albright\, Adriana Alcala\, Nathan Byrne\, David Forsee\, Eloise Jansenn\, Rey Jeong\, Sohyun Lim\, Anika Love\, Maggie McConnell\, Willian Minzer\, Judah Premble\, Casey Rheault\, Natalia Rocafuerte\, Jenna Scheen\, Ellie Schmidt\, Abigail Seguin\, LaKyla Thomas\, Elijah Thompson\, Benjamin Winans\, and Molly Wu.\n\nArtwork was selected through an open call by a committee of Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Nicholas Dowgwillo\, Eloise Janssen\, Keesa V. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Theory: Caution and Reference Effects (oint with Simone Cerreia-Vioglio and David Dillenberger)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nWe establish a theoretical link between three phenomena at the core of behavioral economics: the Endowment Effect\, Loss Aversion\, and violations of Expected Utility as in the Certainty Effect. In our model\, all jointly stem from one single force: uncertainty about the utility function to use and caution. Behaviorally\, we show that our model is derived from positing a form of the certainty effect\, that we show implies both Loss Aversion and the Endowment Effect. We analyze further implications of our model and demonstrate how it can organize existing empirical evidence of the Endowment Effect\, and how it is conceptually and behaviorally distinct from other popular approaches\, e.g.\, Cumulative Prospect Theory.

SUMMARY:Auditions:Kelly M. Murdoch-Kitt: The People Beyond the Screen: Designing for human connection
DESCRIPTION:Designing for human connection and mutual respect are common threads in User Experience (UX) Designer Kelly Murdoch-Kitt’s projects explore how to improve the ways people work together. Moving beyond the user experience of the digital landscape\, Murdoch-Kitt examines ways that UX can aid in inclusivity and empowerment. Spanning many different disciplines\, Murdoch-Kitt’s recent projects have included process design for the improved care of heart patients\, an online platform that fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration in academia\, and a long-running research project on improved human connection between remote collaborators from different cultural backgrounds. Murdoch-Kitt and her research partner\, Associate Professor Denielle Emans\, PhD\, of Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar\, have developed over 30 visual thinking activities dedicated to the task of initiating and sustaining collaborative intercultural work. Though the participants in their study have been design students based in the United States and Middle East\, they define the term intercultural collaboration more broadly — involving teams working across national borders\, but also across different fields of study\, professions\, cultures\, and social differences. These visual thinking activities\, alongside their framework for intercultural teamwork\, are the focus of their new book\, Intercultural Collaboration by Design: Drawing from Differences\, Distances\, and Disciplines through Visual Thinking\, published by Routledge in 2020.\n\nMurdoch-Kitt worked as a graphic designer in Raleigh\, North Carolina before completing her Master’s in Graphic Design at North Carolina State University. Prior to joining faculty at the Stamps School of Art & Design\, Murdoch-Kitt served as an Assistant Professor in the School of Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She also taught in the Graphic Design Programs at the University of San Francisco and California College of the Arts. Her excellence in teaching and contributions to service within the discipline have been recognized by the Design Incubation Communication Design Educator Awards. Originally from Richmond\, Virginia\, Murdoch-Kitt believes that growing up at an intersection of social inequities led her to explore ways that design could bring people together equitably.\n\nHow to Watch\n\nAll speaker series events will be webcast on Fridays at 8 pm EST at http://pennystampsevents.org and at https://www.dptv.org/programs/arts-culture/penny-stamps-series/ starting Friday\, September 18. You can also watch the talks and join the conversation on the Penny Stamps Series Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/PennyStampsSeries/.\n\nNotice of uncensored content\n\nIn accordance with the University of Michigan’s Standard Practice Guidelines on “Freedom of Speech and Artistic Expression\,” the Penny Stamps Speaker Series does not censor our speakers or their content.
