SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self\"
DESCRIPTION:In *Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self*\, Detroit artist Sydney G. James brings to the forefront and celebrates the work of Black women. The USPS worker\, the artist\, the event-planning Zoom mom—the paintings in this exhibition reposition the narrative of black women’s visibility and value. Each portrait honors the individual and collective contributions and labors of Black women\, persistent through the pandemics\, through police violence\, and whether seen or unseen.\n\nWith the Gallery closed to the public due to COVID\, *Watch Me Work* will be completely visible from the street. Artwork will be hung in the Washington and Thayer-street first floor windows of the Institute for the Humanities\, with two additional pieces visible through the gallery window on Thayer in a public celebration of these meaningful human relationships and connections.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Results or Roses: New and Assorted Works
DESCRIPTION:View the online gallery at https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/humanitiesgalleries/sarah-rose-sharp/\n\nResults or Roses: New and Assorted Works is a virtual exhibition by artist and writer Sarah Rose Sharp and part of the Institute for the Humanities' Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded \"High Stakes Art\" initiative. The exhibition of new and collected fiber-based art incorporates salvaged and found bits of cultural and fiber art that\, as she explains\, \"forms a discourse that is physical rather than textual.\"\n\nThanks to the grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\, we supported Sharp's work on Results and Roses during the summer of 2020\, but due to COVID-19 were forced to postpone the pop-up exhibition also scheduled for summer 2020. This fall we installed Results and Roses as a pop-up exhibition in the Osterman Common Room. Due to building security\, it's not open to the general public\, but we are thrilled to present the work online as a virtual exhibition. \n\nAbout the Artist\nSarah Rose Sharp is a Detroit-based writer\, activist\, photographer\, and multimedia artist. She writes about art and culture for Art in America\, Hyperallergic\, Flash Art\, Sculpture Magazine\, ArtSlant\, and others. Sarah was named a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow for Art Criticism and is a 2018 recipient of the Rabkin Foundation Prize. She is a guest lecturer at several universities in Southeast Michigan and served as a mentor in the NYFA Immigrant Artist Mentorship Program in 2018. Sarah has served as guest curator and juror for institutions including Penn State University (State College\, PA)\, Scarab Club (Detroit\, MI)\, The Terhune Gallery (Toledo\, OH)\, and The Ann Arbor Art Center (Ann Arbor\, MI). Sarah has shown her own work in New York\, Seattle\, Columbus & Toledo\, OH\, Covington\, KY\, and Detroit—including at the Detroit Institute of Arts—with solo shows at Simone De Sousa Gallery and Public Pool. She is primarily concerned with artist and viewer experiences of making and engaging with art\, and conducts ongoing research into the state of contemporary art in redeveloping cities\, with special focus and regard for Detroit.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:BME Master's Defense: George Malinee
DESCRIPTION:Traumatic bone injuries are very common orthopedic conditions that often require advanced treatment. The Masquelet technique is an existing two-stage surgical method used to heal traumatic injuries and non-unions. Last year in the United States alone there were 500\,000 bone graft procedures performed to heal and treat these traumatic bone injuries or defects. The majority of these grafting procedures are necessary due to the size of these defects. These defects are called critical size defects and are defined by defects that are too large to heal naturally or defects that are more than 2.5 times the radius of the bone. The crux of the Masqulet technique is the induction of a biological membrane that provides the proper environment for osteogenesis. There is a desire to use a tissue engineering approach to fabricate and culture these membranes in vitro to later be used as part of the Masquelet technique. A tissue engineering approach was taken to engineer these membranes using a fibrin hydrogel platform seeded with normal human lung fibroblasts or a co-culture of fibroblasts or human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Constructs were analyzed for axial and radial compaction\, cell viability\, and cell morphology at differing time points and under different culture media conditions. Viable\, vascularized constructs were able to be reliably manufactured and cultured allowing for characterization of the system. Although this work is not exhaustive\, it sheds some light on a possible tissue engineering approach to work in conjunction with the Masquelet technique. Future work will focus on exploring other properties of the fibrin constructs as well as characterizing constructs made of collagen\, and a combination of collagen and fibrin.\n\nDate: Wednesday\, December 2\, 2020\nTime: 6:30 AM\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92706362206\nChair: Dr. Jan Stegemann

SUMMARY:Film Screening:John Lewis: Good Trouble (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:REDEMPTIONS ARE SOLD OUT! For those who purchased before 12/15\, you will have access to view the film until 12/31/20.\n\nSynopsis:\nAn intimate account of legendary U.S. Representative John Lewis’ life\, legacy and more than 60 years of extraordinary activism — from the bold teenager on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement to the legislative powerhouse he was throughout his career. After Lewis petitioned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to help integrate a segregated school in his hometown of Troy\, Alabama\, King sent “the boy from Troy” a round trip bus ticket to meet with him. From that meeting onward\, Lewis became one of King’s closest allies. He organized Freedom Rides that left him bloodied or jailed\, and stood at the front lines in the historic marches on Washington and Selma. He never lost the spirit of the “boy from Troy” and called on his fellow Americans to get into “good trouble” until his passing on July 17\, 2020.\n\n96 Minutes.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Curating Covid: Material and Visual Cultures of the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:While there is so far no known cure for Covid and the disease continues to kill thousands daily around the globe\, humanity has spent the better part of this year attempting to make do – some by doing their best to protect themselves and their loved ones as they continue to perform the work essential to their survival or deemed essential by society\; others\, by sheltering in place\, reducing the radius of our daily activities\, developing new routines. How will we know and remember all this? Who is the chronicler of Covid\, who are its curators? What will be the sources\, not of the political histories and for future medical research\, but for narrating the pandemic as experience\, for explaining its everyday reality to future generations?\n \nThis panel of brief presentations aims to prompt our collective thinking about a Covid archive\, and how it will be constructed. Presenters from different disciplines and national backgrounds will be asked to share images or objects that bring our pandemic present into focus and allow us to explore together questions for the future: who is collecting what? What are the objects in which our daily experience materializes\, and which might speak to the future? Where and how does the pandemic leave its traces in our visual cultures\, and (how) do these differ depending on national contexts? The virus itself knows no borders\, but can we discern transnational and global patterns in our responses in an increasingly fractured world?\n\nSPEAKERS\n\nAlexandra Arkhipova is senior research fellow and head of the Contemporary Folklore Monitoring Research Group at the School of Advanced Studies in the Humanities\, Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration in Moscow\, Russia. She is also a professor at the Russian State University for the Humanities and the Russian School of Economics. She is a leading expert on political jokes\, rumors\, and legends\, on the concept of money in traditional society\, and on the folklore of protest. Her research group is currently engaged in a multi-year study of “infodemia\,” the World Health Organization’s term for the spate of false and potentially dangerous misinformation that flows through and infects the public discourse much like a viral pandemic. Dr. Arkhipova’s book *Dangerous Soviet Things: Urban Legends and Fear in the USSR\,* written with Anna Kirzyuk\, won the Liberal Mission Foundation’s 2020 Prize for the best analysis of current events.\n\nSara Blair is Patricia S. Yaeger Collegiate Professor of English at the University of Michigan. Her publications include *How the Other Half Looks: The Lower East Side and the Afterlives of Images*\; *Harlem Crossroads: Black Writers and the Photograph in the Twentieth Century*\; *Remaking Reality: U.S. Documentary Culture after 1945*\, co-edited with Joseph Entin and Franny Nudelman\; and *Trauma and Documentary Photography of the FSA*\, co-authored with Eric Rosenberg. She has collaborated with curators at the DIA\, the International Center of Photography\, and the Addison Gallery of American Art\, served as consultant to a range of photographic projects and exhibitions\, and curated exhibitions at U-M’s Institute for the Humanities and the Middlebury Art Museum. DESCRIPTION:Ariana\n\nTitle: Unbalanced Expectations? Examining Graduate Students of Color’s Mentorship Expectations for Faculty of Color vs. White Faculty\n\nAbstract:\nAccording to previous work\, faculty of color report that students of color expect them to provide greater support and understanding of their concerns given their shared identities\, compared to White faculty. My work examines these possible unbalanced expectations from the graduate students’ perspective. First\, in a qualitative study\, I examine which types of mentorship expectations are most important to graduate students (e.g.\, research\, professional\, socioemotional support\, respect). In a second\, correlational study I investigate whether graduate students of color report higher mentorship expectations for faculty advisors of color than White faculty advisors. Furthermore\, this study examines whether these unbalanced expectations could be explained by the student’s perception that an advisor of color is more understanding of their situation and specific needs as a person of color in academia (i.e.\, perceived race-based empathy). \n\nDesiree\n\nTitle: Assessing Perceptions of Leaders Who Use Anger in the Workplace: An Intersectional Approach\n\nAbstract: \nIn 2019\, Women in the Workplace (the largest study of the state of women in cooperate America) reported that for every 100 entry-level men that are promoted to managerial positions\, only 58 Black women are promoted. Why might this be the case? Standards for men in the workplace are very different than standards for women in the workplace. Past research demonstrates that women leaders who use anger in the workplace are penalized more than men leaders who use anger in the workplace. This might be because women are stereotyped and expected to show emotions like happiness\, fear\, and sympathy. Concurrently\, men are stereotyped and believed to express emotions like anger and pride. Further\, women leaders who demonstrate stereotype inconsistent behaviors are penalized professionally. What’s interesting however\, is when we intersect gender and race\, differing stereotypes about women and emotionality emerge. The Angry Black Woman (ABW) stereotypes characterizes Black women as being angry aggressive\, unfeminine\, and attitudinal. The intersection of race with gender presents a stereotype that directly contrasts stereotypes and beliefs about women’s emotions overall. If being angry is stereotype consistent with Black women\, as it is with men\, then we might expect Black women leaders to not be penalized for expressing anger in the workplace\, as are men. In our work\, we asked whether professional evaluations of leaders who use anger in the workplace depend on (1) the gender of the evaluator\, (2) the gender of the leader\, and/or (3) the race of the leader. White participants (N = 183) read a fake transcript in which a leader describes an interaction with an employee. In the interaction\, the leader expressed anger or sympathy. The researchers manipulated the race and gender of the leader. Participants made professional evaluations of the leader. Overall\, white men and white women participants rated White leaders similarly professionally regardless of the emotion expressed. However\, for Black leaders\, White women rated Black women leaders higher professionally than Black men leaders regardless of the emotion expressed. Additionally\, White men rated Black men leaders higher professionally than Black women leaders regardless of the emotion expressed. These findings suggest that the perceiver gender impacts impression formation/maintenance of leaders in the workplace.

SUMMARY:Presentation:A Data Orientation to Immigrants Admitted to the United States\, Federal Fiscal Years 1972-2000
DESCRIPTION:This past September\, we had the opportunity to learn how these recently-released data arrived to ICPSR. Now it is time for an introduction to the data collection itself! Principal Investigator Sherrie Kossoudji will describe these data (Immigrants Admitted to the United States\, Federal Fiscal Years 1972-2000)\, which include every single person admitted as an immigrant 1972-2000\, and give insights into the types of analyses that might be undertaken. Could you be the first to publish using these data?\n\nDr. Sherrie A. Kossoudji is presently an associate professor in the School of Social Work and an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Economics. Her principal research area is immigration. She has written numerous articles on the legal status of immigrant workers in the United States and the incentives to cross the border illegally. Much of her work attempts to discern the link between legal status in the United States and economic outcomes. She has written on wealth disparities for immigrants--in particular\, on homeownership as assets for immigrants. Her latest immigration work focuses on new immigrant children to the United States\, particularly adopted orphans from abroad\, and on the economic incentives and consequences of citizenship for immigrants to the United States. Recently\, she has examined markets for body parts around the world. In particular\, markets for sperm and ova are useful to identify social constructions of desirability and the price associated with them. She has also written on numerous labor and wealth issues and gendered outcomes. Much of her work focuses on gendered differences in economic outcomes for those at the margins of society. Dr. Kossoudji speaks publicly around the world about immigration\, citizenship\, and life sciences and reproduction.\n\nDid you miss the story of the curation of these data? SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Research Universities and the Public Good in the Time of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:ISR Insights Speaker Series is a series focusing on the research happening at ISR.\n\nJason Owen-Smith (Executive Director\, Institute for Research on Innovation & Science (IRIS)\; Executive Director\, Research Analytics\; Professor of Sociology\, University of Michigan\; Research Professor\, Institute for Social Research)\n\nWednesday\, December 2 at 2pm EST: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91211224326\n\nAmerica's most research intensive universities represent about 3% of higher education institutions\, but they conduct 90% of the nation's academic research. Drawing on his recent book\, Research Universities and the Public Good: Discovery for an Uncertain Future and the work of ISR's Institute for Research on Innovation & Science (IRIS)\, which he directs\, Jason Owen-Smith will explain how these unique and essential organizations serve as an important form of \"social insurance\" in the face of an uncertain future. Universities like U of M are uniquely able to address \"unknown unknowns\,\" problems and opportunities we do not know we have yet. No other sector or type of organization accomplishes is equipped to serve this purpose in our society. COVID-19 puts special pressures on the academic research mission that come after more than a decade of declining public support. The pandemic and its effects jeopardize the US Academic Research Enterprise (US-ARE) and with it the future health\, wealth\, and well-being of our nation and the world. Drawing on unique data science resources developed at IRIS\, and 20 years of work on the economic and social value of research and innovation\, Owen-Smith highlights the challenges and explains how they might be addressed by federal and state policy-makers\, the leaders and faculty of institutions like ours.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCAIM Colloquium | Passive Imaging and Communication
DESCRIPTION:In this talk we consider the propagation of waves transmitted by ambient noise sources. We discuss a generalized Helmholtz-Kirchhoff identity that derives from Green's identity and Sommerfeld radiation condition. The inspection of this identity makes it possible to design passive imaging methods\, i.e.\, imaging methods using only passive receiver arrays and ambient noise illumination. More surprisingly\, it is also possible to design an original passive communication scheme between two passive arrays that uses only ambient noise illumination. The passive transmitter array does not transmit anything but it is a tunable meta-material surface that can modulate its scattering properties and encode a message in the modulation.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:MIPSE Seminar | Exploring Transformative Startup Solutions for Magnetically Confined Fusion Plasmas
DESCRIPTION:The seminar is free and open to the public.\nTo request the Zoom link\, please send an email to:\nmipse-central@umich.edu\n\nAbstract:\nThe potential to use fusion as a carbon-free\, fuel-abundant energy source to meet the world’s growing energy demands has motivated significant US and international research. One research path to realize fusion energy involves tokamaks that magnetically confine hot plasmas in the shape of a torus. Almost every tokamak fusion reactor in the world relies on magnetic induction from a central solenoid to drive the current necessary to create a fusion grade plasma. Minimizing or eliminating the need for a central solenoid in a tokamak would greatly simplify the construction and reduce the cost of these devices\, increasing their viability for commercial energy production. Solenoid-free startup techniques such as helicity injection (HI) and radiofrequency (RF) wave injection offer the potential of reducing the technical requirements of\, or possibly the need for\, a central solenoid. A major upgrade is underway for the spherical tokamak\, Pegasus-III at the U of Wisconsin. The new facility will be a dedicated US platform to study innovations in plasma startup techniques\, allowing for studies of both HI and RF during plasma initiation\, ramp-up and sustainment. Experimental plans for RF heating and current drive in the microwave regime will be presented. The new capabilities of Pegasus-III will provide a bold test of the viability of a non-solenoidal compact tokamak using reactor relevant techniques.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nProf. Diem’s research interests are in experimental plasma physics for fusion energy development with emphasis on validating numerical models with experimental data. She focuses on utilizing radio frequency (RF) waves to heat and drive current in magnetically confined plasmas. Prof. Diem’s current research is focused on electron Bernstein wave and electron cyclotron heating and current drive experiments on Pegasus-III at UW-Madison as well as collaborations domestically and internationally on RF injection in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. Prof. Diem received her PhD in Plasma Physics from Princeton U. where she developed diagnostics to study electron Bernstein wave emission and mode conversion on the National Spherical Tokamak at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab. She received a BS in Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics from UW-Madison. Prior to joining the faculty at UW-Madison\, Prof. Diem was a Research and Development Staff Scientist in the Fusion Energy Division at Oak Ridge National Lab. and was on long-term assignment at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility at General Atomics in San Diego\, CA.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:DCMB / CCMB Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: The brain is made of networks of neurons that send information to each other via spikes. Sleep and wake are the most clearly definable brain states and each exerts unique effects upon neural network spiking activity. We used large-scale recordings in the frontal cortex of mice and rats to examine the activity of neurons during wake/sleep cycles and found that a novel form of homeostatic action is taken by sleep: homogenization of firing rates. Whereas it was previously believed that sleep simple decreased firing rates\, we found that this was much more true of the most active neurons only\, thereby reducing the variance of the population. \n\n To extend this observation of homeostatic forced during sleep we also examine how sleep and wake states interact with learning and performance\, which is also facilitated by sleep. We have therefore begun to record before\, during and after learning sessions to determine how learning interacts with the usual homeostatic effects of sleep. Further we can also record how waking changes in brain states such as motivation and attention modulate firing and information processing by neurons during behavior itself.\n\n Finally\, our end-goal to translate these kinds of basic neurobiologic observations in healthy rodents to states of stress or treatments of stress. Unfortunately the chronic stress states of relevance to psychiatric disease do not last seconds but days and weeks. We have therefore begun to build new long-term recording environments to enable future experiments over these time-spans.\n\nBIOGRAPHY:\nDr. Watson is an assistant professor in psychiatry at the University of Michigan. He grew up in Ann Arbor and then obtained his BA from Cornell University and his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. During his Ph.D. he used two-photon microscopy to study the behavior of neurons in local cortical microcircuits. During his doctoral work he also participated in technical development of multi-beam two photon imaging techniques. Upon graduation from medical school\, Dr. Watson pursued a residency in Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College as well postdoctoral work at New York University. He received the National Institute for Mental Health’s Outstanding Resident Award\, the American Psychiatric Association’s Lilly Research Fellowship and the Leon Levy Neuroscience Fellowship. He did a fellowship with Dr. Gyorgy Buzsaki at NYU to record ongoing activity in naturally behaving and sleeping animals wherein he showed that sleep reorganizes neuronal firing architecture in the neocortex in previously unknown ways. He is now combining his electrical recordings with behavioral tools to deepen his understanding of both use and regulation of cortical brain circuits. \n\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Near Term to Net Zero: A New Approach to Setting Carbon Prices
DESCRIPTION:Join Citizens' Climate Lobby for a presentation on a new method for determining the carbon price needed to achieve net zero CO2 emissions.\n\nEconomists widely agree that putting a price on fossil fuels is the most effective tool for reducing carbon emissions. But what level of carbon price is needed to reduce carbon emissions fast enough to prevent catastrophic climate change?\n\nProf. Alexander R. Barron will present a new method he and colleagues have developed to calculate the necessary carbon price. Their work was recently published in the paper \"A near-term to net zero alternative to the social cost of carbon for setting carbon prices\,\" N. Kaufman\, A. Barron\, W. Krawczyk\, P. Marsters and H. McJeon\, Nature Climate Change. As the authors have written\,\n\n\"This approach enables policymakers to use both climate science and economics to chart an effective\, efficient pathway to net-zero emissions.\"\n\nDr. Barron is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Policy at Smith College. Before joining Smith\, he worked in Congress to design comprehensive climate legislation (including the American Clean Energy and Security Act)\, and covered international climate negotiations. He also worked in the Office of Policy at the EPA\, where he advised senior EPA leadership and worked on standards to reduce carbon pollution (e.g.\, the Clean Power Plan)\, cross-state air pollution\, and mercury and other toxics. He also helped guide EPA’s work on environmental economics and climate adaptation.\n\nThe presentation will be followed by time for discussion.\n\nPlease register using the Eventbrite Registration link. Zoom connection instructions will be sent via email prior to the event.\n\nSponsored by the Ann Arbor and University of Michigan chapters of Citizens' Climate Lobby.
