Drawing upon the notion of stance, we unveil the affective trouble generated by this heterosexual union vis-\u00e0-vis the Israeli national project. More specifically, we tease out the kaleidoscopic collage of politicians\u2019 affective (dis)attachments in relation to Halevi, Aharish and a variety of socioculturally relevant categories such as the Israeli nation. This affective patchwork, we argue, is itself the product of a tension that is at the very heart of the Israeli nation-state, that between the policing of Jewishness as the defining principle of the Israeli national imagined community, on the one hand, and the upholding of the democratic imperative to equal treatment and recognition, on the other.\r\n\r\nRoey J. Gafter is a senior lecturer in the department of Hebrew Language at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He is a sociolinguist whose work focuses on the use of linguistic resources in the construction of ethnic identities. His research explores sociophonetic variation in Hebrew, the Israeli construction of ethnic identity from a discourse analytic perspective, and contact between Hebrew and Arabic. He has published, *inter alia*, in the *Journal of Sociolinguistics, Social Semiotics, and Linguistic Inquiry*.\r\n\r\nTommaso M. Milani is a critical discourse analyst who is interested in the ways in which power imbalances are (re)produced and\/or contested through semiotic means. His main research foci are: language ideologies, language policy and planning, linguistic landscape, as well as language, gender and sexuality. He has published extensively on these topics in international journals and edited volumes. Participants must be current U-M students and will be admitted, space pending, beginning January 11.\r\n \r\nIn October 2020, Ukraine\u2019s Constitutional Court ruled that the country\u2019s National Agency on Prevention of Corruption (NAPC) could no longer publish the electronic asset declarations of government officials. The court also struck down the imposing of criminal liability on government officials who provide false information on these asset declarations. The court\u2019s decision represents a significant setback for government transparency advocates. The ruling may also negatively impact Ukraine - EU relations.\r\n\r\nThis workshop will have students analyze the role that international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can play in raising awareness of, and advocating for, increased government transparency in Ukraine. During the workshop, students will consider the practical steps NGOs can take to obtain buy-in from both Ukraine-based civic organizations and EU policymakers to advance anti-corruption efforts.\r\n \r\nTinatin Tsertsvadze, a policy analyst at the Open Society European Policy Institute, will lead this workshop. She is an expert on human rights and rule of law policy in the European Union, Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Before joining the Open Society European Policy Institute, she worked at the Human Rights and Democracy Network and the Foundation for International Relations and Foreign Dialogue.\r\n\r\nParticipating students must agree to complete select readings and a brief writing assignment prior to the workshop session. In my presentation, I highlight this in two studies. The first study examines how constellations of cognitive skills (e.g., inhibition, planning, emotion regulation) are associated with key developmental domains, finding that unique cognitive profiles have functional significance for academics, mental health, and health behaviors in adolescence. The second study illustrates three different techniques for the analysis of intensive longitudinal data on verbal recall with the purpose of delineating links between daily cognitive and contextual processes. The results provide insight into how mean-based, within-person, and person-specific analyses handle intensive longitudinal data and how this leads to disparate inferences about daily processes. Brazil is also the country most affected by the recent Zika epidemic and is an epicenter of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. In this talk, I will introduce DeCodE, funded by NICHD, and the first panel survey on fertility and reproductive health in Brazil, tracking women\u2019s childbearing intentions, desires and outcomes during the Zika and Covid-19 public health emergencies. Combining analysis from in-depth interviews and baseline survey data collected in April-September 2020, this talk will uncover women\u2019s social and reproductive vulnerabilities during the pandemic. Results show that inequities are exacerbated and that women socially exposed to Zika during the epidemic intend to postpone and forego childbearing. Overall findings suggest that there are clear spillover effects across successive novel infectious disease emergencies that are relevant in every country Zika and Covid-19 have touched. \r\n\r\nBio: Let\u00edcia Marteleto is a social scientist with expertise in social demography, social stratification and reproductive health. Marteleto\u2019s scholarship examines inequalities in fertility, reproductive processes and educational attainment, among others. Marteleto\u2019s research has been funded by several foundations. From law enforcement, to border control, to employment, healthcare diagnostics, and assigning trust scores, computer vision systems are being rapidly integrated into all aspects of society. In research, there are works that purport to determine a person\u2019s sexuality from their social network profile images, others that claim to classify \u201cviolent individuals\u201d from drone footage. These works were published in high impact journals, and some were presented at workshops in top tier computer vision conferences such as CVPR.\r\n\r\nA critical public discourse surrounding the use of computer-vision based technologies has also been mounting. For example, the use of facial recognition technologies by policing agencies has been heavily critiqued and, in response, companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM have pulled or paused their facial recognition software services. Gender Shades showed that commercial gender classification systems have high disparities in error rates by skin-type and gender, and other works discuss the harms caused by the mere existence of automatic gender recognition systems. Recent papers have also exposed shockingly racist and sexist labels in popular computer vision datasets\u2013resulting in the removal of some. In this talk, I will highlight some of these issues and proposed solutions to mitigate bias, as well as how some of the proposed fixes could exacerbate the problem rather than mitigate it.\r\n\r\nBio:\r\n\r\nTimnit Gebru is a senior research scientist at Google co-leading the Ethical Artificial Intelligence research team. Her work focuses on mitigating the potential negative impacts of machine learning based systems. Timnit is also the co-founder of Black in AI, a non profit supporting Black researchers and practitioners in artificial intelligence. Prior to this, she did a postdoc at Microsoft Research, New York City in the FATE (Fairness Transparency Accountability and Ethics in AI) group, where she studied algorithmic bias and the ethical implications underlying any data mining project. She received her Ph.D. from the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, studying computer vision under Fei-Fei Li. In particular, I will discuss a new technique for pre-processing \u03c00 momenta through combinatoric di-photon pairing in advance of applying jet algorithms which significantly reduces \u03c00 photon splitting across jets in multi-jet events and lead to an improvement of the correct photon-to-jet assignment efficiency by a factor of about 3 when the EM resolution is improved from 15 to 3%\/\u221aE. \r\n\r\nI will then present the design and optimization of a highly segmented crystal detector concept that achieves the required energy resolution of 3%\/\u221aE, and a time resolution better than 30 ps providing exceptional particle identification capabilities and discuss how the implementation of dual-readout on crystals permits to achieve a resolution better than 30%\/\u221aE for neutral hadrons.
