In German with English subtitles (92 min.\, 2012).\n\nThrough its engagement with blindness as both a trope and a physical reality\, Sheri Hagen’s *At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)* raises provocative questions regarding color blindness\, race and racism\, and in/visibility in contemporary German society. By challenging the normative category of whiteness\, as well as able-bodiedness and heterosexuality\, the film also explores alternative modes of seeing through the visual medium of cinema.\n   \nSheri Hagen is a Nigerian-German director\, screenwriter\, actress\, and founder of the production company Equality Film GmbH. Born in Lagos\, she grew up in Hamburg and has lived and worked in Berlin since the 1990s. After training as a stage actress\, Hagen then appeared in numerous film productions and television series\, before returning to theater in 2010. Across her career\, Hagen has worked on film projects as author\, director\, and producer. *Auf den zweiten Blick (At Second Glance)* is her debut film as a director. DESCRIPTION:UM Epidemiologist Emily Toth Martin and UM Infectious Disease Physician Lona Mody will explore the latest updates in Covid-19 on campus\, in Ann Arbor and across the state\; treatment successes and challenges\; and vaccine outlook.\n\nDr. Emily Toth Martin\, PhD\, MPH\, is on the faculty of Epidemiology at the UM School of Public Health. Her research focuses on building a greater understanding of the epidemiology of viral respiratory diseases (including RSV\, bocavirus and influenza) through the use of molecular epidemiology. In particular\, her work aims to identify strategies to reduce infections\, particularly in individuals with chronic comorbidities and in hospital infectious environments (including MRSA/VRE coinfection).\n\nLona Mody\, MD\, is one of very few internists in this country with an expertise in aging populations\, epidemiology\, an active research laboratory in microbiology and a translational research agenda focused on vulnerable aging population. Her NIH and AHRQ funded work has created a thriving consortium of post-acute and long-term care facilities in SE Michigan interested in developing interventions to enhance infection prevention in a traditionally resource poor setting.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium:  Investigating functions of human disease genes using C. elegans
DESCRIPTION:Two major challenges facing the genetics of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are: 1) the large and growing number of candidate risk genes with poorly characterized biological functions and 2) determining whether phenotypic disruptions in these new risk genes are reversible after development. Here\, we developed a pipeline to discover functions of ASD-associated genes by inactivating each gene in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans and observing the phenotypic consequences using machine vision. We quantified 26 phenotypes spanning morphology\, locomotion\, tactile sensitivity\, and learning in >27\,000 animals representing 135 genotypes\, allowing us to identify disruptions in habituation (a neural circuits plastic ability to decrease responding to repeated sensory stimuli) as a shared impairment. Next\, we used CRISPR-Cas9 auxin inducible degradation to determine that habituation impairments caused by developmental loss of the sole C. elegans ortholog of vertebrate neuroligins can be reversed by adult-specific re-expression. We are now using this phenotypic database to rapidly test whether phenotypic disruptions in several other ASD-associated genes are reversible in adulthood. This work charts the phenotypic landscape of ASD-associated genes and will prioritize reversible candidates for further study and therapeutic development.

DESCRIPTION:While Gong Zizhen (1792-1841) has been acclaimed as a patriotic poet and a prophet of revolutions and modernity in China\, his Buddhist thoughts and practices have often been either overlooked or misunderstood. Why did Gong profess his devotion to Tiantai Buddhism in particular\, and yet why did he choose to criticize the Lotus Sutra\, the most sacred scripture for Tiantai? This research investigates Gong's unique Buddhism in relation to modern religiosity and modern Buddhist Studies.\n   \n   Dr. Lang Chen is a research fellow at the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. Before joining the University of Michigan\, she was an assistant professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She received her PhD in religious studies at Yale University and worked as a postdoctoral fellow for the Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore. An undercurrent of movement explored in multiple variations thread the works together\, realized through a variety of methods including painterly gesture\, repetitive mark-making\, performance with an audience or without\, spoken word\, ambient sound\, and reimagined instruments. The exhibition aspires to pull at the loosened threads of a social fabric in crisis\, revealing larger complex histories and art discourses\, nationally and internationally\, framed through the experiences and trajectories of Stamps alumni during their time in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. DESCRIPTION:Spend the afternoon learning about artistic social activism and commitment.  Husband and wife artists Nick and Yen Azarro will discuss combining their artistic talents and commercial successes with mentoring and engaging Ypsilanti Community High School students in YFi or Ypsilanti Fidelity\, the student performance art movement that they founded.\nNick Azzaro is a photographer and multimedia artist\, starting his career in commercial film photography.  His current work focuses on the current state of race relations in our country through site specific work and printed comic narratives.\n\nYen Azzaro is an illustrator\, artist\, events producer and graphic recorder\, practicing the capture of real time spoken content drawn on large paper.  Yen recently completed a painted road piece ‘Zip “Code” ‘ in the Kerrytown area highlighting the economic\, social and racial identities and disparities that exist in Washtenaw County.\nYFi\, students create performance art moments in public spaces such as Eastern Michigan University Student Center\, Ann Arbor Summer Festival\, and Ypsilanti District Library. This wine shop has one of the most extensive wine selections in the area\, with 5000 carefully selected wines\, 600 spirits\, 150 beers\, 350 cigars and much more.\n\nDick Scheer has been the celebrated owner and President of Village Corner\, Inc. for 50 years\, and has been referred to as one of the most knowledgeable wine experts in the state.  In conversation with Bev Geltner\, we’ll learn about Dick’s interest in and expert knowledge of wines\, and his decades-long history at the Village Corner.  We’ll learn a lot about different wines\, and perhaps a few ghost stories as well.\n\nDick Scheer started in the wine business in 1964\, and has been a Wine Educator to thousands over the years.  He has taught wine appreciation seminars for the Ann Arbor Arts Center\, as well as programs sponsored by the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University.
