Mellon Foundation, we supported Sharp's work on Results and Roses during the summer of 2020, but due to COVID-19 were forced to postpone the pop-up exhibition also scheduled for summer 2020. This fall we installed Results and Roses as a pop-up exhibition in the Osterman Common Room. Due to building security, it's not open to the general public, but we are thrilled to present the work online as a virtual exhibition. \r\n\r\nAbout the Artist\r\nSarah Rose Sharp is a Detroit-based writer, activist, photographer, and multimedia artist. She writes about art and culture for Art in America, Hyperallergic, Flash Art, Sculpture Magazine, ArtSlant, and others. Sarah was named a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow for Art Criticism and is a 2018 recipient of the Rabkin Foundation Prize. She is a guest lecturer at several universities in Southeast Michigan and served as a mentor in the NYFA Immigrant Artist Mentorship Program in 2018. Sarah has served as guest curator and juror for institutions including Penn State University (State College, PA), Scarab Club (Detroit, MI), The Terhune Gallery (Toledo, OH), and The Ann Arbor Art Center (Ann Arbor, MI). Sarah has shown her own work in New York, Seattle, Columbus & Toledo, OH, Covington, KY, and Detroit\u2014including at the Detroit Institute of Arts\u2014with solo shows at Simone De Sousa Gallery and Public Pool. With the election behind us when this discussion takes place, the panel will focus on how we return to American ideals, heal, and move forward.\r\n\r\nOur panelists:\r\nKevin Deegan-Krause is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Wayne State University. He received his undergraduate degree in Economics from Georgetown University in 1990 and his doctorate in Government from the University of Notre Dame in 2000. He has spent more than two decades studying how political parties compete against one another, and how that competition shapes what happens in a democracy. His latest book is The New Party Challenge: Changing Cycles of Party Birth and Death in Central Europe and Beyond, published by Oxford University Press in 2020.\r\n\r\nVincent Hutchings is the Hanes Walton Jr. Collegiate Professor of Political Science at UM and a Research Professor at the UM Institute for Social Research. He received his Ph.D. in 1997 from the University of California, Los Angeles. His research examines the ways in which political campaigns and the media frame information about racial issues in order to activate and make politically relevant the voters\u2019 sympathies and\/or antipathies for particular racial groups.\r\n\r\nJennifer Silva joined the O\u2019Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University in 2019. Previously, Silva taught sociology at Bucknell University. She was also a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, where she studied the impact of economic insecurity on social connectedness and civic engagement. Silva\u2019s latest book is We\u2019re Still Here: Pain and Politics in the Heart of America (Oxford University Press, 2019). Silva earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in sociology from the University of Virginia. However, culture matters, as illustrated by the dramatic between-nation variation in vulnerability to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this talk, I draw on prior work showing that unlike the West, which values the independence of the self, much of the non-West shares a view of the self as embedded in relationships or interdependent. Of importance, however, interdependence may be realized by using different strategies, depending on social, ecological, and historical conditions. That is, there may be substantial heterogeneity within the non-West. In particular, Latin American cultures are known to be as interdependent as East Asian cultures. However, I will report two new studies that show that Latin American cultures, but not East Asian cultures, use the expression of the self, including the expression of emotions, as the primary means of achieving the valued state of interdependence. First, using an EEG index of self-referential processing, I found that European Americans, but not East Asians, preferentially process self-enhancing information. Second, using behavioral outcomes, I also found that Latin Americans are more similar to European Americans on the dimension of self-enhancement, even though they are demonstrably more interdependent than the latter. It is the culmination of our lifetime of experiences, along with the experiences and lessons handed down from those who raised us. Other ways to say it is our sixth sense or our gut intuition; knowledge that is inside us and that we access on a regular basis but haven\u2019t yet, or maybe don\u2019t yet know how to, put into words. It is the thing that entrepreneurs, leaders, creatives, and everyday people put to use to know what they should do next, because they can imagine it, and they know it is right because it feels right. It\u2019s hard to quantify, but your own personal visionary knowledge can often be accessed by getting our left brain \u2014 what I like to think of as our resume brain \u2014 out of the way, just for a while, so that we can let loose our own unique creative knowing that is tacit knowledge. As we begin to recognize and trust our own tacit knowledge, we can begin to learn how to intentionally access it in order to help us make decisions that allow us to successfully navigate a sometimes uncertain future. Come along with me for a series of Vision Muscle workshops focused on aspects of work and life where easy access to our vision muscle might be particularly helpful. All of the workshops will be using Vision Muscle strategies, with unique subjects for you to explore based on your own experience, vision and expertise. This self-directed experience will allow you to access your own unique knowledge and leave you with skills that will allow you to call up your Vision Muscle on a regular basis.\r\n\r\nUsing visual images and reflective writing, participants will learn how to access their tacit knowledge, or Visioning Muscles, to gain insight into where they are, and where they would like to journey toward in developing their leadership abilities.
