SUMMARY:Film Screening:CES Film. At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)
DESCRIPTION:Sheri Hagen\, director. In German with English subtitles (92 min.\, 2012).\n\nThrough its engagement with blindness as both a trope and a physical reality\, Sheri Hagen’s *At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)* raises provocative questions regarding color blindness\, race and racism\, and in/visibility in contemporary German society. By challenging the normative category of whiteness\, as well as able-bodiedness and heterosexuality\, the film also explores alternative modes of seeing through the visual medium of cinema.\n \nSheri Hagen is a Nigerian-German director\, screenwriter\, actress\, and founder of the production company Equality Film GmbH. Born in Lagos\, she grew up in Hamburg and has lived and worked in Berlin since the 1990s. After training as a stage actress\, Hagen then appeared in numerous film productions and television series\, before returning to theater in 2010. Across her career\, Hagen has worked on film projects as author\, director\, and producer. *Auf den zweiten Blick (At Second Glance)* is her debut film as a director. It won awards at the Filmfest Emden-Norderney (2012) and the Kirchen Filmfestival Recklinghausen (2013).\n\nThose who register for the Q&A with Sheri Hagen on 1/29/21 will receive a link and password to view the film *At Second Glance (Auf den zweiten Blick)* between January 18-29\, 2021. Register for the discussion at https://myumi.ch/jxo3w.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Ying Cheng\, Professor of Psychology\, University of Notre Dame
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Quality control in assessment is of critical importance to ensure the reliability and validity of the scores produced by assessments\, and the replicability and reproducibility of research findings. In this talk I will cover various aspects of quality control in high-stakes and low-stakes assessment scenarios. One specific problem will be discussed in detail\, i.e.\, the detection of unintended intra-individual change during the assessment process\, such as test speededness and item pre-knowledge in the high-stakes context and respondent disengagement in the low-stakes context. By bringing the traditional statistical quality control methods including change point analysis and CUSUM control chart into the framework of item response theory (IRT) modeling\, new methods are developed to detect such response anomalies and protect validity of assessment scores.\n\nThis seminar will be livestreamed via Zoom https://umich.zoom.us/j/94350208889\nThere will be a virtual reception to follow

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Biophysics Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:The Biophysics Virtual Seminar Series presents:\n\nDr. Katrin Heinze - Rudolf Virchow Center for Integrative and\nTranslational Bioimaging\, Universität Würzburg\n\n*“Boosting high-resolution fluorescence by tunable nano-coatings\"*\n\nABSTRACT: The “Resolution Revolution\" in fluorescence microscopy over the last decades has given rise to a variety of techniques that allow imaging beyond the diffraction limit with resolution up to the nanometer range. One particularly powerful technique is direct stochastic optical\nreconstruction microscopy (dSTORM)\, a widely-used type of single molecule localization microscopy (SMLM)\, which is based on the temporal separation of the emission of individual fluorophores\nand subsequent localization analysis. This eventually allows to reconstruct a super-resolved image revealing details down to typically 20 nm in a cellular setting. The key point here is the achievable localization precision\, which mainly depends on the image contrast generated by the individual fluorophore’s emission. We found that reflective metal-dielectric nano-coatings represent a tunable nanomirror that can do both quenching and boosting fluorescence for high-contrast imaging on the nanoscale. Such mirror-enhanced fluorescence is very different from other surface effects based on total internal reflection microscopy or optoplasmonics. While surface-plasmon supported fluorescence methods provide much higher enhancement factors\, mirror-enhanced approaches are more versatile and thus highly suitable for modern bio-imaging. The resolution improvement achieved with such mirror-enhanced STORM (meSTORM) is both spectrally and spatially tunable and thus allows for dual-color approaches on the one hand\, and selectively highlighting region above the cover glass on the other hand. Even if the resulting resolution boost is based on a near-field effect and thus restricted to imaging near surfaces\, a large variety of membrane fluorescence approaches even beyond SMLM benefit. Thus\, live-cell\nFluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy and Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer are as well perfect candidates to be pushed to the next level.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Moments of Silence: the Unforgetting of the October 6\, 1976\, Massacre in Bangkok
DESCRIPTION:Event is free and open to the public\; please register at http://bit.ly/3oS7YLq\nFriday\, Jan 22\, 2021 at 12:00 PM EST\n\nThis talk will be a discussion of Professor Winichakul's latest book\, *Moments of Silence: the Unforgetting of the October 6\, 1976\, Massacre in Bangkok* (University of Hawai`i\, 2020).\n \nThe ‘October 6 massacre’ remains enigmatic to Thai society. The unforgetting—the inability to remember or forget\, or to articulate memories in a meaningful way—has been due to the state’s suppression\, shame and guilt\, historical ideology\, and the changing politics. This book is the story of the changing memories and the variable conditions for silence over the past forty years.\n \nThongchai Winichakul is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His book\, *Siam Mapped: a History of the Geo-body of a Nation* (1994)\, was awarded the Harry J Benda Prize from the Association for Asian Studies (AAS\, USA) and was translated into Japanese\, Korean\, Chinese\, and Thai. He was a recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Award in 1994. and was President of the Association for Asian Studies in 2013/14. He has also published eight books in Thai.\n \n \n \n----\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Interdisciplinary Seminar in Social Science Methodology (I3SM)
DESCRIPTION:Marty Davidson will be presenting his paper\, \"TPRS-Forest Estimation.\"\n\nAbstract\nThis paper proposes an estimation strategy – TPRS-Forest\, which researchers can use to model spatial data with poorly understood empirical properties. TPRS-Forest estimation uses the projected coordinates of a spatial variable and decomposes it into three components: spatial trend\, systematic variation along the spatial trend\, and random noise. The first stage uses thin-plate regression splines (TPRS) to approximate a non-stationary spatial trend\, or a change in the conditional mean across the region of observation. Because TPRS represents an approximation\, this stage does not model all spatial dependencies. To compensate\, the second stage performs a random forest regression on the TPRS residuals\, which accounts for systematic variation along the spatial trend. The final stage takes the filtered residuals from the second step and tests for any remaining spatial correlative structure\, using a global and local Moran test. This proposed method merges together two literatures of spatial modelling – geoadditive models (Kammann & Wand\, 2003\; Wood\, 2017) and spatial random forests (Georganos et al.\, 2019\; Hengl et al.\, 2004\, 2018) – and anchors them in a social scientific conceptual framework. In developing this method\, my primary goal is to provide a way for social scientists to descriptively model their data and produce a set of continuous predicted values while minimizing the assumptions on how best to model their data's spatial properties.\n\nThe primary function of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Social Science Methodology (I3SM) is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for students and faculty to present their current projects and to receive feedback on either the methodological component of their project or a methodology under development. Presenters can also present new research questions and ideas and receive ideas about which methodologies would work best to tackle such questions. We define methodology broadly as the approaches to which data is collected and/or organized to give empirical content to social science research. It includes both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.\n\nTo join the meeting via Zoom\, email skuzushi@umich.edu for the meeting link.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Tracking and Anticipating Lava Flow Emplacement
DESCRIPTION:Zoom ID#913 3248 2676\nLava flows rarely present a risk for populations\, but they are one of the most frequent volcanic hazards on a global scale and devastate absolutely everything on their path. Monitoring and anticipating the trajectory of lava flows is therefore the best approach to reduce losses and mitigate the risks associated with this phenomenon. Lava flow emplacement dynamics (speed\, rheological behavior\, morphology\, length) depend mainly on the topography\, the volumetric flow at the vent\, the volume emitted\, and the rheology of the lava itself. Lava rheology is directly linked to temperature\, chemical composition and to petrology (major element composition\, redox state\, volatile content\, and shape and size of bubbles and crystals). During flowing\, upon cooling the thermal gradient along and across the flow evolves continuously and triggers crystallization associated with evolution of the residual liquid chemical composition. This dynamic process has a direct influence on lava viscosity\, which lets the flow to stop when rheological parameters are such they impede further motion. We present here how lava viscosity is measured in the lab and in the field and how its evolution down flow may be modelled. To anticipate lava flow trajectory and maximum length\, we then set up a protocol that merges a stochastic approach to model the flood zone and a thermo-rheological model to calculate the distance reached as a function of the effusion rate. Using almost real-time satellite data\, we apply this protocol to monitor and anticipate the advance of lava flows at Piton de la Fournaise.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Financial Well-Being of Detroit Residents: What Do We Know?
DESCRIPTION:This community conversation hosted by United Way for Southeastern Michigan and University of Michigan's Poverty Solutions will explore the reasons why more than half of Detroiters are financially insecure or in financial trouble.\n\nThe virtual event will present key findings from a new report from Poverty Solutions\, The Financial Well-Being of Detroit Residents: What Do We Know?\n\nThe report demonstrates how a combination of low and volatile incomes and disproportionately high costs makes it challenging for tens of thousands of Detroiters to maintain consistently positive cash flow and build savings\, leading many households to accrue unmanageable debt and suffer low credit scores. \n\nThis event is the first in a series of community conversations around opportunities for action to address the underlying conditions that create financial instability and hardship for so many Detroiters. We are seeking to engage a broad range of stakeholders – frontline staff\, agency leaders\, academics\, financial institutions\, policymakers\, funders\, individuals with lived experience of financial hardship\, and general members of the community. Please join us.

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum: Counterintuitive effects of incentive and retention interval on working memory in young and older adults: A diffusion modeling perspective
DESCRIPTION:There has been a rapid increase in studies on the effects of incentive on cognition\, but still a great deal we don’t know. What aspects of cognitive processing are most affected by incentives? How do task parameters and individual or group differences influence whether incentives will be effective? The present study takes some steps towards answering those questions: We used diffusion modeling to identify which aspects of cognitive processing were affected by loss incentive in a working memory task with varying retention intervals in young and older adults. Our results confirm some previous findings suggesting opposite responses to loss by young and older adults\, help identify which aspects of processing are most affected in each group\, and reveal some surprising beneficial effects of longer retention intervals. The analysis reveals the value of assessing the effects of incentive and task structure on theoretically meaningful processing parameters in addition to the behavioral performance itself.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Extending Apologies: Memorializing the World War II Japanese American Incarceration at the Tanforan Assembly Center
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: “Extending Apologies”\, focuses on the future memorial for the Tanforan Assembly Center –a former Japanese American Incarceration Camp in San Francisco\, California– and the demand of victims and their families to extend the official apology\, the Civil Liberties Act of 1988\, beyond mere words. A series of on-site historic plaques and an exhibition of Dorothea Lange’s incarceration photographs at a nearby train station serve as background to study the development of the new memorial. The design and iconography of the future Tanforan memorial –a figurative bronze surrounded by a landscaped memorial plaza– are analyzed alongside the motivations of the main actors that have shaped it: a group of memory activists\, a transit agency\, and a shopping mall developer. “Extending Apologies” argues that these past and future commemorative interventions reveal the tensions between an unsettled memorial landscape and the Japanese American community’s ongoing demands for apology.\n\nBio: Valentina Rozas-Krause received her Ph.D. in Architecture (History\, Theory & Society) from the University of California\, Berkeley. She is an architect with a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Her field of study encompasses architecture\, urbanism\, and landscape from the nineteenth century to the present\, with particular research and teaching interests in memory\, postcolonialism\, preservation\, public space\, social justice\, and gender. Valentina has published two books. The first\, Ni Tan Elefante\, Ni Tan Blanco (Ril\, 2014)\, is an urban\, architectural\, and political history of the National Stadium in Chile. The second is the co-edited volume Disputar la Ciudad (Bifurcaciones\, 2018) which deals with spatial strategies of oppression\, resistance\, memory and reparation within varying urban contexts. These join peer-reviewed articles in History & Memory\, e-flux\, Latin American Perspectives\, Anos 90\, ARQ\, Revista 180\, Cuadernos de Antropología Social\, and Bifurcaciones alongside a chapter in the edited volume Neocolonialism and Built Heritage (Routledge\, 2020). Her research has been supported by numerous fellowships and grants\, including a Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship\, a Townsend Center for the Humanities Dissertation Fellowship\, a John L. Simpson Research Fellowship in International and Comparative Studies from UC Berkeley\, a DAAD Dissertation Research Grant\, and a Becas Chile Grant. Valentina is currently working on a book project titled Memorials and the Cult of Apology\, which examines how contemporary memorials aim to atone for past injustices. In effect\, apologies are being materialized into memorials\, a phenomenon of global importance\, which presents a major shift in national self-representation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Physics potential of high energy muon collider
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Link : http://myumi.ch/O4P7E\n\nMomentum has been accumulating to consider high energy muon collider as a future high energy collider possibility\, especially on the US soil. Muon collider has unique physics cases\, both as a Higgs factory as well as a high energy lepton collider. In this talk\, I will review the overall physics pictures for muon colliders and discuss these unique physics cases. In particular\, I will show a recent study where we rethink about WIMP DM and their testability at colliders. We show that through the new signature and channels proposed by us\, we can draw some conclusive statements about WIMP DM\, which can serve as a physics driver case for high energy muon colliders.
