Mellon Foundation, we supported Sharp's work on Results and Roses during the summer of 2020, but due to COVID-19 were forced to postpone the pop-up exhibition also scheduled for summer 2020. This fall we installed Results and Roses as a pop-up exhibition in the Osterman Common Room. Due to building security, it's not open to the general public, but we are thrilled to present the work online as a virtual exhibition. \r\n\r\nAbout the Artist\r\nSarah Rose Sharp is a Detroit-based writer, activist, photographer, and multimedia artist. She writes about art and culture for Art in America, Hyperallergic, Flash Art, Sculpture Magazine, ArtSlant, and others. Sarah was named a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow for Art Criticism and is a 2018 recipient of the Rabkin Foundation Prize. She is a guest lecturer at several universities in Southeast Michigan and served as a mentor in the NYFA Immigrant Artist Mentorship Program in 2018. Sarah has served as guest curator and juror for institutions including Penn State University (State College, PA), Scarab Club (Detroit, MI), The Terhune Gallery (Toledo, OH), and The Ann Arbor Art Center (Ann Arbor, MI). Sarah has shown her own work in New York, Seattle, Columbus & Toledo, OH, Covington, KY, and Detroit\u2014including at the Detroit Institute of Arts\u2014with solo shows at Simone De Sousa Gallery and Public Pool. It is responsive to the present moment, offering students and the broader community the opportunity to engage with the arts in a public space at a time when gatherings inside buildings and museums are limited.\r\n\r\nCurator's Statement:\r\n\r\nGhanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama\u2019s installations are cumulative moments of reckoning, mending, and recycling. Things fall apart, come undone. His constructions defy any notions of permanence and longevity. They are monuments to the in-between and the upending, begging the question, \u201cWhat can we do?\u201d\r\n\r\nMahama incorporates jute sacks\u2014synonymous with the trade markets of Ghana where he lives and works\u2014as a raw material. He works collaboratively with his community to complete the extensive sewing of the sacks required in preparation for his projects. For the U-M installations, he incorporates materials from his previous seminal works over the last decade as a retrospective.\r\n\r\nThe markings, stitching, and signs of wear on the jute remind us of the many changing hands and endless labor behind international trade\u2014the human toll of capitalism, commodification, and globalization. The fabric itself acts as metaphor for Ghana\u2019s complicated history defined by Dutch colonialism and the Gold Coast slave trade, British rule till 1957, and a future de-railed by military coups post-independence.\r\n\r\nRather than grand gestures, Mahama\u2019s installations are humble acts of endurance. They are covert art take-overs, subverting architecture and disrupting the pristine fascia of our institutional buildings. They hold us accountable for past trespasses. \r\n\r\nMahama is committed to offering his own country the same cultural opportunities and experiences available to those in the West. Most recently he designed and opened the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Arts in his hometown of Tamale Ghana, contributing towards the expansion of his country\u2019s contemporary art scene. For example, with billions of neurons and hundreds of thousands of voxels, the human brain is considered as one of the most complex physiological networks, whose structure remains as a long-standing mystery. As another example, the emergence of self-driving cars has only accentuated the need for the development of real-time and reliable methods for detecting moving objects, whose temporal locations are captured through a dynamically-evolving 3D network. Nonetheless, the vast amounts of parameters to be estimated, caused both by the large number of components and the time-varying nature of the systems, are currently the major bottlenecks in our ability to successfully solve such inference problems. \r\n\r\nThe temporal behavior of today's interconnected systems can be captured via time-varying Markov random fields (MRF). A popular approach to achieve this goal is based on the so-called maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE): to find a probabilistic graphical model, based on which the observed data is most probable to occur. The MLE-based methods suffer from several fundamental drawbacks which render them impractical in realistic settings. First, they often suffer from notoriously high computational cost in the massive problems, where the number of variables to be inferred is in the order of millions, or more. Second, they fail to efficiently incorporate prior structural information into their estimation procedure. With the goal of bridging this knowledge gap, the aim of this work is to revisit the standard MLE as the \u201cHoly Grail\u201d of the inference methods for graphical models, and precisely pinpoint and remedy the scenarios where it fails. A recurring theme in our proposed approach is a class of efficiently-solvable mixed-integer optimization problems that is used in lieu of the regularized MLE for the inference of time-varying MRFs. Our proposed optimization problems enjoy strong statistical and computational guarantees, while being amenable to a wide class of graphical models with different side information, such as sparsity, smoothness, etc.\r\n\r\nBio:\r\nSalar Fattahi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from UC Berkeley. He received a M.S. degree from Columbia University, and a B.S. degree from Sharif University of Technology, Iran, both in Electrical Engineering. Salar\u2019s research lies at the intersection of optimization, data analytics, and control theory. An AV must be able to reliably detect and predict the future motion of traffic participants to maintain safe operation based on data collected from high-quality onboard sensors. Sensors such as camera and LiDAR generate high-bandwidth data that requires substantial computational and memory resources. To address these AV challenges, this thesis investigates three related problems: 1) What will the observed traffic participants do? 2) Is an anomalous traffic event likely to happen in near future? and 3) How should we collect fleet-wide high-bandwidth data based on 1) and 2) over the long-term? \r\n\r\nThe first problem is addressed with future traffic trajectory and pedestrian behavior prediction.We propose a future object localization (FOL) method for trajectory prediction in first person videos (FPV). FOL encodes heterogeneous observations including bounding boxes, optical flow features and ego camera motions with multi-stream recurrent neural networks (RNN) to predict future trajectories. We then introduce BiTraP, a goal-conditioned bidirectional multi-modal trajectory prediction method. BiTraP estimates multi-modal trajectories and uses novel bi-directional decoder and loss to improve longer-term trajectory prediction accuracy. We show that different choices of non-parametric versus parametric target models directly influence predicted multi-modal trajectory distributions. Experiments with two FPV and six bird's-eye view (BEV) datasets show the effectiveness of our methods compared to state-of-the-art. We define pedestrian behavior prediction as a combination of action and intent. We hypothesize that current and future actions are strong intent priors and propose a multi-task leaning RNN encoder-decoder network to detect and predict future pedestrian actions and street crossing intent. Experimental results show that one task helps the other so they together achieve state-of-the-art performance on published datasets.\r\n\r\nTo identify likely traffic anomaly events, we propose to predict locations of traffic participants over a near-term future horizon and monitor accuracy and consistency of these predictions as evidence of an anomaly. Inconsistent predictions tend to indicate an anomaly has or is about to occur. A supervised video action recognition method can then be applied to classify detected anomalies. We introduce a spatial-temporal area under curve (STAUC) metric as a supplement to the existing area under curve (AUC) evaluation and show it captures how well a model detects both temporal and spatial locations of anomalous events. Experimental results show the proposed method and consistency-based anomaly score are more robust to moving cameras than image generation based methods; our method achieves state-of-the-art performance over AUC and STAUC metrics. \r\n\r\nVideo anomaly detection (VAD) and action recognition support event-of-interest (EOI) distinction from normal driving data. We introduce a Smart Black Box (SBB), an intelligent event data recorder, to prioritize EOI data in long-term driving. The SBB compresses high-bandwidth data based on EOI potential and on-board storage limits. The SBB is designed to prioritize newer and anomalous driving data and discard older and normal data.
