SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self\"
DESCRIPTION:In *Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self*\, Detroit artist Sydney G. James brings to the forefront and celebrates the work of Black women. The USPS worker\, the artist\, the event-planning Zoom mom—the paintings in this exhibition reposition the narrative of black women’s visibility and value. Each portrait honors the individual and collective contributions and labors of Black women\, persistent through the pandemics\, through police violence\, and whether seen or unseen.\n\nWith the Gallery closed to the public due to COVID\, *Watch Me Work* will be completely visible from the street. Artwork will be hung in the Washington and Thayer-street first floor windows of the Institute for the Humanities\, with two additional pieces visible through the gallery window on Thayer in a public celebration of these meaningful human relationships and connections.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Results or Roses: New and Assorted Works
DESCRIPTION:View the online gallery at https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/humanitiesgalleries/sarah-rose-sharp/\n\nResults or Roses: New and Assorted Works is a virtual exhibition by artist and writer Sarah Rose Sharp and part of the Institute for the Humanities' Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded \"High Stakes Art\" initiative. The exhibition of new and collected fiber-based art incorporates salvaged and found bits of cultural and fiber art that\, as she explains\, \"forms a discourse that is physical rather than textual.\"\n\nThanks to the grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\, we supported Sharp's work on Results and Roses during the summer of 2020\, but due to COVID-19 were forced to postpone the pop-up exhibition also scheduled for summer 2020. This fall we installed Results and Roses as a pop-up exhibition in the Osterman Common Room. Due to building security\, it's not open to the general public\, but we are thrilled to present the work online as a virtual exhibition. \n\nAbout the Artist\nSarah Rose Sharp is a Detroit-based writer\, activist\, photographer\, and multimedia artist. She writes about art and culture for Art in America\, Hyperallergic\, Flash Art\, Sculpture Magazine\, ArtSlant\, and others. Sarah was named a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow for Art Criticism and is a 2018 recipient of the Rabkin Foundation Prize. She is a guest lecturer at several universities in Southeast Michigan and served as a mentor in the NYFA Immigrant Artist Mentorship Program in 2018. SUMMARY:Film Screening:John Lewis: Good Trouble (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:REDEMPTIONS ARE SOLD OUT! For those who purchased before 12/15\, you will have access to view the film until 12/31/20.\n\nSynopsis:\nAn intimate account of legendary U.S. Representative John Lewis’ life\, legacy and more than 60 years of extraordinary activism — from the bold teenager on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement to the legislative powerhouse he was throughout his career. After Lewis petitioned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to help integrate a segregated school in his hometown of Troy\, Alabama\, King sent “the boy from Troy” a round trip bus ticket to meet with him. From that meeting onward\, Lewis became one of King’s closest allies. He organized Freedom Rides that left him bloodied or jailed\, and stood at the front lines in the historic marches on Washington and Selma. He never lost the spirit of the “boy from Troy” and called on his fellow Americans to get into “good trouble” until his passing on July 17\, 2020.\n\n96 Minutes.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:In-Between the World and Dreams
DESCRIPTION:In this multi-venue project led by the Institute for the Humanities\, in collaboration with the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the U-M Museum of Art\, with funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\, Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama explores global exchange\, commerce and the troubling histories of colonialism and slavery in the Western world. \n\nMahama's artistic practice illustrates\, as he explains\, how art education\, art and cultural opportunities \"allow for people to find new ways to acquire knowledge\, not only of themselves\, but their histories and the places and spaces in which they find themselves.\"\n\nEnveloping the contours of a museum building or wall\, the blankets of jute fibers are meant to contrast with the monumentality of the institutional buildings and spaces they cover\, becoming remnants and traces that reference the hands of laborers\, the imprints of colonialism and the interference of Britain and the U.S. in Ghanaian history.\n\nThe project marks the first outdoor exhibition of Mahama's work in the United States. It is responsive to the present moment\, offering students and the broader community the opportunity to engage with the arts in a public space at a time when gatherings inside buildings and museums are limited.\n\nCurator's Statement:\n\nGhanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama’s installations are cumulative moments of reckoning\, mending\, and recycling. Things fall apart\, come undone. His constructions defy any notions of permanence and longevity. They are monuments to the in-between and the upending\, begging the question\, “What can we do?”\n\nMahama incorporates jute sacks—synonymous with the trade markets of Ghana where he lives and works—as a raw material. He works collaboratively with his community to complete the extensive sewing of the sacks required in preparation for his projects. For the U-M installations\, he incorporates materials from his previous seminal works over the last decade as a retrospective.\n\nThe markings\, stitching\, and signs of wear on the jute remind us of the many changing hands and endless labor behind international trade—the human toll of capitalism\, commodification\, and globalization. The fabric itself acts as metaphor for Ghana’s complicated history defined by Dutch colonialism and the Gold Coast slave trade\, British rule till 1957\, and a future de-railed by military coups post-independence.\n\nRather than grand gestures\, Mahama’s installations are humble acts of endurance. They are covert art take-overs\, subverting architecture and disrupting the pristine fascia of our institutional buildings. They hold us accountable for past trespasses. \n\nMahama is committed to offering his own country the same cultural opportunities and experiences available to those in the West. Most recently he designed and opened the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Arts in his hometown of Tamale Ghana\, contributing towards the expansion of his country’s contemporary art scene. An extension of his art practice\, the centre brings Mahama’s many visionary sketches to life\, creating classrooms in old airplanes\, a swimming pool for children’s play\, and public spaces for gatherings and the exchange of ideas.\n\nIn this pivotal year defined by Covid-19\, worldwide protests in support of Black Lives Matter\, climate change\, and our U.S. Presidential election in the balance\, Ibrahim Mahama’s work acknowledges failures and false promises\, but also the opportunities that can reveal themselves in times of crisis. \n\nPerhaps generations emerging from crisis can learn from the ghosts of the past and generate entirely new systems\, not motivated by profit or self-interest\, but by a deep commitment to the hard work ahead\, our willingness to do it\, and to the mutual space for dreams.\n\n–Amanda Krugliak\, arts curator\, Institute for the Humanities and curator of In Between the World and Dreams \n\nIn-Between the World and Dreams is a multi-venue project led by the U-M Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, in partnership with UMMA and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History\, Detroit. \n\nIn-Between the World and Dreams is made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Raqs Media Collective in Conversation with Gunalan Nadarajan
DESCRIPTION:Raqs Media Collective in Conversation with Gunalan Nadarajan\, Dean\, Stamps School of Art & Design\nCo-presented with Expo Chicago\n\nDecember 3\, 2020 - 11am EST/10am CST/ 7.30pm IST\n\nFollowing the world premiere of two new videos commissioned by Stamps Gallery\, twentyfourbyseven*(6 mins \, video\, calligraphy\, text\, animation)\, 2020 and Why do they call the answer to a question\, a solution?*(12 mins\, video\, spoken word)\, 2020\, Raqs Media Collective reflect on the process of creating The Pandemic Circle after the predicament of quarantine and seclusion caused by the Covid-19 pandemic gripped contemporary life across the globe. The Pandemic Circle includes 31 Days(18 minutes\, video\, calligraphy\, text)\, 2020\, the first video in the series that was released in the summer of 2020. \n\nThe renowned collective will be in conversation with Gunalan Nadarajan\, curator and Dean of Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.\n\nDescription of NEW Films in the Pandemic Circle  \n\ntwentyfourbyseven(6 mins \, video\, calligraphy\, text\, animation)\, 2020\n\nWalking a tightrope between knowing and feeling in elongated pandemic days and nights. There is an awareness of the awareness of how the nervous system responds to the nervousness of this time. There is now the out-of-body sensation of looking back on each moment as it passes\, twentyfourbyseven.\n\nWhy do they call the answer to a question\, a solution?(12 mins\, video\, spoken word)\, 2020\n\nThe third video in this Pandemic Circle turns into an enquiry into the very form of thinking. It moves between lesions\, joys\, epiphanies\, and terror. The image and voice rewire spaces left unattended by various 20th century impasses. The film reflects on exhaustion and inventiveness\, love and dignity\, deep pasts and faint futures\, and the ruptures that modulate the share of “overcoming” and “overturning” in our individual selves\, and collective life. The video enters troubled waters to search for news way to look at horizons.\n\nFor more information\, please contact:\nJennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Outreach & Public engagement Coordinator\, Stamps Gallery\nKate Sierzputowski\, Strategic Initiatives & Programming Coordinator\, Expo Chicago\n\n  \n\nPlease RSVP to reserve your place for this free event: https://program.expochicago.com

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: Astrid D. Haase\, M.D.\, Ph.D.\, National Institutes of Health
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAkin to an adaptive immune system\, PIWI-interacting small RNAs (piRNAs) protect the integrity of germline genomes by silencing mobile genetic elements (transposons). Precision of piRNA silencing is essential for the survival of a species\, and target-recognition by complementary base-pairing places the sequences of piRNAs at its center. How piRNAs are controlled to ensure silencing of all transposons while avoiding mistargeting of essential host genes remains an outstanding question in reproductive biology. This seminar presentation will explore mechanisms of piRNA biogenesis to understand how specificity of piRNA silencing is regulated and adjusted to gain control over novel genomic invaders.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nAstrid Haase received an M.D. from the University of Vienna (Austria) in 2002 and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Basel (Switzerland) in 2007. Haase became interested in small non-coding RNAs during her graduate work with Prof. Witek Filipowicz at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel\, and continued exploring mechanisms of RNA silencing as a postdoc with Prof. Greg Hannon at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. She began her independent research group as a Stadtman Tenure-Track Investigator at the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in 2015.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SEMINAR: \"Large-scale Inference of Time-varying Markov Random Fields: Bridging the Gap Between Statistical and Computational Efficiencies\" — Salar Fattahi
DESCRIPTION:The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nThis event will be a joint seminar with the MICDE.\n\nTitle:\nLarge-scale Inference of Time-varying Markov Random Fields: Bridging the Gap Between Statistical and Computational Efficiencies\n\nAbstract:\nContemporary systems are comprised of a massive number of interconnected components that interact according to a hierarchy of complex\, dynamic\, and unknown topologies. For example\, with billions of neurons and hundreds of thousands of voxels\, the human brain is considered as one of the most complex physiological networks\, whose structure remains as a long-standing mystery. As another example\, the emergence of self-driving cars has only accentuated the need for the development of real-time and reliable methods for detecting moving objects\, whose temporal locations are captured through a dynamically-evolving 3D network. Nonetheless\, the vast amounts of parameters to be estimated\, caused both by the large number of components and the time-varying nature of the systems\, are currently the major bottlenecks in our ability to successfully solve such inference problems. \n\nThe temporal behavior of today's interconnected systems can be captured via time-varying Markov random fields (MRF). A popular approach to achieve this goal is based on the so-called maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE): to find a probabilistic graphical model\, based on which the observed data is most probable to occur. The MLE-based methods suffer from several fundamental drawbacks which render them impractical in realistic settings. First\, they often suffer from notoriously high computational cost in the massive problems\, where the number of variables to be inferred is in the order of millions\, or more. Second\, they fail to efficiently incorporate prior structural information into their estimation procedure. With the goal of bridging this knowledge gap\, the aim of this work is to revisit the standard MLE as the “Holy Grail” of the inference methods for graphical models\, and precisely pinpoint and remedy the scenarios where it fails. A recurring theme in our proposed approach is a class of efficiently-solvable mixed-integer optimization problems that is used in lieu of the regularized MLE for the inference of time-varying MRFs. Our proposed optimization problems enjoy strong statistical and computational guarantees\, while being amenable to a wide class of graphical models with different side information\, such as sparsity\, smoothness\, etc.\n\nBio:\nSalar Fattahi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from UC Berkeley. He received a M.S. degree from Columbia University\, and a B.S. degree from Sharif University of Technology\, Iran\, both in Electrical Engineering. Salar’s research lies at the intersection of optimization\, data analytics\, and control theory. He was the recipient of several awards\, including the 2020 INFORMS ENRE Best Student Paper Award\, 2018 INFORMS Data Mining Best Paper Award and 2020 Power & Energy Society General Meeting Best-of-the-Best Paper Award. He was also a finalist for the 2018 American Control Conference Best Paper Award.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Collection and Analysis of Driving Videos based on Traffic Participants
DESCRIPTION:Autonomous vehicle (AV) prototypes have been deployed in increasingly varied environments in recent years. An AV must be able to reliably detect and predict the future motion of traffic participants to maintain safe operation based on data collected from high-quality onboard sensors. Sensors such as camera and LiDAR generate high-bandwidth data that requires substantial computational and memory resources. To address these AV challenges\, this thesis investigates three related problems: 1) What will the observed traffic participants do? 2) Is an anomalous traffic event likely to happen in near future? and 3) How should we collect fleet-wide high-bandwidth data based on 1) and 2) over the long-term? \n\nThe first problem is addressed with future traffic trajectory and pedestrian behavior prediction. We propose a future object localization (FOL) method for trajectory prediction in first person videos (FPV). FOL encodes heterogeneous observations including bounding boxes\, optical flow features and ego camera motions with multi-stream recurrent neural networks (RNN) to predict future trajectories. We then introduce BiTraP\, a goal-conditioned bidirectional multi-modal trajectory prediction method. BiTraP estimates multi-modal trajectories and uses novel bi-directional decoder and loss to improve longer-term trajectory prediction accuracy. We show that different choices of non-parametric versus parametric target models directly influence predicted multi-modal trajectory distributions. Experiments with two FPV and six bird's-eye view (BEV) datasets show the effectiveness of our methods compared to state-of-the-art. We define pedestrian behavior prediction as a combination of action and intent. We hypothesize that current and future actions are strong intent priors and propose a multi-task leaning RNN encoder-decoder network to detect and predict future pedestrian actions and street crossing intent. Experimental results show that one task helps the other so they together achieve state-of-the-art performance on published datasets.\n\nTo identify likely traffic anomaly events\, we propose to predict locations of traffic participants over a near-term future horizon and monitor accuracy and consistency of these predictions as evidence of an anomaly. Inconsistent predictions tend to indicate an anomaly has or is about to occur. A supervised video action recognition method can then be applied to classify detected anomalies. We introduce a spatial-temporal area under curve (STAUC) metric as a supplement to the existing area under curve (AUC) evaluation and show it captures how well a model detects both temporal and spatial locations of anomalous events. Experimental results show the proposed method and consistency-based anomaly score are more robust to moving cameras than image generation based methods\; our method achieves state-of-the-art performance over AUC and STAUC metrics. \n\nVideo anomaly detection (VAD) and action recognition support event-of-interest (EOI) distinction from normal driving data. We introduce a Smart Black Box (SBB)\, an intelligent event data recorder\, to prioritize EOI data in long-term driving. The SBB compresses high-bandwidth data based on EOI potential and on-board storage limits. The SBB is designed to prioritize newer and anomalous driving data and discard older and normal data. An optimal compression factor is selected based on the trade-off between data value and storage cost.Experiments in a traffic simulator and with real-world datasets show the efficiency and effectiveness of using a SBB to collect high-quality videos in long-term driving.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:History of Color Printing
DESCRIPTION:Our lives are lived mainly on screen now. Many of us spend upwards of 10 hours a day staring at fields of RGB pixels that look like hand-held versions of giant\, flat cornfields. Hours and hours of driving through flat\, monotonous\, tall\, green corn stalks is not that different from hours and hours of Zoom meetings.\n\nArtist Clifton Meador presents some of the history of color printing — since media archeology is a useful way of reframing current technology — and offers some practical approaches to making color for hand printmaking processes\, such as risography.\n\nOf course\, the irony of delivering this content via the screen is acute\, but Meador also offers participants a PDF of a booklet that delivers similar content.
