DESCRIPTION:In *Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self*\, Detroit artist Sydney G. James brings to the forefront and celebrates the work of Black women. The USPS worker\, the artist\, the event-planning Zoom mom—the paintings in this exhibition reposition the narrative of black women’s visibility and value. Each portrait honors the individual and collective contributions and labors of Black women\, persistent through the pandemics\, through police violence\, and whether seen or unseen.\n\nWith the Gallery closed to the public due to COVID\, *Watch Me Work* will be completely visible from the street. Artwork will be hung in the Washington and Thayer-street first floor windows of the Institute for the Humanities\, with two additional pieces visible through the gallery window on Thayer in a public celebration of these meaningful human relationships and connections.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:View the online gallery at https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/humanitiesgalleries/sarah-rose-sharp/\n\nResults or Roses: New and Assorted Works is a virtual exhibition by artist and writer Sarah Rose Sharp and part of the Institute for the Humanities' Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded \"High Stakes Art\" initiative. The exhibition of new and collected fiber-based art incorporates salvaged and found bits of cultural and fiber art that\, as she explains\, \"forms a discourse that is physical rather than textual.\"\n\nThanks to the grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\, we supported Sharp's work on Results and Roses during the summer of 2020\, but due to COVID-19 were forced to postpone the pop-up exhibition also scheduled for summer 2020. This fall we installed Results and Roses as a pop-up exhibition in the Osterman Common Room. Due to building security\, it's not open to the general public\, but we are thrilled to present the work online as a virtual exhibition. \n\nAbout the Artist\nSarah Rose Sharp is a Detroit-based writer\, activist\, photographer\, and multimedia artist. She writes about art and culture for Art in America\, Hyperallergic\, Flash Art\, Sculpture Magazine\, ArtSlant\, and others. Sarah was named a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow for Art Criticism and is a 2018 recipient of the Rabkin Foundation Prize. She is a guest lecturer at several universities in Southeast Michigan and served as a mentor in the NYFA Immigrant Artist Mentorship Program in 2018. Sarah has served as guest curator and juror for institutions including Penn State University (State College\, PA)\, Scarab Club (Detroit\, MI)\, The Terhune Gallery (Toledo\, OH)\, and The Ann Arbor Art Center (Ann Arbor\, MI). Sarah has shown her own work in New York\, Seattle\, Columbus & Toledo\, OH\, Covington\, KY\, and Detroit—including at the Detroit Institute of Arts—with solo shows at Simone De Sousa Gallery and Public Pool. She is primarily concerned with artist and viewer experiences of making and engaging with art\, and conducts ongoing research into the state of contemporary art in redeveloping cities\, with special focus and regard for Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:University of Michigan students tell us that making friends and finding community are some of the most rewarding aspects of their time on campus but COVID-19 has made these things more challenging to do. You are invited to join the Community Matters Cohort Program which provides a space for students to meet others and participate in regular social events. Program participants will be matched with a small group of other students who are interested in finding community. Walker is the Executive Director of the United States Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy. Following a 26-year career with the State Department\, she retired with the senior rank of Minister Counselor and became a teacher\, writer and researcher. Currently a Faculty Fellow at the USC Center on Public Diplomacy (CPD)\, she has served as the editor of the CPD Perspective series\, an Adjunct Professor at the Central European University’s (CEU) School of Public Policy and a Research Fellow at the CEU Center for Media\, Data and Society.  She has also been a Professor of National Security Strategy at the National War College in Washington\, DC and the National Defense College of the United Arab Emirates. Dr. Walker has published and lectured extensively on the practice of public diplomacy in complex information environments.  She graduated from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and earned her doctorate in English language and literature from the University of Chicago.  \n\nJohn D. Ciorciari is Associate Professor and Director of the Weiser Diplomacy Center and International Policy Center at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy\, University of Michigan. He is the author or editor of several books on international law and politics\, including Sovereignty Sharing in Fragile States (forthcoming with Stanford University Press) and The Courteous Power: Japan and Southeast Asia in the Indo-Pacific Era (forthcoming with the University of Michigan Press). DESCRIPTION:Dr. Judith Fan\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology\, UC San Diego\, will give a talk titled \"Cognitive Tools for Learning and Communication.\"\n\nABSTRACT\n\nHow does the human mind transform a cascade of sensory information into meaningful knowledge? While traditional approaches to learning focus on how people process the data provided to them by the world\, this approach leaves aside all of the powerful tools people have to actively reformat their experiences and generate new ones. For example\, we choose what to look at\, bring certain memories to mind\, produce pictures to share\, and compose stories to tell. The goal of our lab’s research is to “reverse engineer” the core mechanisms by which employing such cognitive tools enable humans to learn and communicate more effectively. Our recent work focuses on visual communication\, one of our most basic and versatile tools\, because it also represents a key challenge for understanding how multiple cognitive systems interact to support complex\, natural behaviors. This talk will highlight our recent progress\, as well as open research questions in this domain.

SUMMARY:Presentation:GENOMIC DATA SHARING: THE PRIVACY RISK AND TECHNICAL MITIGATIONS
DESCRIPTION:Personalized medicine makes use of rich and multi-modality individual health data for the promise of better diagnosis\, improved health\, and a high quality and longer life. The human genome is a key piece in the puzzle. The collection and sharing of personal genomics for research alsobring an increasing concern about privacy\, and the risk of discrimination and stigmatization. There are important ethical\, legal\, and social implications\, for example\, individual genome information is known to be uniquely identifiable\, which is also highly associated with relatives. Trust\, accountability\, and equity are critical pillars to enable responsible data sharing.\n\nIn this talk\, I will overview the genomic privacy risks to show various kinds of vulnerability\, covering linkage attack\, membership attack\, and other inference attacks. Then\, I will introduce some technical mitigation strategies including secure outsourcing\, multiparty computing\, and privacy-preserving output perturbation.  I hope that this talk will contribute to the awareness of our community with respect to the magnitude of the challenge and the necessity to develop effective and practical solutions.\n\nBio:\n\nDr. Jiang is a Christopher Sarofim family professor and center director of Secure Artificial intelligence For hEalthcare (SAFE) in the School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). Before joining UTHealth in 2018\, he was an associate professor with tenure in the Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) at UCSD. He is an associate editor of BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making and serves as an editorial board member of the Journal of American Medical Informatics Association. His expertise is primarily in health data privacy and predictive models in biomedicine based on his Computer Science Ph.D. training from Carnegie Mellon University. He received NIH R00\, R13\, R21\, R01\, U01 grants as PI\, obtained career awards like CPRIT Rising Stars and UT Stars\, and won several best and distinguished paper awards from American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Joint Summits on Translational Science (2012\, 2013\, 2016). He is one of the organizers of the iDASH Genome Privacy competition (2014 – present)\, which was reported by Nature News and GenomeWeb.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Measurements of the Hubble Constant Using Gravitationally Lensed Quasars
DESCRIPTION:Please contact Beth Demkowski\, demkowsk@umich.edu for Zoom link.\n\nThe current discrepancy between early- and late-Universe measurements of the Hubble constant (H0) highlights the need for additional independent and precise probes. Gravitationally lensed quasars can provide one such probe. Quasars are galaxies with an active galactic nuclei (AGN)\, usually a black hole\, whose light output varies over time. We can measure the light output over time from each image of the lensed quasar. The different travel time for the light from each image means that the variations show up at different times for each image. Measuring the time delay between pairs of images and combining it with a model of the lens allows one to infer H0.\n\nOver the past decade a number of improvements in both the data quality and modeling techniques have allowed the measurement of H_0 from time-delays to start to fulfill its promise of being competitive with other traditional methods such as the cosmic distance ladder.\n\nI will present the current state of the H0 measurement from gravitationally lensed quasars and discuss future prospects.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:The Science\, Technology\, Medicine and Society (STeMS) Speaker Series features scholars doing research across the range of STS subject matter. This term:\n\nAre we humans cooperative or warlike\, rational or delusional\, fixed or flexible? These questions have philosophical bite and political stakes. Indeed\, they always have. But recent work in a range of disciplines asks us to go deeper. What if “we humans” are more fiction than fact? If we can’t assume the stability of the human across time and place\, what happens to debates about human nature? Humanistic approaches\, including actor-network theory\, posthuman criticism\, and multispecies ethnographies\, challenge the idea of an autonomous human nature\, while scientific studies of organ development\, neuroendocrinology\, and the microbiome are revealing how much nature there is inside of us. We explore these questions through a braided history of the human and environmental sciences.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Forecasting and Stochastic Programming Models to Address Uncertainty in the Trauma System Configuration Problem
DESCRIPTION:Trauma care services are a vital part of all healthcare-based network as timely accessibility is important for citizens. Trauma care access is even more relevant when unexpected events such as the COVID-19 pandemic overload the capacity of the hospitals. Research literature has highlighted that access to trauma care is not even for all populations\, especially when comparing rural and urban groups. Historically\, the configuration of a trauma system was often not considered as a whole but instead hinged on the designation and verification of individual hospitals as trauma care centers. Recognition of the benefits of an inclusive trauma system has precipitated a more holistic approach. The optimal geographic configuration of trauma care centers is key to maximizing accessibility while promoting the efficient use of resources. This talk focuses on analyzing and forecasting physical trauma sustained from accidents\, in environments both personal and work related\, pertaining to individual injuries and to formulate a stochastic programming model that utilizes recorded injuries as demands to place trauma centers in the most optimal location. The first part of the talk discusses the limitations faced by the existing trauma healthcare infrastructure by forecasting the expected number of people requiring the services of trauma facilities for both rural and urban locations in Texas. Five types of forecasting methods were analyzed to determine the best option to utilize for forecasting for individual data sets. The aim is to identify which forecasting model performs the best for given data sets that can be used to forecast patient demand for a given location and determine the optimal locations for trauma network expansion. The second part of the talk reports on the development of a two-stage stochastic optimization model for geospatial expansion of a trauma network in the state of Texas. The stochastic optimization model recommends the siting of new trauma care centers according to the geographic distribution of the injured population. The model has the potential to benefit both patients and institutions\, by facilitating prompt access and promoting the efficient use of resources.\n\nEduardo Pérez is an Associate Professor in the Ingram School of Engineering at Texas State University. He was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University from 2010 to 2012. He received his PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Texas A&M University in 2010 and his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez\, Puerto Rico in 2004. Dr. Pérez’s research interests are in the use of methodologies and theories in operations research\, systems engineering\, discrete-event simulation\, algorithms and software design\, and decision theory analysis to solve problems in service systems. Some of his research project sponsors include the National Science Foundation (NSF)\, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)\, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Baylor Scott & White Health System\, Adventist Health System\, and the NEC Corporation. Dr. Eduardo Pérez is a member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE)\, the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS)\, and the Society for Computer Simulation International (SCS). He received his Engineering-In-Training (EIT) certification in 2004. DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION REQUIRED: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_fCIiMkveTdq3D9-PKFLm6Q\n\nABSTRACT: The genomic programming of the development of complex organisms appears to have been misunderstood. The human genome contains just ~20\,000 protein-coding genes\, similar in number and with largely orthologous functions as those in other animals\, including simple nematodes with only 1\,000 somatic cells. By contrast\, the extent of non-protein-coding DNA increases with increasing developmental complexity\, reaching 98.8% in humans. Moreover\, it is now clear that the majority of the genome is not junk but is differentially and dynamically transcribed to produce not only mRNAs but also tens if not hundreds of thousands of short and long non-protein-coding RNAs that show specific expression patterns and subcellular locations. Many of these noncoding RNAs have evolved rapidly under positive selection for adaptive radiation\, and many have been shown to have important roles in development\, brain function\, cancer and other diseases. They function at many different levels of gene expression and cell biology\, including translational control\, formation of subcellular (phase-separated) domains\, and guidance of the epigenetic processes and chromatin dynamics that underpin development\, brain function and physiological adaptation\, with plasticity enabled by RNA editing\, RNA modification and retrotransposon mobilization. These discoveries mean that the assumption that combinatorial control by transcription factors and other regulatory proteins is sufficient to account for human ontogeny is incorrect\, as are the circular assumptions about the neutral evolution of the genome. The challenge now is to determine the structure-function relationships of these RNAs and their mechanisms of action\, as well as their place in the decisional hierarchies that control human development\, physiology\, learning and susceptibility to disorders.
