SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self\"
DESCRIPTION:In *Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self*\, Detroit artist Sydney G. James brings to the forefront and celebrates the work of Black women. The USPS worker\, the artist\, the event-planning Zoom mom—the paintings in this exhibition reposition the narrative of black women’s visibility and value. Each portrait honors the individual and collective contributions and labors of Black women\, persistent through the pandemics\, through police violence\, and whether seen or unseen.\n\nWith the Gallery closed to the public due to COVID\, *Watch Me Work* will be completely visible from the street. Artwork will be hung in the Washington and Thayer-street first floor windows of the Institute for the Humanities\, with two additional pieces visible through the gallery window on Thayer in a public celebration of these meaningful human relationships and connections.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Results or Roses: New and Assorted Works
DESCRIPTION:View the online gallery at https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/humanitiesgalleries/sarah-rose-sharp/\n\nResults or Roses: New and Assorted Works is a virtual exhibition by artist and writer Sarah Rose Sharp and part of the Institute for the Humanities' Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded \"High Stakes Art\" initiative. The exhibition of new and collected fiber-based art incorporates salvaged and found bits of cultural and fiber art that\, as she explains\, \"forms a discourse that is physical rather than textual.\"\n\nThanks to the grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\, we supported Sharp's work on Results and Roses during the summer of 2020\, but due to COVID-19 were forced to postpone the pop-up exhibition also scheduled for summer 2020. This fall we installed Results and Roses as a pop-up exhibition in the Osterman Common Room. Due to building security\, it's not open to the general public\, but we are thrilled to present the work online as a virtual exhibition. \n\nAbout the Artist\nSarah Rose Sharp is a Detroit-based writer\, activist\, photographer\, and multimedia artist. She writes about art and culture for Art in America\, Hyperallergic\, Flash Art\, Sculpture Magazine\, ArtSlant\, and others. Sarah was named a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow for Art Criticism and is a 2018 recipient of the Rabkin Foundation Prize. She is a guest lecturer at several universities in Southeast Michigan and served as a mentor in the NYFA Immigrant Artist Mentorship Program in 2018. Sarah has shown her own work in New York\, Seattle\, Columbus & Toledo\, OH\, Covington\, KY\, and Detroit—including at the Detroit Institute of Arts—with solo shows at Simone De Sousa Gallery and Public Pool. She is primarily concerned with artist and viewer experiences of making and engaging with art\, and conducts ongoing research into the state of contemporary art in redeveloping cities\, with special focus and regard for Detroit.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:John Lewis: Good Trouble (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:REDEMPTIONS ARE SOLD OUT! For those who purchased before 12/15\, you will have access to view the film until 12/31/20.\n\nSynopsis:\nAn intimate account of legendary U.S. Representative John Lewis’ life\, legacy and more than 60 years of extraordinary activism — from the bold teenager on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement to the legislative powerhouse he was throughout his career. After Lewis petitioned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to help integrate a segregated school in his hometown of Troy\, Alabama\, King sent “the boy from Troy” a round trip bus ticket to meet with him. From that meeting onward\, Lewis became one of King’s closest allies. He organized Freedom Rides that left him bloodied or jailed\, and stood at the front lines in the historic marches on Washington and Selma. He never lost the spirit of the “boy from Troy” and called on his fellow Americans to get into “good trouble” until his passing on July 17\, 2020.\n\n96 Minutes.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Collaborative Dishonesty: A Meta-Study
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWhereas dishonesty is often a result of collaborative efforts\, it is commonly studied in individual settings. We present the first meta-study on collaborative dishonesty\, reviewing 51\,640 decisions\, made by 3\,264 individuals. Results reveal that people are influenced by their partners’ lies: They lie more (i) in collaborative than in individual settings\, (ii) when their partners lie\, and (iii) in later stages of the interaction.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Women in American Soccer and European Football: Different Roads to Shared Glory on the Field and in Society
DESCRIPTION:The lecture will highlight the opposite paths that women have traversed in the game of Associated Football on both sides of the Atlantic. Whereas the women in North America entered the field that was virtually open for them since men busily covered the playing fields and cultural space of hegemonic team sports of baseball\, football (American and Canadian)\, basketball\, and ice hockey\; their European counterparts were forced to contest what has arguably been the most male- dominated space in European public life throughout much of the 20th century. \nBoth of these roads harbored immense obstacles. Both entailed challenges of their own that these pioneering women had to overcome. However\, spurred by the massively important and popular World Cup tournaments\, the last three decades have led to a rapprochement on both sides of the Atlantic by catapulting women’s soccer onto hitherto unexpected\, maybe even unimaginable\, heights.\n\nOur speaker\, Andrei S. Marcovits is the Karl W. Deutsch Collegiate Professor of Comparative Politics and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan where he has taught for more than 20 years. In addition to being a multiple-award winning teacher\, his many books and articles on a range of topics—from European social democracy\, labor and social movements to German-Jewish relations\; and from comparative sports cultures to dog rescue—have appeared in 15 languages. His two latest books are Women in American Soccer and European Football\; Different Roads to Shared Glory published in 2019\; and The Boundaries of Pluralism\; The World of The University of Michigan’s Jewish Students in 1897-1945\, co-authored with Kenneth Garner and published in 2020.\n\nThis is the fourth of ten lectures to be presented once each month from September 2020 through June\,2021. The next lecture will be held January 12\, 2021. The title is: Stress and Brain Health from Biology to Social Context. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: Encoding of Path Network Structure at the Juncture of Hippocampus and Cortex
DESCRIPTION:The hippocampus and posterior parietal cortex are each known to be key contributors to spatial cognition. Anatomically between these structures lie the subiculum and the retrosplenial cortex\, brain structures whose roles in a distributed system for cognitive mapping are only now being revealed. Our recent projects examining the dynamics of neurons in these regions during performance of navigational tasks reveal conjunctions of multiple spatial relationships consistent with a transformation of spatial cognition to action. However\, we also observe unique forms of tuning to orientation and route locations that signal a larger role in encoding the structural layout of paths within an environment. We therefore speculate that these brain regions together map path network topologies.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Zoom Webinar: \"The People’s Courts Forty Years On - Appraisal and Argument\"
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2020 lecture series will be only available on-line as a Zoom webinar. Registration link below.\n \n The PRC’s post-1978 court bureaucracy is assumed to be the cat’s paw of an all-encompassing and authoritarian system of social control—lacking everything from political independence to the technical competence required to play a robust role in contemporary China’s increasingly complex economic system and contentious civil society. This easy appraisal of the function and performance of the People’s Courts at all levels in contemporary China is not accurate now\, if it ever was\, and ignores concurrent developments in the surrounding political legal system\, including the application of a new generation of substantive and procedural laws and regulations\, the rise of a private bar intent on pushing the boundaries of professional autonomy\, the increased (legal) sophistication and autonomy of PRC judicial officials\, and the expansion of the public law and administrative law spheres. Professor Howson will review what the PRC People’s Courts have become in the civil\, criminal and administrative law spheres over the past 40 years along three distinct lines of inquiry – (technical) competence\, (bureaucratic) autonomy\, and (political) independence\, and make an argument as to how this key institution may shape the future of China’s “Socialist Legality” and the national governance system.\n \n Nicholas Howson is the Pao Li Tsiang Chair Professor of Law at the Michigan Law School. A specialist in Chinese law and legal institutions and developing Chinese jurisprudence\, he is a former partner of the New York based international law firm Paul\, Weiss\, Rifkind\, Wharton & Garrison LLP\, where he was a managing partner of that firm’s Asia Practice based in Beijing. Starting in the late 1970s\, he has spent more than a decade as a student\, scholar\, and practicing lawyer resident in Beijing and Shanghai\, has been active in the Chinese courts and US and international judicial fora as both an advocate and expert witness on Chinese law\, and since the late 1990s has advised the National People’s Congress and PRC ministries on the drafting and amendment of key Reform era statutes and administrative regulations\, including the 1999 PRC Securities Law\, the 2006 PRC Company Law and the 2020 PRC Securities Law.\n\nRegister for this webinar here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0AdD6iNDS6-iXL0BS_AaXw

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Control Allocation of Flexible Aircraft for Load Alleviation
DESCRIPTION:As wing designs aim for higher aerodynamic efficiency\, the underlying aircraft structure becomes more flexible\, requiring additional features to alleviate the loads encountered from gusts and maneuvers. While alleviating loads\, it is desirable to minimize the deviations from the original flight trajectory. \n\nIn this work\, a dynamic control allocation method which exploits redundant control effectors for maneuver and gust load alleviation is proposed for flexible aircraft. The control architecture decouples the two objectives of load alleviation and rigid body trajectory tracking by exploiting the null space between the input and the rigid body output. A reduced-dimensional null space input is established\, which affects the flexible output (but not the rigid body output) when passed through a null space filter to generate incremental control signals. This null space input is determined to maintain the flexible output of the aircraft within specified values\, thereby achieving load alleviation. \n\nA receding horizon approach to generate the trajectory of the null space input is developed based on linear aircraft models. This receding horizon approach then informs a model predictive control-based control allocator function which can be used as an add-on scheme to a nominal controller. Numerical simulations are used to show that the proposed load alleviation system can successfully avoid the violation of load bounds in the presence of both gust disturbances and maneuvers and with minimal effect on the trajectory tracking performance.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PHD SEMINAR: \"Individualized Medical Decision Learning for Chronic Diseases\" — Weiyu Li
DESCRIPTION:This event is designed for U-M IOE PhD students and faculty and is also open to all U-M students\, faculty and staff.\n\nTitle:\nIndividualized Medical Decision Learning for Chronic Diseases\n\nAbstract:\nChronic diseases are the leading causes of death\, and leading drivers of national health care costs in the U.S. Healthcare management for chronic diseases involve many medical decisions such as whether and when to conduct different types of biomarker tests and medical treatments. Optimizing such medical decisions can be a challenging engineering problem for several reasons. First\, the patients’ health states can progress stochastically over time and are typically not directly observable. Second\, the patient heterogeneity in the disease progression and clinical effectiveness are prevalent in many settings. Third\, there are often trade-offs between alternative decisions that must be considered to prevent both adverse health outcomes and potential side effects. In this talk\, I will present a data-driven optimization framework for individualized medical decision learning. I start from descriptive and predictive analytics by fitting machine learning models to the electronic medical record (EMR) data. Then\, I use a model-based reinforcement learning method to find the optimal testing policy for each patient. To address the issue of parameter ambiguity caused by the patient heterogeneity and estimation error\, I propose a new multi-model partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) method to find the best solution when model parameters are only known with uncertainty. Although focused on prostate cancer active surveillance\, this work can be easily applied to other applications in healthcare\, robotics\, and marketing analytics.\n\nBio:\nWeiyu Li is a Ph.D. candidate in Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan. He earned a Master of Science in Statistics from the University of Michigan\, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Tsinghua University\, China. His research focus is on the interdisciplinary study of statistical/machine learning methods and stochastic optimization. Specific applications are in data-driven sequential decision-making in healthcare operations\, including individualized treatment decisions for cardiovascular disease and active surveillance strategies for prostate cancer. Weiyu has an ongoing collaboration with the Movember Foundation and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Neuroimaging Initiative Talk Series: The effect of cannabis use on brain function and neurochemistry
DESCRIPTION:Cannabis (CB) use has been on the rise in recent years\, in part due to the drug’s increased acceptance and shifting status from an illegal to a legal drug in some US states. Cannabis is the most used illicit drug in the United States with the use of synthetic marijuana on the rise. Although there are increases in the use of cannabis\, there is still relatively little known about its impact on the brain. In this talk I will discuss possible effects of chronic cannabis use on young adults focusing on neural activation and neurochemistry. I will also discuss some preliminary work suggesting sex differences and potential relationships to psychological disorders.
