DESCRIPTION:In *Watch Me Work — Portraits of Self*\, Detroit artist Sydney G. James brings to the forefront and celebrates the work of Black women. The USPS worker\, the artist\, the event-planning Zoom mom—the paintings in this exhibition reposition the narrative of black women’s visibility and value. Each portrait honors the individual and collective contributions and labors of Black women\, persistent through the pandemics\, through police violence\, and whether seen or unseen.\n\nWith the Gallery closed to the public due to COVID\, *Watch Me Work* will be completely visible from the street. Artwork will be hung in the Washington and Thayer-street first floor windows of the Institute for the Humanities\, with two additional pieces visible through the gallery window on Thayer in a public celebration of these meaningful human relationships and connections.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:View the online gallery at https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/humanitiesgalleries/sarah-rose-sharp/\n\nResults or Roses: New and Assorted Works is a virtual exhibition by artist and writer Sarah Rose Sharp and part of the Institute for the Humanities' Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded \"High Stakes Art\" initiative. The exhibition of new and collected fiber-based art incorporates salvaged and found bits of cultural and fiber art that\, as she explains\, \"forms a discourse that is physical rather than textual.\"\n\nThanks to the grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\, we supported Sharp's work on Results and Roses during the summer of 2020\, but due to COVID-19 were forced to postpone the pop-up exhibition also scheduled for summer 2020. This fall we installed Results and Roses as a pop-up exhibition in the Osterman Common Room. Due to building security\, it's not open to the general public\, but we are thrilled to present the work online as a virtual exhibition. \n\nAbout the Artist\nSarah Rose Sharp is a Detroit-based writer\, activist\, photographer\, and multimedia artist. She writes about art and culture for Art in America\, Hyperallergic\, Flash Art\, Sculpture Magazine\, ArtSlant\, and others. Sarah was named a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow for Art Criticism and is a 2018 recipient of the Rabkin Foundation Prize. She is a guest lecturer at several universities in Southeast Michigan and served as a mentor in the NYFA Immigrant Artist Mentorship Program in 2018. Sarah has served as guest curator and juror for institutions including Penn State University (State College\, PA)\, Scarab Club (Detroit\, MI)\, The Terhune Gallery (Toledo\, OH)\, and The Ann Arbor Art Center (Ann Arbor\, MI). Sarah has shown her own work in New York\, Seattle\, Columbus & Toledo\, OH\, Covington\, KY\, and Detroit—including at the Detroit Institute of Arts—with solo shows at Simone De Sousa Gallery and Public Pool. She is primarily concerned with artist and viewer experiences of making and engaging with art\, and conducts ongoing research into the state of contemporary art in redeveloping cities\, with special focus and regard for Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:University of Michigan students tell us that making friends and finding community are some of the most rewarding aspects of their time on campus but COVID-19 has made these things more challenging to do. You are invited to join the Community Matters Cohort Program which provides a space for students to meet others and participate in regular social events. Program participants will be matched with a small group of other students who are interested in finding community. DESCRIPTION:The season of giving has once again arrived in Michigan. But this one comes amid a surging pandemic\, an economic downturn\, and a looming deadline for continuation of federal financial relief.\n\nAll of these have created intense need in communities surrounding Michigan Medicine. In response\, the University of Michigan’s academic medical center will launch a third effort to encourage its own team\, and the local community\, to give food and funds to support Food Gatherers.\n\nStarting December 14\, and continuing through the 22nd\, this will include a convenient drive-up drop-off location for food and toiletries\, open to U-M faculty\, staff and students\, and members of the community in a position to give. It's located at Dock 90 of the North Campus Research Complex\, just off Huron Parkway.\n\nDonors may give online via credit card\, or get information about giving by mail or phone\, at http://www.foodgatherers.org/UM.\n\nAlready this year\, donors to Michigan Medicine’s previous two drives have contributed the equivalent of 128\,000 meals for Food Gatherers to distribute to more than 170 agencies that serve people throughout Washtenaw County and beyond. Generous individuals have also given thousands of pounds of personal care items\, from diapers to toothbrushes.\n\nThe donation drive started in March\, as part of Michigan Medicine’s effort to gather much-needed personal protective equipment during the early days of the pandemic when normal supply chains were disrupted.\n\nSince that time\, Food Gatherers’ partners have experienced a consistent surge in demand from people affected by the economic effects of the pandemic. Uncertainty over the future of federal and state relief efforts is making planning difficult.

DESCRIPTION:Physics searches and measurements at high-energy collider experiments traditionally focus on the high-pT region. However\, if particles are light and weakly-coupled\, this focus may be completely misguided: light particles are typically highly collimated around the beam line\, allowing sensitive searches with small detectors\, and even extremely weakly-coupled particles may be produced in large numbers there. The recently approved FASER experiment will use the opportunity and extend the LHC's physic potential by searching for long-lived particles and studying neutrino interactions at TeV energies. In this talk\, I will present the physics potential of FASER for new physics searches\, neutrino physics\, QCD as well as cosmic ray and cosmic neutrino measurement\, aiming to stimulate a fruitful discussion with my audience.

By year’s end\, all of us are now on a similar journey to take stock of what we have learned through these challenges.\n\nThis webinar brings together the perspectives of five funders working across North America that sponsor collaborative research on environmental topics. Earlier this fall\, each of them polled their grantees about how COVID-19 has affected their active projects and asked them to make sense of the benefits and constraints of doing collaborative research virtually. In this webinar\, panelists representing the organizations involved in the study will share and discuss preliminary findings and their implications for future programs.
