SUMMARY:Film Screening:CES Film. At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)
DESCRIPTION:Sheri Hagen\, director. In German with English subtitles (92 min.\, 2012).\n\nThrough its engagement with blindness as both a trope and a physical reality\, Sheri Hagen’s *At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)* raises provocative questions regarding color blindness\, race and racism\, and in/visibility in contemporary German society. After training as a stage actress\, Hagen then appeared in numerous film productions and television series\, before returning to theater in 2010. Across her career\, Hagen has worked on film projects as author\, director\, and producer. *Auf den zweiten Blick (At Second Glance)* is her debut film as a director. It won awards at the Filmfest Emden-Norderney (2012) and the Kirchen Filmfestival Recklinghausen (2013).\n\nThose who register for the Q&A with Sheri Hagen on 1/29/21 will receive a link and password to view the film *At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)* between January 18-29\, 2021. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Neutrino Oscillations: Where we are\, where we’re going
DESCRIPTION:In the last several decades\, neutrino oscillations have gone from an experimental anomaly to robust evidence for beyond-the-Standard-Model physics. While much has been learned since the first experiments\, several aspects of oscillations remain unknown\, including the degree to which CP is violated in the lepton sector. In this talk\, I will explore our current knowledge of neutrino oscillations\, and discuss how the next generation of experiments can further enlighten us. These upcoming experiments have the ability to test “standard” and BSM neutrino oscillation hypotheses\, as well as a multitude of non-neutrino BSM physics scenarios.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): The Misallocation of Women’s Talent Across Countries: Evidence from Personnel Data (Ashraf\, Bandiera\, Minni\, Quintas-Martinez)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWomen labor force participation varies widely: in Pakistan one worker in five is a woman\, in Sweden every other worker is. We study the effect of these differences on the misallocation of talent. To do so we first show that selection into the labor force is positive\, namely\, the hgiher the barrier the more able the women who work and then use personnel data of a global MNE to estimate a structural model of pay setting within the firm\, allowing the parameters to respond to local conditions. We show that the average ability of women in the workforce is higher than men’s and the ratio is largest where LFP is lower. We quantify the role of social norms and discuss policy alternatives\n\nFor information on how to watch this lecture and sign up for the SBEE mailing list to receive notice of upcoming events\, please visit the SBEE website: \nhttps://umbee.github.io/SBEE_Seminars

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Moiré Superlattices: A New Hubbard Model simulator?
DESCRIPTION:Department Colloquium Link: http://myumi.ch/GkgBm\n\nThe Hubbard model\, first formulated by physicist John Hubbard in the 1960s\, is a simple theoretical model of interacting quantum particles in a lattice. The model is thought to capture the essential physics of high-temperature superconductors\, magnetic insulators\, and other complex emergent quantum many-body ground states. Although the Hubbard model is greatly simplified as a representation of most real materials\, it has nevertheless proved difficult to solve accurately except in the one-dimensional case. Physical realization of the Hubbard model in two or three dimensions\, which can act as quantum simulators\, therefore have a vital role to play in solving the strong-correlation puzzle. In this talk\, I will discuss a potential experimental realization of the two-dimensional triangular lattice Hubbard model in angle-aligned heterobilayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides\, which form moiré superlattices because of the difference in lattice constant between the two semiconductors. \n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Webinar | Armenians and the End of Ottomans: Envisioning Peace in Occupied Istanbul (1918- 1923)
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for the webinar here:: http://myumi.ch/jxokV\n\nAfter registration\, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to join the webinar.\n \n The Armistice of Mudros\, signed in October 1918\, ended the Great War in the Middle East. While it was a signature of defeat for the Ottoman Empire\, it was the beginning of a new period for the Ottoman Armenians and other non-dominant groups such as Greeks and Jews. Yet\, the history of the Armistice period has been mostly absent in the existing academic literature. In this lecture\, Dr. Şekeryan will analyze the social and political developments regarding the Ottoman Armenian community in Istanbul by utilizing the Ottoman Turkish and Armenian press sources. The lecture will discuss the political transformation within the Armenian community during the Armistice years and then contextualize this transformation within the framework of ethnic bargaining theory to understand how the Ottoman Armenian community organized itself while facing political turmoil.\n \n Ari Şekeryan received his PhD from the University of Oxford in 2018. His thesis\, titled \"The Armenians in the Ottoman Empire after the First World War (1918-1923)\,\" bridges the disciplines of history\, international relations\, and area studies by analyzing the minority-majority relations in the final years of the Ottoman Empire\, primarily focusing on the relations between the Armenians and Turks. His research was grounded in detailed archival research conducted at the library of the Armenian Mekhitarist Congregation in Vienna\, Austria\; the Prime Minister’s Ottoman Archives in Istanbul\, Turkey\; and the National Library of Yerevan\, Armenia. He edited \"The Adana Massacre 1909: Three Reports and An Anthology of Armenian Literature 1913.\" His latest articles appeared in the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies\, Turkish Studies\, the Journal of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association\, and War in History. Dr. Şekeryan was a fellow at the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2019 and the Kazan Visiting Professor in Armenian Studies at California State University\, Fresno during Spring 2020.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us.
