SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self\"
DESCRIPTION:In *Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self*\, Detroit artist Sydney G. James brings to the forefront and celebrates the work of Black women. The USPS worker\, the artist\, the event-planning Zoom mom—the paintings in this exhibition reposition the narrative of black women’s visibility and value. Each portrait honors the individual and collective contributions and labors of Black women\, persistent through the pandemics\, through police violence\, and whether seen or unseen.\n\nWith the Gallery closed to the public due to COVID\, *Watch Me Work* will be completely visible from the street. Artwork will be hung in the Washington and Thayer-street first floor windows of the Institute for the Humanities\, with two additional pieces visible through the gallery window on Thayer in a public celebration of these meaningful human relationships and connections.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:John Lewis: Good Trouble (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:REDEMPTIONS ARE SOLD OUT! For those who purchased before 12/15\, you will have access to view the film until 12/31/20.\n\nSynopsis:\nAn intimate account of legendary U.S. Representative John Lewis’ life\, legacy and more than 60 years of extraordinary activism — from the bold teenager on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement to the legislative powerhouse he was throughout his career. After Lewis petitioned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to help integrate a segregated school in his hometown of Troy\, Alabama\, King sent “the boy from Troy” a round trip bus ticket to meet with him. From that meeting onward\, Lewis became one of King’s closest allies. He organized Freedom Rides that left him bloodied or jailed\, and stood at the front lines in the historic marches on Washington and Selma. He never lost the spirit of the “boy from Troy” and called on his fellow Americans to get into “good trouble” until his passing on July 17\, 2020.\n\n96 Minutes.

SUMMARY:Community Service:Season of Giving: Food Drive for Food Gatherers
DESCRIPTION:The season of giving has once again arrived in Michigan. But this one comes amid a surging pandemic\, an economic downturn\, and a looming deadline for continuation of federal financial relief.\n\nAll of these have created intense need in communities surrounding Michigan Medicine. In response\, the University of Michigan’s academic medical center will launch a third effort to encourage its own team\, and the local community\, to give food and funds to support Food Gatherers.\n\nStarting December 14\, and continuing through the 22nd\, this will include a convenient drive-up drop-off location for food and toiletries\, open to U-M faculty\, staff and students\, and members of the community in a position to give. It's located at Dock 90 of the North Campus Research Complex\, just off Huron Parkway.\n\nDonors may give online via credit card\, or get information about giving by mail or phone\, at http://www.foodgatherers.org/UM.\n\nAlready this year\, donors to Michigan Medicine’s previous two drives have contributed the equivalent of 128\,000 meals for Food Gatherers to distribute to more than 170 agencies that serve people throughout Washtenaw County and beyond. Generous individuals have also given thousands of pounds of personal care items\, from diapers to toothbrushes.\n\nThe donation drive started in March\, as part of Michigan Medicine’s effort to gather much-needed personal protective equipment during the early days of the pandemic when normal supply chains were disrupted.\n\nSince that time\, Food Gatherers’ partners have experienced a consistent surge in demand from people affected by the economic effects of the pandemic. Uncertainty over the future of federal and state relief efforts is making planning difficult.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PhD Defense: Sabrina Lynch
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: This event will be held via Zoom. The link will be provided below.\n\nZoom link: https://umich-health.zoom.us/j/94668154127\n\nThrombosis is a process whereby a blood clot forms in situ within a vessel and impedes flow. Although necessary to maintain hemostasis\, the human thrombotic system often becomes unstable leading to scenarios of thrombosis and subsequent diseases such as myocardial infarction\, stroke\, pulmonary embolism\, and deep vein thrombosis. Computational modeling is a powerful tool to understand the complexity of thrombosis initiation and provides both temporal and spatial resolution that cannot be obtained in vivo. The goal of this investigation is to develop a computational model of thrombosis initiation in patient-specific models that includes both a complex description of the hemodynamics and biochemistry of thrombin formation. We argue that the complex hemodynamics occurring in vivo significantly alter the initiation and progression of thrombosis.\n\n \n\nWhile blood viscosity is known to exhibit nonlinear behavior\, a Newtonian assumption is often employed in computational analyses. This assumption is valid in healthy arteries where shear rates are high and recirculation is low. However\, in pathological geometries\, such as aneurysms\, and venous geometries\, this assumption fails\, and nonlinear viscous effects become exceedingly important. Previous computational models of thrombosis have investigated coagulation through chemistry based formulations focusing on protein dynamics but have generally excluded complex 3D hemodynamics.\n\n \n\nA computational framework was developed to investigate the interplay between 3D hemodynamics and the biochemical reactions involved in thrombosis initiation in patient-specific models under transient flow. The salient features of the framework are: i) nonlinear rheological models of blood flow\; ii) a stabilized numerical framework for scalar mass transport\; and iii) a computational interface for nonlinear scalar models of protein dynamics that can be easily customized to include an arbitrary number of species and protein interactions.\n\n \n\nWe implemented and verified nonlinear rheological models of viscosity into CRIMSON and investigated the effects of non-Newtonian viscosity on both hemodynamic and transport metrics in an arterial and venous patient-specific model. Results demonstrated the importance of considering accurate rheological models.\n\n \n\nA stabilized finite element (FE) framework was developed to solve scalar mass transport problems in CRIMSON. Simulation of cardiovascular scalar mass transport problems offers significant numerical challenges such as highly advective flows and flow reversal at outlet boundaries. Furthermore\, little attention has been given to the identification of appropriate outflow boundary conditions that preserve the accuracy of the solution. These issues were resolved by developing a stabilized FE framework that incorporates backflow stabilization for Neumann outlet boundaries\; a consistent flux boundary condition that minimally disturbs the local physics of the problem\; and front-capturing stabilization to regularize solutions in high Pe number flows. The efficacy of these formulations was investigated for both idealized and patient-specific geometries.\n\n \n\nNext\, a flexible arbitrary reaction-advection-diffusion (ARAD) interface was implemented that enables prototyping nonlinear biochemical models of thrombin generation. After verifying the ARAD interface\, the performance was compared against the original hardcoded FORTRAN implementation for speed and accuracy using a 4-scalar nonlinear reaction model of thrombosis. Three different biochemical models of thrombin generation were investigated in idealized geometries. Finally\, we implemented the 18 scalar model in both idealized and patient-specific geometries to determine the effects of complex 3D hemodynamics on thrombin generation.\n\n \n\nThe computational framework for thrombosis initiation presented in this work has three key features: i) non-Newtonian hemodynamics\; ii) a stabilized numerical framework for scalar RAD problems\; and iii) a method to rapidly prototype custom reaction models using Python with negligible associated computational expense.\n\nChair: Prof. Alberto C. Figueroa

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Collection Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:EXTRAORDINARY ARTISTS\, STARTLING WORKS OF ART\, PUT IN DIALOG FOR YOU TO DISCOVER \n \nCollection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade. It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American\, European\, African\, and Asian art from across media\, sampling the Museum's remarkable\, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists\, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston\, Christo\, Theaster Gates\, Jenny Holzer\, Roni Horn\, Do-Ho Suh\, Kara Walker\, and others\, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed\, but instead as an active\, creative\, sometimes startling source of material and ideas\, open for debate and interpretation.\n \nRead the exhibition press release here.\n \nJOIN US FOR THE GRAND OPENING AT UMMA AFTER HOURS Tuesday\, April 2 7–10 p.m.\n \nGallery talks\, live music\, and more! This is a free event\, and all are welcome.\n\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Ann Arbor Jewish Book Festival: Sarah Stein
DESCRIPTION:Join author Sarah Stein as she presents her book \"Family Papers: A Sephardic Journey Through the Twentieth Century\"\n\nFor centuries\, the bustling port city of Salonica was home to the sprawling Levy family. As leading publishers and editors\, they helped chronicle modernity as it was experienced by Sephardic Jews across the Ottoman Empire. The wars of the twentieth century\, however\, redrew the borders around them\, in the process transforming the Levys from Ottomans to Greeks. Family members soon moved across boundaries and hemispheres\, stretching the familial diaspora from Greece to Western Europe\, Israel\, Brazil\, and India. In time\, the Holocaust nearly eviscerated the clan\, eradicating whole branches of the family tree.\n\nNamed one of the best books of 2019 by The Economist and a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice. A National Jewish Book Award finalist.\n\nSarah Abrevaya Stein is the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Director of the Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies\, and holds the Viterbi Family Chair in Mediterranean Jewish Studies at UCLA. She is the author or editor of many books\, including \"Extraterritorial Dreams: European Citizenship\, Sephardi Jews\, and the Ottoman Twentieth Century\" and \"Plumes: Ostrich Feathers\, Jews\, and a Lost World of Global Commerce.\" The recipient of the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature\, three National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships\, a Guggenheim Fellowship\, and two National Jewish Book Awards\, Stein lives with her family in Santa Monica\, CA.\n\nMore Information: https://book.jccannarbor.org/schedule/family-papers-a-sephardic-journey-through-the-twentieth-century/\nRegister Online: https://operations.daxko.com/Online/4088/ProgramsV2/OfferingDetails.mvc?program_id=TMP29837&offering_id=SES698917&location_id=B368
